Versus – Mata, Hazard, Sterling and Ramsey

There may be under a week left under the 2014/15 season gets underway but for many Fantasy managers, the midfield dilemma is yet to be resolved. In the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, in particular, the player price list has handed us numerous options to consider for our five-man midfields, with ten players coming in at 9.0 or over:

In this, our latest article for members, we take a look at four of the main contenders – Eden Hazard, Aaron Ramsey, Juan Mata and Raheem Sterling – currently on Fantasy radars.

Sterling has netted in two of his last four appearances and, after notching nine times last term, is backed by many to step up for Liverpool after Luis Suarez’ departure. Ramsey’s 10 goals and nine assists in just 23 appearances last season has catapulted the Welshman into the premium bracket at 9.0, with his strike in yesterday’s Community Shield handing us a timely reminder of his talents. Mata (9.0) has been one of Louis van Gaal’s star performers in the role in “the hole” in a new 3-4-1-2 formation, whilst the 10.0-priced Hazard, despite only returning to pre-season action last week, sits in 22% of squads ahead of fixtures against promoted pair Burnley and Leicester in his first two fixtures.

Casting an eye back to last season, then, we delve into the data and compare their respective displays. First up, we assess each player’s creativity and distribution.

    I think it's his preseason and price that tempts and the possible early step on the bandwagon. Mind you everything I try is poor.... I'm def keeping Roonpig and mata so would need to drop Evans to a £5m (non utd) and then isgrove to young as 5th mid but I kind of like Evans in defence and downgrading just screws my defence

    Keep looking at that to be honest. Rambo is a definite pick for me so can't change him. Thought of Sanchez to Haz/fab but I've got a feeling he will storm things (just my gut) and it's harder to upgrade to get him than to downgrade him if he flops

Would you guys go with Ferdinand or Chester knowing that my 3rd forward is Bojan. Ferdi rotates with stoke while Chester is in the more defnsivly solid Hull but doesnt rotate with Bojan

      But that doesn't mean Hennessey isn't better. Hennessey is taller and younger and has better command of his area.
      
      The biggest surprise for me last season was that Speroni kept Hennessey out.

      I just think their fixtures until GW10 are incredible and shouldn't be passed up. Yes, Pulis no longer manages them, he has gone to CPL instead, but Begovic still only conceded 36 goals last season from almost a full season, so they're hardly the leaky defence that everyone is making them out to be.

I have .5m ITB and want to upgrade 1 defender.
Keepers are Bego/Green.

        There was a WBA supporter posting here over the weekend in reply to a "best 4m defenders" thread. Sure, it's one fan, but a 0.1m loss is a risk that could be worth the reward. I think WBA stands to improve this season, especially with the investments they've made at the back.

I was watching this 45 minute video of Aaron Ramsey earlier. I'm genuinely so happy for him. From the leg break to where he is now - incredible. So mature, humble and honest. Very heartwarming to see him develop into a top class midfielder.

  Bruce not nailed, go for Hutton/Moore/Wisdom?/Bartley before him as they are far more likely to play.
  Kaboul could be the safest choice into Spurs defence early doors, but keep an eye out in case he loses his spot.
  
  Otherwise a very good team, very similar to mine.

      Interesting. Not sure if I want him anyway, I would rather Bartley so I can rotate him with Stoke. But now people are saying he won't play anyway because of some transfer rumours...is it too hard to get Swansea/Stoke rotation at a reasonable price that actually fits where they finished in the table last season? 10.5 for them is far too dear for a nailed on defensive rotation pair.

      Not too worried about the 4m Def as I will barely be playing him, but will keep an eye on the Bruce situation.
      
      Kaboul is my main worry in that team - not sure how certain I am of Spurs CS and their backline is uncertain. Doesn't seem to be any great value in the 5m defender range, might drop down to another 4.5m defender and spend that 0.5 elsewhere..

  Only thing I would say is that Foster rotates better with Krul. Not many on here going with Sanchez over Ramsey, could give you a real boost if it works out.

  If Liverpool's defense doesn't get decimated by injury like they did last year I fully expect them to surprise. Would give them some time to settle but if they can have a consistent selection there may be some value back there at some point, certainly. Would go without from GW1 though, especially with their tough fixtures in GWs2 and 3.
