Injuries

The Treatment Table – FA Cup Fourth Round

With rest and rotation rife, the number of new injuries has been fairly minimal over Saturday and Sunday’s fixtures so far:

Aston Villa
Leandro Bacuna was subbed off due to injury on 88 minutes as Paul Lambert’s side got the better of Bournemouth yesterday. The Villa boss revealed Fabian Delph missed out through injury but is optimistic the midfielder – along with Gabby Agbonlahor – will be fit for next Sunday’s trip to Arsenal:

Fabian pulled up yesterday. He had a little bit of an achilles problem. Gabby was the same with his hamstring. Hopefully those two will be back next week.”

Chelsea
Andre Schurrle was omitted from the Blues squad to face Bradford with a back problem, Jose Mourinho has confirmed. John Obi Mikel was subbed off midway through the second period after sustaining a head knock.

Leicester
Liam Moore lasted just 25 minutes of Saturday’s cup win at Spurs before being withdrawn with an ankle injury, according to the club’s official website.

Foxes boss Nigel Pearson rolled out an update earlier this afternoon:

“It’s an ankle problem. We’ll see [how long he’s out for]. It was a bit unfortunate for him. I think he did it in a block that he made initially and Liam is disappointed too because he gave away the penalty. He has had to be patient for his chance to get back into the side, and I feel for him that he wasn’t able to get a full performance in.”

Man City
Eliaquim Mangala missed City’s shock home loss to Middlesbrough due to a groin problem, Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed.

Man United
Chris Smalling missed Friday evening’s goalless draw against Cambridge after picking up a knock in training.

Southampton
Shane Long could be set for a stint on the sidelines for the Saints. The forward lasted just 12 minutes as a substitute during Saturday’s loss to Palace before being forced off with a rib injury. After the match, Ronald Koeman admitted he fears the worst:

“I spoke to the doctor and he thought he will have fractured one or two ribs and that’s very painful. It’s a pity because we don’t have that number of players to go with all the injuries that we have. I don’t know (how long he will be out for). Normally three, four, five weeks.”

West Brom
Stephane Sessegnon was withdrawn on 67 minutes of the Baggies 2-1 win over Midlands neighbours Birmingham. The Benin international was the victim of a tough challenge from the hosts’ Paul Robinson and, unable to continue, was replaced by Chris Baird.

Boaz Myhill was handed a rare chance to impress between the posts by Tony Pulis at St Andrews but the keeper was forced off with an injured finger as his manager went on to say:

“He will need an X-ray to see if it’s dislocated. He will need some stitches.”

Weekend Suspensions

Gylfi Sigurdsson’s moment of madness towards the end of Swansea’s cup loss at Blackburn has proven costly. The playmaker is now set to miss the next three Gameweeks (sou, SUN, wba), with reports today confirming that Garry Monk won’t be appealing the decision.

The Swans are also without Kyle Bartley for their weekend trip to St Mary’s after he was dismissed for denying a goalscoring opportunity at Ewood Park, whilst Sunderland’s Jack Rodwell will miss Saturday’s home clash with Burnley – the midfielder collected two yellow cards during the weekend goalless draw against Fulham.

I think before the game started he was just rested, after they both scored, I think it changed things little.

Nah. Cazorla has been controlling the midfield recently. They still need that regardless of whos on the wings. Rosisky basically did that job yesterday for Caz.

Oil would be more of a rival for him. I'm not just talking about this week, obviously I want Cazorla of a while.
I hope you are right though.

Ozil was on the wing yesterday though I believe. Think Wenger is toying with Ozil on the wing to keep Caz central. But that's just an assumption, can't say anything for sure!

Of course they all flow and switch around in the front 4 so it doesn't necessarily matter what position they technically are put in though

They will both play, but Ozil might diminish Santi as a fantasy pick somewhat.

If Ozil and Cazorla play, that will leave Sanchez either upfront or on the right, where he has shown, he is not at his best.

Alexis on the left, Ozil on the right, Cazorla in the middle.
But that's all pretty notional as in practice they'd switch every 10-15 minutes.

They might all prosper, but with Chamberlain, Rosicky, Welbeck and Walcott all knocking on the door for the same spots, they're all going to lose minutes at some stage.

This. An overrated Flash Harry, injury prone, reluctant to play when he has a knock and will be nowhere as good without Suarez taking opposing defenders' attentions away.

Liverpool are priced as a Champions League team when in reality they are a mediocre outfit competing for 5th to 7th place.

Why the love for Boyd? In the event that a mid doesn't play, I'll have a defender to cover their place so the 5th mid is not necessary. Oscar is a great differential pick and almost has the same points per minute as Costa! Cazorla's on fire atm so he's in with Arsenal's juicy fixtures coming up.

        1. GoRedz

          Fine, fine. But:
          - Arsene has other options now, he proved it this weekend.
          - Oscar just doesn't play some games, and it was not only sue to injuries. And that's a big difference for me, compared to Hazard, especially if you have a non-playing 5th mid.
          - Boyd is great value, absolutely nailed on, scores from time to time. What else would you want from your first sub ?

That being said, go with your guts.
My guts say something different that's all.

Thanks for the reply. Good points to consider.

I can see Arsene giving Ozil/Walcott more pitch time but he would be stupid to drop Cazorla entirely!
Oscar's game time is covered in a recent article I wrote. With no FA cup to deal with, he may even play more in the PL! He has better point's per minute than Hazard and is on direct FK's. One to consider.
Boyd doesn't get attacking points every time. With a defender covering your absent mid, you could get a cleansheet which is great!

B, although Giroud to Kane would give you more money for your 4.4 mid and defence

That is true Limpar. It could be close as Chelsea will try to tighten up but other top teams will go all out against them so perhaps there won't be many clean sheets who knows. Option C includes a chelsea defender at the expensive of Hazard and looks decent.

      like the look of C.

but would be a bit worried with a 4.2 mid - maybe downgrade Silver to get in Boyd/JWP?

I like the idea of A but with a few tweaks.

Cazorla is a good pick short term but in 2 or 3 weeks with CL returning and Walcott/Ozil gaining match fitness he'll start to get rotated. I'd consider downgrading for someone like Chadli.

That money could be used to get a playing 2nd GK (Krul), a playing 3rd striker (Sanogo or Ayoze) and a safer WBA defender )Wisdom/Lescott).

    Foster // Myhill
    Fonte // Bellerin // Naughton // PVA // Baird
    Sanchez // Hazard // ADM // Cazorla // Lucas
    Aguero // Costa // Kane

    0.2 ITB

I was away and missed the FA cup games though, what are thoughts on this team after the weekend's games? Defense too risky? ADM bad pick despite the fixtures?

Walters played as a striker though, which i don't think will happen very often once Diouf is back. Bojan seems nailed in the hole and one of Moses/Walters/Arnautovic will have to drop to the bench imo.

Agree, but for now it looks like:

      Ozil - Cazorla - Sanchez

With Walcott on the bench, perhaps coming in for Ozil (and so Sanchez switching flanks). Walcott and Ozil may eventually displace Cazorla, but its not going to happen yet.

        Pretty much this.

Adding extra confusion/risk is the fact Welbeck and Chamberlain both deserve prem starts when fit - and their workrate will suit certain fixtures.
Could mean one of Ozil/Cazorla rested in physical away games for example.

They'll get gametime off the bench, and Welbeck can ease the load on Giroud up top. Of course, whilst they're still in three competitions, we're probably wrong to talk about there being such a thing as a 'first choice' XI - Wenger will play it game by game, and we probably should too.

Must take into consideration this is the first time Arsene has hit this many of his attacking stars all fit in the last couple years, so there will be rotation and rest and players dropped if they aren't performing well enough.

      I don't know.

I do like it as it a little bit different.

I would prefer Foster/Pantilimon as the keepers.

I would then upgrade Jones and Fonte to Clyne and Bertrand. They both have attacking threat.

Tripling up on Arsenal is risky but could work.

With the transfers I have said, do you have the money for an potential escape route of Cazorla and Giroud to Puncheon and Aguero?

The Arsenal attack has become a minefield. For me in terms of nailed-on-ness (when fit) it is currently as follows:

    Tier 1: Giroud/Sanchez
    Tier 2: Ozil/Ramsey/Cazorla
    Tier 3: Walcott/Chamberlain/Welbeck/Rosicky

That's in order, so Ozil most likely to become Tier 1, Cazorla most likely to drop a tier.

What that means in terms of actual minutes is up for grabs; and of course, a whole tier might get wiped by small muscular injuries any minute so...

    1. CFC1990
      • 12 Years

Interesting way to look at it.

Walcott will play most games when fully match fit in my opinion.

Pretty much agree. I don't think Caz will drop down the pecking order though. Playing incredible football at the moment. Wenger won't drop him unless he starts playing poorly. Has even said at this stage in his career he's more effective centrally so I think he really wants to get the best out of him.

He won't be 'dropped', no, but he is at more risk of rotation I would say, than the other 4 in front of him there. I think people underestimate how central Ozil is in AW's plans.

I agree, but Ozil needs to consistently prove himself. I think Arsene has the luxury to drop underperforming players now so he needs to give it 100% every game

Well my post below can just be ignored now.
I would say Giroud still needs to start as the one CF in their team, Sanchez can play else where.
Ozil needs form and confidence otherwise he brings the team down, so may be rotated.
Ramsey should always play. The rest I'm baffled about.
The full backs are tough too.

      Hot topic of the day!

I think that's probably right. Ozil/Wally up in the air though. Ox could still get the start

That's it barring injuries I think.
(Though Ozil/Sanchez could be switched - I hope. Ozil cutting in onto his left is a lot better than from the right.)

how good are Ozil and Sanchez off the right? I don't think either are at their best in that position but is there anything to back that up in terms of stats?

Ozil could play from the right and Sanchez from the left.

They are not as good, although the stronger of the 2 would easily be Sanchez as he used to be a winger.

would love to see this, but I think Ox will start, with Ozil and Walcott benched

No a huge fan of Sterling, would prefer Cazorla. Rest looks good.

Bellerin & Baird aren't nailed on, Downing's fixtures have turned. Who's your 5th mid?

@ Double Saints defence fans -

Did shipping 3 goals to Chamakh and Sanogo give you pause for thought?
