Team of the Season – Ryan Bertrand

Having started the 2013/14 campaign at Chelsea, Ryan Bertrand would only make one appearance for the Blues before moving on loan to Aston Villa in the January transfer window. The defender made 16 starts for Paul Lambert’s struggling side, registering only three shut-outs.

Before the beginning of last term, Bertrand would find himself on the move once more, with Southampton signing the left-back on a season-long loan. The Saints had kept 15 clean sheets in the previous campaign, so Bertrand was immediately thrust into the Fantasy limelight, priced at just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) as the season got under way.

Despite losing Luke Shaw, Dejan Lovren and Calum Chambers, Southampton’s defensive unit once again delivered for Fantasy managers under new boss Ronald Koeman, with new recruits Fraser Forster and Toby Alderweireld, along with Bertrand, helping the Saints register 15 shut-outs once again – a total bettered by only Chelsea (17) and West Brom (16).

Southampton conceded 33 goals last term, helping them to the second best defensive record in the league, with champions Chelsea letting in just 32. Bertrand finished the season as the fifth highest scoring defender in FPL with 140 points, considerably more than he had totalled across his four previous years. In January, Southampton made Bertrand’s loan move permanent, with the left-back joining for £10m on a four-and-a-half year deal.

THE STATISTICS

It took little time for Koeman to stamp his mark on the Saints’ new-look backline, with his side keeping three clean sheets in their first five matches, before registering four consecutive shut-outs between Gameweek 8 and 11.

After such a fine start to the season, the Saints struggled to maintain their early resilience, though they did manage eight more shut-outs by the middle of April following a 2-0 win against Hull in Gameweek 32. That was to be their final clean sheet of the season though, with 11 goals conceded in their final six matches.

Bertrand benefitted from the revamped Bonus Points System, which rewarded attacking full-backs more this season, picking up 13 bonus points. That’s less than team-mates Jose Fonte (16) and Nathaniel Clyne (15), although Bertrand did miss two of Southampton’s clean sheets due to a three-match suspension following his red card against Swansea in Gameweek 23. The left-back scored twice and provided three assists last season, highlighting his attacking prowess.

THE PROSPECTS

Bertrand finished the season priced at 5.8 in FPL, having peaked at 5.9 during the final month of the campaign. Given that Fonte started last season valued at 5.5 after Southampton kept 15 clean sheets in 2013/14, we can expect Bertrand to be priced at a minimum of 5.5, with a hike to 6.0 more than possible.

The left-back averaged 4.1 points per appearance, the same as Clyne, with Fonte (3.8) managing slightly less, so it would seem more than likely that all three will find themselves in the same price bracket next time around. That is, of course, if Clyne remains at St Mary’s, with the England international heavily linked with a move away from the south-coast club with just a year left on his contract.

With Toby Alderweireld uncertain to return to Southampton following his season-long loan, Koeman will have to bring in some new faces in defence. Having recruited so well last summer, the chances of the Southampton rearguard being strong once again next season look high, though.

Of Saints’ 15 clean sheets, 11 came at home – a tally only matched by Chelsea – with eight of those against sides in the bottom half of the league. Delivering in plum home fixtures is a huge plus for any Fantasy prospect, although the Saints’ inability to pick up defensive returns on the road is a concern, given that a price hike is on the cards. Their total of four away shut-outs was on a par with Leicester and Hull, for example, and half the number delivered by West Brom.

As mentioned in the Nathaniel Clyne article, our assessment of Southampton’s defence may well depend on Koeman’s choice of keeper in the continued absence of Fraser Forster. Both Kelvin Davis and Paulo Gazzaniga will undoubtedly be cheaper than the likes of Bertrand and if either can nail down a role as the Saints’ temporary number one for the first few months of the season, they may well prove a far more popular pick as we look to save on budget at the back.

Coleman got 180 points last season - a pretty significant jump on Clyne/Bertrand's 142/140.

I think they'll probably come in at 6, though 6.5 isn't out of the question I suppose.

@Jonty - looking forward to the article on the HOF top 10

On a similar note, are there any plans to invite any of them onto the Scoutcast?

I enjoy hearing from people currently right at the top of the pile but (and) personally I would love to hear from those who do it year after year, to hear how they do it.

I would like a "Legends" series of Scoutcasts.

That's a great idea. I think it would be great to have some of the top ten on the show....as I was writing about them it was just incredible how consistent they are. Mulitiple top 100 finishes takes some doing. Some of them got a top 50 FPL rank in their first season. Just remarkable.

I'm with you. I can't believe how willingly folk are to condone corruption by willingly accepting it and embracing it by way of participation. Corruption only thrives because nobody does anything about it.

I mean a one week blip of points. If they do it over consecutive weeks that's form.

An example wuould be when Lallana scored a brace and people brought him in but he never did it agian..

OK, yeah. Although there's always a balance between that and being late onto a genuine FPL game-changer like Kane this year, Ramsey / Yaya last season, etc

This is, I think, arguably the hardest thing in FPL. There is a real trick to spotting the difference between a Kane and a Ulloa/Berahino.

I've always found this strange advice, I think the importance of form is a bit of an old wives' tale constant perpetuated by even good managers.

Form in terms of points scored is not particularly a good predictor of future returns anyway, if you've ever looked at the correlation of form of an individual player and his points scored that week, you'll realise it's nonsense. A longer look at a players general performance is much better.

Fixtures matters a little, but not loads for attacking players, just consider what teams Kane, Sigurðsson, Sánchez... really all players have scored against this season, it's really a mix.

"A longer look at a players general performance is much better."

Yes, yes, yes. FPL points scored in any week are not "form", they are happenstance. You need to understand why the FPL points were scored to measure whether the trend is likely to continue or is just a freak outlier. Form is what the player and his team are doing on the pitch, not how well that translates into FPL points over a short sequence of games.

Benteke, at one point, had 10 goals from 13 shots on target. He isn't that good - no player is that good. But I saw people taking hits to get him in, captaining him and then complaining that he had "trolled" them when he didn't continue to produce that impossible level of return.

      Just one piece of advice?

Mistakes happen. Dont be kicking yourself too much for getting in the wrong player or avoiding a key player. Dont go knee-jerking and chasing lost points or take massive hits to 'fix things'. just dust yourself down and prepare as best you can for the next GW

Pick the best player in the game and captain them. (Newbies seem to be too easily put off by astronomical prices - perhaps because it forces them to buy squad players they've never heard of.)

I would advise someone to actually avoid this place at first. Just play it & enjoy it for a while then when you start to get the hang of it & you want to push on to the next lvl then join & analyse every tiny little detail. Sometimes it's good to learn by yourself wihtout having your decisions constantly influenced by other people. Just my 2cents.

Crikey, only one piece of advice! If this person really is a newbie I don't think one piece of advice will take them very far, and I don't even consider FPL a particularly complex game, once you have a bit of common sense and the advice on these forums I think anyone could do great. If we assume they've read and know the rules:

      1) Pick your squad in the knowledge that you have to bench 4 players every week, keep most of the money in your starting 11. Don't spread the money too evenly, or all in one position like two premium keepers, and give yourself lots of benching dilemmas, and as a result lots of money regularly on the bench and a cheaper playing team than others.

      2) Rotate some defenders for fixtures (and possibly keepers), looking for good fixture rotations, but generally do not rotate attackers. Cheap defenders that can score points are available, results are much more linked to team performance, and vary more with fixtures.

      3) Generally always try and field as many attacking players (mids and forwards) as possible. Essentially play 3 at the back.

      4) Don't take lots of hits, or make too many sideways transfers, rolling a transfer can avoid you a hit in the future. Most players you buy won't have an expected score of 4 more than the player you take out, and some don't even have an expected score of 4.

      5) Look out for double game weeks, and favourable fixture runs, doing some advanced planning.

      6) Don't knee-jerk and over focus on recent points scored, if a player is actually has good points potential, they'll come good; if a player is not so great they won't keep it up.

      7) Generally make transfers as late as is reasonably possible. Watch price change prediction sites, and only really make them earlier to catch price rises and avoid drops, though this become less important as the season goes on (as you'll have less time to use any profits).

      8) Keep up to date with selection, set piece taking, injury and other relevant news.

      9) Look at community sites to see what other FPL managers are saying, you'll pick up lots.

      10) Don't stick to dogmatically to rules! You have to be pragmatic.

My major one piece of advice would be lose your prejudices if you wanna compete, so easy to ignore certain players because of the team they play for or have played against. Seperate fantasy football from your love of real football and you will do a better.

ps always hit confirm when you play your wildcard 😆

Yes that would definitely be a good one to add to the list. 🙂

I guess I had not assumed that it would get in the way, but you're right for most it does at least to some extent, and to some it's massive.

Good list, matches some of mine below before I read yours.

I would disagree with (3) though, I'm not convinced that a FPL team can't successfully be set up to play 4-4-2 or 4-3-3.

          1. Carlos Kickaball
            • 9 Years
            8 years, 11 months ago

            Thanks.

I agree you could play 4 at the back sometimes, but it would depend on the price list and attacking options, I actually fielded 4 at the back in week 1 which worked great as it meant when Ben Davies didn't play I got Sigurðsson off the bench. 😆

I think 3 at the bank has generally shown itself to be pretty solid. As I said in (10) "Don't stick to dogmatically to rules! You have to be pragmatic." 😀

      watching football becomes more frustrating ! wanting rivals to score and keep clean sheets, when u normally dont want them to, or even your own team conceding because your rival has their def in {of course makin sure your team are a couple of goals to the good ! }
on more serious note, just enjoy it, have fun in a ml against your mates, enjoy the banter,an learn from your experiences

      1. Learn about how best to structure a squad for FPL, especially if you haven't played with a 15 man squad before.
      2. Don't be afraid to experiment and treat your 1st season as a learning process. There is no point just copying everyone else without understanding why.
      3. Research, research, research. The more you know about players, teams, tactics and stats the more informed your decisions will be.
      4. Later in the season there will be double gameweeks. Don't disregard them. 😕
      5. Captain choices are important. Pick the player voted top of the FFS captain poll as captain unless you have a good reason to do otherwise but don't just play hunches.

Easy. I've gotten close to 40 people in my town to play/join my local leagues. I get this question often.

If they want to play fantasy it means they have an interest and that interest is usually in a specific club or player(s).

Always my advise to them is if you want to do well you'll have to be objective. Just because you like so and so or like this club doesn't mean they're good fantasy assets. Course every spurs and Liverpool fan who joins automatically pick up 3 of their squads players and end up doing poorly, without fail...

Look for low risk differentials to get ahead. For example, WBA defenders were relatively cheap and provided a reasonable return of clean sheets. If you had put three defenders in since Tony Pulis, you would have ten clean sheets on your hands and a boost in rankings.

I'm probably the only poster you should listen to really with this sort of thing.

he seems to be championing transparency which we desperately need in FIFA (called for them to publish the Garcia report). His manifesto is also routed in human rights, integrity and equality.

In reality, we know very little but I am more likely to trust the opinions of people within UEFA and the likes of David Gill than those embedded within the corrupt system of the past.

FIFA is a disgrace. Period. In any other business the president/CEO would be out the door for overseeing corruption, bribery and racketeering. The 3 possible scenarios are

      1) Blatter knew nothing about it all and is therefore grossly incompetent. Its hardly as if we are talking about people at the foot of the organisation, those accused are vice presidents and mus surely be reporting to Blatter regularly!

      2) Blatter knew about it but turned a blind eye

      3) Blatter is knee deep in the thick of it and the FBI will be knocking down his door soon

Regardless of which of the above is true, he should still be out.

Unfortunately, the people voting in this election are the people who have directly benefited from such corruption. So why would they vote for that corrupt system to change?

I like football, so much so I even play a fantasy game online and sort of chat to other people about on a website. I was born in and live in the country that created football, England.
I too am not Sepp Blatter.

Vote Horse for the FIFA Presidency.

    Anyone else got a case?

Paul Lambert pedalling himself for a job on SSN. What a dull bloke he is, I just can not see how he could possibly ever inspire players to play above and beyond their norm. He's a shocker.

    little experiment

add up the total points you would have achieved with your gameweek 1 team if left untouched and compare to overall. work out how many points your managing skill and changes you made earned you

    gw1 team : 1369 points
    overall : 2162

    difference of 793 points

    1. JÆKS ⭐
      • 9 Years
      8 years, 11 months ago

It's not all managing skill tbh, let's say you had Costa as your captain in your first team. This would mean you would still have him during the matches he was injured, and he would also be your captain during those games. It's hard to compare if you can't change your captain choice in 1 condition, but you can in the other one.

I think Saints great defence has depended very much on Schneiderlin. When he was out injured in the end of the season, they were not very good defensively. If he is sold to Arsenal or someone else, I will not have the same faith in Saints defenders. Anyone agree?

Been hearing the same rumours lately. But I can see your point, not sure if Clyne and Toby will stay. And all the other defenders will probably get a higher price tag this year so I might stay away from Saints defence this year.

the old gerrymandering eh. Its shocking in the US.
I reckon scrap election all together and govern by lot. Like jury duty you could randomly select a couple hundred citizens from different demographics and their job for the next year is to be advised by experts on the issues of the day and then vote on them. Rotate every year. Low IQ or criminal record etc rules you out. What decays democracy is the thirst for power so why not remove the capability to hold onto power completely?
Or the swiss style where citizens can remove members of parliament by petition and can have referendums on loads of stuff

If Arsenal win the cup, as posted above no Europa for Saints. Will make me very wary of Liverpool and Spurs next season. Kane will be too dear anyway, and there isn't a lot else to pick from Spurs or scouse.

In my head I all ready have Ivanovic/Smalling/West Brom/Saints at the back, maybe with double Sunderland keepers as their score this year combined would have topped the rankings. Can't see past Aguero/Hazard/Sanchez either. Then fill in the gaps. Matt Richie maybe as an early punt depending on fixtures. Depay maybe. Benteke at Utd for 8.5m would be gold!

Spurs had Europa this year and Kane was rested in the large. I feel Saints will suffer however if they play a strong line up just like Everton who has similar squad depth.

Got to be Bony. I have the sense of burning bridges between Pell and those other two...especially Dzeko.

    Hi all,

Does anybody have the link to the website that gives you a full review of your FPL season? It was a hot topic recently but I can't find it now.

    Cheers,
