Scout Scribbles – Bony Back in Training for City

Wilfried Bony closes in on a return to action for City. Hugo Lloris could be in contention for Tottenham, conflicting reports surround the fitness of Toby Alderweireld, whilst Harry Kane looks poised to turn out for England Under 21s in this summer’s European Championships.

Bony Returns to Training for City

Wilfried Bony took part in first-team training on Wednesday, having sat out Manchester City’s last three matches with an ankle injury.

The Scout Says: Following City’s switch to a lone striker formation in the previous two Gameweeks, Sergio Aguero has rediscovered his scoring touch and netted three goals. Prior to that, the Argentinian frontman had struggled to find his rhythm in a two-man attack, drawing blanks in five successive matches. As such, one might expect head coach Manuel Pellegrini to be wary of reinstating £30 million January signing Bony upon his eventual return, with the Chilean’s job hanging in the balance in light of three defeats in five. Indeed, with three winnable home ties (AVL, QPR, SOU) left on the agenda, City might not require the extra firepower to finish a disappointing season with a flourish.

Uncertainty surrounds Alderweireld fitness

Only yesterday, Southampton boss Ronald Koeman revealed that news on Toby Alderweireld’s recovery from injury is “positive”, suggesting that he could be in contention for their Tottenham visit on Saturday. Unconfirmed reports emanating from Belgian journalists earlier this morning suggest the versatile defender “won’t be available for a few weeks”, though.

The Scout Says: Having started Gameweek 32 at right-back, the versatile Alderweireld found himself employed in a two-man pivot alongside Morgan Schneiderlin during Saints’ 2-1 loss to Stoke City on the weekend due to Victor Wanyama’s suspension. With the Kenyan enforcer serving the second game of his ban next Gameweek, Alderweireld’s potential absence could prompt Koeman to drop Steven Davis back into the midfield two and field James Ward-Prowse in the No. 10 berth or move Sadio Mane into a central role behind Graziano Pelle. At a price of just 4.9, Alderweireld has offered a cheap alternative to Nathaniel Clyne (6.2) and Ryan Bertrand (5.9) of late but with the Saints poised for a trio of road trips in their final five fixtures, in addition to home encounters with Spurs and Villa, many owners may now be considering selling their assets for double Gameweek contenders instead.

Lloris closing in on weekend return

Reports suggest Hugo Llloris is back in contention for Tottenham’s trip to Southampton after being sidelined for the last three league matches with a cut to the knee.

The Scout Says: Although Lloris’ possible return to action would undoubtedly be a boost to manager Mauricio Pochettino ahead of the south coast showdown, even the much-vaunted French shot-stopper hasn’t been able to prevent Spurs from leaking goals this season. Aside from Queens Park Rangers (five), Crystal Palace and Leicester City (both six), no side has earned fewer clean sheets (seven) than the North London club, while only the Foxes (66) have conceded more big chances (65). With first-choice right-back Kyle Walker all but ruled out for the season with a foot injury, doubts over Danny Rose (hamstring) and a testing schedule on the horizon (sou, MCI, sto, HUL, eve), further shut-outs look increasingly unlikely for Tottenham’s rearguard regardless of the Frenchman’s availability.

Kane eager to play in U21 Euros

FA Chairman Greg Dyke insists that Harry Kane is determined to line up for the England U21s in the European Championship this summer:

“I got a call from Harry Kane’s agent recently just to say how much he enjoyed playing for England and how much he wants to play for the Under-21s this year in the tournament, in the Euros. And I think that’s important. If you’re a young English boy coming through the system, you should want to play for England.”

The Scout Says: Considering that Tottenham’s pre-season friendlies kicked off around mid-July last summer, and the U21 European Championship concludes on 30 June, Kane is likely to rejoin the group in the middle of their training fixtures – given that he’ll require a holiday upon returning from Czech Republic. The chief concern here is that the PFA Player of the Year nominee could at risk of burnout, having tallied 46 appearances for the Lilywhites in his breakthrough season and started their previous 23 league encounters. Already, then, there are growing concerns over his availability for the start of the following season, which gets underway earlier than ever on August 8.

I have been priced out of getting Sanchez next week against Hull. Is it worth a hit bringing him in for either Fabregas or Silva or just wait a week and get him in for free against Swansea?

It´s still a minus 4. Question is will Skrtel make up for the hit? I think so, especially since he got QPR after the DGW.

Take your point. I agree - Liverpool don't have bad fixtures until the end of the season, Chelsea game aside...it's that big -8 overall that worries me, that's all!

If you're going 1 defence + 2 attack then just leave Bellerin in there I'd say but if you're going 3 Arsenal attackers now is as good a time as any to shift him.

Looking pretty good arvin! Not convinced by Courtois myself, and I'm failing to convince myself of the rationality of picking Albrighton, but hopefully all goes well.

Draft #672, plenty more to come I'm sure 😛

      Schmeichel (Davis)
      Ivan Skrtel Terry (Koscielny) (PvA)
      Hazard Sterling Hendo Albrighton (Sanchez)
      Kun Kane Vardy

Probably mental for even considering benching Sanchez for Albrighton but being maxed out on funds...thoughts?

        Route to Giroud:

GW36 - Ivan -> cheapest possible, will probably only be able to afford a 3.9 and Vardy -> Giroud.

I'm not the only one 😀

The main reason I'm not convinced by Courtois is that I think he has a good chance of being rotated in the last few games should Chelsea wrap up the league early, as a swan song for the departing Cech. Since the keepers that we buy now are highly likely to be the ones we finish the season with, it doesn't seem like a risk worth taking when there are other, more nailed, higher points-attracting Chelsea otptions.

    GW34

    SCHMEICHEL
    SKRTEL HUTH TERRY
    FABREGAS HAZARD STERLING CAMBIASSO COUTINHO
    Aguero Giroud

    Panti Kane Vlaar PvA

    GW35 - Save
GW36 - Fabs, Sterling & Coutinho to Ozil, Sanchez & 5.9 mid (AJ, Larsson or Sissoko)
    GW37 save
GW38 punt with 2 FT depending on MLs

    Thoughts?

rather than take a hit in 36 - have you got enough in the bank to do Sterling > Ozil in 35?

If not, I'd try and find that somehow (Vlaar > Duff maybe?)

Great team and decent plan (though I'd not pan for a hit).

      Mine below:
      Schmeichel (K Davies)
      Terry, Skrtel, Schlupp (PVA, Duff)
      Hazard, Cesc, Henderson, Sterling, Cambiasso
      Giroud, Aguero (Kane)

      & planning for Cesc & Ster -> Sanchez & Ramsey GW35.

Unless you think a Leicester defender is a good option for the rest of the season

Schlupp can easily be benched, is a very attacking defender(/OOP mid/fwd), and Leicester have great fixtures and are fighting for a spot in the PL. Plus, a hit for a DGW-er is only a -2.

Koscielny has an extremely low chance of getting any points this week, and Burnley can't score for crap.

I remember bringing in Connor Wickham late last season as Sunderland had a DGW. He was in decent form previously and it seemed like a good move. I don't think he got anything, can't quite remember but it was an awful move.

Jamie Vardy reminds me of this. Surprised with the amount of teams with him in. Just goes to show what a loss Costa and Sturridge are.

    WC Time! Good to go?

    Schmeichel // Ospina (sub)
    Terry // Schlupp // Moreno // sub1. PVA // sub2. Duff
    Hazard (C) // Fabregas// Sterling // Henderson // sub3. Boyd
    Aguero // Giroud // Vardy

Thinking it''s worth getting rid of Boyd and using the extra capital elsewhere?

Plan is to swap Fabregas for Sanchez and Vardy for Defoe in time for GW 37...i've got £2.7 million in the bank. This means i'll have 3 Arsenal and 2 Sunderland.

Moreno is more attacking imo, sometimes he's OOP. But he often lacks an end product. Skrtel gets baps, and is a threat at corners.

I'm an LFC fan. Moreno from open play obviously has more attacking threat due to his advanced position and playing out wide as opposed to cenrtally. Skrtel still carries some threat from set pieces though, and as others have stated scored 7 goals last season. He's only scored one this season but still a threat.

All in all, if I had the cash I'd get Skrtel.

I'm getting Mignolet but that's because the situation is slightly different for me.

    4. The Raging Bull
      • 10 Years

Skrtel goals last season was due to the sharp crosses Gerrard put in, this season Gerrard's set pieces have been very poor. I have seen no signs of the quality changing.

Moreno has made attacking runs in games, however, they haven't been goal threatening.

Skrtl the better choice as his ability to pick up bonus points.
