Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Sigurdsson at the Double

Gylfi Sigurdsson bags a brace as Iceland see off Holland. Graziano Pelle nets on his debut for Italy. Edin Dzeko is in the goals for Bosnia. Eden Hazard and Vincent Kompany recover from injury to start for Belgium but Nacer Chadli misses out with a hip problem.

SIGURDSSON’S ICELAND GOAL SPREE CONTINUES

Gylfi Sigurdsson added to his strike against Latvia on Friday by bagging a brace for Iceland in their shock 2-0 win over Holland in last night’s Euro qualifier. The Swansea midfielder opened the scoring with a spot-kick before adding the second just before half-time with a precise volley.

The Scout Says: With six goals and six assists in his last twelve appearances for club and country, it’s fair to say that Sigurdsson is looking as desirable now as he has done all season. The only qualm thus far has been his goal threat in a Swansea shirt, and his 45% ownership will now be hoping that the 6.8-priced midfielder can finally transfer his scoring form to the league – it’s still just one strike for the campaign for the Icelander, and that was back in Gameweek 1, with team-mates Wayne Routledge and Nathan Dyer both overshadowing him in that regard with two and three goals respectively.

PELLE AMONGST THE GOALS FOR ITALY

Graziano Pelle grabbed a debut goal for Italy in their 1-0 European Championship Qualifier victory over Malta last night.

The Scout Says: Whilst Gameweek 7 served up a rare blank for Pelle, last night’s strike could help re-ignite the form that saw him return points in each of the previous four Gameweeks. Withdrawn on 74 minutes after his side went down to 10 men, Pelle should be brimming with confidence when the Saints face Sunderland on Saturday afternoon. Following the Black Cats clash, Ronald Koeman’s men have four more enticing fixtures to look forward to (STK, hul, LEI, avl), and Pelle, at 7.9, is likely to continue to make a mockery of his mid-price valuation.

MIXED NEWS FOR CITY

Man City’s Edin Dzeko netted for Bosnia and Herzegovina last night as their Euro Qualifier with Belgium ended level pegging at 1-1. Vincent Kompany lined up against his team-mate for the Belgians after recovering from the knock sustained in his previous international outing, though Manuel Pellegrini now has worries over the services of fellow centre-back, Eliaquim Mangala, as the defender is a doubt for France’s next qualifier against Armenia this evening with a thigh problem.

The Scout Says: He may have only scored in just one of his last seven league appearances, but Dzeko still seems likely to start against Spurs this weekend, despite the fact that Stefan Jovetic is available after recovering from injury to feature as a sub for Montenegro. Another blank, however, and the Bosnian will begin to test the patience of both his manager and his 10% ownership, with Jovetic waiting in the wings to earn a recall to the starting XI. Meanwhile, at the back for City, Mangala’s injury concerns could allow Martin Demichelis a route back into Pellegrini’s back four alongside Kompany – with decent fixtures ahead for the Citizens (TOT whm, MUN, qpr, SWA), the Argentine could be set to profit if he can re-earn his spot.

HAZARD BACK FOR BELGIUM

Having missed out on his side’s drubbing of Andorra last week with a knock, Eden Hazard returned to Belgium’s starting line-up last night and played the full 90 minutes in the draw with Bosnia.

The Scout Says: Hazard’s run-out last night should ease worries ahead of Chelsea’s clash with Crystal Palace on Saturday. Doubts over his fitness have kept investment relatively low up until now, with only 17,000 managers having brought him in so far this week despite his goal in Gameweek 7, but that number could be set to increase now his injury fears have subsided. Nonetheless, with an ownership at 13%, he continues to look a truly explosive differential option as Chelsea face up to three leaky defences in their next three fixtures (cry, mun, QPR).

Chadli Misses Out with Hip Problem

The Tottenham midfielder played no part in Belgium’s match last night after picking up a hip problem during the warm-up.

The Scout Says: With four goals and an assist in the first seven Gameweeks, Chadli has been a man transformed this season under Mauricio Pochettino. Sitting just four points off the top of the FPL midfield standing, he’s owned by a mere 11% of Fantasy managers, with over 57,000 drafting him in over the international break. Given that he’s set to travel to City this weekend, non-owners will be prepared to monitor the situation for now but with Newcastle, Villa, Stoke and Hull in the following four, he has the fixtures to challenge Sigurdsson at the summit. Should he miss out, Christian Eriksen has now served up two sets of double figures in the last four and has dropped to 7.8 – with a 7% ownership, he’s another player who could be set to prosper.

AMAT CLOSING IN ON RETURN

Swansea centre-back Jordi Amat is confident that he will recover from the knee injury he sustained against Chelsea midway through September in time for his side’s clash with Everton in Gameweek 10:

“I’m getting better every day and I’m feeling good. I was glad we had the international break because it means I’ve had more time to recover. I’m working hard each day with the staff here and hopefully I’ll be ready to play in around two weeks. I’m hoping to train during the week of the Leicester game with the aim of being in contention the following week.”

The Scout Says: Having started Swansea’s first four fixtures of the season and picked up consecutive clean sheets against Burnley and West Brom, Amat was looking great value for his 4.5 price tag before he succumbed to injury. His spell on the sidelines has given summer signing Federico Fernandez a route into Garry Monk’s first XI, and the two now look set to compete for a starting role alongside Ashley Williams in the heart of defence for the remainder of the season. Fantasy managers will certainly be backing Amat to win the contest, with the Spaniard coming in at 0.6 cheaper than Fernandez, though he may have his work cut out in reclaiming his starting role upon his return from injury – the Everton clash in Gameweek 10 is followed by the arrival of Arsenal at the Liberty before a trip to Man City in Gameweek 12.

WALCOTT RETURNS TO FULL TRAINING

Arsenal’s Theo Walcott is back in full training as he reaches the final stages of recovery from the knee injury suffered back in January.

The Scout Says: With the Gunners’ injury list beginning to mount, Walcott’s long-awaited return will come as a great relief for Arsene Wenger. Fantasy managers should, however, be cautious about immediately racing for the England man’s services – after missing just seven league matches with injury early on in the 2013/14 campaign, Wenger then utilised him as a substitute on four successive occasions upon his return, playing a total of just 60 minutes across those fixtures. If that record is anything to go by, it may still be a while before we see the 9.0-priced Walcott in the Gunners’ starting XI this season, though it’s worth noting that Walcott still managed to pick up a pair of assists during that period, in spite of his limited pitch time.

How Siggy is 6.8m is beyond me, the price system sucks and it punishes those who got on the bandwagon early, he should be 8m + Same with Costa and pretty much every player right now who has ridiculous ownership should be alot higher in price. Makes the game template, boring and I shouldn't be captaining Costa constantly if i want to keep my rank. Bring back how it was before I say

      No.

'I shouldn't have to captain the highest scoring players to get the highest rank.' No.

Quicker price rises would increase the bandwagon mentality you are deriding. Even before, Siggy would never be 8 million by now. And even if he was, that'd make life only marginally harder, because there's other great value players who will mean you can always find a way into a high-scoring squad.

The point I'm trying to make is that it de-values the differential or at least going for a differential because of the high ownership, if the punt goes wrong then you have a massive slide down the rankings. I captained Siggy last week and even though he got 20 points, not captaining Costa (12pts) meant i lost about 200k places which is ridiculous. 8million was an over-estimate but for his rise in ownership, it should be alot more you have to say

This is the plus of it, you can go for a player for 2-3 weeks and then bring back the original player very cheaply. Lessens the risk of getting Aguero in immediately because you know he's not going to sky rocket

Exactly.......and the fact that I'm top 10k, have that exact team and I am tempted to ditch Cesc who I don't want to ditch so I can have a punt on Mane or Sanchez demonstrates the problem. Otherwise I will maybe move up rank by 1-2k or drop by 3-4k, it's just a bit boring really.

The fact that it's not prohibitive to move players in and out is good for breaking the template. Nobody would sell any of ADM, Sterling, Fabregas, Siggy, Costa or Kun if they had risen say twice as much as this season...

Long term, slower price rises will lead to far more variety in players as going for differentials doesn't have the double whammy of losing points AND massive value if you get it wrong.

Be honest with yourself, the price changes have nought to do with the current template (they score highly, people buy them...)

Your first point is right but at the same time there would be people unable to bring in ADM now as he'd cost nearly 11m for example, or if they were to bring him in, would have to make a number of other sacrifices.

I agree though that people would buy those players regardless but the point is that they would make sacrifices potentially and those who managed to get on the bandwagons early would be rewarded not only with the points but also the TV which can be used in selling value later on.

I agree with you that it's been pretty boring (in fact I think I'd be much better off if I hadn't made a transfer since the start of the season tbh, bar Ramsey and Rooney). My point is that it's dull due to the players scoring, not the changes they made to price rises.

Quicker price rises just leads to an increase in herd mentality as like you say if you don't get on early then it's insanely expensive. To counter this more WC early, take hits etc so they can get those players in.

I do think that while the current template is more affordable because of the changes, I don't think it will take long before fixture swings and players returning (Walcott and Benteke for example) to allow people to transfer out players like Cesc.

              Remember these?

13/14: Coleman, Yaya, Ramsey, Hazard, SAS
12/13: Walcott, Mata, Bale, Fellaini, Michu, RVP, Suarez

Yeah I see what you mean. A template will always form, no doubt about that as is evident from 13/14, 12/13, every season in fact. It's just the fact that quicker price changes mean that more sacrifices need to be made, more hits, less TV which adds up to more people not being able to afford ALL of the template. At the moment, not only can people afford the template midfield, Costa and Pelle/Welbeck, they can also squeeze in Aguero or Baines + Ivan despite not jumping on ADM/Cesc from the start. Had Cesc/ADM/Siggy risen with the speed of previous seasons, they would be 10.5 and 11m almost by now (slight exaggeration) and so people would have to settle for Moore instead of comfortably getting Baines in as well.

That's certainly true, but then it's a case of how much reward is fair? Obviously this question is basically impossible to answer. The only real reward the people that got on from the start are the points as they are the only thing separating them from the person who bought the player immediately after the haul. In reality this should be reward enough as getting say 10 points here and there from frequently picking these good options builds up to a massive advantage over the bandwagoners.

The way I see it is the slower the price risers the greater the opportunity for the more skillful FPL managers to hop from player to player preempting form or fixtures or whatever, without feeling trapped in their current crop of players who they've got too much invested in for it to be worthwhile moving.

Fast price rises just leads to more cases of the so-called season keeper (or at least harvests that mentality amongst a lot of managers – Mark mentioned this a lot I think with regard to Michu or Ramsey) as it's prohibitively expensive to buy them back later on, unless injured of course.

That's a good point as well for the season keeper. Could make points for both sides of the argument all day long tbh and both have their merits.

Repost, posted on false page... After taking some people's here suggestion that dropping Costa is madness into consideration, which of the following is better?

    Mannone (Heaton)
    Clyne, Baines, N.Taylor (Moore, Wisdom)
    ADM, Sterling, Downing, Tadic (Boyd)
    Aguero, Welbeck, Costa

    2 FTs 0 in Bank

    A) Sterling + Tadic -> Sanchez + Henderson
    B) Sterling + Downing -> Cazorla + Henderson
    C) Tadic + Clyne -> Kranjcar (or any other 5.0 mid) + Zabaleta and Sterling -> Walcott once the latter is fit.
    D) Sterling + Tadic -> Kranjcar (or any other 5.0 mid) + Sanchez and next week Downing -> Chadli

    Any opinions appreciated.

Very Interesting to see someone with the exact (bar Wisdom for Moore and Baines for Terry) team as me.
      Hows the OR?

I'm saving this weeks FT btw. Good team.

Just inside top 23k currently. Had a decent first 4 weeks, slightly slipping down in the last 3, mainly due to no ADM. Was thinking about getting him in this week but am 0.1 off swapping him with Fab and wont take a hit. As he has some tricky fixtures coming up I'm going to stay stubborn and not get him in, if i absoulutely have to ill get him gw 11 or 13.

How's your rank? And yeah I've had Hendo starting most the week, still undecided on that one. I need to get a cheap 5th in to avoid these scenarios.

Nowhere near as good. 170k roughly here.

Made some really bad decisions since the start which I've been kicking myself about. Didn't (C) Costa for his hattie, didnt play hendo this week (played tadic over him, I have no idea why looking back of course) and leaving Wisdom and Hutton out on their killer weeks has killed me. Really frustrating but I could be doing worse.... TV is good (104.1 and WC still intact).

I'm also not getting ADM in. Going to be really stubborn about it and hope it doesnt bite me like Yaya did last year (until I eventually got him in).

I do feel this season is a good marathon for me so far though, I've only had the Rooney/Ramsey situation as injuries for me and I seem to be ahead of the curve with most of my players. Only DDG has lost me value that I can think of. It could be a good year for me yet I just have to stop making those silly errors.

Yeah I had an awful first 6 or 7 weeks last year that I never properly recovered from, so feeling much better about this years start. I also had Hendo on the bench last week, where he's been most of my GWs.

I'm on 103.7m with WC intact. Lost value on DDG and Terry, they were both earmarked for the boot but have done well for me the last 2 weeks, so I'm in no hurry to get them out. Struggling to find a decent GK option.

Next week I'll probs be getting Welbeck & a cheap mid for Ulloa and Hendo. Or baines/azpi in for terry.

Yeah seem good moves. Sorry I should have specified. TV 103.7 and .4 ITB.
Hadn't thought much further than next week I think I'll do DDG > Guzan now I've seen his next long string of fixtures and that they don't look too bad.
I got rid of Terry couple of weeks back and it did pay off as Bertrand paid me back with a goal, but I've hated seeing the points come in naturally. Getting baines in early again ahead of the curve I'm happy with. Calculated risk that paid off with a 10 pointer I think it was and I was fortunate to have DDG on the other end of the penalty.

Look good moves for Welbeck and a cheapy, but I am hesitant because I think Hendo could be a really good differential this season..... we will see.

We should find out more after City's press conference but as they are chasing Chelsea and Spurs are no 'easy team', safe to assume Kun will at the very least start that game if fit.

I'm also concerned about his, however a friend told me, and I intend to agree, that Man City can't afford to lose pace with Chelsea, he's their top dog, and he should have enough time to get back and get into the routine.

Pity the 12:45 game teams aren't announced in time of the deadline.

    Am I right in thinking:-

The choices are (assuming 80% of serious players have Costa)

Have Aguero as well, but have a slightly unbalanced team
have Welbeck/Pelle to join a third striker (also may be Welbeck/Pelle) and have a much more balanced team probably with Baines

At present I'm option 1 (favouring Hazard over Fab also hurts my balance a little)

Is this a good use of 2 FTs this week?

    Fabregas + Pieters ➡ Siggy + Baines?

Don't want to lose Fabregas, but Pieters is dead weight, with Siggy and Baines pretty essential.

Slight dilemma this week, any advice please?
Moreno->Baines this week or wait until next week? Both have excellent fixtures this week, neither likely to change in price, Moreno maybe gives me a slightly better deifferential for 1 week.

    a) change this week
    b) change next week instead (other more pressing issues may occur and double transfer could be useful)

b-- Am a bit surprised many are quick to dismiss the damage a fast-paced Villa team [with Benteke back no less] could inflict on an Everton back 4 that's struggling for form. Fair enough, Coleman back should improve matters but Howard hasn't looked convincing in goal in the games I've watched. Baines could very well get another penalty or assist via a free-kick or corner but I'd save that FT.

Can't decide what to do with my 2FT. Any suggestions?

    Krul - McCarthy
    Clyne - PVA - N. Taylor - Wilson - Hutton
Di Maria - Fabregas - Sterling - Siggy - Boyd
    Costa - Falcao - Welbeck

    2.5 ITB.
