The Weekend Team News

Arsene Wenger rules out Mathieu Debuchy for three months. Kieran Trippier is expected to shake off a hamstring problem for Burnley. Erik Pieters remains a doubt for Stoke, James McArthur has been passed fit for Palace, whilst Raheem Sterling is set to return for Liverpool this weekend.

Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Mathieu Debuchy will be sidelined for up to three months after undergoing surgery on his dislocated shoulder. Mikel Arteta will also be out of action for three months, having successfully undergone ankle surgery. Elsewhere, Wenger has ruled out Danny Welbeck for the Etihad clash, while Kieran Gibbs will be monitored after returning to training later today.

Kieran Tripper was withdrawn with a tight hamstring in Wednesday evening’s cup tie against Spurs Sean Dyche alleviated any concerns by suggesting that the defender should be fit for the weekend. The Clarets are hopeful on club captain Jason Shackell, who missed the cup defeat to Spurs with a calf complaint.

Nigel Pearson could again be without Esteban Cambiasso for the visit of Stoke, with the midfielder yet to fully train following injury. Danny Drinkwater is in contention for the weekend, while Pearson has suggested that fellow midfielder Dean Hammond is a “unlikely to be available” for the Potters clash. The Foxes boss is also hopeful that the paperwork will be completed in time to allow new signing Andrej Kramaric to figure at the weekend.

Gaston Ramirez and Sone Aluko are both set to train today ahead of Hull’s trip to Upton Park. Steve Bruce is set for a reshuffle up front, though, with Nikica Jelavic and Abel Hernandez both ruled out for up to six weeks.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Raheem Sterling is available for selection once again, following the youngster’s short mid-season break. Rodgers has also gone on to reveal that Adam Lallana is ahead of schedule on his comeback from a thigh problem and will be monitored along with Steven Gerrard and Glen Johnson. Daniel Sturridge though, remains sidelined for the Aston Villa trip.

Mark Hughes is optimistic that Steven Nzonzi will be fit to face Leicester, though the Potters boss is sweating on the fitness of Erik Pieters, after the pair were withdrawn at the break in the loss to Arsenal. Furthermore, Victor Moses returned to the squad against the Gunners after recovering from injury, and Hughes has suggested that the winger now “looks sharp and is ready to go.”

Joe Cole could be set to miss the meeting with ex-club Liverpool at the weekend, after picking up a hamstring injury at Leicester. In more positive news, Nathan Baker is expected to return to the squad after injury, with Villa also welcoming back Fabian Delph from suspension.

Ahead of Palace’s trip to Burnley, Alan Pardew has revealed that James McArthur has recovered from the foot problem that forced him off in the win over Spurs last week.

Winston Reid and Guy Demel have both returned to light training and “have a chance” of making Sunday’s home clash with Hull, according to Sam Allardyce earlier this morning.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter Stream as breaking news unfolds.

My current WC team. Would you change anything?

    Foster Myhill
Terry Bertrand Wisdom Van Aanholt Wasilewski
    Sanchez Hazard Silva Downing Boyd
    Aguero Costa Kane

    0.0 in the bank

I'm considering Sterling and Puncheon in place of Silva and Downing. Then upgrading van Aanholt. Good idea?
    Cheers!

I genuinely don't know anymore! I think I have WC blindness, the equivalent of snow blindness.

    Foster (Myhill)
CLYNE - Fonte - TERRY (Aanholt, Wasilewski)
    Hazard - PUNCHEON - Di Maria - Sanchez (Ward-Prowse)
    Aguero - COSTA - Kane

    Foster (Myhill)
    BAINES - Fonte - F.LUIS (Aanholt, Wasilewski)
    Hazard - PUNCHEON - Di Maria - Sanchez (Ward-Prowse)
    Aguero - COSTA - Kane

    Foster (Myhill)
    CLYNE - Fonte - F.LUIS (Aanholt, Wasilewski)
    Hazard - FABREGAS - Di Maria - Sanchez (Ward-Prowse)
    Aguero - GIROUD - Kane

    a) Clyne, Terry, Puncheon, Costa
    b) Baines, F.Luis, Puncheon, Costa
    c) Clyne, F.Luis, Fabregas, Giroud

I don't like the double WBA GKs.
I think double Soton could be problematic the way they're picking up injuries, especially Schneiderlen.
Why Luis? do you expect Azpilicueta to be out for a while?

      I'd consider Phil Jones

      1. Twisted Saltergater

I fancy Chelsea to get a CS vs Swansea and F.Luis has a chance to impress now. An easy escape plan would be Chambers perhaps.

I'm tempted by B as I'd have Baines vs West Brom and 1 Southampton, then can see how solid they look with those injuries. Gardos could come in for F.Luis. Or Baines to Terry.

        1. Scratch

          9 years, 4 months ago

Yeah B is probably marginally the best looking version. I've something not disimilar to yours in

          Foster / Krul
          PVA, Waz, Jones, Wisdom, Gardos
Alexis, Hazard, Chadli, Di Maria/Cesc, Ward Prowse
          Aguero, Costa, Kane

My main issue is Fabregas and Costa who i've had all season bought as 9m / 10.5m. I'd like to keep Fabregas and sell Costa but trouble is my rival has 80 points on me and has Fabregas but no Costa. Really stuck

Ok, is Costa(c) + Puncheon (who I rate over the next 4) better than Giroud + Fabregas? Giroud up against Villa and Leicester in the next 4 and I think Fabregas will be pushed up behind Costa for the next 2.

      Really tricky.

Hmm a lot of people seem to overstate the ability of Arsenals defence. Chambers and Mertesacher are mistakes waiting to happen. Once City get a goal Wenger will resort to his kitchen sink strategy and end up going further behind. I'm not saying this can't be a tight game but the only way it will be is if City decide to make it one as opposed to Arsenal holding firm.

Arsenal will concede against City. That's a certainty surely.

Long term though Arsenal's defence will do well against weaker teams.

Couldn't agree more. An Arsenal fan here.

He had a great season last year, surprisingly, as he has been a liability since we signed him. Wenger definitely needs to sign a replacement to play alongside Kosc.

He tries to play some ridiculous balls out from the back at times (all Arsenal players are guilty of this) and when it doesn't pay off he has no pace to rectify the situation. You'd think he would use his experience to help lift the team and lead by example.

You don't give up. I was 100 points behind a rival few years back throughout I still thought I could catch him. It just takes one captain pick to score a hattrick or a massive double game week and suddenly 100 becomes 50 etc

    Captain picking strategies:

How do you guys usually go about picking your captain?

    1) Ignore the crowd and go for who you think will score the most points?
    2) Captain the most popular pick of the week so as to make sure you don't fall behind?
    3) Make sure you pick a differential captain in order to climb up the rankings?
    4) Stats? Fixtures? Form?

Weirdly enough, I've found that my mentality behind my captain pick has changed quite a bit since my ranks improved.
I used to captain the popular high % pick previously in order to stay with the pack but now that I'm in the top 1k, I've been trying to go for a differential in hopes of moving up even more.

ADM (C) and Puncheon (VC) for me this week. Life is a gamble eh?

Err.. Actually, there is. Sometimes it's just too risky to not follow the crowd. The risk is not worth the reward then.

I usually follow the crowd if I'm doubting. Sometimes I go for a differential pick, if the risk isn't too high. It's the best approach imo.
