The Rate My Team Discussion

With so many of you seeking advice on their teams before August 16, we thought it would prudent to run a daily community article to provide a dedicated focus for “Rate My Team” (RMT) requests.

Each day ahead of the new season, we’ll select one of the Fantasy Football Scout team and post up their own RMT request to open up discussion and encourage others to post their own. We’ll turn the comments over to you to provide a useful place for those seeking advice and highlight some of the key decisions under deliberation.

Please nudge those posting RMTs in other articles to visit this daily RMT article. Also, when posting requests, please remember to be courteous to those who take the time to help out. Equally, if you’re an experienced Fantasy manager with some views on initial line-ups, take time out to dip in and contribute – the Fantasy Football Scout team will be doing their upmost to offer their feedback as the discussion develops throughout the day.

Next up is Demi who is looking for feedback on this team:

De Gea/Hamer

Mariappa, Wisdom, Davies, Debuchy, Terry

Mata, Sigurdsson, Eriksen, Hazard, Albrighton

Diego Costa, Rooney, Diouf

Demi says he is pretty set on having David De Gea and a non-playing keeper, and it’s one of the few positions that have remained constant in all his drafts. Juan Mata, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Christian Eriksen and Eden Hazard have all featured strongly in most of his thoughts too, but, apparently, he could be persuaded to start the season with Cesc Fabregas and use the extra cash to upgrade his defence. Speaking of which, John Terry is the one certainty in Demi’s rearguard: the others are more doubtful. Demi is currently undecided as to whether to keep an Arsenal defender in his side, with Debuchy his current preferred selection.

Up front, Wayne Rooney is locked in, but Demi has been really struggling for inspiration on the other two forward spots. Diego Costa seems as good as any option for the first three or four games; he’s not keen on Olivier Giroud or Edin Dzeko with their respective fixtures. Would he be better off downgrading Costa and instead focusing on solidifying his defence?

Feel free to get stuck in with your feedback. We look forward to scanning your RMTs throughout the day on this article.

    Help please

    Current team...

    De Gea Elliot
    Baines Trippier Clyne 4.0m 4.0m
    Sanchez Hazard Mata Siggy Hoilett
    Rooney Dzeko Bojan

Thinking of upgrading Bojan to Austin with the 0.5 in the bank but don't want to double up on QPR.

Any suggestions or general comments about the team would be appreciated.

Personally, I think Trippier, as good as he is, is an expensive commodity. Your relying on a defender from a newly promoted team to get attacking returns, which can occur at any point, whereas clean sheets are the true bread a butter. When would you seek to bench him?

Baines early season fixtures are horrible, so you may be disappointed with his returns.

Wait and see the final Southampton pre-season fixture. Traditionally taken very seriously, and should see that team start the season. If Yoshida or someone else fills in at centre halve, I'd take them over the 5.0 Clyne.

I like the mids and forwards, some punts with some big hitters. Watch out for Hazard, he had an extended break for the world cup, so no one is really sure when he will be match fit (although he probably will be)

Just a quick one here, I'm well aware that points come from the midfield and forwards, and clean sheets are a nice bonus, but have a left myself a bit too light at the back?

    Mannonne, Krul,

Huth, Moore, Chester, Davies, Phil Jones,

    Sanchez, Siggy, Mata, Lamela, Albrighton,

    Costa, Rooney, Jovetic.

I like it, I think your defence is just about strong enough in terms of value. The only thing I'd suggest is rejigging the investment so you have 2 x £4m subs and a slightly stronger first team defender. So perhaps downgrade Chester to Wisdom and upgrade Huth or Davies.

I could downgrade to Wisdom or another (that Swansea bloke has been floating his name around), who would you recommend upgrading Davies or Huth to? Could jump onto Shawcross for the clean sheets, guaranteed playing time, or Davies to someone else?

Yeah N Taylor is another option for the downgrade. Huth was out injured for a lot of last season so I'd be hesitant with starting him in week 1. At £5.5 there's Debuchy which I think is a good option as long as you're confident he will start. You could also downgrade Davies as well to a £4.5 and get a £6m defender like Mert or Azpi to go alonside Jones and rotate the 3rd defender depending on the fixture. I like Davies but there's a bit of uncertainty given that he's a new signing.

There are a lot of options round Davies, so if he doesn't start I can easily switch. I don't like bringing in expensive defenders straight away unless their fixtures end up being gorgeous (I brought in Mertesacker right at the start of his run). I'd say Huth was a sure fire to start, but the Scout doesn't fill us with the full team selection, so I'll have to do some research.

If he's fit then he'll start for sure but he's been out for about 9 months. I know what you mean about expensive defenders but I prefer to have a couple that I know can confidently start in almost any fixture - I've gone with Cahill & Jones and the rest will rotate. It might be a bit different this season with the new points system though.

How often will you play your 5th mid? There are a couple of other options out there, otherwise Wanyama may be good only for 1 point yellow cards.

Keep an eye on Wisdom, just in case. Other then that I like it.

Money in defence means I won't have to make any changes there for a while.

Any reason to choose Henderson? I know he will improve his goals over the year, but the starting few weeks are not great and there are other options at that price range.

Whilst Arsenal are good defensively, I'm not convinced to get them until their fixtures ease up, they face a fair few strong sides early on.

Mourinho mentioned in his comments that certain players would need a rest and then to begin training again. I'm reading this as Salah getting a start against Palace instead of Willian/Oscar/Schurrle, since its a fairly easy game to start with.

City cover is always good, and both Dzeko and Jovetic will start the first game thanks to the other two's injuries. Long term prospects dependant on their form. A Tottenham forward could be useful dependant on who gets the spot.

There are a lot of options for that 2nd forward spot of yours, so my only concern would be finding a replacement for Young if/when he loses his spot to either Rafael or Valencia.

    Luis Evans Chester
    Sanchez Hazard(vc) Eriksen Siggurdson
    Rooney(c) Dzeko Lukaku

    Bench: Gilks,El Ahmadi,Wisdom,Moore.

    Key points:
1.Going for Lukaku despite tough fixtures as there'nt too many reliable options below options...also,Everton have City and Chelsea to play at home which means they should be able to score.Bony is another option but two Swansea attackers is overkill.
2.Hazard instead of Fabregas because of uncertainty regarding Fabregas' position.
    3.Luis because I'm dead sure he'll start.
4.Always like to go light in defense at the start.

El Ahmadi is not for me, especially with Lambert trying to reinforce his midfield.

Too many better options around Nasri's price range for me and while he's a fairly consistent point scorer he doesn't seem to have enough goal threat for me at 8.5. Seems more of a luxury player to throw in for a couple weeks if City have good fixtures and our TV is way higher than 100. Bojan just does nothing for me, wouldn't want to punt on 3rd striker spot for someone who will not even be playing as the no.9

for 5.5m as a striker, if he's starting that's pretty good. If Naismith starts alongside Lukaku (like some on TFPL think) then I'll get him in stead and upgrade Nasri to Silva

Could do. Still think you're going to be taking an early hit to fix that third striker spot once a bandwagon emerges - but that's why they give us transfers after GW1 😉

                what's your striker lineup?

the cheap 3rd striker is the price paid to have a premium mid..if I'm confident Young will start regularly then I could also get him in as a 4th mid and upgrade the striker but I'm not sure how he'll fit into the plans with Shaw, Rafael and Valencia in the mix (though on his preseason, LVG has to give him the benefit of the doubt at the beginning)

That is something I am still trying to work out. I have Siggy and Jovetic currently as my 4th mid and 3rd striker. I am staying far away from the cheaper United options as I don't want to treble since I have Rooney and Mata. I don't like Jovetic really at all but I am struggling for another option. I sort of like Pelle even though that tough GW1 fixture, he is nailed as the main man and I think he could get decent service and am tinkering with the idea of going with him and Arnie instead. While I think Siggy will do well this year I don't think you could get too burned by not going with him from GW1. Really not sure though, but these are the things left I have to sort out I think.

Both are far from nailed. Bartley has the edge over Amat I guess but who knows - maybe Monk buys a new CB. Wisdom nailed for a couple weeks but we don't know how Gamboa will fit in or what system they will play. He could easily miss out some games.

Avoid Jagielka. Horrible starting fixtures, better options out there. Shelvey is a bit of a waste of funds, I'm assuming he will be benched most of the time, so having 5.5 sat around isn't great. Downgrade him to a 5 or 4.5 and keep the change, or use it to upgrade to Baines.

    Please RMT

    Begovic Gilks

Luis Evans Ben Davis Marriapa Wisdom

    Mata Cesc Sanchez Siggy Albrighton

    Rooney Costa Austin

I have gone for just playing begovic every week. No selection dilemma and a solid defence. Also i think gilks may get games in first team

Defense has spurs united and chelsea players along with marriapa and wisdom to chip in when davis fixtures are poor

Midfield i have the 3 big hitters. Think sanchez will score alot of points and can downgrade to ramsey if it emerges he can get as many points as sanchez. Mata has great fixtures and so does cesc. siggy is great value. albrighton = bench

%Rooney is just essential imo. Have costa but unsure having 3 chelsea.. What do you think. Could get in adebayor/bony/ lukaku abd upgrade elswhere. think austin is great value and will get goals.

    What do you all think?

Mariappa will not be starting for us for long. If TP doesn't buy someone before the Arsenal game he will do so before the end of the transfer window - would not start with Mariappa under any circumstance. Besides that looks fine. Liking the look of Austin with their kind fixtures to start.

Defence is much too expensive. Debuchy and one of Reid or Dann should go for players worth 4/4.5. You'll be playing Shaw, Terry and just one other most weeks. Then you can use the money to upgrade midfield/attack.

You need some United attack and your strikers are week. Ergo I think you need Rooney. Rejig your midfield to find the money for Crouch to Rooney. As far as I'm aware Crouch isn't even likely to play since Stoke bought DIouf.

if I was going to pick Sanchez and Yaya (who are very appealing players with tricky fixtures)...I'd still want Rooney, Mata and Hazard...and if you can put together a decent team with those 5 you're smarter than me

        Thanks.

I had Bojan in one draft with the intention of rotating him with Siggy but switched up to Austin. I'll look at it again, because I like the idea.

I threw Colo in there after reading the rotation article about filling in for heavy hitters. Newcastle offers a good sub for all of both Spurs' and Chelsea's tough fixtures, so those will be the times I use Colo. Other than that, it'll be Luis, Davies, and STO/SWA.

The wrinkle is that if Vermaelen goes to ManU, I'll swap him in for Luis and swap DDG out for Courtois to save the 0.5. I keep going back and forth on DDG/Luis or Courtois/Evans because either way Chelsea's rotation scares me; I figure a defender not playing at least offers more of a chance of a sub.

I really don't like spending cash on my keeper...DDG isn't a daft choice but I'd not want to spend that much and I'd never spend more

I wouldn't worry about Verm...he's injured and he's not going to make the start of the season because he's not training yet so far as I know...Barca rumours for weeks...if he goes to Utd EVERYONE will get him WHEN he's fit

Colo...Newcastle were abject at the back last season...it's good to look at fixtures of course but you really need to think hard about whether or not you want to invest in a team, whether you like the manager (does he rotate etc), whether the player's nailed on etc...Colo ticks some of those boxes but I still don't want to invest in their defence

there's a team who obviously have good defensive prospects that you're ignoring...their fixtures aren't as good but there's a decent chance you'll be glad all over if you invest in them

Had a thought and retooled the defense:

            Speroni - Green
            Cahill - Evans - Cameron - Taylor - Wisdom

I get the Chelsea & ManU representation I want, preserve the STO/SWA rotation, and Wisdom's fixtures offer reasonable coverage for Cameron if he doesn't play.

I am hunting for the team you teased... thanks for giving me something to think about!

Thoughts on alternative system to what most people here have gone for.

My team as it stands is a pretty conventional 3-4-3 with the usual suspects:

    GK: Begovic; (Myhill)
DF: Evans; Coloccini; Vlaar; van Aanholt; Rosenior (with all 5 in rotation)
MF: Hazard; Sterling; Ramsey; Sigurdsson; (Albrighton)
    FW: Rooney; Costa; Dzeko

After reading the article on 4-5-1 however, I thought I'd experiment. The idea would be to pack the defence and midfield out with high quality players and depend on just one high quality forward. In theory, you could keep this set-up (with the odd rotation) and aim to transfer the forward quite regularly, depending on form and fixtures:

    GF: De Gea; (Myhill)
DF: Luis; Cahill; Evans; Bruce; (Wisdom)
MF: Hazard; Yaya; Ramsey; Sterling; Sigurdsson
    FW: Rooney; (Naismith); (Barnes)

In practice, I'll probably stick with 3-4-3. But the advantage of the 4-5-1 might be - if the first few fixtures of the season go as we expect (a big if) - to accumulate a big lead on other players who stick with the more conventional formation. It would obviously be risky and depend upon certain clubs (e.g. United and Chelsea) performing highly at the start of the season.

Forwards are where the points are. 3-4-3 is the best again this season.

if you want good players with good fixtures why don't you have Mata?

      both those teams stink

I can accept the objections to the second team but the first one is fairly strong I think. The reasoning behind not including Mata in the first midfield (instead of, say, Sterling or Ramsey) is so I am not too reliant on Man United. Fairly decent reasoning I think.

What is your team then? That presumably doesn't 'stink'.
