Captain Sensible – Gameweek 26

Our pre-Gameweek members article which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Eden Hazard (26%) leads the way in a closely-contested race this week. The Belgian has managed just two assists in his last four at Stamford Bridge but will fancy his chances of returning to form – visitors Burnley have conceded at least two goals in each of their last six road trips. With that in mind, it’s perhaps surprising that only 17% have opted for Diego Costa – the Spain international has found the net in eight of his nine home appearances so far.

Sergio Aguero is just behind Hazard on 25%. The City striker ended his goal drought with a brace against Stoke last time out and is expected to recover from a minor back problem to welcome Newcastle to the Etihad. With Yaya Toure back on board and Samir Nasri and David Silva both in form, the Argentine will be looking to improve upon a surprisingly poor home record – Aguero has found the net in just three of nine outings in front of his own fans.

Despite serving up five double-figure hauls in the last eight, Harry Kane is backed by only 11% of Fantasy managers as Spurs welcome West Ham to the Lane. Sam Allardyce’s side have managed a single away clean sheet all season and will struggle to keep their hosts at bay, as Mauricio Pochettino’s side look for a morale boost prior to next weekend’s Capital One Cup final against Chelsea.

With that quartet hogging most of the votes, there are a number of differential candidates for those willing to gamble with the armband. Romelu Lukaku is backed by just under 4% at home to a Leicester defence that has shipped at least two goals in eight of their last nine road trips, whilst Arsenal trio Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud have been largely overlooked ahead of a visit to Palace.

    I wish I knew who would score the most;

A: Costa at home to Burnley + blank gw (will have to take PvAs points away to Manu since he is the one I have to field instead of Costa in gw27)

B: Giroud away to CP and at home to Everton

Considering switching Giroud to Costa and leave Hazard, Kane and Costa on the bench for gw27. Will be able to field a fairly decent side in gw27 without a hit.

    Thoughts?

Giroud is bang in form, and Costa is bang out of form. Costa's forte is a string of 5 and 6 pointers, so not worth it IMO.

He certainly will outscore him next week, but to outscore Giroud, Costa will have to be involved in two goals and not get booked. Even then Giroud would only need to score with no baps in both games.

If Costa get's booked as well you'll be worried he get booked again and not actually be a double gameweek player.

There has been some utter bile posted on here about John Terry and Chelsea recently including the comment that "Chelsea's retention of JT as captain amounts to them condoning racism". I don't want to get into an argument that can't be resolved but I want to put the case for the defence on record just once. Let this stand on its own merits. I will refrain from responding to any reply.

The reasons why JT is Chelsea's captain are as follows:

    1. JTs 659 appearances for Chelsea make him the 3rd highest of all time for the club, as an Academy graduate there's no-one that represents Chelsea better
    2. He is, by common consent, the best PL centre half of his generation, only Vidic could realistically be offered as an alternative
    3. He has captained Chelsea to 3 PL titles, 4 FA Cups, 2 League Cups, 1 CL and 1 EL
    4. He has been named UEFA defender of the year 3 times and has been included in the FIFPro World XI 5 times
    5. He is a born leader. England would have done much better with him in the team last summer, had the FA not broken its own rule of presuming that court verdicts are "presumed to be correct"

Yes, he was punished by the FA for racial abuse (having been cleared in a court of law). So was Rio Ferdinand in a related incident. Ferdinand (also a banned drugs cheat) has gone on to be employed by the BBC. Terry is anathematised. There are egregious double standards at play here.

I appreciate that JT is somewhat controversial. But to most Chelsea fans he's simply the greatest captain and one of the greatest players the club has ever had. And if you understood the quality of his relationships with colleagues like Marcel Desailly, Didier Drogba, Ashley Cole and Claude Makelele then you'd understand that a racist is clearly something he is not. He's no saint, obviously. But I don't think saints usually make very good football captains. 😉

I believe John Terry is a deeply unpleasant person, although I accept my view could be wrong since I haven't had personal dealings with him.

I also believe John Terry is excellent at leading a group of other footballers to achieve results.

Finally, I also believe that the 'Chelsea condone racism' comments were mainly down to one poster who loves to WUM/spark heated debates and it's best left ignored most of the time.

Just noticed Walcott is only selected by 1.1%! Pretty tasty differential!

Thought a few more would have him. Especially since he's bagged 2 goals in about 200mins on the field (much of that little 15min runaround cameos where it's hard to do much) since coming back from his injury.

I feel that its inevitable that trekkers will start scoring. I gambled on him over Christmas (it didn't go well).

Not a bad shout. Villa looked so much more dangerous that last second half. Credit has to go to Sherwood for that even though he's a cretin.

As you are far ahead - no need to take a hit. Be conservative and you'll win easy.

Don't take the hit. Bony might not play and Aguero should do pretty well against NEW. Upgrade one of Wisdom/Wasil to a playing def.

What to do with this lot:

    Krul Panti
    Wisdom Terry Clyne PVA Waselski
    Cazorla Walcott Hazard Elia Boyd
    Kane Aguero Sturridge

    1FT 3.2 ITB

    Elia > ??
    or save?

Waselewski to defender that will actually play GW 27, if you do you can save next GW's transfer then plump up on spurs players for GW28.

      Lescott.

Yep, Lescott - also looking more threatening in the box at set pieces since Pulis took over - comes at a price though. Pulis also seems to like Dawson, who has been getting forward quite a bit.

These moves are risks. If you want a big green you got to take them. Most teams are template with a few differentials

Aye, this is true. Will continue to mull it over, in a position where I could theoretically save a FT this week which would be helpful.

I was thinking also doing that exact move.
But i really want to save…
Next week its full of games.. and we have a blank CHE and TOT.

      UCL for City and ARS
UEL for LIV, TOT and EVE

Aye, this is why I'm not entirely sure. In theory I think Wally could even start letting someone else have a rest before the CL game.

    Hazard, sanchez, wally, puncheon, moses,
    Kun, Kane, defoe

With that team I'd have a punt on costa if you can afford it, then change him to a striker for 27 then get austin and eriksen in gw 28
