Versus – Mata, Hazard, Sterling and Ramsey

There may be under a week left under the 2014/15 season gets underway but for many Fantasy managers, the midfield dilemma is yet to be resolved. In the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, in particular, the player price list has handed us numerous options to consider for our five-man midfields, with ten players coming in at 9.0 or over:

In this, our latest article for members, we take a look at four of the main contenders – Eden Hazard, Aaron Ramsey, Juan Mata and Raheem Sterling – currently on Fantasy radars.

Sterling has netted in two of his last four appearances and, after notching nine times last term, is backed by many to step up for Liverpool after Luis Suarez’ departure. Ramsey’s 10 goals and nine assists in just 23 appearances last season has catapulted the Welshman into the premium bracket at 9.0, with his strike in yesterday’s Community Shield handing us a timely reminder of his talents. Mata (9.0) has been one of Louis van Gaal’s star performers in the role in “the hole” in a new 3-4-1-2 formation, whilst the 10.0-priced Hazard, despite only returning to pre-season action last week, sits in 22% of squads ahead of fixtures against promoted pair Burnley and Leicester in his first two fixtures.

Casting an eye back to last season, then, we delve into the data and compare their respective displays. First up, we assess each player’s creativity and distribution.

Chances for 4.5 mid to play is higher than a 4.5 forward. So, B.

Struggling with this, trying to fit a City attacker in here, quite set on my midfield.

    XX 4.0
    Ward XX PvA Moore Wisdom
    Hazard Mata Ramsey Sigg Marney
    Rooney Sturridge XX

    A) Krul, Clyne, Dzeko
    B) Krul, Debuchy, Jovetic
    C) Begovic, Terry, Austin

I do like one of the City strikers too, just that it would really unbalance my defence. C would give more balance I admit, but am greedy for goals

I think he'll play at some point because he's a better player than Bardsley is and had a decent season at RB for Stoke (as opposed to Bardsley who was dropped for Sunderland).

But it's looking like he won't play against Villa at home. I'm guessing his fitness levels aren't high enough due to his extended holiday after the WC.

So I wouldn't get him on that basis. But hopefully we can pick him up a few GW's later for 4.4 or less

Got some issues with my team.

    DDG (Hamer)
van Aanholt B. Davies Chester (Ward Duff)
    Ramsey Fábregas Mata Lamela Henderson
    Costa Rooney(c) (Bojan)

Any advice welcomed, especially any answers to these questions:

    1) Is Hamer an alright 4.0 to choose? Figured he has the lowest team selected % so he's less likely to drop in price than the rest.
    2) Is Van Aanholt a better shout than Vergini?
    3) What's the word on B. Davies being nailed-on? Is Dawson perhaps the safer bet?
    4) Is it a bad idea to choose Lamela over Eriksen? He has been playing in the hole for preseason, and has been getting more goals as a result.
    5) Finally, I was tempted to downgrade Lamela to Siggy, which then gives me 2 m to spend in defence, preferably Duff -> Filipe Luis. With Siggy I could alternate 3-5-2 and 3-4-3 depending on fixtures, rather than playing 3-5-2 the vast majority of weeks and sideliining Bojan permanently. Any thoughts?

    Cheers!

      1. yes
      2. yes for now
      3. Spurs backline unsure, at a guess B davies 75% to start imo
      4. Flip a coin time, go with your gut and what you are happy with
      5. Dont downgrade Lamella. Either straight swap Hendersson to Sigg (for GW2?) or Henderson down to a 5.0 like Davies SOT and spend the 1m on Bojan to a 6.0 or upgrade def. I

Thanks a lot! Going by your advice I think I'll keep everything as it is for now, only debate that remains is B.Davies/Dawson.

And now I'm also wondering about Costa, a part of me just doesn't see him justifying his 10.5 price tag. I wish Spurs and City's strikers were more nailed-on, that'd really free up some funds to improve defence/Bojan.

      1) That means he's more likely to drop (less people need to sell him for a drop)
      2) Yes
      3) Not nailed, will be rotated with Rose. Dawson a worse shout.
      4) Toss a coin. My feeling is Erik though. Don't trust Lamela yet.
      5) I like the Siggy Bojan rotation much more than relying on Bojan every week. Also like Luis. I think he'll play the vast majority of games.

        1) Fair enough, so you think it's best to go for the most-chosen 4.0 (Myhill)?
        3) Damn, seems like there's no easy way into the Spurs defence under 6.0 then.
        5) How do you mean? If I don't have Siggy I wouldn't rely on Bojan at all, I'd play 3-5-2 and Bojan would rarely feature, if at all. If I do have Siggy I would rotate them as you say. Yeah, my only worry about Luis is just how many games he'll play, but you would think he'd have an important role in the squad.

        Thanks for the advice!

    Hi guys!

After making pretty decently last year and as Im enjoying more and more playing FPL (most of the time here on this site) I was wondering if there are any sites (of confidence obv) where I could play for money. I was looking for UFPL but unfortunatelly Im not allowed to enter the game as Im from Portugal. I hope there is nothing wrong with posting this kind of questions here.

    Many thanks!

So is it safe to board the Mariappa wagon again after Pulis' comments from yesterday?

Basically Mariappa missed the last friendly through a slight rib injury and "should be fine to play against Arsenal".

I won't even be playing him versus Arse anyway so can afford for him to miss out through injury and give him another weeks recovery time. And thankfully by all accounts the 19yr old had a stinker in the last friendly (though I didn't watch the game) so it should have confirmed to Pulis that he's not worthy of taking Mariappas place in the side?

    What do you guys reckon?

Tbf he's been first choice this whole time. the concern is that Pulis apparently wants to buy a left back so Ward can play right back

    What do you think

    Mannone/Krul
    Terry/Debuchy/Vlar/Bruce/Wisdom
    Mata/Febregas/Ramsey/Shelvey/El Ahmadi
    Rooney/Costa/Dzeko

Isla priced at 5m, same as Caulker, but has OOP potential as a wingback. Question is will be start GW1?

Besides risky cos of groin injury Albrighton who are decent 4.5m midfielder picks.

I don't know if there are any, Wanyama should play most games but will lack attacking returns.

West Ham might be a complete train wreck. I would not want Adrian as my only keeper.
The defence is cheaper than I would be comfortable with.

Agreed. Exactly what I was grappling with. But after reading Pulis' comments on Mariappa I think I have the solution. Will post another one in a few.

    Never heard of Jutkiewicz?

Those of you that have Albrighton, going to hang on to him now that he's hurt? If not, alternatives?

I think Chester or Neil Taylor are fairly nailed, possibly Marriappa.Clyne, Davies and Reid for 5.0.
