Scouting the Doubles – Gameweek 34 – Chelsea

Unbeaten since their New Year’s Day mauling at Spurs, Chelsea face one last big test of their title credentials when then travel to Arsenal in the first clash of their double Gameweek 34. Crucially, Jose Mourinho’s men know that wins against the Gunners and Leicester in the next week would bring the title to Stamford Bridge, though the Blues don’y have it easy, with both their upcoming opponents having form on their side.

The Prospects

Since falling to that 5-3 defeat at White Hart Lane, Chelsea have strung together a 12-match unbeaten run, winning nine games and drawing three in the process. Their success has been predicated on a solid defence, with no side conceding fewer goals (seven) than the London club over that period. A largely favourable schedule beyond the double (CRY, LIV, wba, SUN), which includes three home ties, ensures that any prospective investors won’t need to plan an exit route for their new Chelsea recruits.

The Blues head-to-head with Arsene Wenger’s men is shaping up to be a pivotal encounter. Like Jose Mourinho’s side, Arsenal haven’t tasted defeat since they were bested at White Hart Lane, recording victories in all eight of their subsequent league clashes. This exceptional run of form has in part been inspired by Olivier Giroud’s most productive spell at the Gunners, with the French marksman tallying seven goals in as many starts. With Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Aaron Ramsey also in fine form, Chelsea’s rearguard will be keeping tabs on a bevy of threats.

Mourinho’s men then close out their double with a visit to the King Power Stadium, as Nigel Pearson’s troops strive to climb clear of the relegation zone. The Foxes have discovered their scoring touch in the last four Gameweeks, netting more goals (10) than any other side in that period. Furthermore, Leicester have registered clean sheets in two of their previous three home clashes – demonstrating their resolve to beat the drop. That being said, they’ve still shipped seven goals in their last four match-ups, which plays into the hands of the free-scoring Eden Hazard.

The Likely Lads

Only Harry Kane (50%) can lay claim to a higher ownership than Eden Hazard (44%), who’s delivered attacking returns in all but four of his last 17 starts for Chelsea and now sits 31 points clear of his nearest challenger in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. The Belgian winger has tallied more goals (four) than any other midfielder in the last six Gameweeks, with only David Silva and Alexis Sanchez (both nine) managing more attempts on target than the 11.3-priced midfielder over that stretch. To further bolster Hazard’s case for inclusion, he’s also notched three assists in seven and scored in both the reverse fixtures – it’s little wonder, then, that he’s the runaway leader in this week’s Captain Poll.

Cesc Fabregas has contributed to 20 league goals (three goals, 17 assists) in his debut Blues campaign – as compared to Hazard’s 22 (13 goals, nine assists) and Diego Costa’s 22 (19 goals, three assists). After a drop off in form, the Spaniard has rediscovered some consistency and served up a goal and two assists in his last four starts – at 9.4, he offers a midfield double-up option alongside Hazard, with doubts now hovering over all three of the Blues forwards as we head towards the double.

Branislav Ivanovic (7.7) tops the Fantasy Premier League defender rankings with an impressive 160 points – due in no small part to the four goals and five assists he’s tallied this term. Despite not producing any attacking returns in his last four outings, the Serbian right-back has offered the biggest goal threat of any Chelsea defender in the last six Gameweeks, attempting four shots at goal.

John Terry (6.9) offers a cheaper alternative to Ivanovic or double-up defensive option, bearing in mind that the Blues have now chalked up back-to-back clean sheets. Although he possesses an inferior points per game average (4.5) to Ivanovic (5.0), Terry has executed more shots from inside the penalty box (three) than his team-mate (two) in their previous six matches.

The Cheeky Punts

With a points per game average (3.8) well below the other regulars in Chelsea’s back line, Thibaut Courtois doesn’t instantly stand out as an alluring acquisition. Nonetheless, Arsenal haven’t failed to score in any of their encounters at the Emirates this season, which suggests a clean sheet is an unlikely outcome for the visitors. In such an event, the Belgian shot-stopper’ save points could be invaluable – Courtois has earned six save points in the Blues’ last seven. The one concern is that if Chelsea win the title early, Petr Cech could be handed matches over the final four Gameweeks, thus lessening Coutois’ appeal.

Having started each of the last six Gameweeks, Gary Cahill has seen off the challenge of Kurt Zouma and established himself alongside Terry once again. At 6.3, he’s a little more budget-friendly than his skipper and, like Courteous, his first-team place looks secure until the Blues clinch the title at least. Cesar Azpilicueta has earned more bonus bonus (four) in the last two matches than any Chelsea defender but Filipe Luis remains a threat to his pitch time at left-back.

After starting 14 of Chelsea’s first 16 fixtures this campaign, Oscar has played a bit-part role of late, clocking an average of 44 minutes in his last four appearances. In spite of that, a deft assist for Hazard’s goal on the weekend could afford the Brazil international increased minutes in the double, as attempts to build upon impressive haul of six goals and eight assists this season. Mourinho could easily field Ramires on the right against Arsenal in an attempt to stifle Sanchez, though, placing question marks over Oscar’s prospects.

At this point in time, the injury situation up front makes it impossible to recommend any Chelsea striker. Third-choice Didier Drogba has started the last two but the severity of his ankle injury is yet unknown, whilst we really need to wait until Friday lunchtime before Mourinho gives us any sort of inclination as to whether Diego Costa or Loic Remy will be able to play any part in either of the upcoming matches.

To any mods around. It would be a good idea to have a tab of "current FAQ"

I love getting involved in the banter and RMT aspect of the site but sometimes I don't have the time. We all know how repetitive the "any remy updates? What's the latest on silva? When is Costa back?" questions can get.
A little tab to the side with such info as press conferences, injury updates would help the time poor and clean up a bit of the comments too.

    DGW Captains

I wanted to take a look at DGW captain options from a more considered angle than just "who has scored most points in the past". I'm attempting to use interpretation and judgement concerning the intangibles rather than just compiling stats and I can't pretend it will be scientific in the narrow sense. I'd be interested in constructive comments.

The 5 captain options I am looking at are Hazard, Fabregas, Skrtel, Sterling, N'Doye. No Leicester because their attacking options are too much of a lottery - who knows whether Ulloa, Vardy, Kramaric, Nugent or even Mahrez will be the one(s) to score big? But if someone wants to make the case for Vardy I'll be interested to read it.

    1. Skrtel

Liverpool seem to have the best potential of the DGW teams for a double clean sheet with games at WBA and Hull. Skrtel gets an almighty amount of BPs when they do keep clean sheets (22 BPs this season) and also has goal threat from set pieces (7 goals last season). Therefore if you are going to captain a defender he would be the most likely one.

I would estimate Skrtel's likely point range for the week being between 9 and 21 points.

    2. Sterling

I think if you are going to captain a Liverpool midfielder he would appear to be the one, especially as he may be playing upfront. The trouble is that hasn't helped so much before. Sterling hasn't scored twice in the same game all season and only once (GW1) has he even scored and assisted in the same game.

The WBA game is likely to be tight, WBA will be defensively drilled. I think a 0-1, 0-0, 1-0 type game is much more likely than a 0-4 or 1-4. That mitigates against Sterling (but helps Skrtel).

The Hull game could be anything. I suspect Hull will attack (see below) and it could turn into a higher scoring game than the WBA one. That's better for Sterling and less good for Skrtel.

It's very hard to tell but I'd estimate Sterling's likely point range being between 8 and 20 points. That would make him a marginally worse choice than Skrtel. Henderson could also be an option but his estimated point range wouldn't be better.

    3. Hazard and Fabregas

So, what kind of games will Chelsea have? The Arsenal game will probably be tight, Wenger learned his lesson from last season's 6-0 thrashing and now adjusts tactics for top opposition, something he refused to do for years. On the other hand, Arsenal need to win to have an outside chance of catching Chelsea.

For Chelsea, having Remy fit is crucial because they will need his pace to provide threat on the counter attack and keep Arsenal honest at the back. They didn't have that against United and as a result United were able to play an extremely high line and high press. Drogba just doesn't have the legs any more.

In any case, I think it's unlikely Arsenal will roll Chelsea over and unlikely that Chelsea will do anything other than play on the counter. I can't see a lot of goals and that counts against Hazard and Fabregas. Which one is best for this game? Well, Fabregas will certainly play the 10 role. His more advanced position will possibly mean more shots than usual. It will be his first PL game back at Arsenal since leaving. Hazard will be up against Bellerin who is notoriously quick. I just have a feeling that if Chelsea score it could be Fabregas. But I won't attempt to rationalise it.

The Leicester game is easier to predict. Leicester will attack. Chelsea will take a balanced approach. There should be goals but without Costa in the team I never expect Chelsea to score many. 1-3, 2-3, 2-2, 2-1, 0-2, those kind of scores are what it looks like to me.

Leicester's defence (Huth, Morgan, Upson or Wasilewski) are slow and a bit ponderous. It could be a perfect game for Hazard. But by his own admission he is tired. Will he play 90? Will he even start? Probably yes on both counts but I'm not 100% sure.

How to estimate the ranges for these two? Very hard. Fabregas probably between 8 and 15 unless he suddenly starts scoring. But it's not impossible, he scored 15 PL goals for Arsenal in 2009/10 when playing in the 10 role.

Hazard should be more though I don't think many will come against Arsenal. Maybe in the 10 - 25 point range.

    4. N'Doye

I posted some stats about N'Doye earlier today. For total shots, shots in the box and accuracy he is delivering not far short of Giroud's numbers per 90 minutes despite playing for an unfashionable team. He is a top European striker having scored 24 goals in 44 Europa League and Champions League games. He's a bit of a hero at FC Copenhagen and at Shakhtar Donetsk. In other words he is a much better player than most people realise in England.

The crux of the matter is how Hull will now play. Of the 5 relegation-threatened teams, Leicester and QPR are going to attack, that is already visible. Sunderland and Burnley seem more likely to be defensively solid and try to nick wins. What about Hull? What will Bruce do?

I think Hull will see 2 must-win games - Palace (GW34) and Burnley (GW36). If they win them both they are probably safe. I therefore think Hull (who have had 2 weeks to prepare for this game) will go on the attack and if they do that against Palace it could be a goalfest because Palace will certainly do the same. And if Hull score goals it's hard to see N'Doye not being at the heart of it.

The Liverpool game is harder to predict but I think Hull will attack again. They will have nothing to lose, irrespective of what happens against Palace. Liverpool like to press but they don't like to be pressed. And Hull can do that, we saw them do it recently in the 2-3 against Chelsea. There could be goals in this game too.

I won't give a range for N'Doye. He could score as few as 4 points. But I actually think he's a credible outside pick for captain this week and he's the one I will go for if I decide not to captain Hazard. Folly or foresight? I wish I knew. 😉

Too uncertain. You can't be captaining a player with gametime doubt in DGW.

2 games in 4 days after an injury that kept him out of a game where Chelsea desperately wanted him to play? I wouldn't rely on it. I hope it happens though.

I think Remy will probably start both.

It's just that probably isn't enough for a DGW captain option.

It's nice to see some real thought go into DGW (C) options. I think most (myself included) are looking no further than Hazard...but there's a real chance for chasers to get ahead here if he does blank twice.

I think you can consider a Chelsea defender too if you're going to look at Skrtel; though I do agree Pool seem to have the best chance of a double cleansheet. It's just that Ivanovic and Terry have two chances to chip in with attacking returns as well, and it wouldn't be the first time they've done that in a DGW.

Jeez... Swap Terry & Shlupp for Huth & Ivan you have my plan A.
However plans B & C are more appealing going forward are both 4-5-1 which doesn't look sexy but makes more sense.
The other con is no ManC... decision time for me on that one.

No City - well I looked at it, believe me. I so wanted Rooney instead of Aguero.

But City played 4-2-3-1 in the last 2 games. If Pellegrini has learned his lesson on that I think Aguero is a must.

I have nice plans till the end of season with my lot. But maybe you have more budget than me? I was just under 106 before wildcarding and am just under 105 now.

I'm still looking at options, and yes I've a little extra cash started with 107.4 before pressed WC.
I'm considering going with Courtois and looking at that as option for 3rd Chelsea - looks ok but still playing around with options.

Nice post - you make some good points, and clearly enjoy making up somewhat sensible ranges. A few comments :

@1,2 : Why does Sterling's range of 8-20 make him a "marginally worse choice" than Skrtel (range 9-21) ? Are you basing this only off of the max/min ends of the range ? For captaincy, I'd look for something more along the lines of most likely (avg) score, which I'd guess would be higher for Sterling. The worry for Skrtel is that too much hinges on the 'Pool defense avoiding a single defensive error for 180 minutes.. if he loses a CS, he loses 2-3 bps with it.

@3 : I have my doubts about the Arsenal game being tight - they will have to throw everything at Chelsea. If Arsenal open the scoring, we could see an open game and Chelsea might have to quickly change their gameplan. This makes Hazard a strong option IMO, and we're not even talking ownerships now.

@4 : I genuinely don't know enough about Hull / N'Doye to offer any comments.

Finally, I know your post starts with *DGW* captains, but if you were looking for GW34 captains as a whole, and you're not happy with those above - a case could be made for Aguero against an attacking Villa side, and Austin against a listless Hammers side. We would do well to remember that some of these guys (throwing in Kane too) are chasing personal records like highest scorer, are on penalties, focal point of attacking teams and are fighting to get their side into UCL/Europa/avoid relegation - so there is lots of motivation. These 3 will be great differentials this week

At the cost of committing a cardinal DGW sin and captaining a single GWer...

@1 Just on my range assessment. Sterling probably safer though, you are right.

@3 Yes, could be. But Wenger tried throwing everything at Chelsea last season and got hammered 6-0. The 2-0 at City and the 2-1 at United showed a different Arsenal approach in big games. I don't think they will risk getting picked apart on the counter. That's why having Remy fit is so important for Chelsea. They have to have the threat of pace upfront.

@5 Well, I captained Aguero over Kane in GW28. Never again.

Cheers, thought-provoking post overall... breathing life into the captaincy discussion to go with that N'Doye wagon you started earlier 😀 well done!

continuing @5 : Never say never, don't let your GW28 experience color your outlook too much ! I feel like the only real rule of FPL is to be flexible with your ideas. Looking at it as neutrally as I can, I still think if you're chasing and don't want to (c) Haz/Sterling, the next best option is Chaz/Kun/Kane who might all be as selfish as Sturridge for the next few weeks..

RuthNZ, you also get far too worked up about a Fake Football site.

                    > Pity you could bring yourself to comment on something you hadn't read then.

You see your post is much like a *flat earth science* article.

As soon as I see a list of potential DGW captain's lead with "1. Skrtel" I know it just can't be taken seriously.

                    > I have never seen any post of yours that wasn't crass, ignorant and halfwitted.

Shame, you should go back & check some of my Hot Topics then.

Or if if you'd like, I could send you a cpl links to some of the Fake Football articles I've had published on other sites? (Shh!)

                    > Please don't breed, the world could do without any more of you.

                    Ruth NZ, again r-e-l-a-x.

Personal insults don't bolster your claims.
I mean, even if I was Pol Pot, Skrtel's still a laughable captain's choice.

In the end, my advice is keep it simple.
And more importantly, don't get so worked up about this kind of stuff... it's just a freaking game.

Step back & actually think about this situation for a minute...

A stranger, in a fake football forum, calls Skrtel a *laughable* DGW captain's pick, which results in you getting worked up to the point where you feel the need to hurl middle-school type insults?

"You see your post is much like a 'flat earth science' article. As soon as I see a list of potential DGW captain's lead with '1. Skrtel' I know it just can't be taken seriously."

9 points from his first game with a realistic clean sheet opportunity to come. Still not worth seriously considering? The #2 OR captained Skrtel by the way.

"Now, go slap that armband on the big Slovak & prove us all wrong. I for one can't wait to see that screen cap."

As you'd have seen if you had looked at the post rather than just slagging it off without reading it you'd have seen it came down to N'Doye or Hazard for me. Hazard could still win out but as it stands I'm happy to be sitting with 26 points from N'Doye and another game to come.

I suggest you go and crawl back under your rock now. You were badly wrong about Sanchez and you are badly wrong again. Of course there would be nothing wrong with that if you weren't so derisive in your comments and so casually dismissive of anything that disagrees with your 'superior' view.

I like the thought you put into your posts Ruth. Regarding Bellerins pace against Hazard, any truth to the rumours that he's carrying an ankle injury? Hazard twisting and turning could be a nightmare there. Also, though its something you cant predict or plan for Haz is on pens which is a plus for him. SOmething to hope for I guess in a tight game against Arsenal.

Ultimately for me I base my captaincy on potential. And Hazard has the most potential to score big. If Ndoye scores a couple of goals and outscores Hazard I wont be too disheartened. If Haz goes on the rampage though, I'll be kicking myself. 😆

I don't know about any Bellerin injury.

        I'd like to captain N'Doye. But I need a sign. 😉

Hazard was interviewed recently on Chelsea TV and said he was tired. He has played 54 games this season after a long World Cup campaign. Mourinho commented on this at his press conference last week.

It will cause pandmonium on here if it happens but if Chelsea get a result (even a draw) at Arsenal I could see Hazard being rested to the bench against Leicester. I don't think it's probable but I think it's possible. So I will be listening intently to Jose's presser this Friday. If he gives me "the sign" my armband will come off Hazard and go on to N'Doye.

True he did say that alrighT and who could blame him alright. Think its possible he gets a rest but far more likely he gets a rest when the title is wrapped up. Maybe if they get a result against arsenal but if they dont he will surely play v Leicester but by then it will be too late to do anything about it.

I think I'm going for sterling. Baseball players always play better in their contract years, I don't see why football players can't up their game for money as well. They must do. He's not good on bonus points at all but I'm still having a punt.

Chelsea are so negative at the moment, I don't know if they can get out of it. It's like they've forgotten how to attack. Hazard's stats look brilliant over the last 10 games or so but I think arsenal will win 1 or 2 nil and leicester have 5 at the back.

      Good stats though, thanks

Interesting stats, I wont captain Hazard exactly for the reasons you mention. Between Henderson, Fabregas and Coutinho, I will probably go with a Liverpool midfielder, havent decided yet though. Any thoughts to help me decide?

Mignolet is reliant on 2 clean sheets. Skrtel has the same clean sheet points plus a chance of goals and a better chance of BPs as well.

If you're putting down Skrtel as a real captain option then you have to feel you're looking for 2 clean sheets minimum. If this is the case then I think it puts N'Doye a bit further down the pecking order as you're then not expecting him to score in one of his games which almost makes him a single game week captain. Of course he could nick a goal against Liverpool for reasons above but I think a Liverpool clean sheet is quite likely.

I know you don't like looking at what's happened in the past (at least from a points perspective) but as you brought up last seasons 7 goals for Skrtel I thought it would be interesting to see how many attempts he had last year compared to this.

This season in 27 games he has had 14 attempts in the box and scored 1 goal. Terry for example has had 16 attempts (albeit in a few more games) and scored 3.

Last season Skrtel only had 15 attempts in the box and scored 7 goals! I suppose you can read that either way - that he has an eye for goal and we've just not seen it yet, or that last season was a bit of an anomaly.

Fwiw I think Skrtel is the best option for Liverpool defence and I'll be getting him in but I won't consider him a captain. It's not that he won't score well it's for the same reasons I will never captain a single game week player. There's too much risk vs possible gains.

On Sterling I have to agree - he seems the choice to go for if you want a Liverpool player. I can see an argument that makes him the best choice even ahead of Hazard this week.

That being said I'm still leading my mini leagues and fully expect rivals to captain Hazard so I will too. With an 8 PPG average over the last 5 games I can't resist 😉

I don't mind looking at points scored in the past at all, I do it all the time.

I just think you then have to ask yourself why they have been scored. Is there a lot of luck involved (example Murray, 3 shots on target in 3 games, 3 goals) or there another explanation (example Murray, Palace playing very well and him getting on the end of easy tap-ins)? When you have an idea why points have been scored you can make an assessment about how likely the trend is to continue.

2 or 3 good points scores don't make a good FPL pick. And 2 or 3 blanks don't make a bad one. Not necessarily.

Your Skrtel comment is fair. I think the Hull-Liverpool game is one of the hardest to predict in terms of what kind of game it will be. And it partly depends on their results in the first GW matches. If N'Doye scores a couple and Hull win against Palace they will have a real go at Liverpool. If Hull lose and Liverpool win at WBA you could see Liverpool strangling the life out of an already deflated Hull.

Great Analysis - though the main thing I am taking from it is that there is no clear front runner!

If I had all the performance-related statistics necessary to predict the results this week, I'm pretty Hazard would be leading the pack,, no competition. But it's hard to define in numbers the changes in dynamics and circumstances that occur at this point in the season, and we are surely going to see performances this week that would be "low probability" in any other scenario.

Hazard is probably the easiest choice (the safest choice) and that's great for anyone leading or wanting to play it safe.. It's a real gamble to hope for any other striker or mid out there to deliver more than him because there won't be any data to support that claim.

I guess in the quest for differential only those who follow their gut will be rewarded... there is no right answer. I'm not convinced by Liverpool's recent form.. I'd rather captain Skrtel than Sterling anyway.. but ultimately I don't think I could do either. Henderson is probably the one I would be closest to captaining, but even that is a shot in the dark. Even Vardy is an unknown quantity.. I know he can score but there's nothing to stop others getting those goal points.

This DGW isn't even comparable to the last one.. Austin and Benteke were much safer "bets"!

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 9 Years
        9 years, 1 month ago

Well, neither were really. Benteke had 1 good fixture, United (a) wasn't encouraging. QPR had 2 away games and a discouraging away record. They managed to score 7 goals in those 2 away games having previously scored 10 goals in 14 away games.

If lightning strikes like that again, N'Doye or a Leicester striker could be the one.

But they didn't have as many rivals They seemed like clear front runners among the double game week players.. and there was evidence of both of them being able to produce, though I admit I never broke it down to away stats versus home stats. I just went with my gut. And the fact there was an extra game to produce..

Please,no Wasi! Dish out the extra .5, or .6m more Morhan/Schlupp IMO. Wasi is by no means guaranteed 60 minutes, he's subbed off at the 45 minutes interval frequently. Would also take Clyne out for sure, Saints are stuggling away from home (TOT, sun, avl, AVL, mci) they may struggle to garner clean sheets here IMO. That cash for Clyne is better used elsewhere tbh.

-Wasil not nailed on (someone correct me if im wrong). Schlupp the way to go imo.
-Moreno although he offers attacking potential has been a bit of a mess. Skrtle and Migno are the only 2 Pool defenders I'd consider.

-Not sure we need 2 starting keepers at this point...Mignolet looks right for the double and beyond.

Yes I agree, but Soton have looked tripe recently as well ... no attacking threat and their backline has been less than reliable. I'd say it's a 50-50 but I would always err on the side of the attacking option. At the end of the day you're choosing the equal leading goal-scorer in the Premier League this year, over the 3rd best defender.

Maybe Bertrand because between the two of 'em, Clyne has an ever-so-small chance of being "rested" (contract talks ? man utd interest?)

      Mignolet (Ospina)
      Terry Skrtel Schlupp (PVA, Vlaar)
      Hazard Fab Sterling Diame Cambiasso
      Aguero Vardy (Bentekkers)

Expecting my remaining FTs to be 2 Ars in (Sanchez/Giroud) and 1 Sun in (Defoe?), for DGW 37

Could someone explain to me how to interpret the "Defensive Errors" column in the defending table of the Team Stats section..

      - The teams that's conceded most goals over the last 6 matches has 0 errors
      - The team that's considered the strongest defense in the league, and has let in second least number of goals in last 6 - is joint top for defensive errors in the last 6 along with the likes of Newcastle

I'm trying to figure out if I should play Wollscheid or PvA this weekend, should I just say sod it all and toss a coin?

      Sincerely,

        I couldn't tell you honestly.

Possibly: the team that has conceded the most goals haven't made any defensive errors, such as turning the ball over, failed clearance, etc. - they're just not very good at keeping the opposition from shooting. The team with clean sheets, etc. may block shots and the goalie makes saves, hence clean sheets, but they still turn the ball over, clear for a corner, concede free kicks, etc.

I don't really know sorry Enzo, maybe one for the senior executives of the site?

That makes a lot of sense TE, thanks. Can imagine the two teams in question fitting the profile you described, actually.

Perhaps this is just an interesting statistical anomaly, but a word of caution for anyone trawling the members area to decide which defender to play ... stay away from the "Sort by Errors" button !

Haha no they're not both the same teams as the players' teams (only one of them is :P) I meant the teams joint top and bottom of the defensive errors column...

On a related topic I hate dancing on tiptoe about these members area stats, apologies to all if it sounds like we're playing a poor wordgame, dangling clues left and right.. it would be nice to have some way of discussing this better

Simply, the vast majority of goals aren't down to defensive errors. It refers to things like the ball being passed straight to an attacker, slips/falls, errors of communication between defenders/keepers, balls being dropped, and basically any situation where the opposition scores shortly after the defending team is in a position of safety.

Thanks Ludo, I appreciate the explanation, and viewed in isolation, I would agree with you..

it's just that the data doesn't fit the expectation - I just don't see the team in question (joint top of max defensive errors) doing any of the things you listed above, unfortunately. Ah well, in OPTA we trust !

They had one unusual game away from home recently, which was quite an anomaly. Over the season their record is generally very good in that department.

Forgoing Sanchez on my WC or future transfer plans make all this WC planning 10x easier. He'll certainly be the standout captaincy option Gw37 though, so there's a definite risk involved here. yet it makes all the difference downgrading him Ozil, could then in Coutinho over Hendo, Huth over Duff, Skrtel over Moreno, and Ivan over Terry.

Thoughts guys? Just feels like Sanchez, Giroud, Ramsey is so faultless for these coming GW's

      1. Ludo
        • 10 Years
        9 years, 1 month ago

I think Giroud is the standout GW37 captain, by a mile. Sanchez is always capable of a massive score, but he's not so consistent and reliable in the system they've played in the second half of the season.

        1. Zasa
          • 9 Years

True, yet it still harbors some doubt for me. Sanchez has been playing recently, but that extra 2.3m could do some good for my team long term. Will ponder on this, cheers Ludo.

Regarding Giroud I think so too. But Arsenal are playing differently now Ramsey is in the team. Less is going through Ozil and Sanchez is getting more play again.

I haven't had Sanchez since GW22 but I'll be bringing him in next week.

I get that. There is another way if you are on wildcard...

Try Ospina/Schmeichel as your GKs. Then you'll find you can afford Sanchez and Giroud.

        1. Zasa
          • 9 Years
          9 years, 1 month ago

Aye, I also played around with that, but in essence it makes my team more expensive as Davis would become Ospina, and Mata would just become Ramsey.

Think my original plan of just Ospina, Ramsey,Giroud is kinder and allows for the upgrades I stated. Cheers, Ruth.

Coming to the same conclusion on Sanchez, hard for me to get him back without hits

Will be Giroud and Ozil for me plus one of Ospina/Ramsey. I think Giroud will be the most C player that week.

Yeah, sans Sanchez really eases future trannies. It's a risky call, Sanchez has looked great as of late, just a question of whether Ozil shows some form soon. Aye, you're probably right considering his more obtainable price and current ownership% in the top 10k

I have a funny feeling (i.e. if i was chasing a lead) that I'd punt on Ivanovic, simply because he's "due" some attacking returns.

TE, on the topic of funny and somewhat counter intuitive members area stats - have you seen Ivanovic's average playing position from last week ?

            http://members.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/player-profiles/branislav-ivanovic/

Look on your right for the big green circle marked "33", you can't miss it 😀 With Mourinho having a similar tactic in mind for the Arsenal game, would you still punt on Ivan's long overdue attacking returns ?

Wowee ... yeah, that changes the thinking somewhat (A LOT).

It does make sense, i think Mou has probably instructed his backline to be more traditional with their setup (as opposed to playing centre forward).

Actually I really don't know who you're tempted by 😛 that's a bit too cryptic for me.. I could use some help, what column should I sort by ?

I did sort by "Big Chances" and then by "Set Play attempts" and love what I'm seeing at the top ! (considering I have both the set piece taker and main target for headers)

Sorry, looking at chances (both total, on goal and inside box) are all dominated by City.

If i got horribly drunk and felt like destroying my season I'd put the armband on Aguero just for some fun! I have a feeling they'll remain with 4-2-3-1 and smash a hungover Villa 4-0.

You realise that WC transfers don't count towards the sums for price changes? Lots of people, me included, have got Mignolet on their WC, but only non-WC transfers count. I think that's how it works anyway

I feel bad ditching Silva on a wildcard.
      Current mid is

      Sterling Haz Fab Hendo Ramsey

Money no object. Would you ditch any of these for Silva this week?

I don't see the rationale behind it, I would just play thr DGW attacker IMO, OneTwo.

Not to disagree with Zosa ... but i disagree 🙂

I think Murray is a great shout, yes he blanked last week by palace had an off-day ... and his previous 6-7 weeks have been outstanding. i expect they'll chase a win this week and Murray will be heavily involved.

If you had Vardy, you'd probably have to play him though ... otherwise when else would you?

          Can you play both, surely?

This is what I'm looking at with my WC...

                Migno (gilks)
                Terry Skrtle Schlupp (pva, duff)
                Haz Fab Coutinho Silva (albrighton)
                Kun Kane Vardy

4.4 ITB...Vardy to Giroud next week.

Looks pretty good, although if you have Albrighton would you not play him?

I can't bring myself to play 3 LEI players...Kane could easily burn me with a brace as could Silva.

                  King over Albrighton.
                  Sterling over Coutinho.
                  Fab to Ramsey Week 36.
                  Vardy to Giroud Week 35.

Will you keep and play the player for GW 35?

If so Vardy for me as he has NEW at home and Murray has che away.

If not, really not sure. Sorry

I am weighing this up now, but will keep Murray for now while I make my final choice.

I am considering getting Vardy, I would not really want Murray for Chelsea and would be happier to have Vardy's 2 games (all be it one is vs Chelsea) and then Leicester have Newcastle - that is making me thinking punt on Vardy is worth it

      B) Getting rid

Don't you have value tied up in him? My selling price is £5.9m, and would cost me £6.5m to bring him back as things stand

            • 9 Years

Not much mate, selling at 6.1m, and either way I don't think value should hold too much weight in critical decision making at this point in the season IMO, Fionn.

Would be running an Aguero - Tekkers - Giroud frontline from Gw35 'til Gw37
            Gw37 - Tekkers (sou) to Kane(HUL)
            Gw 38 - Kane(eve) to Tekkers (BUR)

True, a few hundred k doesn't mean much for these last few games. What would be your front 3 be for this week then, assuming you had a WC?

Same one Fionn, would need that frontline untouched 'til Gw37 so I can do those two moves Gw37 and 38 (I meant Gw34-37 btw.
