Scout Report – Abel Hernandez

Having lost striker Shane Long to Southampton earlier this month, Steve Bruce concluded his search for a replacement on a busy transfer deadline day. The Hull boss wrapped up the transfer of Abel Hernandez from Italian side Palermo for a club record fee of around £10 million and, after the 24-year-old signed a three year deal with the Tigers, Bruce immediately talked up the new boy’s prospects:

“Abel is a fantastic signing and highlights just how far the club has come in such a short space of time. He is an exciting talent and, like myself, I’m sure the supporters can’t wait to see him in action.”

The History

Hernandez’ career began in his native country Uruguay, where the centre forward – nicknamed ‘La Joya’ (or ‘The Jewel’) – rose through the ranks at Central Espanyol before being signed by rival side Penarol in the summer of 2008, at the age of 17. His strong performances as a regular starter for the Uruguayan club saw Palermo come calling a half a year later.

During his first season in Italy, Hernandez starred in the Palermo Under-19 squad who secured the famous Trofeo Giacinto Facchetti for youth teams in Serie A and B, and went on to make his first team debut. Across his four and a half seasons with the Sicilian side, Hernandez formed a formidable partnership with compatriot Edinson Cavani and experienced a loss in the final of the Coppa Italia, relegation to Serie B and then promotion back to the top flight last season, notching a total of 33 goals and 11 assists in 100 appearances.

On the international stage, nine goals in 11 appearances for Uruguay’s Under-20 side earned Hernandez his first senior cap in July 2010 at the age of 19, in which he instantaneously announced himself with a goal to earn a 2-0 friendly victory over Angola. A career highlight came in the 2013 Confederations Cup, when the frontman grabbed four goals in his team’s 8-0 group stage victory over Tahiti. In total, ‘La Joya’ has tallied seven goals in 14 international appearances, though he has continually struggled to earn a regular starting role ahead of the world-class talents of Cavani and Luis Suarez.

The Prospects
With a hectic final day of ins and outs now behind him, Bruce has some considerable tinkering to do before his side face West Ham after the international break. The acquisitions of Mohamed Diame, Gaston Ramirez and Hatem Ben Arfa will give the Hull boss plenty to ponder over in the middle of the park, and could result in a very different looking Hull team taking to the field in two weekends’ time from the one that lost out to Aston Villa on Sunday.

Hernandez’s prospects, on the other hand, don’t look so much of a mystery, as the record signing is bound to start alongside Nikica Jelavic in a front two, hence pitting the pair of forwards against each other for our attentions.

The knock-on effect from Hernandez’s arrival does not, however, bode well for a number of others in Hull’s ranks. Tom Ince had, until now, offered an out-of-position differential playing up top with Jelavic, but the young Englishman’s security of starts now look dubious. The 5.5-priced midfielder could drop in behind the front two if Bruce does continue with the 3-4-1-2 formation seen in the first few weeks of the season, though Ramirez, Ben Arfa and Robbie Brady do now offer alternatives in that position.

Hence, with so much uncertainness surrounding Bruce’s midfield, it would seem to leave Hull’s front two as our only viable routes into the Tigers’ attacking set-up for now. Handed a 7.0 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League game, Hernandez is a full 1.0 dearer than Jelavic and, bearing in mind the latter also has two goals in his last two appearances to boost his appeal, it would be a leap of faith to splash out for his costlier team-mate right now.

Nonetheless, there’s no denying that the physical presence and goal scoring capabilities of both players as Bruce looks to address a scoring record which saw his side net just 38 times last term. With home fixtures against West Ham and Crystal Palace allied with a trip to Newcastle to come in the next four Gameweeks, the stage is certainly set for Hernandez to plunder the points from the off and perhaps offer Fantasy managers a new ‘Jewel’ in our frontline crowns. In all honesty, though, when the likes of Everton’s in-form Steven Naismith is available for 5.3 and Arsenal new boy Danny Welbeck can be snapped up for 6.9, Hernandez has a lot of convincing to do if he’s to become a genuine Fantasy force.

But Rooney is obviously twice the player Costa is, so he should demand that sort of wage.

Rooney is captain and can play a number of positions, Costa is a foreigner who can only play one.

    Krul
    Cahill Clyne Caulker
    Ramsey Mata Siggurdson Sterling
    Costa Rooney Ade

    Elliot, Chambers, Wisdom, Marney

Thinking Mata should go - probably for a 7.0-7.5 mid, or Nasri (if going for City 'cover'), or Zaha.

Saints just signed a winger that should allow Tadic to move into a central position where he flourished at Twente. Plus he has great fixtures.

thanks IM, good shout. Have liked what i've seen of him so far, but yes noticed he's been on the left. He's nailed on to start though right? No chance of rotating with the winger

I can't see him being rotated at all, he's been their best attacking player and he was the big signing of the window for them.. I can see him moving into the middle, behind Pelle, with Mame (new winger) out on the wing.

He has been incredibly frustrating to own, but I think now is when he comes good.

It's certainly an option. I think I'd prefer a 4-2-3-1 style formation or even 4-2-2-2 like Man City use:

      DDG
      Rafael, Evans/Jones, Rojo, Shaw
      Herrera, Blind
      Di Maria, Mata
      RVP/Rooney, Falcao

Full-backs need to provide the width though otherwise it doesn't really work.

Another alternative is the 4-3-1-2 diamond that Liverpool play:

        Same back 5
        Blind
        Herrera, Di Maria
        Mata
        RVP/Rooney, Falcao

That's what the majority of people do and was the intention until the data was used by mpn-affiliated sites. Why? To drive traffic to their site! It's not cheating as that sounds harsh but scrapping the system because some have lost an unintended advantage, rubbish.
What tool do fpl provide, transfer in& out & ownership levels - that seems fair to me.
P.s. I used fiso & tfpl all the time but np big deal now their kapoot

Good points but I don't agree.
If Fpl decide that price rises/drops are to be part of the game they should divulge that information, what's all the secrecy about?
It's the era of the internet where information is freely available and I feel Fpl should wake up and smell the coffee, use it or lose it IMHO.
Granted player prices fluctuate in real terms but also in real terms I can check current relatively accurate prices on any given player using transfer market, all I'm asking is that Fpl give us some idea of a players value in their opinion based on verified stats.

              I get your point.
Looking at transfers in & out on Fpl gives you a fair idea of shift but not when. That's the main difference between myself & my brother for instance, we'll both get Costa but he'll probably pay .2m more than me as he'll wait But that's the gamble - Costa might get injured.
It's leveling the playfield by a very small margin and I can live that, that's my angle and not a big deal for me.

Thought so. Bench could be beefed up a bit. You won't want to play Vlaar during the run of nightmare fixtures, so he could be switched, as could Wizzy for a 4.5. Cattermole won't ever get more than 3 points and could be upgraded.

If you're not on a WC do them gradually since your starting XI are very good.

I guess the answer is that in an ideal words you wouldn't get rid of either. Fabregas is certainly in a better team but Ramsey is among the goals more and there is significantly more credit in this game for goals.

My only other option is to get rid of Rooney for a cheap striker and then upgrade JWP to Sterling but loathe to do that now.

    Krul-Elliot
    Jones-Azpili-Moreno-Duff-Wisdom

I like it overall, not totally sold on Pelle as an option, without that tap-in surely no one would be considering him?

I think you've covered off every base there. Is a United defender still a necessity? I'd be tempted to downgrade Jones to a £4.5m and get Ade in for Pelle if you can afford it. That or get one of the even cheaper options allowing a GK rotation.

      Good luck finalising it all.

Pelle is indeed a gamble. I really like your input, I did intact just do Wilson to Jones, I could always put it back and get the extra 1m.
        What about Begovic?

I definitely think Jones can go - yes you will miss out on a few CSs during this easy run of fixtures but that United defence is not to be relied upon - something tells me they are going for the 'we'll score one more than you' theory!

The £1m could do something like Marney to Ward-Prowse to give you a better squad, or maybe a keeper rotation option as Newcastle's defence was all over the place v Palace and their great fixtures don't last forever.

Is this a WC? Your 3 rotating £4.0m will work for now with Southampton's fixtures but there will be a fair few 1pts after that and there's no flexibility to change there because you've got all of the playing £4.0s! Wisdom for example might lose the place soon.

Personally I'd try and fine a way to upgrade one of the £4.0s to a Sunderland/Swansea/Hull etc defender.

Lovren looked top class against Spurs but great defenders does't always lead to clean sheets and I'm not convinced he's worth the £5.5m long term. Short term however their fixtures are so good and he really poses a threat in the box as well.

He has the skill to do so, just depends on where he plays in the system, he might not be provided with many opportunities to break forward ahead of Hazard / Schurrle / Willian / Oscar / Costa / Remy and he'll just plod along with assists all season and the odd goal..

Lots of assists and baps though.

That's the key point, he used to be a bonus magnet at Arsenal but assists don't seem to get the same credit nowadays. Personally in midfielders to have I'd prioritise Sterling, Ramsey, Fabregas as they 3 key elite ones in roughly that order.

Transfers in and transfers out are on the FPL transfers page, but totalFPL and FISO have to calculate NTI and NTO by subtracting one from the other.
Unfortunately the NTI and NTO figures thus calculated are not the same as the ones that FPL use to decide on their price changes.

NTI and NTO also used to be available on the FPL transfers page a few seasons back, but they were not simply equal to the difference between transfers in and transfers out.
This was probably because transfers made on wildcards or in creating new teams do not count as transfers for the purpose of deciding price changes till the end of the game-week if at all.

It's really nice being on a WC, I just got rid of Rooney, if he drops I'm considering getting him back in.

what are ufpl players doing with this rooney/falcao conundrum? Big decision to be made that you'll be stuck with till gw20 or so

Probably keeping Rooney for now, you can always do Loan deals if necessary. I am seriously considering Blind there as he is the type of player who could really work in UFPL

I have gone Falcao, even if he doesn't start the next couple he should start after that & with goals being worth 6 he could be gold dust

Feeling confident as I have Costa, Sturridge, Welbeck & Ings as well to cover the forward slots
