Scout Report – Callum McManaman

Tony Pulis made his first foray into the transfer market as manager of West Brom by acquiring Callum McManaman from Wigan. Arriving at the Hawthorns on a three-and-a-half year contract, the 23-year-old winger admitted the lure of the English top flight was too good to turn down:

“I’m really made up to have joined. When the chance came to move to West Bromwich Albion, and return to the Premier League, I couldn’t turn it down. This is a great move for me and I hope the Albion fans will get to see the best of me. Albion are a great club, with a good tradition. I can’t wait to get going.”

His new manager was also delighted with the deal. After chasing the wide man’s signature for a number of days, Pulis took to the West Brom website to talk up his prospects:

“I’m delighted we’ve got Callum and I believe he will be an exciting addition to our numbers. Callum is a player who can improve our options and I am really looking forward to working with him.”

The History

The Merseyside-born McManaman started his youth career at Everton but after eight years at the Goodison club, was released back in 2006 and signed for the Latics following year.

After a couple of seasons in the reserves under Roberto Martinez, McManaman became Wigan’s youngest ever player to feature in the top flight after earning his league debut in May 2009. The then-Latics boss was somewhat cautious with the winger’s pitch time, though, and McManaman played just 11 times across all competitions over the following three seasons, supplying two goals and a pair of assists for the DW club. A three-month loan deal at Blackpool in 2011/12 produced two goals in 14 appearances before he returned to his parent club in time for the following campaign.

It’s fair to say that McManaman has struggled for consistency in the final third, though. The highlight of his time at Wigan was a man-of-the-match display in the 2013 FA Cup Final, where he helped clinch a shock win over Manchester City, but aside from that, his displays have been erratic. Over a total of 109 appearances across all competitions, he mustered 17 goals and eight assists, with five strikes in 23 Championship matches this season proving his most prolific. The Baggies new boy has made four appearances for the England Under-20 side but is yet to manage the step up to senior level.

The Prospects

Having started with the predominantly left-footed Chris Brunt on the Baggies right in both of his league matches in charge, Pulis is now clearly determined to add more width to his side’s play to stretch opposition backlines. McManaman’s pace and trickery on the ball certainly adds a new dimension to the Midlands side and it seems likely he’ll be handed the position on the right, though he’s versatile enough to be fielded as an inverted winger out left.

As we’ve witnessed already, Pulis isn’t afraid to alter his tactics in accordance with opponent. At home to Hull on his debut at the helm, he rolled out a 4-4-2 with Saido Berahino alongside Brown Ideye up top, but despite netting his side’s winner, the former was moved to the left flank away to Everton the following Gameweek as Pulis moved to 4-5-1. With more options out wide, though, it remains to be seen whether the Baggies boss will continue to utilise Berahino on the flank for road trips, though the youngster’s lack of physical presence suggests he’s not as well equipped to lead the line as a lone striker compared to the more robust Ideye or Victor Anichebe.

Certainly, Pulis’ record so far – one goal and two clean sheets in two matches – suggests that, as we’d anticipated, West Brom’s defence may be the safest option for those looking to invest in the Hawthorns side. Given that Chris Baird dropped out of the starting XI for the weekend cup win at Birmingham, Andre Wisdom remains the backline option of choice for many and it may well be that with a natural right winger in front of him now, putting defenders on the back foot and creating space behind, he’ll will be afforded greater freedom to forage forward and support more attacks in the opponents’ half.

Likely to come in at no more than 5.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, McManaman has showdowns against Burnley, Swansea, Sunderland and Villa in the next six to cement a starting role in the Baggies XI and given that no other West Brom midfielder has scored more than once this season, the new boy certainly has the chance to stake a claim. With the “Pulis effect” already taking effect at the back, though, and the likes of Jason Puncheon, Adam Johnson, Victor Moses and Eljero Elia all vying for our attentions in the budget midfield bracket, McManaman will need to up his game in order to become a genuine contender for our 15-man squads.

How can you claim that was an accident? Even if hes not a nasty player, that challenge was clearly way over the line. I dont care if you havent killed someone before, if you shoot someone dead one time, youre still a murderer.

Have had Eriksen thrice already this season. The player I've shipped in and out the most so far. And as you understand, missed a lot of his hauls in the process.

Well, could I be a fourth time lucky and go for him ahead of Oscar/Sterling? But then again, with Bojan out, Kane is the best 3rd striker, and you don't really want to double up on Spurs ...

Eriksen's is one of those players that you have to either keep or ship for the long run as his pts are very hard to predict. Just make a decision and stick by it.

This. Ive had Eriksen quite some time, hes the kind of player that you should rely on for the long run, but i never have enough faith in his concistency to ever captain him. Ill just take the semi-odd game winning goal and baps and be happy with it. Hes even quite the differential, and regardless of whoever is Spurs`s flavour of the month, hes always around, creating stuff.

The way Guardiola's Barca played football was a pleasure that no football fan can deny.

To put it down to inherited players which no manager before or since has got that level out of is extremely foolish.

Not going anywhere near him for GOAT but discarding him as massively overrated is ridiculous IMO.

And again, it's not ridiculous. He has made Bayern worse since joining. His Barca team was a perfect storm. The jury is still very much out on him yet you'd think he's the second coming according to most.

I wouldnt go as far as to say hes massively underrated, regardless of whatever squad you inherit, its still an accomplishment to keep on winning. Many will say that to keep on winning is even harder than winning in the first place, if im making sense. That said, i dont think hes at all close to "best manager in xxx" status. And im not so sure i agree about the running away when things get tough, i think its completely fine to leave if youre tired/having personal problems. If that happens to coincide with your team winning recently, so be it. Im a proponent of critisizm, but not unwarrented ones.

            This.

Guardiola and Mourinho only enter the argument if you believe football began in 1992.

Mourinho won titles everywhere he went. He made Chelsea a European powerhouse. Don't tell me it is the money. Ranieri failed before him with much more spending. City still can't make it in Europe after so many years. He won the Uefa Cup and CL with Porto. He won the CL with Inter. 2 teams that had zero chance if it wasn't for his genius. Madrid were constantly knocked out at the round of 16 before him. Ancelotti is reaping the rewards of Mourinho's work. Mou is definitely in the top 3.

Guardiola is without doubt a great coach but is he a manager? What we are comparing him to is people who managed a whole clubs from playing style to transfers to contract negotiations to organising transport to and from games (I'm sure even back then they would have had pa's to do a lot of the nitty gritty but the point is they oversaw it all back then). Would Pep have excelled to the same degree if thrown in and asked to do all that these legends did? I'm not so sure and I think of the modern coaches maybe Jose Mourinho is probably the only one that might have been able to manage it.

Even as a coach there are question marks as to whether Pep is in the top 3 possibly even top 10 in the world ever. He has a long way to go before he can prove his naysayers wrong imo

There is no comparison for Clough in football. He did it at Derby and Nottingham Forest, FFS. And if that's your argument then Matt Busby is your man, not Shankly.

I love Clough to bits mate and I consider him the GOAT so no argument from me on that front.

I'd have a hard time separating Busby for Shankly though, maybe just that I grew up with great Liverpool teams of the 70's and 80's and knew that was Shanks's legacy.

That's the joy of these discussions though, we can all make a good case for our favourites.

If it's British football the only managers that could compare to Clough are Jock Stein and Alex Ferguson as far as I can see.

What jock stein did was reinvent football by getting his team to play an attacking style that was not even thought possible up to that point. He did all this with a bunch of likely lads born within spitting distance of the club's stadium. The man was a true genius and a pioneer that everyone who loves the beautiful game owes a hell of a lot too.

All born within 20 miles of the stadium if I remember right. That was what I had in mind when I put him with Ferguson and Clough. All three built teams from local players (I'm thinking of Ferguson at Aberdeen) and had great success with them.

The days when Liverpool ruled the world.

However, Paisley pretty much inherited Shankly's team like Dalglish then went on to inherit Paisley's.

I think in those days it was more just a progressive handing of the baton that Liverpool did really well, but Shankly started it all off and Liverpool turned it into a well oiled machine that successive managers could come into and succeed straight away.

My point was more aimed at Paisley than Shankly.

I think Shankly basically made the empire. Paisley inherited it but I never really figured he was the same kind of genius as say a Clough or a Shanks or a Busby.

            Just my opinion.

Because winning in Europe means hate in England. English fans can't comprehend european football. A world built on talent & technique, rather than positioning and intelligence.

How many above have bashed Pep's Barca as "boring"? Or are currently bashing LVG playing a non-english formation.

Second, Fergie was smart enough to know his strengths. He brought in Carlos Queiroz to try and make Utd competitive in Europe by adapting to their style...but when Carlos left a few years later, they reverted back to their older playstyle (again, probably a very shrewd call).

Much like England in the world cup, on paper you see a great team. In practice they get outplayed by "boring" football.

"A world built on" doesn't seem clear re-reading.

England is the world built on technique, and Europe intelligence.

So he was shrewd to bring in Carlos and move away from dinosaur football but he was also shrewd to go back to dinosaur football instead of seeking an up and coming young coach with new ideas to keep the club progressing.

One of the main reasons Utd are in their current mess is because SAF didn't retire when the club were in the ascendancy imo. He probably should have went when Queiroz left as that would have left a club with a cracking bunch of footballers who were able to play a modern way and who the next manager would be able to keep at the top. Instead he left a bunch of smallings, ashley youngs and valencia's who only know 4-4-2 and don't have the skill to adapt to anything different.

I seriously hope Utd have another 160m to spend next summer as it will take that and more before they are challenging for titles again imo.

The first choice was the best for the club, the second choice was best for fergie 😉
(like most great managers his ego isn't small!)

But he knew he didn't have the knowledge to continue without Carlos.

He always had good right hand men beside him. His genius was in managing not coaching. would he even be in the top 10 modern managers when it comes to coaching or tactics? I'd argue not and this is one of the reasons it makes it so hard to compare brittish managers with continental ones imo

Sorry, that's just wrong. Don't want to turn this into a Utd Vs Liverpool thing. BUT. Paisley won 6 leagues, 3 European Cups, 3 league cups in 9 years.
If he had taken over Liverpool at the same age as Fergie took over United his record would be even better than Fergie's.
As far as Euopean success is concerned, Paisley trumps Fergie And it only took him a quarter of the time.
I still rate Alex higher as his motivational skills were unparalleled but to call Paisley...meh...is just so wrong.

Difficult question, some very good managers have won nothing. It's easy to list those who have a cupboard full of trophies through good management and a big wallet..but sometimes those with not much money, and keeping a club afloat, do an equally good job at the opposite end.

          Mad isn't it? Quality manager.

It is hard to judge "managers" from abroad as a lot of the time they are just coaches and as such you are not comparing apples with apples and this is without going near the strength of the leagues they operated in.

Tbf saf is uniquely qualified to have an opinion on l those being considered due to his age and experience.

I have saf ahead of stein just about and Busby ahead of both of them but I really only have the knowledge gained from reading about coaches from this era to go on.

Even clough is before my time but I wouldn't put what he achieved back then as being the same as Steve Bruce doing it with say Hull now as the game has changed so much now due to the finances and professionalism involved. Maybe the likes of big s could have been a clough if born in a different era?

Ignorant is a bit harsh. In my original post I mentioned "if we're discussing UK managers only".

I'd happily discuss other managers from around the world but my knowledge doesn't extend to South America etc.

This is a UK based site and I think people happily joined in the debate and it created a great sticky.

Feel free to create your own discussion, or even better express your opinion in a more positive manner. Otherwise, your own post just looks a bit isolated. And a bit narky too.

Mentioned above my top 5/6 and been trying to think of great non - British managers and I'm struggling a bit at the moment to name many in the same league as Fergie, Stein, Shanks but Rinus Michels comes to mind as the the Father of the great Dutch era of the 70's but whether he was there at the right time or he was the instigator I'm not so sure - I'm sure Dino will know. 😉

Just seen this post GNU. As much as I'd love to say I know the answer I'd only be guessing too. Afaik it was Michels who instigated the dutch revolution but as I wasn't even born then I'm going on fragments of memory meshed together which could be giving me complete wrong answer.

As far as foreign managers go Lippi and Trappatoni and possibly Cappello and Guus Hiddink would have to be up there but again these are all more head coaches than managers as we'd know them to be.

Lippi is very underrated imo, that Juve team he built in the mid/late 90's was epic. Could he do it now though with the Italian league being so weak? Lippi will always suffer from the same thing Pep Guardiola will when compared to their peers unless they do something remarkable with a smaller team.

Jose Mourinho getting Porto Uefa and Champions league winners medals was his best achievement yet he has went on to win Leagues in three other countries also. When you compare Pep and Lippi to these kind of achievements I think they are found wanting. If Jose goes on to win more Champions league he could be the one to go down as the best of all time (and possibly the most unpopular too 😉 )

      David Moyes.

100% win record against Barca and Real, two of the top teams of modern football history. A truly great manager who'll definitely come back to manage Man United later in his career.

Because he's the manager United deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So, we'll hunt him, because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian. A watchful protector. A Dark Knight.

I have no idea what youre referring to. In any case, yes, ofcourse he is a good player. Possibly even a great one, or atleast he has the ability to become one under Mourinho`s guidance. But hes a childish, petty person on the pitch. In that regard he reminds me a lot of Suarez, and i guess the feeling im stuck with now is what non-LFC fans felt last season.

OK chaps, here's me "Post-Costa" WC - new players in CAPS.

    PANTS/Foster
    JONES/BAIRD/BERTRAND/BELLERIN/Terry
    ADM/WALTERS/Sanchez/Hazard/Boyd
    KUN/GIROUD/Kane

    0.2 itb.

Bellerin is an ok punt because 1) I think he'll play and clinch the position 2) He won't even start for me most of the time with my Jones/Terry/Berty combo so if he doesn't win right back, he's easily shipped out later. I also don't like the other defenders in this price range (4.6 or lower).

Walters should definitely be the main beneficiary of Bojan's injury and he's produced in the past when put on display. I'm not convinced by the likes of Puncheon, Chadli (plus, I have Kane - dont want the double up) and the others in this bracket. I like Elia, but everyone seems to think Mane will take his place upon return.

Giroud is the perfect Costa replacement for me imo.
