The Community Round Up

With less than a fortnight to go before the big kick-off, Fantasy managers and our community writers and posters are continuing their mission in search of quality budget options and prosperous heavy-hitters, whilst sifting the crop of new top-flight talent.

We look back to soak up the highlights of the week’s community submissions and drop in on the key Hot Topics to contemplate Southampton’s exodus, the potential starting XIs and the case to select a certain Manchester City full-back.

The Community Articles

The community section is simmering nicely as we near that August 16 deadline, with rotations and predicted teamsheets earning some keen interest over the past week.

ForzaInter was the latest community writer to tackle the issue of defensive rotation, putting forward a compelling new angle. His strategy is to focus on heavy-hitting, premium defenders from top sides and supplement them with a cheap defensive pair that can drop in when tricky fixtures rear their heads.

Defence was also the focus of Bowstring The Trout’s budget balancing article in which he lays out some furtehr cheap rotation options, in addition to a handful of mid-priced stoppers.

Meanwhile, The Puntmaster returned with another of his excellent player analysis updates focusing on the new arrivals to the Premier League. This time around he presented a useful summary of the key acquisitions to this point, including links to his new player spreadsheets, which will be particularly helpful to those catching up on his series of must-read updates.

Saniul, is another community writer who has been compiling a series of illuminating spreadsheet analysi. He’s focused his attentions on the potential starting XIs, based on the latest injury, transfer and friendly fixture news and events.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some pre-season analysis or lengthy opinions and foresight to share, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

While I was away on my family holidays this week, Fantasy Football Scout’s moderators and contributors kindly stepped up to take over our daily Hot Topics, covering a range of issues from differentials, to the continuing quest for individuality as we seek to avoid the template team.

Mark posed a pair of differing posers during the week, firstly asking how many new players to the Premier League we will be considering and just how far we should go with our punts on the likes of Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and Chelsea’s Diego Costa?

Meanwhile, Mark also chirped up to ask whether Fantasy managers are being duped into a defensive template by the recent transfers involving the likes of Ben Davies, Dejan Lovren and Andre Wisdom.

Manchester City was a focus for moderators Spencer and Applebonkers’s Hot Topic contributions. Spencer pondered just how much the World Cup will affect the pitch time of those players involved in the latter stages of the tournament, with Sergio Aguero a particular concern.

Ironically, one of those players who could well benefit from late returning World Cup players is the much-maligned Aleks Kolorov. Applebonkers asked whether the defender, who is often referred to as ‘Lolorov’ due to his bandwagaon cameos and frustrating knack of letting us down, could be in for a sensational early start to the campaign. Applebonkers certainly volunteered some compelling statistics to back up investment in the Serbian. Personally, I think this is a blatant attempt to lure Mark into the Kolarov honey trap from the get-go.

Elsewhere, the community’s most experienced Fantasy managers such as Triggerlips and Rasping Drive, were quick to respond to moderator Athletico Timbo’s excellent Hot topic asking for the top tips for success. Efficient short-term planning and watching as many games as possible, were among Rasping Drive’s nuggets of advice. Meanwhile, in a separate Hot Topic, Triggerlips wondered, with so many unknowns in the game, whether Fantasy managers would be better off carrying out minimal planning and seeing how the early season unfolds.

Another experienced campaigner, Torres Magic, also helped out with our daily Hot Topics. His focus was on differential players and proved one of our most discussed posts of the week. Inspired by this thread, Squeaky Bum Time decided to look specifically at some of the best mid-priced differentials available in the Fantasy Premier League game.

While holidaying in Hampshire, the local news inspired my first Hot topic on my return, as I pondered the fate awaiting Southampton following the exodus of their crown jewels in July. Some of the responses demonstrated faith in their remaining players to step up and replace the likes of Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw. Among those who could be destined for a great season is young full-back Matt Targett. Be sure to check on Lucy’s thorough analysis of his prospects here.

While investing in Targett and other Southampton players could be a risk, there was a cast of more reliable sources discussed this week.

Arsenal’s rejuvenated midfielder, Aaron Ramsey, stands out in particular according to the aptly named Aaron Ramessi, who predicts another stellar season for the clinical Welsh playmaker. Elsewhere, Beavis nominated Romelu Lukaku as an asset who could offer us a decent level of assurance, while Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas is said to be another dependable points scorer, particularly before January, if Dandec’s analysis rings true.

Finally, Innsie was on hand to provide this excellent summary of all the key questions during the week, including the demise of Southampton’s squad and the conundrum surrounding Chelsea’s tempting defensive assets.

The Community Tournaments

Torres Magic’s Last Man Standing is returning for the 2014/14 Fantasy Premier League season. The code to join is 52587-7172.

Xward has also set up an open FPL league, called “Naughty Filthy Punters” (3079-201991), while Narenda Wicaksono has a league (67393-21769) and a cup (67393-21807) in FPL that is open to the community.

Elsewhere, Zep has set up a dead team challenge, where teams stick with the same squad selection until the end of the season. Full details can be found here.

Who in the DZ is braving UFPL? I'm tempted to give it a crack purely because it's a bit different and you don't stress over weekly trades like in FPL so could be different.

my concern is that I would be torn between two games and my mind would be scattered and possibly hoping for different outcomes.

in AFL we have AFL fantasy and supercoach and they are different and it takes alot of energy to keep up

I have similar concerns. It was all good playing UFPL last season as it was only 15 weeks and just a bit of a trial run to see what it was like, so not that much of a big deal.

I'm also concerned about how it will affect my transfer decisions. Will I start to play the teams off against each other and maybe I'd be reluctant to get a player in my FPL team if I already had him in my UFPL team, it'd be boring to get the same player again wouldn't it? I'm just cautious about how it will affect my decision making long term.

I'm exactly the same... I take FPL pretty seriously as I play in some cash leagues and leagues were alot of pride and bragging rights are on the line so I might just do UFPL as a fun sort of thing... i say that now haha

The thing is the stakes are much higher in UFPL, less people playing, loads of cash up for grabs, and at a cost of 5 quid. I'd have me confused as to which one to focus on.

I guess if you are already playing FPL for cash it'd be easier though, I'm not in any cash games myself.

Must have players for you so far? For me:

    Chelsea defender
    Mata
    Rooney
    Sigurdsson (great price)
    Ramsey

All proven they can play good football in the premier league. Low risk, high reward. Eriksen, Toure and Sturridge are also decent picks IMO. Eriksen was fantastic for Spurs, while Toure and Sturridge got 20 goals each with countless assists.

The Young wagon is feasible but if you look beyond his current form its obvious that its a bandwagon best avoided.

He won't be getting anywhere on the double Chelsea defence though, terrible idea considering the rotation ahead.

But doubling protects you against rotation. Seeing as it's four from five you're guaranteed to have one, if not both, playing in every boringly predictable Chelsea clean sheet performance.

It doubles your chances of getting the wrong one though. Its not much use spending 13m on just one Chelsea defender (if the other is benched).

Im not sure i agree with that. I think Morinho lokes to stick with a settled central defence, it could well be the fulll backs that are rotated. Im sure one or the other will miss the occasional game , but dont think it will be the musical chairs some of you are predicting

You are gambling on getting both right though Trigger, its much harder to get 2 Chelsea defenders right than it is to get 1 right. You must agree there.

Here's the big issue, we have 5 midfield spots, according to 'template' 2 will probably be filled with Siggy and a 4.5 (unless we have decided to go with an uber defence or a very weak front 3)...
the way I see it... there are 7 sets of players to pick from:

    1. Ramsey/Sanchez
    2. Hazard/Fab
    3. Sterling/Gerrard (still a very viable fantasy option... has flow under the radar early on last 2 seasons)
    4. Mata
    5. Eriksen/Lamela (if you're game)
    6. Nasri/Yaya/Silva

    In the lower echelons
    7. Tadic/De Jong/Mirallas etc.

Some variation of all of these is possible but how is one supposed to decide? As it stands I have Sterling, Mata and Nasri but this seems weak ... I change it Nasri to Ramsey and I say... hmmm, now I want Fabregas. then I say why not Hazard? then the thought enters my mind that Matic might even be viable when I realise I have lost the plot..

Is it just me or does everyone's fantasy mind go something like that ?

Looks solid enough. I don't fancy the keepers much, both teams have been poor in pre season.

Albrighton and Bojan might be a bit light

I'd drop one of your expensive defenders, probably Vert as he might be getting sold to Barcelona.

The best argument for double Chelsea defence is this:

Last season they got clean sheets away at Man City, Man United, Arsenal and Liverpool.

Pick two and play them every week.

Its all good if you are 100% convinced both players are nailed on. However with 5 first team players competing for 4 spots no one can be 100% convinced two particular players will start every game.

I'd want my premium defenders to play every game. There is a risk that one of the two might end up they guy who spends most of the time on the bench, we just don't know and thats the troubling thing.

they also conceded against struggling sides, and didn't achieve shut out where you expect them to. that's the main issue for me. I'll play chelsea defenders against Sunderland but bench them against City and the opposite result might happen. I've never doubled up for that reason.

You shouldn't be benching Chelsea defenders at this point in the season. There's not enough cash in our teams at this point to have a team where that's a viable option.

Play them every week. Over the course of the season they'll get more clean sheets than any clever rotation strategy, and that frees up transfers to be used elsewhere.

12.5m big investment on two defenders where the full backs rarely get attacking points. One Chelsea defender is crucial, but two will cost you another big club attacker

Mourinho is usually cautious at the start of the season against big teams. So good chance of CS in the tough fixtures that Chelsea have got.

But two 6m+ defenders at the start of the season cripples your team elsewhere I feel. Better to go for that ploy in the second half of the season when Chelsea have decent fixtures and you built up some TV.

    Foster
    Caulker; Cahill; Cameron
    Schurrie; Young; Mata; Ramsey
    Dzeko; Rooney; Costa
Subs: Krul; Siggy; Wisdom: N Taylor

    Is the subs bench right.

Purely financial. Highly owned and very unlikely to score well so will drop in value quite quickly over the first few weeks. Marney shouldn't.

I heard a thought of putting our Hall Of Fame ranks next to our names. Triggerlips constant misleading posts and other top finishers occasional trolling of new or Gravless RMTs is a big part of the argument against this. The best advice doesn't always come from those who finish with the best overall ranks, not by a long shot.
