The Promoted – Bournemouth

We begin our look at the three clubs promoted from the Championship with the champions, Bournemouth. The Cherries will play in the top flight for the first time in their 125 year history after sealing promotion with a 3-0 home win against Bolton, with the title secured on the final day of the season after a 3-0 victory at Charlton.

We take time out to examine Bournemouth’s record, assess the tactics employed by their manager and run the rule of their promotion squad, picking out the targets that will likely draw our attention in pre-season.

Eddie Howe’s side topped the table with 90 points over the 46 matches played, one point clear of second placed Watford and four ahead of Norwich, in third. That total is 12 points less than Leicester achieved as champions a year earlier, while Burnley also managed 95 points in their promotion season.

Bournemouth’s strength undoubtedly lies in their attacking prowess, with the Cherries scoring 98 times in their promotion campaign, seven more than nearest rivals Watford. They balanced that attacking intent remarkably well at the back, with only 45 goals conceded, making them the second best defensive unit in the league.

The Cherries found goals hard to come by in front of their own fans at the start of the season, scoring exactly one goal in their first four home matches, but from that point onwards, they managed at least two goals in 15 of their final 19 encounters at Goldsands Stadium. Defensively, Howe’s men conceded at least two goals in ten of their 23 home encounters, with ten clean sheets accrued.

Bournemouth’s record on the road is highly impressive. They scored more times away from Goldsands (50 to 48) and also conceded less (20 to 25), picking up nine shut-outs on the road. They scored at least twice on 13 of their 23 road trips and conceded more than a single goal on just four occasions.

The Manager

Now in his second spell managing the club, Eddie Howe has enjoyed a lengthy association with AFC Bournemouth, having spent the majority of his playing career with the south coast side. He had a fairly brief stint in charge at Burnley between 2011 and 2012, but returned to Bournemouth to lead the Cherries firstly to the Championship, and now to the Premier League.

The 37-year-old favours a 4-4-1-1 or 4-4-2 system, which, as this handy tactical analysis highlights, morphs into a 2-4-3-1 when in possession. This sees the wingers tucking in slightly in the final third, thus allowing the full-backs leeway to bomb forward and support their side’s attacks – a ploy which Howe may decide to curtail against some of the Premier League’s tougher opposition.

Howe has gained plaudits for his side’s attacking, possession-based style of play which saw them score 112 goals in all competitions. Amongst Championship sides, Bournemouth had the highest percentage of both possession and successful passes in 2014/15 and also fired more shots per match than any of their peers. Howe uses performance analysts to help his approach and admits he’s keen to follow the data:

“I find statistics a good thing to measure and we do look closely at then, but we don’t go crazy on it, and I certainly don’t use it against players.”

It’s perhaps no surprise that the forward-thinking Howe has already seen him tipped for greater things. As explained by right-back Simon Francis, Howe’s training methods are based on a former Barcelona manager:

“We work a lot on training on the stuff that Guardiola does, what he did at Barcelona and does at Bayern. Obviously we’re nowhere near what they are doing, but Eddie likes to look at them and how they are playing positionally. He’s the next level with this kind of thing, honestly. We do some sessions in training where we get split into two XIs. One team will go into one changing room and one into the other. One team is Barcelona and one team is Bayern Munich. We pretend it’s the second leg of a Champions League game and one team is 2-1 down and with ten men, so they have to go for it. We’ll go out onto the pitch and we’ll play the last 15 minutes out with two different styles of play.”

The Promoted Squad

The Cherries stuck with much of the squad that finished tenth in their first campaign in the Championship for their promotion-winning season. The major move saw Coventry striker Callum Wilson brought in to replace Lewis Grabban, who had scored 24 goals for Bournemouth in the 2013/14 season. Wilson was signed for an undisclosed fee, thought to have been around £3 million, a similar amount to the fee involved in taking Grabban to Norwich.

Andrew Surman was signed from the Canaries for an undisclosed fee, while Artur Boruc came in on loan from Southampton last September. Cardiff’s Kenwyne Jones was also signed on loan for the final six weeks of the season. Crucially, many of Bournemouth’s key players are in their early to mid-twenties, so an approach similar to Leicester’s this season could be on the cards. Howe is likely to keep faith in several of the players who got them to the Premier League, but also have an eye on bringing in four or five players who could come straight into the starting XI.

Artur Boruc (37 starts) – brought in from Southampton on loan in September, the veteran signed a one-year deal with Bournemouth earlier today after being released on a free by the Saints.

Simon Francis (42 starts, 1 goal, 6 assists) – the first choice right-back was one of two Bournemouth players to be voted into the PFA Championship Team of the Season. Francis likes to get forward, as illustrated by the six assists picked up during the promotion campaign, and links well with Matt Ritchie down the flank. Francis produced an eye-catching 76 key passes over his 42 appearances.

Charlie Daniels (41 starts, 1 sub app. 1 goal, 4 assists) – although Daniels produced just two assists less than Francis from left-back, he’s far less an offensive threat and created 46 chances for his team-mates by comparison.

Adam Smith (6 starts, 23 sub apps. 1 goal, 5 assists) – able to play at right-back, left-back and as a wing back, the former Tottenham youngster has good pace and provided five assists last season. He struggled to hold down a place in the starting XI and that challenge will only get tougher with new recruits expected.

Tommy Elphick (46 starts, 1 goal, 2 assists) – club captain and only missed 27 minutes of the title winning campaign. Looks certain to be an important player next season, but may find the going hard against forwards with pace.

Steve Cook (46 starts, 5 goals, 1 assist) – the biggest threat among the defenders from set-pieces, registering five goals last season. Was a constant in a largely settled back four for the Cherries and his prowess suggests he could offer an alternative to Francis for those planning to invest in the Bournemouth backline.

Andrew Surman (40 starts, 1 sub app. 3 goals, 6 assists) – played mainly as the defensive midfielder alongside Harry Arter in the double-pivot, and has good Premier League experience from his time at Norwich. Not likely to offer much of an attacking threat at the higher level.

Harry Arter (43 starts, 9 goals, 3 assists) – has been with the club since 2010 and has recently been called up to the Republic of Ireland senior squad. Has a good passing range and a knack of scoring from distance thanks to his cultured left foot. Shares some dead-ball duties with Matt Ritchie, but did pick up 12 yellow cards last term.

Marc Pugh (35 starts, 7 sub apps. 9 goals, 5 assists) – like Arter, has been with the club through the meteoric rise. A tricky winger whose attacking output was impressive last season, but may see less playing time should a new wide player be brought in over the summer.

Matt Ritchie (44 starts, 2 sub apps. 15 goals, 17 assists) – Bournemouth’s star man ticks a lot of boxes for Fantasy managers. Ritchie takes the vast majority of free-kicks and corners, and can score from long range while also timing his runs into the box perfectly. Capable with either foot and forms a good partnership with Simon Francis down the right flank. Ritchie made his Scotland debut in the 1-0 win against Northern Ireland in March and provided the assist for the winner. Named in the PFA Championship Team of the Season, he fired more shots and created more chances than any team-mate.

Dan Gosling (1 start, 17 sub apps. 2 assists) – only one start last season for the former Everton midfielder. Unlikely to feature very heavily in the Premier League.

Ryan Fraser (6 starts, 15 sub apps, 1 goal, 1 assist) – young Scottish winger who was used predominantly from the bench. Very quick and could develop further.

Eunan O’Kane (8 starts, 3 sub apps) – a capable defensive midfield player, but struggled for pitch time and looks to be a squad player for next season.

Yann Kermorgant (26 starts, 12 sub apps. 15 goals, 10 assists) – the former Charlton man was a great foil for Callum Wilson, providing a physical presence in attack. When he starts, Kermorgant is the Cherries’ principal penalty taker but, at 33, he is in the latter stages of his career now. Howe is expected to sign at least one new forward which may well limit his pitch time.

Junior Stanislas (6 starts, 7 sub apps. 1 goal) – signed on a free last summer, Stanislas has played under Howe before but looks likely to be no more than a back-up option.

Callum Wilson (45 starts, 20 goals, 7 assists) – was pivotal in the Championship winning season, with his pace terrorising defences. Wilson is an England under-21 international and looks to have plenty of improvement in him, given he is only 23. Third in line for penalties behind Kermorgant and Brett Pitman, he could move to the front of the queue if those two fail to make the starting XI.

Brett Pitman (18 starts, 16 sub apps. 13 goals, 2 assists) – in his second stint at the club after a three year spell at Bristol City, has an eye for goal, but scored many of his strikes as a substitute and could struggle to make an impact in the Premier League. Vied mainly with Kermorgant for the support role behind Wilson.

Tokelo Rantie (12 sub apps, 2 goals) – snapped up for a then club record of £2.5m in 2013, the South African has struggled to nail down a starting berth. Limited to a handful of sub appearances last time out, his season was further restricted due to injuries and ACoN duties.

Potential Targets

As mentioned, Howe is expected to make a few additions in the summer, but he has regularly emphasised the importance of the team spirit fostered over the last few years and the fact any new signings must compliment the current group:

“You can see from my track record that the guys who have performed so well for us this season will get an opportunity to perform at the next level. I don’t believe in wholesale changes in the close season, I don’t believe in not giving players a chance to show whether they are good enough. Ultimately they will have to take that opportunity but it was the same from League One to Championship – we stuck with the majority of the squad. Of course there will be subtle changes – there will be players coming in and players leaving – but the core group will remain the same.”

Again, that strategy sounds fairly familiar to what Leicester tried to do in the last two transfer windows, whereas Burnley stayed fairly prudent and QPR spent pretty lavishly, but failed to engender a willingness to play for each other.

The Bournemouth manager has already announced that six players have been released, including Ian Harte, while keeper Darryl Flahavan has expressed a desire to find first team football elsewhere.

Discussing his thoughts on the club’s transfer policy recently, the Cherries boss stated a desire to shop domestically as they embark on their debut season in the top tier of English football:

“Predominantly we will go British-based… In our situation going into a new league with so many unknowns we want dependable players that we know. I think the make-up of our squad will be British. That’s not to say we won’t look abroad and we have cast our net quite wide to try and find the best players for us.”

With Bournemouth’s season finishing just two weeks ago and with the Premier League still in full flow, there isn’t too much transfer speculation regarding incomings to the south coast club. Plenty of forwards have been linked with the Premier League new boys, with Sporting Braga striker Eder, Dimitar Berbatov, Jermain Defoe and Obafemi Martins all the subject of speculation in recent weeks. While there is nothing concrete on any of those names, it does appear likely that Howe will look to add more firepower to his squad.

One link that does seem to have some substance to it is a move for Birmingham youngster Demarai Gray. Bournemouth made multiple bids for the winger in January, but were unable to agree a fee. With just a year left on his contract, the 18-year-old could well depart St Andrews this summer, although the Cherries may have to beat off the likes of Liverpool to secure his services.

Reading midfielder Jem Karacan would fit the bill of “British-based players,” and the 26-year-old also has Premier League experience from his time at the Royals. Watford have have also been linked with Karacan, who would offer some much needed depth in the middle of the park for Bournemouth, with Andrew Surman and Harry Arter virtually ever present last season.

It does seem as if the Cherries could look raid some of the Championship clubs who failed to gain promotion, a policy that again worked for Leicester last summer when they signed Leonardo Ulloa from Brighton, or even going back to when Swansea brought in Danny Graham from Watford.

As the Bournemouth boss has admitted, though, some of the stories regarding new signings at this moment in time must be taken with a pinch of salt:

“We have had a lot of names thrown at us and there has been a lot of talk in the press, which is usually wide of the mark.”

*Many thanks also goes to site regular and Bournemouth fan Shipstontrev, whose thoughts on his team’s prospects helped with the planning of this article.

Its a brilliant idea. Mentally yeah and also get a good understanding of different tactical philosophies. When the youngens I coach get a bit older I'm gonna use it. (u7 so I'm hard pressed just getting them to not tackle each other for now)

Lot's of clubs..some you may never have heard of. The FA cup teams in East Lancashire was part and parcel of turning the game from a middle class sport to a working mans sport...This is one of the clubs but there were many others around Darwen, Accrington, Burnley and Blackburn that all contributed to the transition. This is Blackburn Olympic...

Bournemouth's promotion, has made predicting next season rotating pairs much easier. The logical combinations appear to be

    ARSENAL AND TOTTENHAM
    ASTON VILLA AND WEST BROM
    EVERTON AND LIVERPOOL
    MANCHESTER CITY AND MANCHESTER UNITED
    NEWCASTLE AND SUNDERLAND
    SOUTHAMPTON AND BOURNEMOUTH
    CRYSTAL PALACE AND WEST HAM
    CHELSEA AND WATFORD
    LEICESTER AND NORWICH
    STOKE AND SWANSEA

The bottom 4 are crock. they'll rotate in some phases for convenience but it wont be hard and fast. Chelsea still rotate with Fulham, Swansea with Cardiff, Norwich with Ipswich and so forth.

No, the PL fixtures are based on 10 "pure" rotation pairs home/away. The ones given above will probably be right although it could be Leicester/Stoke and Swansea/Norwich.

Chelsea, for example, will still rotate with Fulham but that will be arranged between the relevant leagues. For the PL fixtures they will almost certainly rotate with Watford.

This would be a good discussion. It seems the general consensus is you get the cheaper keepers for their save points, with CS a bonus. But I would logically expect them to get more save points away from home.

I'm glad to hear that our result has caused ripples in the international media and it's a good thing that it has reignited parliamentary debate in some countries where it may have fallen off the agenda.
Staunch Catholicism can be overcome. Even if he's your PM. The key to it over here was the avalanche of young voters that had never registered to vote...doing so in the final few weeks..and votingYES.
Hopefully the same can happen with you guys.
My wife has 2 gay cousins that over the last 15 years have become 2 of my very best friends.
For those two guys and their soon to be husbands I am most happy for. Love is love. Love is great. The more countries and governments that take our lead the better.

Indeed mate. Problem here is it won't go to referendum, it will be voted on in parliament and has failed there twice in the last decade because the liberals all vote the party line, no. There's pressure on Abbott to allow a conscience vote this time so we'll see.
Its ridiculous man over two thirds of the population are for it. Even the pm's sister is gay but I'm sure he's convinced she's off to help for eternity because of it. 🙄

Towing the party whip, Same everywhere. Constricts the real thinkers because they always have to bow to the fear of losing votes in a future election.
Ah well, if it doesn't happen soon for you guys , hopefully what happened here will ensure that it may happen elsewhere even if it takes another 5 or 10 years.
The sad thing is , is that there will be many more suicides and / or lives ruined through prejudice in the mean time..

Party whips undermine democracy. What chance do people have on voting for issues if a party whip forces their representative to vote the other way. It isn't democratic in any way shape or form.

yep democracy is decaying under our current system(s) no doubt about it. Very frustrating. There is ways to improve it a lot but all rely on revolution which clearly can't happen when we have it better than anyone in human history as is

Agree Flynnie. Prejudiced people will always be around and have their voices heard. A democratic platform provides that and rightfully so, even if their views are unpalatable.
But law changes and more importantly constitutional changes, which has happened here in Ireland, will ultimately change mindsets.
The important thing, in fact THE most important thing that has happened here is the fact that the children/ teenagers/ young voters have been engaged in this campaign...which at it's roots was essentially about equality.
If that means that those young people have been invigorated to vote or even express an opinion on such an important issue then it is nothing less than glorious. The fact that the referendum was passed is great, but the underlying ramifications for future voters is just as important. My great hope is that such prejudices will be eventually eased out of society through the democratic process and although clearly ignorances will remain that greater good will prevail through gradual change.
That's me done. Night all 🙂

Don't be fussy either. Factories are often the best way and a good laugh if they take on a bunch of students. My summer job at uni was packing buscuits for a shortbread firm. It was generally easier to stay at Uni and just try to increase the hours on my termtime job though. Do try hard though. The experience you get is invaluable when it comes to getting a proper job

It's like that in almost all semi-state, state bodies. My mate got sacked from DAA recently a couple of weeks after joining up, but it was incredibly strange because to his knowledge he did nothing wrong and no reason was given, also no emails were received by him despite inquiring , having family in the airport myself they said its most likely down to the increasing wage structure year on year plus the hours, the people already there just don't want new people in to take away their hours considering some of them are on like 20+ euro an hour. They really are mostly wankers working in those career paths.

THE JANUS APPRAISAL: 2. MANCHESTER CITY

I am in the process of writing a series of articles about next season's PL teams from a FPL perspective. These will include a look back on the season just gone and a look forward to 2015-16 - hence "Janus". The idea is to produce some items of interest in a quiet time on the site and to spark some informative discussion, especially in terms of comments from supporters of the various teams. These comments will then be integrated into a final article for the site. So thanks in advance for any contributions and apologies to those who think posts like this are too long to read, just skip over it if you do. 😕

Next in the series is the 2nd placed team, Manchester City.

    MANCHESTER CITY REVIEW

There are two outstanding things about City:

    1. They score goals. Lots of goals. 83 this season, 102 last season, 93 when they won the PL in 2011-12. Chelsea scored 73 in winning this season, that's the comparison.
    2. They get beaten too often. 7 times this season, 6 in winning last season, 5 when they won in 2011-12. Traditionally 4 defeats or less is the target for would-be champions. And arguably what gave Chelsea the edge this season was their ability not to be beaten - only 3 defeats and one of them after the title was done and dusted.

I don't think many would argue that in Sergio Aguero, City have the best striker in the PL. Personally I would go further - I think he's the best "pure" striker in the world. Ronaldo, Messi, Suarez all do a lot of their best work outside of the area - they are forwards. But Aguero lives and breathes in the penalty box (6-12 yards) - that is his killing ground.

    WEAKNESSES

Let's put aside the strengths temporarily - we all know them anyway. They revolve around attacking flair and the strengths of Aguero, Silva and Yaya (more last season than this). The weaknesses are maybe more interesting.

One element is defensive resilience. The strange thing is that City don't actually concede that many more goals than Chelsea's 32 this season. City conceded 38 in 2014-15, 37 in 13-14 and only 29 in 11-12. But where Chelsea seem to be able to refuse to concede in key games, City don't have that strength. 10 goals conceded in 6 games against the other top 4 teams in the season just gone tells its own story. Chelsea conceded 3 goals in the equivalent games.

Is this a mental thing or a tactical one? A bit of both I think. Pellegrini often talks about "attractive football", especially when touchy comparisons with Chelsea come up. It seems as if the mindset is to beat other teams by scoring lots of goals. But the intransigence of that position seems to be found wanting when against the best opponents. City won the PL despite losing 6 games last season but that is unusual and may have had something to do with the relative weakness of the competition.

As it stands, City are at a crossroads and for that reason assessing them for next season is not easy. Will Pellegrini stay? It looks as if he will and this appraisal is based on that assumption. A new manager - especially a "winning" manager like Ancelotti - would totally change the picture and probably City's tactical approach as well. In addition, the squad is ageing. Will Milner and Yaya stay? Who will come in? All these variables make for uncertainty, although with FFP being relaxed, City may be in a better position than they might have been.

    CITY PLAYERS - DEFENCE

As it stands it's hard to make a case for any City defenders as good FPL prospects for next season unless you bring one in for a run of "easy" games. Hart has the same number of save points as Courtois (who has played less games) and City keep less clean sheets. The same applies for the outfield defenders - players like Zabaleta and Kolarov can flatter to deceive because of attacking potential but City don't have a settled back four as Chelsea and Arsenal do and there is always rotation risk.

Kompany has shown that he can be a good FPL asset - 145 points in the title-winning 11-12 season. But that kind of form is in the past and in recent seasons he hasn't shown that level. The thing is that City defenders carry premium prices in the main but they don't perform with the reliability that a FPL manager really wants from that kind of investment.

    CITY PLAYERS - MIDFIELD

City have very good midfield assets but they mostly come with some kind of caveat. Fernando and Fernadinho play in the CM/DM position that FPL doesn't well reward. Navas consistently posts great stats for "chances created" but they seldom seem to translate into FPL points. Milner looks like he is leaving, Lampard certainly is.

The ones that FPL managers might most easily consider are Nasri, Toure and Silva. Nasri's 155 points in season 2013-14 show that he can be a good FPL option but over the last 8 seasons he has averaged only 2100 minutes per season (whether through rotation or injury), 30% less than players who start almost every game are managing. However, given an injury-free run and a regular starting position he could offer value if priced around 7.5.

For many, Toure's heroics in 2013-14 are still the stuff of legend. But his 241 FPL points that season look like a statistical outlier now. This season he has scored 134 points, very similar to what he managed from 2010 to 2013 (146, 139, 142 points). It looks like that's the norm, in which case he's overpriced unless he comes in around 8.0/8.5 next season (which seems unlikely).

That leaves the "little magician" that is Silva. He has had a stellar season, mainly because of scoring 12 goals - his assists are similar to previous seasons. But his overall returns this season are not so far in advance of what he has achieved in the past. He seems to be able to thrive in any formation, though when City play 4-2-3-1 and he has the #10 role it probably suits him best. At a probable price of around 9.5/10.0 next season he'll be one many will consider and some will think is essential. Unless there are big changes in the City midfield in the summer he'll certainly look the most attractive City midfield pick.

    CITY PLAYERS - STRIKER

This is where I may become a bit controversial. Research I did a couple of months ago suggests to me that Aguero's FPL value is very dependent on whether City are playing 4-2-3-1 or 4-2-2-2.

If you look at Aguero's goals in the season just gone, almost all of them are from 6-12 yards and central. When City play 4-2-3-1 with him at the point, that's where he is. Right in his killing ground. However when City play with Bony, especially, in what Pellegrini calls 4-2-2-2, Aguero drifts deeper and wider. He still gets (almost) as many shots away but many are from further out or from more acute angles. And this reflects in the amount of goals scored.

Aguero is such a good player that he is still a big danger. But not as big a danger. And at a probable price of 12.0 next season I would want to know he'll be playing where he is at his best. Put him there and he's essential, surely. Play him deeper in a 4-2-2-2 then perhaps not so much. Although it would be a brave call to leave him out.

Bony is the imponderable. He's a very good player and FPL option in his own right, especially if he's going to be a regular starter. And I can't think that Pellegrini/City bought him to be regularly benched. I think he's in front of Dzeko in the pecking order and if he's to be a regular starter and priced around 8.0/8.5 he could even turn out to be a better option than Aguero. There, I have said it. But surely Pellegrini wouldn't be that stubborn, would he?

I'm just doing some research and compiling some community articles.

But I do think that if City will be playing 4-2-3-1 then you have to have Aguero if fit, he's probably the best captain option in the game.

Unfortunately I think both Kun and Silva will be up for a price increase next season. At an absolute minimum Kun 12.5 and Silva 10.0. Maybe Kompany will be a bargain though if he's priced at around 6.0 and can regain his form.

Yep, 12.5 and 10.0 looks quite conceivable. Don't they divide this season's points by 20 as a starting point and then make adjustments for this season's finishing price, how many games lost to injury etc? That's what I have read anyway.

      Thanks Ruth, great read.

Would take a brave person to go without Aguero next season. But you're right about Bony definitely. Seems like Pellegrini sees him as a important part of his plans.

Hopefully we'll know more in preseason, if Dzeko or Jovetic leave.

And to your last question...yes, Pellegrini is stubborn - doesn't have a clue. we armchair managers know City's best formation is a 4-2-3-1, not sure how he can't see it.

    9. Carlos Kickaball
      • 9 Years

In defence I think that there two interlinked problems. Kompany and Zabaleta particularly like to rush out to close men down, which can leave space in behind; this may be exacerbated by another problem, which is a lack of a combative defensive midfielder, something City have missed since De Jong left. When it comes to the City defenders and picking, a lot depends on who is nailed on, and how many points they get going forward.

Silva I don't think will be worth it for 9.5m+, Agüero as a captain option would probably be worth it for 14.0m with an attacking manager like Pellegrini at the helm.

Isn't Fernando supposed to be that, CK? What do you think of him? How has his first season been?

I'd also be interested (knowing you are a City fan) in what you think may happen with Bony. Will he be a regular starter next season?

        1. Carlos Kickaball
          • 9 Years

I think that's the problem with Fernando, he hasn't made as much of an impact defensively as some would have liked, certainly not been terrible but he's no Matić or Nigel do Jong.

Bony is a good addition and will probably be the first choice to partner Agüero, but in FPL terms tactics and rotation may stop him from being nailed on.

The only issue ( not sure issue is the right word) with these is they don't take into account the signings which will happen (because obviously they haven't happened yet) and will have an affect on the team and the players we might choose from those teams.

I suppose that could just be another article down the line though.

Of course that's true. But my idea is that if I have a 'starting' appraisal it will be easier to assess the possible effects of ins and outs on that basis.

Once the window is in full swing the perspective offered by the season just gone will start to be lost.

      • 10 Years

Cheers Ruth, nice write up. It mainly cemented my own ideas but did bring back the notion of Nasri, who I think will be a great alternative to Silva if he gets consistent playing time.

Aguero will almost certainly be my default captain at the start of next season, but I must say the best "pure" striker in the world thing is tosh. It's Ronaldo by a mile. In recent seasons Ronaldo has redefined himself as the ultimate goal scoring machine and given up some of his flair play to be a master poacher. touch maps, shot maps and goal maps all point towards Ronaldo and Aguero having very very similar profiles. Have a look at these goal maps for the league this season, A is Ronaldo and B is Aguero and you'll see that Ronaldo lives more centrally and Aguero scores a surprising amount out wide.

      A) http://i.imgur.com/5Fuo2aD.png

      B) http://i.imgur.com/EU19XhF.png

I know my point isn't directly FPL related and Aguero is a world class striker in his own right, but Ronaldo he is not.

        • 9 Years

Interesting maps, the one I have seen for Aguero is even more centrally concentrated but it's a similar picture - almost every goal from inside the box, most from 6-12 yards and central.

As for Ronaldo - well maybe you are right. I tend to think of him as coming off the left wing as he did at United (and still does to a degree when playing alongside Benzema) but it's true that he has become more like a striker nowadays.

Let's agree that Aguero is one of the best strikers in the world then and leave it at that. 🙂

Ancelloti started to play him in a front 2 of the Real's 4-4-2 with Di Maria playing interior left.
He found a good balance back then.
And even when James/Isco were there…

But he could have lost both La Ligas (13/14 and 14/15) because of the lack of defensive consistency.

            I agree.

Do you plan to have Haz and Aguero TLs? Their inflated prices are going to disrupt the rest of the team.

Should starting prices be the same as the ending prices for the finishing season rather than starting from scratch?

No, in my opinion, some players end higher than what they may be worth on average, have to take into account improvement but not presume form will continue.

I think if you were to operate this system prices would need to be allowed to fluctuate more in order to reach a players market value. This should reward early adopters with bigger benefits and deter similar teams

You should see the Sportal pricing for that Cheeseoid. Phew!! You gotta be quick.

My TV end of season was 136 mill and nowhere near the top.

Not heard of Sportal. I can see that by trying to reflect market forces for players it could hinder the game for people who don't want to make their decisions early. I guess that would put some people off

I used to play sportal. Prices mainly go up and down based on average performance over last 3 games. There used to be a web page which predicted this. By about half way you could afford pretty much anybody if you played it right. Not a great format imo

Well they will start at .0 or .5 and don't always follow on. Maybe it depends on players arriving or leaving as to whether they place is more or less nailed as well.

I think for the good performing players this season, we could see a 0.5-1.0 price hike (except for Kane). Sanchez and Costa were perfectly priced imo. I don't see the dynamics in the Arsenal midfield changing (ie Sanchez the out and out premium option, Ozil + Caz + Ramsey similarly priced).

Sturridge, RVP. Coleman, Baines, Vert are the obvious premium options that will fall quite substantially.

Like Chelsea Dagger, i hope Kane gets priced at the 10mil range. Give some optionality for teams to pick between Costa, him and Sturridge.

So anywho, anyone know of some money leagues or ML's run by people on here? None of my friends here in Chile are into FF, so I won't lie and say it'd be great to actually have a ML rival this upcoming season 😆 Think I heard Demi' runs a ML but a not sure if it's exclusive or not, also LAWR which I'm pretty sure is invite only

Had no clue who any of those guests were, save for Lineker, who I have only become aware of in recent years due in part to my Prem League followship, so had to look them up to get the lowdown on all that.

Hey guys, this might be a bit late as I just came back from my grad trip to Bangkok. Anyways thanks so much for this wonderful season! I remember months ago my aim was to just halve my OR from the previous season (60k+) and it has totally been a whirlwind season, to hit the top 1k and to progress so far in the cups and LMS.

But all this won't be achievable without you guys, the DZers! I've learnt a lot from you guys and really appreciate all the help you guys have shown me throughout the whole season. Though I was not extremely regular on the site during to school commitments, the insights I obtained from this site has been the main reason of doing so well this season. And for that I thank all those who has been running this site and continue to keep up the good work Mark, Paul, Jonty and the others! 🙂

Also special mention to Innsie, Shifty, TM and the others (so many more) that has given me sound advice and has guided me through this season! It's good that all of you have also done well individually this season!

It's really amazing when you realize that this community is more than just about FPL. I learnt that from my recent trip to UK where there was so much help regarding my travels and even EPL tickets! It's really a wonderful community to belong in! 🙂

As this season tails to a conclusion, I hope to see most of the DZers next season! Soon we would start seeing all the RMT and the season will begin in a flash so good luck guys! And thanks! 🙂 This will really be the most memorable season I'll remember for all the positives! 🙂

Thanks man! Really appreciate it! You were so close to catching me right at the end! 🙂

I doubt I'll ever top my achievement this season, and most likely I've to play like a causal for the next season due to army commitments. But I'll still try my best to be active on this site if possible to catch up with ppl!

All the best for planning next season and cya around man!

For you experienced FPL players, is there a team composition strategy that you have found to be rather consistent over the years? Or does it change depending on various factors like BPS?

For example, with focus surely to be on building a team around CHE def + Sanchez + Haz + Aguero, how will you be thinking of striking a balance throughout the rest of the squad?

          Something like this perhaps?

          4.5 [4.0]
          7.0 5.5 4.5 [4.5 4.0]
          11.0 10.0 8.0 5.5 [4.5]
          13.0 8.0 6.0

Frankly I dont really bother too much with setting out a balanced team and jst get the players I want and try to find a good compromise. However, I may change that this year as I kinda like the idea of being able to change my team easier to fit must have players early on. It seems to have worked out well for a lot of players I know

yea having a team structure definitely helps alot imo Badger. allows you to hop around on bandwagons without destroying the balance of your team. ii'll definitely be sticking to a certain team composition at least early doors.

Think I will do the same. Of course that depends on prices for Aguero, Hazard etc. too lol

I'm hardly experienced with just 3 seasons under my belt now, but I think the key to your starting squad is flexibility and the ease at which you can transition players (or bandwagons) in and out of your team. This all depends on team structure. For example, the clear weak point in your template above is the 4th mid, it's very hard to find a reliable midfielder who you'll play every week at that price. Let's say a 7m mid becomes a standout option after a couple of weeks and your 5.5m mid keeps blanking, you'll need to find an extra 1.5m to be able to do the upgrade. Without touching your defence and the 'big 3', that means the likely option is downgrading your 2nd striker, and, forgetting this past season, having two 6m strikers up front can be awkward.

Of course it depends on prices and fixtures, but I think if the likes of Hazard, Sanchez and Aguero are all looking like must-haves then perhaps going without a Chelsea defender could be a good decision considering the impact that can have on the rest of your squad and the added flexibility that will give your team.

            1. Shifty
              • 10 Years

agree there Innsie. Flexibility and a stable structure is what I'll be aiming toward.

Finding that 4th mid and 2nd/3rd strikers will be key for the GW1 team. I would be willing to push the 4th mid to a 6.0 tops, but imo, the 4th mid sweet spot is between the 5.5-6.5 region. If a 7.0 + mid fires, then the 3rd mid should give way to accommodate that bandwagon. 7.0 is too rich for a 4th mid no?

If Chelsea continue next season like they did this season, there's every reason to go without Chelsea defender at the start. I'm pretty sure once the game is launched, every RMT will have Ivanovic. Would be interesting to see how many still have Ivanovic by the time that first deadline comes.

I agree with the flexibility part. Best to accept you'll be wrong about most things pre-season because there is no form to gauge. So stay flexible. It all depends on prices

I'm clearly not that experienced as you can tell but your plan sounds good tbh. I would want to stay clear of the Chelsea defense till they settled like last season. Your team would really depend on your bench folders in case of any emergencies, and it also allows you to change players easily.

Honestly speaking I think players like Alexis Hazard Aguero maybe Silva? are a must have for next season and with new signings there's bound to be another Kane or Austin that could perform well so the 6.0 slot would be filled up nicely.

For the GK slot I'm not too sure whether you will be able to get 2 playing gk for 8.5m. One thing I learnt from this season is to always have 2 goalkeepers ready as a freak injury could force you to take a hit if you're not prepared.

I always went the route of two 4.5 keepers who rotated. This year the pairing of Foster and Myhill at 8.5 served me so well i may look at the 4.5 keepers plus their 4.0 backups from the same team again

Things are looking quite good for a 6.0 striker at the moment with the promoted clubs quite attacking in general.

Some solid options in the Norwich team who have done the deed in the PL as well - Olsson and Redmond are two i'll be closely looking at. Wonder if Snodgrass would return to Norwich - not sure if he was sold or loaned to Hull.

on the keeper note, i started the season with a 4.5 + 4.0 (Krul + Elliot) and it worked well. Key is the 2 keepers should be from the same team. Foster + Myhill would have worked out for those who started the season with the duo. Think it's a viable strategy wrt to keepers but we shall see!

"I would want to stay clear of the Chelsea defense till they settled like last season."

Last time a Mourinho Chelsea were defending a PL title they kept clean sheets in their first six games of the season.

Similar in out look Shifty. Normally set up something like-

            4.5 (4.0)
            5.0 4.5 4.5 (4.5 4.0)
            11.0 10.0 8.0 5.5 (4.5)
            12.0 11.0 6.0

Leaves 1.0 ITB for flexibility on prices

Leaving money in the bank is quite an interesting play. If I were to start with money in the bank, 1m seems a good amount given the quick price changes in GW1. With 0.5 in the bank, those +0.1 changes could feck you over really quickly.

Sorry, i meant that 1.0 is there in case the 6.0 forward i want is 6.5 or the 5.5 option is 6.0. I will spend every penny on my starting 15!

Leaving .5 in the bank would be clever though. Say you have a 5.5 mid and another 5.5 mid gets on fire. At the same time your 6.0 striker is awful and another one at the same price is also on fire.

Without that .5 any price rise means a direct switch is not possible. The .5 would give you some wiggle room

Hey guys. Any keen runners in the DZ? Im doing the Spartan Beast Run in about 3 weeks time. For those that dont know it its basically a 20km obstacle course and frankly speaking it seems pretty intimidating especially with my current workout programme being all gym work and no running whatsoever.:D Though Im pretty fit, I like to think, Im not a long distance runner by any means. Any tips?

I haven't done marathons but I would agree that above 10km it becomes a battle with your mind.

You also need to do the miles because your legs have to get used to the movement for such a long period of time - not just the muscles but also the joints.

If you've done the five and the ground and obstacles are the same it shouldn't be major issue.
Just don't try and win it.
If it's army style assault course the same obstacles later in the race will take a lot more effort, try and watch how people who have done them before approach them.
Above all watch your feet, it ain't track running.

Enjoy it and good luck Sheikh.

Cheers mate good advice. Wont have any notions of winning it lol Even if I did its irrelevant. The 'elite' group go first in the morning. If you want to try and win it you have to sign up for that group.

Very worried about the obstacles later in the race alright but again if you dont do them its no t the end of the world. You just do a forfeit and pass them. Forfeit is 20burpee jumps I believe lol

I've run a few marathons albeit not recently. It sounds like the obstacles will be the biggest challenge. In my opinion there's a huge difference between 10k and 20k but if you're nervous I would say treat it with respect. Don't try and go too fast in the first 10 k, get to half way feeling fresh and then you've only got 10k left and you KNOW you can do 10k so you'll feel more confident.

Aim to run the second half faster than the first half. If you find with 3k left you've got plenty of energy that's the time to step up the pace. I guarantee you'll overtake plenty of people who've set of too fast and you'll have more fun. Good luck and enjoy it.
