The Community Round Up

The post festive schedule hangover proved hard to shrug off this week, particularly among those who benched one of the undisputed star of Gameweek, 20 Harry Kane. Our community articles, members tables and hot topics over the past week offer key advice on dealing with the festive fall out as well as tackling the Fantasy Premier League January wildcard. We look back on the last seven days, whilst discovering just how crucial benching or playing Kane was to the standings in our community leagues.

The Community Articles

The New Year ensures that Fantasy Premier League managers are gripped by Wildcard fever, as we eagerly plan how to dust off the festive blues and create the perfect squad to take on the second half of the season. Following on from Saata’s analysis of budget goalkeeper rotation, Triggerlips was on hand to provided his own quick start guide to Wildcarding, outlining the pitfalls to watch out for when contemplating the January surgery.

With the Wildcard likely to dominate community activity throughout the month, we’ll be starting a new series of articles from next week. The Rate My Wildcard Team (RMWCT) community articles will feature the thoughts of one of our contributors on their own wildcard plans, helping to kickstart the discussion and offer the community a chance to submit their own RMWCT.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

Each month we offer a £25 Amazon voucher to your favourite community article. The vote for December’s best article launched this week and closes on Tuesday January 6. Please do show your appreciation for our writers and take some time to look through last month’s articles and vote here.

The Hottest Topics

Harry Kane is inevitably going to find his way into thousands of squads in January. His 18 points in Gameweek 20 against Chelsea was arguably the most surprising story of the festive schedule list, judging by the number of Fantasy managers who benched the Tottenham striker. Granville posted shortly after the final kick of Gameweek 20 to reveal he was one of the devastated unfortunates, setting up an impromptu discussion to support those who shared his pain.

Inspired by those events, we started this discussion on the lessons learned from the festive schedule, including reference to the dangers of benching players like Kane and having too many options over Christmas period, anticipating rotation that never really arrived.

With winter Wildcards active, Kane has already seen an unprecedented rise in ownership, with 146,000 drafting him in within 12 hours of his Gameweek 20 heroics. A 0.3 price rise is almost a certainty before Gameweek 21, but O’Shaunessy offered a note of caution. According to his analysis Kane is lagging behind other strikers when it comes to shots in the box, indicating that he may find it tougher in coming weeks to notch up high returns.

Eden Hazard was another hero of the festive schedule who, according to KTK Interiesta, has now well and truly scotched the theory he is ineffective away from Stamford Bridge. Hazard’s 24-points across his last three away games certainly back up his argument. With solid home form as well, it was no surprise to see Hazard mentioned in Black Knights discussion on early captaincy thoughts for Gameweek 21.

The community aren’t feeling quite so enthusiastic about Raheem Sterling. The Liverpool midfielder had mixed fortunes over Christman, despite being fielded as a striker. Despite having a continued run of favourable fixtures, Bull was among those wondering whether Sterling is worth drafting in after poor returns across his last two Premier League outings.

While Sterling failed to deliver on expectations, he was unlikely to feature in Saniul’s discussion that prompted the community to name their worst single transfer move of the season so far. Kickit probably claimed the prize for the most disastrous decision, transferring out both Dusan Tadic and Graziano Pelle ahead of their epic Gameweek 8 hauls: hari-kari stuff.

Finally, with news of Steven Gerrard’s departure from Liverpool and his impending move to a Major League Soccer franchise, Henzrd prompted the community to take a step back from Fantasy Football and consider the growth of the beautiful game in the US. This discussion led to some fascinating analysis of the commercials involved, with Mata-Is-The-Juan and RVP is Essential providing some great insight on how the MLS operates.

The Members Tables

Rdowy08’s latest table focuses on form midfielders. Based on their last four appearances this table has a number of minimum criteria to ensure only the best options are included.

My assist imminent table also focuses on midfielders, this time those who have been racking up a high number of chances that hopefully will be converted into points in the coming Gameweeks.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Leagues

The Harry Kane factor proved decisive in our community leagues during Gameweek 20. Greenwindmill was one of those who owned and started the Tottenham striker and takes a commanding 27-point lead in the FFScout moderators and contributors league as a result. Ciaran Lamont, the new leader of the Puffinboy Memorial Cup was another to ensure Kane was in his starting XI, as did Dan Clark, who retains top spot in the FFS Dead Zone league.

Sarnab Das may have benched Kane, but his tally of 47 in Gameweek 20 was still enough to maintain his lead in the “Long and Winding Road” main league.

Mark Schwarzer joined Leicester on a free transfer from Chelsea.. Kasper Schmeichel is out injured.

good FPL option? or stay away from Foxes?

Hamer will keep starting until Kasper is back.

Schwarzer is third choice and will mentor/coach, I think.

Your main priority is to get Yaya out. Simple as. Having a player of that price on the bench for even one week is stupid, you can literally bring in anyone. I'd get in Di Maria.

Who else is looking at Walcott this week?

He looked dangerous last night and with 7 days before the next game I think he'll be good to start after a 75 min run out yesterday.

STO at home should be fruitful as they're not the defensive unit they once were, plus there's payback to be had for the 3-2 a few weeks ago. And then it's City away, which is a very difficult fixture, I think there will be lots of goals - both teams go for it and City are leaking goals everywhere right now. I know this as a Zaba and Hart owner!

Agreed. Much safer to wait, but it's so satisfying when you get in ahead of the curve.

The runs he makes are brilliant, and with Sanchez and Caz on form he will get plenty of chances imo.

I think the double up makes sense when fixtures are good.

Like many have done with Fabs/Hazard, it can work, and I see Sanchez and Walcott as 2 of the most explosive mids in the game.

I'm looking at this. Fabs vs Costa is the big decision for me, as I think Hazard and a defender makes sense.

With all the cheap options in defence I'm looking at a front 8 of:

              Sanchez, Hazard, Walcott, AJ, Boyd
              Costa, Aguero, Kane

              from GW23 onwards

The problem is that we can't afford to. It's a good job he's a super fit young lad - if he got injured we'd be in all kinds of trouble.

Messrs Walcott, Ramsey, Ozil need to step it up when they are back.

I am managing quite well with Cazorla - you could too.

Also, and you won't like this, Giroud is causing more problems than he is solving.

Yeah, Cazorla has been great the past month or so. Having pens furthers the argument for him also. I have him a close 3rd behind Sanchez and a fully fit Walcott, but all 3 have their merits, imo.

Giroud and Welbeck are ok, but they are not top 4 calibre strikers.

Pretty much every 6 week period that we analyze midfield performances Sanchez seems to be at or near the top with chances/shots/assists. I would say both... But Wally could have a negative effect we shall see

My thinking is could it turn Sanchez into an assist only or an assist of the assister when Giroud and Walcott fit and going

          Walcott Sanchez hazard fab Boyd

But then no room for adm and sterling (not so bothered by latter)

With Giroud's link up play, I'd figure Sachez would have more chances to score goals.

Wally effect less predictable. Can be negative, as he will force Sanchez to play deeper and is not known for his creativity.

Thinking this may be the year of midfield doubles like last year's forward double of Suarez and Sturridge. Hazard and Fabregas and hopefully Sanchez and Walcott. Imagine a midfield of Hazard Fabregas Sanchez and Walcott firing on all cylinders. Jaysus.

Siggy. Against the grain of this forum, I would definitely not bench Downing.

You're having a tough choice here. West Ham's defence has been nothing much to cheer about, but the truth is, the easiest opponent any of these players have this round, must be Swans. Their goal scoring potential, too, is close to 0 now, so I'm not particularly afraid that Siggy would get many assists when there's nobody to score goals.

I do understand your decision to bench Roo, though. Southampton may well restrict them to 0 decent chances. But it's at home and Roo is on pens.

I have no problem in occasionally benching an expensive player, but let me explain this price concept to you a bit: you have put a lot of your team value to Roo, and if you have to consider benching him at home against a team that is not Chelsea, when your other players are not having crazy good fixtures either, you could possibly find better value for your investment elsewhere, i.e. downgrading him to a striker you would trust equally, but who costs you 3m less, and then upgrade Siggy to someone who plays in a team that has an attack.

      1. Holmes
        • 10 Years

Thanks mate! Is Rooney really on penos? Thought its RvP... If he is, then not an option to bench. While picking a player for bench, I consider two points for shortlisting:
        1) Player isn't on penos.
        2) Tough fixtures.

    Thoughts on this back 7?

    Panti Heaton
    Terry Clyne Bertrand Wisdom Chester

You may think I'm silly to double up on saints defenders because their fixtures aren't amazing, but Wisdom and Chester have fantastic fixtures to cover when necessary.

Also I just love Clyne and Bertie as a slightly biased Saints fan.

To clarify, I'm talking about a wildcard defence. If you were wildcarding do you think I should have anyone else in there?

I realise ManU have great fix but don't think I can justify getting someone like Jones in over Bertrand

Agree, but United attacking cover is essential for their run of fixtures, but this is about defence anyway. To have Clyne, Bertrand and Terry would be to detract from your front 8 though, so maybe choose between either Bertrand or Clyne and transfer out the other for Van Aanholt maybe?

Keep Benteke for one more week. Get rid of Lambert immediately for Kane, or Austin, but preferrably Kane. Otherwise your team isn't even that bad, just use FT's to get rid of Lambert and Coleman. I would wait a week or two more until you wildcard, the later the better.

Wildcard do you set it up around 3-4-3 or is 3-5-2 viable?

    Hazard Fab ADM Walcott Sanchez
    Aguero Kane xxx

Then always go with big hitting midfield?

i think to be flexible and play both systems is the way to go

i plan to get all those u mentioned bar theo and have silva instead and maybe giroud as 3rd forward

But then how do you afford all those and a defence! 🙂

I always try to go 3-4-3 as those 3 striker slots are so precious. You can survive with a poor choice for a 5th mid, but in my opinion not with a poor 3rd striker.

Morning gents! What would you do with this lot:

    Guzan
    Hutton, Zabaleta, Terry
    Sanchez, Hazard, Downing, Siggy
    Rooney, Austin, Costa

subs: Gilks, Boyd, Naylor, Chester --- 2 FT's, 2.2 ITB

    A) Rooney/Austin -> Kane
    B) Siggy -> Sterling/Coutinho/Chadli/Eriksen
    C) Downing -> Sterling/Coutinho/Chadli/Eriksen
    D) Gilks -> Foster
