The ScoutCast – Episode 163 – Champion

On Saturday afternoon, an unsuspecting couple moved into their new Singapore flat next door to a gentleman named Simon March. Twenty-four hours later, after being kept awake by solitary screams of frustration and joy, they were left wondering if they’d made a terrible error.

They needn’t have worried. What they were enduring was simply the extraordinary trials of the Fantasy Premier League’s leader, being tortured by the twists of the final day of the season, as Theo Walcott threatened to trample on his dreams.

As it happened, Walcott’s best efforts were to prove futile – Simon March claimed the FPL crown after spending 14 Gameweeks at the summit. However, it was far from plain sailing.

In tonight’s ScoutCast, Jonty and I talk to Simon and relieve last Sunday’s events and learn how Paul McShane and Sergio Aguero formed an unlikely alliance to steer him to victory.

If you’ve never listened to a ScoutCast before, I recommend you break that trend on this one occasion. It really is worthwhile listening to Simon’s tale to share just how it feels to claim the title on the very final day, whilst taking in his thoughts on they key strategies that helped him along the way.

As always, this episode was broadcast via Google Hangouts earlier this week. You can view the full version via the larger player below. For the edited audio version, you’ll need this link or the first player.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    NEXT YEAR:

    would it be that bad an idea if say;

a defender/GK was awarded 1 pt if keeping a cleanie at HT?

Because its the inverse of scoring a goal, to score a goal you only need to be good/lucky once in 90 mins. To keep a cleansheet you need to be good/lucky for the whole of that 90 mins.

Basically, I think that clean sheets / defender performances are slightly under valued by the current system.

Nothing worse than seeing your team with a magnificent score at 16:20 on a Saturday afternoon (UK), only for it to be crushed 25 minutes later.

The only change i think i would be in favour of is getting rid of negative points for own goals and giving them to players that concede a penalty

          Good lad 🙂

I think it's a bit ridiculous that players get penalised for own goals but not conceding penalties. I'd say around 80% of own goals are entirely unavoidable and have little or no blame attached. Completely the opposite is true when a penalty is conceded imo

Agreed. Another point is that the rest of the defense effectively get punished by losing their clean sheet through no fault of their own. Why should the guy whohad a sh1t game get the same points?

      2. the axolotl
        • 12 Years

nah, it's great that a player loses pts for own goals, but agree a PK conceder should also be dropped pts

Well i'm just thinking that it would be good if there was a way that defenders were awarded a little more to make them as worthy of a transfer as an attacker. they need a way of balancing the books i feel. and this would solve it. it's a max of 38 more pts a year which would not bring them close to the best attackers in terms of pts scored

      1. SuperDunny - Used to be goo…
        • 14 Years
        8 years, 11 months ago

Don't the price tags balance the books? Why do we have to get an equal spread of points around the pitch?

        1. the axolotl
          • 12 Years
          8 years, 11 months ago

yeah, i'm not saying the current system is that bad, but, when you are playing the game, you get your defenders sorted and then...., don't think about them again if you can help it, whereas you need to constantly juggle mids/strikers.

i think it would add more chance/skill/ if defenders were more worthy of consideration

Ive suggested points for a 45 min cleansheet before. Makes a lot of sense if you ask me. It is a game of two halves.....

I've posted in favour of it before.(60 mins gets a single pt that's kept even if they conceded after that)...It's a bigger step than it looks at face value because so many teams manage to get to that point. The effect would be to bring defenders closer to parity with mids and fwds.

If defenders received more points we would all be playing 5 2 3
Also if they received more points they would cost more

          Okayyyy... 😉

Nice to see Dufflinks admit to how much effort goes into being competitive in FPL, and how much it means (such as when Aguero scored) as opposed to shrugging it off and playing it down. Think we can all relate to that.

As you guys point out its difficult to know what to make of it. Obviously a massive amount of luck is needed to win, and when everything is going right you dont need to make transfers.
He made some errors with team construction at the start of the season but was lucky enough to blast his way out of it regardless, many wouldnt have been so lucky

I guess you'll be hoping for a season when you are "lucky" enough to make the kind of errors Dufflinks did, right?

I just beat your first season score in my first season. Next time I'll beat your 2nd season score in my 2nd season. Seems quite easy so far. 🙂

With Ancelotti (who will probably end up at AC Milan again) taking a year out because of his operation and Pep saying he'll be at Bayern, who will City appoint?

I don't know if Klopp would go there given his traditional style of management. Another year for Manuel Pele?

Though it would be worth noting that Klopp's record suggests he leaves a smaller club for a bigger club. So City not out of the question, but I think Pep or Ancelotti more likely.

Any of you think the current series of Game of thrones has dropped the standard a little? Seems to have lost something, its just driifting now.

Madmen was th same , firt three or so series were great but it went on too long, never even bothered watching this last series to the finish

I completely agree. the pacing is off. Seems theyre padding it out a bit and not much is really happening, but maybe this is the way the book goes and all these events are prob important for the plot.

A Pan European breakaway league is being talked about by a number of clubs, it could happen in 10 or more years, that would ruin UEFA,I think the structures of football will become minor things when football transitions entirely to a commercial oriented business.

I'm inclined to agree, some journalists seem to run Pool stuff specifically for views/purchases.

For example, I believe the Daily Mirror is running one saying:

Klopp: "I want to manage Liverpool"

The following article has no such quote from Klopp, in fact the only quote is him saying he has had no offers and that he doesn't believe he'll take a sabbatical.

I know all papers do this, but I wonder if they're targeting Pool fans due to the current situation (which I guess might make sense from a business perspective).

Review first, transfers later, possibly will sell before they buy imo.

Aye, seems to be currently targeted quite heavily at Pool at the moment (I only day this as I know a few involved in the area). You're spot on, review first.

i wonder how the UK secured the 1966 world cup?

i'm purely wondering, i have no idea what happened. but i'd imagine, people for qatar and russia are saying that this is just the way these things are, i.e you have to bribe to get the prize. south african and Brazilian WC already implicated, it's likely endemic

I imagine England had pretty much zero opposition to hosting in 1966, not many countries had the facilities, infrastructure or finances to host the tournament. There was certainly nothing like the bidding wars that go on nowadays

Considering Benteke is a player that relies on the system to suit him, he would be a disaster for us, especially if the Brodge was still in charge, and that's not considering he's as much made of glass as Sturridge.

Takes more than a DOF, Berb. I agree, in this situation it may be correct, but more needs to be done. For example, Brenda's desire to fall out with players, or the club's desire to restrict wages.

              It is a shame tbh.

              1. Licky

                8 years, 11 months ago

I think the owners will pay high wages happily for the most part, its all down to the number of average players on wages they don't deserve, once the squad is cut down to 25-30 or so, hopefully closer to 25 pre transfers we can focus on 3 top quality players, not likely though, and I can see Allen and Skrtel staying of the ones that need to go. *sigh*

Yeah, hard for them to cut down on players when a number who need to go were just signed. I'm not sure on the wages front, seems that once it rises to over £100k they get a little twitchy. Which obviously isn't ideal. As you say, if they cut the dead wood they'd have no problem.

                  1. Licky

Indeed, my feeling isn't so much they won't pay top wages, just there's an overall cap.

A remake wouldn't work, but cropping, remastering and upscaling the original (and Fawlty Towers) has potential

Absolutely despicable. It will be difficult to support this world cup with such issues in mind.

4,000 lives is not worth mine, or anyone's pleasure of watching the world cup.

This is twice as many troops killed in Afghanistan, so certainly gives a perspective of the working conditions these people must be facing!

SCOUT PICKS CHALLENGE - END OF SEASON RESULTS

Apologies ladies & gentlemen - I just realised I'd finished the results but not yet posted them! But never fear - ocprodigy is here!

And on this final gameweek, these guys had their say...

    1st - Arvin-ation (64pts)
    2nd - Milanista (59pts)
    3rd - PGR (54pts)

Big round of applause - it is also worth saying Pundit of Punts came a very close 4th with 51 points! The FFS Scout Picks + Differentials unfortunately scored 66 points - which meant once again no bonus points!

    Now the Scouts had claimed their 1st place prize, which left competition for 2nd and 3rd down to the wire instead. It was tense, and a lot of players came very close. There was some disruption in the top 3, and we finish as below;

    *************** WINNER - FFS Scout ***************

    with Mookie trailing on 16pts. Milanista made a late jump to get himself in on 3rd place, and as such we have Milanista, Walsh and Sticky Mockwell all finishing 3rd on 12 pts! The final table is;

    1st - FFS Scout (22pts)
    2nd - Mookie (16pts)
    3rd - Milanista, Walsh & Sticky Mockwell (12pts)

    And that's your lot folks!

It's been a pleasure, and I look forward to starting this again at gameweek 2 of the next season! Some things to look out for - it's likely the points structure will change slightly to incorporate the number of players who enter week on week (i.e. more player entries, more players receiving points) to spice the game up a bit more. Also a new spreadsheet format provided by Billy Gilmore will be implemented (FINALLY!)

    Good Evening Chaps

I think you shouldn't get clean sheet points until the match is complete. It is annoying when a late goal goes in and your score is hit negatively.

Btw search doesn't work on the app for me but if you search chanpynwa on chess.com and click the link to my profile you can send me a turn by turn challenge. Alternatively if you have time I'll be on the pc in about an hour and can play a live game.

Stop being stubborn. I didn't get Kane until GW32. I kept thinking I was being clever each GW by getting Gomis, Benteke, Bony.. whoever..
It didn't work. As obvious as it may sound, a high scoring cheap player like Kane (or Michu, Adam etc) in seasons past simply can't be ignored purely because of the value element. It frres up so much cash to use elsewhere whilst leaving the over-performing cheapie in there mopping up the points..everyone had him so you're not losing out but others aren't gaining on you either.
It was the same with Ramsey and Yaya the year before. Although neither were as cheap as Kane, both turned out to be obvious choices that I ignored also through stubbornness
Never owned Ramsey and only got Yaya in for GW30 ( DGW hatrick (c) iirc )

      2) no more than 2 players in any rotation scheme

Give myself early flexibility across the squad by having a mix of prices and not too much bargain basement, keeping 0.5 itb so I don't get snookered by an early price drop.

Don't try and be too clever especially with locked and loaded squad players like 5th mfs, defence and gk as you end up getting stuck with them for too long e.g I got Moses on WC to cover one of the blank fixtures and ended up stuck with him for ages with no ft to spare

Im prob gonna start off with a more balanced team with money split def, mids, att. It seems a smarter way to go as GW1 is a bit of a lottery and easier to get on the bandwagons.

Big players like Aguero may not deliver every week but I will still get them and stick the armband on then. You'll be glad you did when they inevitably go crazy.

I will def be trying my best to stack up on DGW options even the weaker teams proved that having 2 games is a major plus.

Finally, I will try not to get stuck in a rut and let my team go stale. I held on to players and the template too long worrying that going without those players might cost me and in the end, grinding out average scores each week wasnt very helpful in the latter stages of the game. Need to freshen things up at times.

Looking back, I could/should have used some earlier FTs on defense. Focused alot of early FTs on the front 8 and was hampered by my defence until around GW10 when I started using a few FTs at the back.

Meanwhile, i think that piece you wrote on 'Biases' should be highlighted again - very good post that.

Nothing much will change. Will be more careful with having nailed on reliable defenders at the start of the season and won't underestimate teams fighting relegation who have form/fixtures/DGW. Leicester killed my end game.

Playing for more cash and probably playing sky too. I might as well invest something tangible i.e. cash if I'm already investing so much time. Also I'm probably outsourcing 90% of my decision making to the Scout RMT machine. I simmed optimising it over the course of this season and finished top 5K.

Making transfers early in the week to catch price rises, prevent drops and avoid overcomplications. Lost countless points this year being patient; binning Haz at last minute, binning Sanchez and striker for Defoe and Walcott (for -4) when we had teamsheets - never again. Will try to save transfers and do double transfers every 2nd week if required.

lippy I don't cheat lol what is the point in even playing if ya gonna do that? I'd much rather a 20 or 30 minute live game because I really struggle stopping myself from thinking about the position too long with fast chess. I lose on time to literally every one even players I can beat easily in a long so against you it will be pointless. I'll have a crack if you insist though but I don't cheat regardless kinda insulted you would think so.
