The Big Numbers – Arsenal – Last Six Gameweeks

With a double Gameweek 37 on the horizon, many Fantasy managers are already eyeing up Arsenal’s main assets as the north London club look to cement second spot behind Chelsea. The recent return of Aaron Ramsey to the Gunners’ first XI has brought the Welshman onto our radars after he served up two goals, three assists and six bonus points in his last five appearances.

Certainly, there’s no shortage of target within Arsene Wenger’s side. Alexis Sanchez already sits in 27% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) teams, whilst Olivier Giroud – with seven goals and an assist in his last nine – is surely set for significant investment up front. With Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla also worth considering, we delve into the data and assess Arsenal’s displays since Ramsey’s return to the starting line-up in Gameweek 29.

With Gameweek 34 now behind us, we thought we’d apply our usual Big Numbers approach to the most pertinent issue facing Fantasy Managers – a form check on Arsenal’s assets ahead of Gameweek 37.

It’s worth bearing in mind that the Gunners had a blank Gameweek 33, of course, and have therefore played only five times in the last six rounds of fixtures.

Think my next 4 transfers will be N'doye, Sterling, Hendo and Vardy to Giroud, Rambo, Chadli and Defoe.

I have the exact cash, so something is bound to go wrong!

    Assessing the GW34 Wildcard

Building on an earlier post that showed GW34 wildcarders to have averaged a 24-point gain in the top 10k (84 points wildcard average vs 60 points non-wildcard average post hits) I thought it would be interesting to assess how valuable the wildcard actually was.

The key difference now lies in the players managers now have in their teams and how well set they are for the final 4 GWs. Personally I replaced 10 of 15 players in my squad though some wildcarders weren't so radical. Nevertheless there are certain types of transfer that many wildcarders made. Assessing how these changes will unwind over the next 1-2 GWs should also be taken into account when assessing wildcard value.

Here are some of the more common wildcarder transfers:

    Defence:

    Clyne/Bertrand/Fonte to Skrtel or Moreno

Obviously a win for Skrtel owners but not for Moreno owners so far. A 10-point swing if you took Skrtel. But how will this unwind?

Liverpool have QPR (h) next up, Southampton have Sunderland (a). Will either, both or neither team get a clean sheet this weekend?

    Midfield:

    Eriksen to Sterling
    Silva to Fabregas
    Mane/Siggy to Henderson/Coutinho

The DGW midfielders under-performed really, all the main ones scored 5 points apart from Fabregas' 8 points. Nevertheless they out performed the "template" midfielders they replaced with the exception of Sigurdsson's 13 pointer. Eriksen, Silva and Mane each scored 1-2 points.

The unwind of this one is interesting. Chelsea and Liverpool have good fixtures this GW. But if Silva (in particular) gets a haul the swing could be back in favour of the non-wildcarders.

    Forwards

    Kane to Vardy/N'Doye

Again a 7-10 point swing for wildcarders here but they now don't have Kane. Will they regret that? How will Kane perform in the next couple of GWs? A run of goals from him would certainly favour non-wildcarders (who mostly kept him) though some wildcarders kept him as well.

I have not looked at lower-priced players (Leicester and Hull GKs, defenders and midfielders) because they have given obvious short-term wins in the main and are cheap enough to be benched from now on. And I think projecting over 1-2 weeks is as much as is valid because teams will naturally coalesce into a new template now as DGW 37 approaches.

    Liverpool v QPR
    Chelsea v Palace
    Leicester v Newcastle
    Spurs v City
    Sunderland v Southampton

I think these will be the key games in GW 35 that will help to define how valuable the GW 34 wildcard actually was.

I belive that everyone who used their wildcard had the rest of the season in mind as well. I had over 7m in the bank for getting Arsenal attacking players.

And with Liverpool/Chelsea players in your squad youre sitting pretty good, given their upcoming matches.

This was a pretty hard time to fail at your wildcard, i dont belive many did this gameweek and i dont think they will suffer after the next either.

Interested to know how well set up non-WCers are for GW37...will they be needing to take hits again or happy just to go with ARS. As a WCer last week, I was able to get 9DGWers but also able to plan for 6DGW37ers without any hits (whether or not 3 SUN is wise remains to be seen).

Thanks Ruth. My initial thoughts are whether wild carding or taking hits, unless you were very unlucky, it was a great week for clearing out the deadwood. Doing neither was the wrong option I'd guess.

The good thing about this DGW is that all the DGW teams, except Hull, have decent fixtures going forward. I went crazy with DGW players (10 + Aguero) plus 2 Arsenal and 2 Sunderland on the bench. Result was my best GW rank ever. Next week, I'll have 2 Chelsea, 3 Pool, 2 Ars and 2 Lei - all good fixtures - without a transfer. By GW37 I'll have 6 DGW players without taking a hit. I imagine other WCers will have similar plans.

Good preliminary assessment - still too soon to call either way. Like you've mentioned, Kane and Silva's upcoming performances will probably be the determining factors, plus the hits taken to dump excess Pool mids, get in Sanchez/Ramsey etc.

Oh and I'd like to add that Mignolet in was a pretty popular transfer, so it's not just Skrtel who's covering 'Pool's CS points !

      1. Ruth_NZ

Yes, that's true about Mignolet. Schmeichel was a pretty popular GK in as well. But I think the GKs that were removed for them tended to be more varied - Myhill, Foster, Krul, Heaton, Guzan and Green were some that wildcarders may have been removed for Schmeichel, whilst Fabianski, De Gea and Lloris are some that may have been removed for Mignolet. So assessing the value of that change is more difficult to assess in general terms.

In my case I kept Kane and replaced Murray with Vardy so I'm 11 points to the good already and I can still benefit from any points Kane scores.
I suspect quite a few replaced Murray, Remy or Austin, rather than Kane.

Nice appraisal of the situation having done a GW34 WC yourself. I agree that we are yet to find out the full extent of damage the WC's has done and we probably won't know for a couple of GW's yet when we see how much the template SGW players falter and how Leicester and Liverpool players continue to perform.

Don't forget about the advantage to the wild-carders in the weeks preceding the one in which it was played.

Those who had a wildcard to play in DGW34 could plan their transfers up to GW33 without having to worry about GW34 onwards, so they ought to have outscored the rest in those preceding weeks too.

Whether it was worth the points that may have been lost earlier in the season by not playing an early wildcard is another matter though.

This is a really good point. In not having to save any FTs for GW34, I was able to play 2FTs in GW33 (one week punts) and get a GW rank of 26k, then fully WC the team for GW34.

Taking into account who my free transfer would have been otherwise, my GW34 wildcard profited me 50 points directly in one game week. Like you say, maybe Silva, Kane and Clyne will punish me for abandoning them in favour of a Liverpool mid, Giroud and Skrtel, but I'm quietly confident they won't.

      Liverpool 2-1 QPR

Not great for wildcarders apart from Coutinho's 13-pointer. Skrtel owners will be cursing the loss of a clean sheet and Gerrard's penalty miss which cost Skrtel an assist. Consolation comes in the shape of 2 goals conceded by Southampton which means all the Clyne/Fonte/Bertrand to Skrtel transfers still came out well ahead over the 2 GWs. Moreno owners just lost out plain and simple.

      Leicester 3-0 Newcastle

A clean sheet here on the back of good DGW scores was great for owners of Schmeichel, Morgan and Albrighton and improved matters for those with Schlupp. Those who brought Vardy/Ulloa in have also gained over 2 GWs although non-wildcarders with Benteke will be pleased with where they stand as well. Leicester assets have in general been a brilliant success of the DGW wildcard.

      Sunderland 2-1 Southampton

Another blank for Southampton defenders was a benefit for wildcarders, many of whom got rid. Of the Southampton assets, only the heavily transferred-out Mane has helped those that held on.

      Spurs v City
      Chelsea v Palace

Captain pick will be spread in DGW, I imagine Giroud may be the most popular. There will also be some that go for Koscielny or Ramsey or even gamble on Wickham if he strikes form before then.

Sanchez or Ozil is the toughest decision for me, my other two Arsenal I have already. But I think I will be going with Ozil as the extra 2.4m makes a difference in terms of my options for GW38.

Fortunately with Liverpool and Chelsea having good fixtures this week i can happily save FT and defer my decision.

How come?! He's the most explosive player of that bunch. Scored brace recently in Cup SFs so all these out of form talk isn't exactly true. He's more nailed on than Giroud for eg. who was rested for Welbeck in cup. Sanchez is the best Captain pick for the double.

Good evening 🙂 Need some help

Who will score the most this GW:
    a) Sterling
    b) Henderson
    c) Ramsey

Will do Sterling and Hendo -> Ramsey and Ozil during this and/or next GW, and wondering if I should do either Sterling or Henderson out for Ramsey this GW or next....

    Thoughts/votes appreciated:)

Yep. Just 2pts for a CS for defensive mids in FPL would be good enough - but they'd need to split the mids into two categories then. Bonus attacking / defensive pts across the board is perhaps a better way of doing it.

VC is okay, although I'm old school in preferring C only. Just thought the ability to manipulate it after some results begin to trickle is wrong. Obviously, if rules allow it, it isn't actually "wrong", but you get my point.

Ah yeah...it rewards a sneaky style of play. I haven't been doing it in UFPL because you'd need a non-playing player on the bench and it seems a waste...but I'd rather just have captains set after the deadline (with a VC to mitigate any absent captains).

Are there any stats on frequency of a second thrashing following a first one? I could see an argument that adjustments get made to prevent a repeat of the first go 'round -- even if the result ends up similar, the damage is done in a different way. But no idea if that is supported by the numbers.

Colocinni & Ryan Taylor at Newcastle of the easy schedule and terrible form - though rather Janmaat if money's there who isn't quite a differential.

Should I take Silva out for....

    a) Ozil

    b) Mata

    c) Ramsey

    d) Keep Silva

I think (d). Taking out Silva is brave. Try and bring in Ramsey for some other midfielder?

Why are so many people going with Hazard (c)
After seeing his last 2 performances I'm not really convinced that he will get a big score

I reckon most will go with Aguero

He is the top scoring player in the game ffs! 1 Penalty from him usually results in double digit haul. And he's up against Palace defence in Chelsea's exhibition at Bridge. Still you don't get it?!

I've just gone back to Aguero (c) from Hazard (c). I previously had Aguero (c) having changed from Hazard (c). Hope that helps.

Coutinho upfront then? Allen keeping his place ahead of both Gerrard and Lucas(back in training)?

Moreno being back could shift Can into midfield? Any thoughts?

But one thing is sure, Can will not be shiftet back to midfield 😛

B is home 3 out of 4 with matches that go: mid-table team playing for pride and nothing else, mid-table team playing for pride and nothing else, Europa league qualifying team jockeying for position, Burnley

A is away 3 out of 4 with matches that go: relegation battle team, relegation battle team, relegation battle team, Man City

Is anyone else feeling a bit sceptical for the DGW after this one? I am starting to think I won't take a 4 point hit, just go for the 2 Arsenal players and end of story.

My combination plan is Giroud and Ozil.

No, im not sceptical, very optimistic to be honest. Will be getting 3 offensive Arsenal men. Giroud, Sanchez and Ozil (maybe Ramsey, depends on who i ship out and if i cant afford Ozil)

      Aslo have Pants and PVA.

Hi Demi, Hi FFScoucast team, who are sometimes asking for advice, how to make this amazing website even 'better', I always read your predicted lineUps Demi, as they're the best in the country from what I know but I do really care about the positions,( although if I own a player, I will likely do my own research as well.) I would absolutely love if the line ups were even more precise, showing your expectations of the real position (like placing them as in Fifa in one of 100 positions. Ramsey a little more inverted, Hazard a little further up than Willian etc.) it hasn't got to be calculated, just your expectation, and if members would automatically see the RMT Tools prediction next to the player, that would be so great, that every fantasy player should think no more of whether to spend 15bucks. Good for the site really. Just spoonfeed us

I disagree! Think the lineups are pretty spot on!

I am not sure tbh, as i'm not really involved with that technical side of it. I purely write the blurbs and guess the 11 starters. But it might be good to email Mark, and he can give you a better response.
