The Burning Question – Do you hold onto Ramsey? If not, who comes in?

We roll out our second Burning Question of the week this afternoon. Having run the rule over Wayne Rooney replacements in yesterday’s piece, we now assess the fallout from Aaron Ramsey’s hamstring injury.

Although his manager has suggested a three or four-week absence, the transfer market has gone into overdrive this week and the Gunners midfielder has been subject to over 270,000 trades out in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, resultantly dropping to 8.9.

With this in mind we ask the Burning Question: Do you hold onto Ramsey? If not, who comes in?

Jonty says…
Aaron Ramsey is too expensive a player to bench for anything more than a single Gameweek. But even if he had not injured his hamstring, a case had already been mounting for ditching the Welshman. Arsenal face Chelsea away this weekend and returns were unlikely, plus his form was on the slide with just one assist in four matches. Fixtures improve in the short term, but it would be hard to look past a returning Theo Walcott as Arsenal cover. In terms of replacements, doubling up on Southampton and drafting in the impressive Dusan Tadic as well as Graziano Pelle would be a good call. My pick, however, is David Silva ahead of City’s kind run of fixtures (avl, TOT, whm, MUN, qpr, SWA) over the next six matches – no other midfielder has created more chances than the little Spaniard over the last four Gameweeks.

D1sable says…
I see no reason to hold him – the game moves so fast and you need to react not only to the changing market prices but to keep pace with other Fantasy managers who will almost certainly be switching him out.

I think there are two good options here. Firstly, as Jonty has already mentioned, David Silva looks a good alternative but my other tip is the points machine Steven Gerrard.

I know this will be an unpopular choice but the man continues to defy reason. Despite almost playing as a third centre-half in some matches, Gerrard continues to churn out points and is currently the seventh highest scoring midfielder in the FPL game. With a fixture list that reads (WBA, qpr, HULL, new, CHE, cpl) and the returning Daniel Sturridge to help tuck away the chances he creates (and potentially win a few penalties), I see no signs of his points diminishing and fancy him to outscore the majority of other options over this period.

Spencer says…
With Ramsey out, I’ve gone for Chelea’s Cesc Fabregas. I’m still annoyed that I took him out of my team and think that he has points potential against every team. Alternatively, my other midfield option would be City’s David Silva, who’s looking much more consistent this season – the champions look free scoring, and you’d like to think that the Spaniard would be at the heart of most attacks.

Mark says…
While Arsene Wenger has indicated that Ramsey could well return shortly after the international break (and therefore miss one, maybe two matches), I’m aware that the Gunners’ boss has often been optimistic with his appraisal of his player’s prognosis. Ramsey is a prize asset who won’t be rushed back and I don’t see any option but to part company and shop for a replacement.

Although the Gunners have a wealth of talent in that area, I’d personally favour opting for Danny Welbeck up front and scan the other squads for a suitable replacement.

Right now, I’d favour gambling on Dusan Tadic. While Chelsea and United have a cast of candidates, I see their attacking points being shared around, while I fully expect Tadic to bloom in the short-term with his schedule and the Saints’ current form. Like Graziano Pelle, the statistics suggest we have a potential heavy-hitter on our hands, and while he hasn’t quite delivered, I favour taking the punt on him, particularly as I’m overlooking Pelle in favour of Welbeck and Sergio Aguero as my wing-men for Diego Costa.

Long-term, I’ve one eye on Theo Walcott and I feel it’s inevitable that Alexis Sanchez will explode – it’s going to be a question of timing our investment to coincide with an uninterrupted period of pitch time. Tricky, but I feel that the Fantasy managers who can anticipate Arsene Wenger’s midfield line-up best will have a huge advantage.

Ryan says…
Picking a player with both form and fixtures is a golden rule in Fantasy football. Everything has to stack up when making such crucial transfer decisions. Ramsey is a big-hitter and takes up a significant portion of the budget but, truth be told, he was in poor form and probably needed to be sold anyway.

The difficulty, however, is that there are few big hitting midfielders with both form and fixtures. If you don’t already own them, Cesc Fabregas and Angel Di Maria are both about to embark on a run of tough fixtures. Liverpool’s form has dipped of late, reducing the appeal of Steven Gerrard and Raheem Sterling – although the return of Daniel Sturridge could be the catalyst for an upturn in fortunes. David Silva, who for so long has flattered to deceive, continues to do so – the Spaniard consistently racks up strong creativity stats but has only taken a measly five shots on goal this season.

By contrast, Dusan Tadic’s 16 efforts is second only to Sterling’s tally, whilst he’s also created 12 chances and has a strong run of fixtures to follow – the perfect combination. With just 2.6% ownership in the FPL game, the Saints playmaker looks like a differential well worth owning.

7shadesofsmoke says…
Aaron Ramsey’s injury will come as a cruel blow to the faithful 30% or so of FPL managers who’ve held on to him through a relatively barren spell since Gameweek 2. Unfortunately for Ramsey’s owners, he’s no longer an over-performing circa-6.0 man and his expected absence until early November will weigh heavy in the pockets of frustrated Fantasy managers who’ve seen the likes of Raheem Sterling and Cesc Fabregas deliver on a more regular basis while Angel Di Maria shot to the fore at Old Trafford.

With expected price falls on the horizon and the chance to leap onto steadier ships, selling Ramsey looks like a solid option and those who don’t have one of Fabregas or Sterling have an easy solution staring them in the eye. Anyone else could be tempted by David Silva’s excellent chance creation, with strong fixtures and a fit Sergio Aguero to feed, while Samir Nasri’s groin injury could thrust Jesus Navas into the picture – the winger has produced chances more frequently than both Silva and Fabregas when given the chance this season.

The Tinkerman says…
One key skill to FPL is to quickly spot trends and act fast. In this case, an injury to Ramsey – a player with no goals and one assist in his last four – is a great excuse to bring in another player who you have most likely missed out on up to now and who is quietly showing the kind of form that arguably makes him one of the most valuable midfielders in the game: Nacer Chadli. The Spurs midfielder has managed four goals in five appearances this term, regardless of the fact he missed Gameweek 1 and is yet to complete 90 minutes, and enjoys a modest price tag of 6.2. Add the fact that he is a relative differential, with less than 10% ownership, and his appeal over other Ramsey replacements is obvious.

Many will feel that they prefer to pick a premium option for their Ramsey alternative. However, this approach could prove to be unwise given the fact that, after six Gameweeks, Chadli sits joint-top of the FPL midfield rankings. If he continues this form and the chances keep falling his way, there’s no reason he can’t go on to be one of the top-scoring midfielders by the end of the season. Forced off during the north London derby, he’s since been included in today’s Europa League squad and is my number one Ramsey replacement.

no i dont agree fab would be a better fpl prospect than adm and i am a cfc fan.
the thing is adm was used in different positions in madrid and was not really integral to the team so you can't expect him to score much. he was limited to assists and don't forget only messi and ozil has more assists than di maria since 2010. now imagine di maria in a team where he is the best player, he feels integral to the team. there are more responsibilties on his shoulders . i expect him to score more this season. see the goal against leicester, it shows a man with confidence . chances were he would have passed to ronaldo or bale last season, he has confidence to shoot this season
as for fab, he is out of my team after this gw. i dont think he would score much this season. so he is limited to assists. i would go for sanchez. i feel he would be fpl top midfielder this season.if i could afford
    fab adm sterling sanchez

    aguero costa welbeck

i would keep fab but unfortunately i can't , so i would use chadli

but that's just my stupid opinion

I'm contemplating a move from Fab to Alexis myself but I don't know what is going on in Wenger's head.

ADM doesn't score enough goals to justify his price, he is 10 million now!

yeah I wish I hadn't got ADM in last week but after Leicester my knees jerked so hard they became my elbows

am either gonna downgrade to Tadic/Mane and leave cash or just keep till Lord Theo is back

A move to Tadic/Chadli sounds very sensible. If you're getting rid next week, you might be better off going with Tadic

I think so yes, which I think is a poor assumption. Our strikers are good, but they are not Ronaldo

but ADM is at the centre of everything we do from an attacking POV, this wasn't always the case at Real, plus he has set-pieces now, something Ronny monopolises

Everton don't have the squad for that. Their main problem is that Oviedo has been injured, so they have no one to cover Baines

@Davies - leicester expert. You asked me to have a look, so here you go: 🙂

    Courtois Gilks
    Clyne Colo PVA Wisdom Moore
    ADM Silva Sterling Siggy Chadli
    Aguero Costa
    0.7 ITB

    - I assume you're not on a WC. Courtois is a safe pair of hands. I wouldn't pick him myself due to the price but he has real CS potential in any fixture.
    - Clyne, Wisdom, Moore, are decent picks. PVA's fixtures aren't great but if rotated properly he could still be a good option. Coloccini should be your priority in that defense, as even in good fixtures he can't be counted on to get a CS. Might be worth monitoring the Pardew situation over the Int.Break though as teams often make manager changes then, and Pulis or Moyes would instantly make Coloccini favourable again.
    - As TFF said earlier I'm not sold on ADM either. I think he's a red herring just like Lamela was after his QPR performance. ADM only scored against Leicester and QPR remember, and did nothing against West Ham. Probably not worth a FT though until GW9 when the fixtures get REALLY hairy.
    - If you don't have a spare FT you should be fine this weekend though. Just play clyne-moore-pva at the back.

    Comments on your plan:
3 weeks of -4's - you should avoid hits as much as possible

    Courtois > 4.5 - I'm very hesitant to waste a FT on GK's unless they're injured.
Coloccini > Baines - makes sense if you have the cash in gw8
PVA > Chambers - bit sideways, and you should have bigger priorities
Siggy > Boyd - I'm not sure dumping Siggy to move to Welbeck is so smart, especially if you have to use 2FT's to do it.
Silva > Tadic - Smart move. Tadic plays more advanced and is on FK's and pens. No brainer if you have a FT.
Vaz Te > Welbeck - You could do worse than welbeck. if you want to go for a 433 he is ideal.

    It'll leave me with:

    4.5 4.0
    Baines Clyne Chambers Wisdom Moore
    ADM Sterling Tadic Chadli Boyd
    Aguero Costa Welbeck
    0.4 ITB

Your new team looks solid, but you would be gambling with your goalies unnecessarily.

    Hope that helps 🙂

He's getting the nod ahead of Tadic this weekend and Siggy next weekend so I'm going to be really disappointed if he fails. More so if Tadic has his breakout game in the first game I bench him in when all his new owners luck out on his haul.

QPR have been dogshyt and Burnley were soft at set pieces this weekend though so I'm confident Downing will deliver more than Tadic/Siggy in those two fixtures.

                That's the problem with a good 5th midfielder when you're going with 3-4-3 😀

But I really hope, for your sake, that he does well. His chances created stat is immense. Good call

Yeah I can see both sides of the argument. But I like having a good 5th mid so I can avoid fixtures like Fabregas at City, Tadic at Spurs, and Siggy at Stoke. My midfield benchings have worked well so far as I've avoided 2 blanks from Siggy and 1 from Fab in the last 3 gw's alone while my other options scored better. I like the security of knowing I have a great 1st sub if needed as well.

Well, about Baines playing in the Europa, I think that is only because Oveido JUST returned from a big injury. Otherwise, he is a decent player, and (if Hibbert can play, he can).

By the time next Europa game comes, Oveido could well be 90-minute fit, and Baines might start getting the midweek off.

    Just my opinion.

So if Di Maria scores against Everton at the weekend, will everyone think he's essential again?

Finding it a bit short-sighted that people are doubting his FPL credentials on the basis of the last game in which he failed to score (when United were down to 10 men for more than a third of the game) as opposed to two in which he did.

      A combination of the continued circus act going on at Old Trafford, the tighter fixtures and the emergence of some excellent alternatives keep the door open for him to leave;

Sanchez for premium could become a monster
Silva is cheaper with phenomenal fixtures and pedigree
Tadic is cheaper and has awesome outputs and fixtures
Chadli is much cheaper with excellent form
      Walcott could return soon
and I have Fabregas, Siggy and Sterling already, who are all better value IMO.

ADM is awesome, but he is definitely the most expendable in my MF.

        Interesting arguments.

To be fair, Silva had one very good season and for the second half of that one he was good for nothing more than a string of 2 pointers.

And Tadic has stats but not much in the way of an end product, similar to Silva in that respect, albeit at a more attractive price point. Fabregas is hardly setting the world alight recently; granted he is in the best team in the league but from a returns perspective I would question his position ahead of Di Maria in your team.

        We shall see I guess.

Best duo to bring in for Ramsey & Rooney?

    A) Chadli & Aguero (Terry -> Baines or WC next week)
    B) Tadic & Welbeck (Hutton -> Baines next week)

And if doing A would you Wildcard this lot for GW8 to load up on ARS, EVE etc?

For as much stick as our beloved Triggerlips gets, he is right about TV.

Even with the large number of budget options available, any decent WC team I try is left with a crappy defense. My TV is pathetic and I am sure sooner or later it will impact my points / rank.

      +42.

What is your budget for your defence?

I am not on a WC yet but just looking at what my TV would get me.

I am looking to do Rooney & Terry to Aguero & Wilson this week, perhaps, which will leave my defense in total shambles.

Yeah - Naylor, Caulker, Chester, and Moore to go with JT.

JT seems the only option to free up money for Kun, no?

            Sterling, Cesc, ADM, Siggy, Albrighton
            Costa, Pelle, Rooney

No. But I would offload him anyway, for Clyne/Bertrand.

If I were you, I would get Welbeck.

Costa - Pelle - Welbeck is intriguing but it feels a bit too light for my liking, maybe I am blinded by the prices & Danny's immediate fixture.

"Beloved" is probably one of the last adjectives I'd use about him Pepin, but he is correct about the TV.

Absolutely right. Even a 0.5 difference in TV can be the difference between Chambers and Wisdom or Hutton for example, and that can have a big effect on your points haul most weeks.

I always prioritize players who look like they're gonna rise in price when considering transfers. Not at the expense of points, but its a massive factor.

but the market conditions are the same for everyone.

We all have to work with the same start up funds and the same transfer market.

TV is an important variable IMO so i have always kept it in mind when making my moves, I don't think changes to market conditions have any impact on my ability to manage finances in relation to other managers.

Yeah, I have held on to players dropping in value but gotten the better end of the points - Mata initially, Terry, Rooney, even Caulker. So points-wise I am OK but TV-wise, I am screwed.

I think its one of the most difficult factors - knowing when to sell (more than when to buy) this season.

I shipped Rambo a few weeks ago when ADM arrived and managed to avoid price falls while riding ADM and the points paid off. I also shipped Rooney for Balotelli that week and the points went titties upwards - but i swapped to Agüero last week and i ended up avoiding Rooney's red while Balotelli looked after my money. Aguero made the points back last week.

A lot of it is pure luck, but playing the market is a skill to a degree and i think this season is more fun than knowing all the moves like the past seasons i've played.

good post. I'm enjoying it as well. You've got to be lucky but to excel at the TV game you need some actual thought, planning, and good timing.

Still not convinced by him from a FF perspective. I'm going to have 2FTs next GW and I can really see me downgrading him to Tadic to fund Caulolker to Baines.

I can fund Caulker to Baines alreadt, Mane is tempting me, but it's just when I do it tbh, just can't find a good week. I want him GW8 to give me some MNF involvement

    Bego (McCarthy)
    Azpil - Taylor - Clyne (Pieters/PvA)
    ADM - Downing - Sterling - Siggy - Fabregas
    Ulloa - Costa (Pelle)

Madness to have Pelle on the bench, ah well. Reckon I'll have a good week? I've averaged about 60 p/w so far.

Hmm... probably one of Downing's best chances to really shine this season though, I'll see what Spurs are like tonight.
