Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Yannick Bolasie

In 2013/14, Yannick Bolasie’s fleet-footed trickery may have caught the eye but, with just four assists to his name, it’s fair to say that the Crystal Palace flier struggled to translate his displays into tangible returns. Bolasie remained a somewhat peripheral figure throughout the first half of last season, before Alan Pardew’s arrival at the club harnessed the winger’s unique talents to greater effect, resulting in a significant improvement in his Fantasy prospects.

Ahead of the new campaign, Bolasie will be considered as a real prospect to sit alongside midfield heavy-hitters. An unpredictable but potentially explosive mid-price asset, the Eagles’ “magic man” could easily justify the gamble. Here’s why…

Key Factors

  • Pardew’s appointment at Selhurst Park marked a distinct transformation in Palace’s playing style. The former Newcastle United boss released the shackles from their wingers, placing a greater emphasis on delivering crosses to the lone striker and midfield runners. This shift in approach was epitomised by the fact that Leicester City (470) were the only outfit to attempt more crosses than Palace (444) from the point that Pardew took the helm in Gameweek 21. Only five teams tallied more goals than Palace (27) during that period, while the Eagles ranked joint-third – behind only Manchester City and Arsenal – with regards to shots inside the box, heightening Bolasie’s attacking prospects.
  •

  • Bolasie made great strides on the productivity front in 2014/15. The DR Congo international recorded an impressive four goals and ranked joint-second, behind Cesc Fabregas (18), in terms of assists (12). Exploring his goal threat in greater detail, Bolasie upped the frequency of his efforts from 44 minutes to 41.9 minutes in 2014/15. He subsequently placed tenth among midfielders for total attempts (69), which was just three shy of Eden Hazard’s tally and three more than David Silva. What’s holding him back is a pitiful 5.8% goal conversion rate which, if improved upon, could make him a mid-price powerhouse. Nonetheless, Bolasie also improved from a creative standpoint, executing a key pass every 64.2 minutes in 2014/15, as compared to every 84.4 minutes in the previous season.
  •

  • Bolasie’s out-of-positon potential further augments his appeal and will perhaps persuade some Fantasy managers to choose him over team-mate Jason Puncheon. Pardew fielded the Rushden & Diamonds academy product centrally – as a support/lone striker or a false nine – at choice moments throughout the season. In fact, his 24-point haul against Sunderland – courtesy of a hat-trick and an assist – was the product of a central role, while Pardew wasn’t afraid to deploy Bolasie up front against Chelsea and Liverpool in Gameweeks 35 and 37 respectively.
  •

  • Bolasie was valued at 5.5 at the start of the last campaign and is in line for price rise to the 6.5–7.5 mark, having contributed to 16 of Palace’s 47 goals. Taking the season as a whole, Bolasie carded a points per game average (ppg) of 3.9, yet comparing this metric under the tenures of Pardew (4.9 ppg) and Warnock (3.1 ppg) better exposes his evolution as a Fantasy asset. The Lyon-born wide man contributed to 10 of the Eagles’ 21 goals upon his return from the African Cup of Nations, highlighting his focal role in their attack.
  •

  • A firm favourite of Pardew’s, Bolasie position as a starter appears to be under little threat. The Palace head coach feels that the winger will attract a host of suitors if he can improve his finishing, given that Bolasie’s goal output doesn’t yet do justice to his spellbinding build-up play:

“He needs to find the end product and he’ll work hard on that next year. We might have a problem next year if he really starts banging them in. The thorn in his side is actual goals. Just on this season, it would be a mistake for a top club to get him because I don’t think he’s ready. But he will be ready in maybe a year or so when he’s got over that final hurdle. Then there will be no stopping him. He’s a fantastic boy and a fantastic talent. I love him to bits. I call him my “magic man”.

Lucy as you're here (for a while it seems) and i didn't quite catch you a few pages back...

How nailed is Mane? I seem to have the opinion that he was quite in and out of the team last year, which was maybe OK at 6.0m but wouldn't be at 7/8m. Was it only through discipline and the AFCON that he didn't play, or were there other spells too?

I ask this because it seems a lot of people are backing him this year, and even the usual Europa League curse isn't putting people off. I'd be concerned for his minutes with rotation and some new additions.

Ronnie doesn't like using him when he's been on international duty with Senegal. He invariably missed the weekends after travelling. So there's a warning.

Rotation with the EL is an inevitability. And that puts me off from putting him at the beginning. That being said, J-Rod will be eased back in and Juanmi will need to adapt. So he may do well for minutes at the beginning of the season, particularly when Elia and Djuricic won't be there to detract from game time. I think it's worth monitoring our recruitment over the summer. 🙂

Ah OK, thanks for the info. I thought there were a few more that seem to have gone under the radar!

I worry he was probably priced slightly under what he should've been last year (especially while playing through the middle), but that this will be adjusted this year and he won't actually be worth the 7.5/8m if he comes in that high.

Yeah, I'm really unsure on him. Maybe ask me again later on? 😀

I fear if I put him in my team, it'll detract from me fully appreciating him as a Saints fan...

Is there a rightly rated young player in today's football?

Whenever I see a post/opinion about any of them, I see the words 'underrated' or 'overrated' always associated with them. Sometimes both terms used by two different people on the same player.

95% of people on here rated Henderson as better, 95% didn't have him in their preferred England lineups before the WC, some said he shouldn't be in the squad. 6 months ago, on discussion about him, not one person said one positive thing about him.

These are the same people who are writing off Sterling, and the same people who will make sweeping conclusions based entirely off recent form. It's Metro level journalism.

I remember for a long time there was a comparison image going around of Wilshere v Cleverley, as if there was any doubt who was better. Glad that's disappeared now. Henderson could be preferred because at least he plays a lot, so is more often in the public consciousness.

Everyone has always known that, on potential, Wilshere could be far, far better than Henderson. The issues were his injuries, and the fact that his development and stalled.

The trouble is, with the English ones specifically, that we have so little cause for optimism that we over-hype everyone. Barkley managed to score goals with his left and right foot in the same game v Norwich and all of a sudden he was Gazza. We need someone to pin our hopes on so we try with anyone that turns up unexpectedly. Wilshere, Cleverley, Alan Smith, David Bentley, etc etc.

It's not just English players though. Every decent new Argentinian is the new Messi, Spain have had their lot with Bojan an Deuelfeou the next big thing, I'm sure other countries are the same.

I'm not based in Argentina though, and The Sun doesn't tend to care too much if John Guidetti is going to be the next Zlatan.

I am aware that everyone is dubbed the new someone; I was just helping to explain why players become over-rated.

This is true, it's English players where I'm most sceptical, EVERYONE is hyped up to ridiculous levels. As an Everton fan, our "great English hopes" include Cadamarteri, Michael Branch, Francis Jeffers, Rodwell and now Barkley. Rooney was the exception, and Barkley has potential, but the hype around him last year was ludicrous; he was clearly nowhere near the finished product.

It may cause me to be too critical of players like Sterling, but we as a nation need to calm down. Jack Grealish has been built up and knocked down already within the space of a month.

I listen to an Irish podcast now that my regulars have disappeared and they are obsessed with Grealish. I didn't see much of Villa last year, and i know they have a smaller pool than us to get excited about, but an awful lot is being made of a kid that has started a single digit number of Premier League games.

If the trend continues, players will be getting media-hyped based on training sessions alone.

To be honest, I stick to a rule of not believing the hype surrounding young players. A lot can happen over the few seasons, and you never really know what a player's mentality/attitude is like. As well as that, especially if they're from smaller foreign leagues, their talent can be exaggerated. There are many examples of this: Bojan who I really was a huge supporter of, broke all sorts of records in the Barcelona academy but is only now getting himself on track at Stoke. Deulofeu another example. I found Eriksen was overhyped (not to say he isn't good, but some folks on here exaggerated) etc.

Essentially, I have learned to not bother with the hype. If they really are top level, it will become apparent in time.

I've seen Otamendi in La Liga but not Hummels in the Bundesliga, more of Hummels for Germany and in Europe.

I think Otamendi is a more 'all action' type of defender, strong everywhere, decent on the ball. Hummels is an above average intelligent defender, but better on the ball.

I'd say from what I've seen Otamendi is the better defender, but Hummels is the better 'footballer'. Both important in the modern game. I'd have Hummels at Arsenal before Otamendi, personally.

I've watched Hummels at Bundesliga level and I would say he's technically very good, but he can make mistakes/get caught out. Otamendi I've seen less of so probably couldn't give an accurate description.

He's been rubbish in the CL, and for Brazil whenever I've seen him.

You can't get a good deal of Porto anyway, and Zenit payed a lot for him that they'd want to recoup.

I'm fairly certain any player who goes to Russia for their football is only interested in the money though.

This is what you call a snub from Danish international Simon Kjaer, who has revealed he turned down a move to Liverpool because he wants to win trophies.

The 26-year-old had been linked with a move to Anfield before joining Fenerbahce from Lille this week.

And he told Haber Turk: "Liverpool wanted me, but I want championships, I want to win trophies. Fenerbahce's goals this season are big, and it was explained to me very well."

Right so I participate in a little game with friends and family where we pick teams from the top and bottom half of each English league (last season's finish) that we think will finish highest in the following season. I picked Chelsea last time as I thought they'd finish top (as did most) - that worked out. And because we picked before the Pulis resignation, I also picked Palace from the bottom half. Of course when Warnock was appointed, I felt like crying, but Pardew helped pull things around.

Who would be your tip from the bottom half of the 2014/15 table to do well this season, preferably get into the top half? It's on total points, not improvement. So a team doing 12th-> 9th is better for me than a team going 17th-> 12th.

    I'm feeling like Palace again...

Skrtel: New Liverpool contract reports are totally false
Skrtel: reports in the daily newspapers this week are simply not true and no new terms have been agreed.
His agent Karol Csonto "At the moment I can confirm that we are negotiating the matter with #LFC, but we have not signed the contract yet."

Ok so I presume the point about (a) is that being in a marriage/long term relationship will normally damage FPL performance because it will hinder your ability to watch as much football as is required.

But as I am the half of the relationship, the woman, normally associated with that problem, I should be fine, right? My fiancé and I watch A LOT of football.

I tried to get my fiancee into football when we moved to London (to no real avail), but she did watch Everton beat Arsenal 3-0 in the pub with me. Then, after that, she used a few stock phrases whenever I mentioned football:

"Arsenal push up and can be vulnerable to the counter attack"
"It's a bold move to play the main striker on the wing"
And her personal favourite: "Lukaku is a tank".

She rolls those out any time I watch football.

We have a good system if I watch football in our house: Lily watches all of that week's Eastenders on iPlayer. If she watches it when it's on TV, I am told to go away and read because I ruin it with criticism/guessing the storylines/saying "where is Ian Beale?"

It's odd. We've lived together so long that our TV tastes have become streamlined. There's hardly anything we don't watch together now. This of course means I no longer watch soaps and Tom hardly ever watches sci-fi. And we watch an unhealthy number of rom-coms... which, worryingly, isn't my influence.

How many previous winners have you checked out to see whether they fit this profile?

And for those who don't fit it, remember that records are made to be broken and that there is a first time for everything.

I only match c and don't expect to ever win it, but I do still hope to improve. I know there are better players than myself, but with a lot of luck you never know.

We all have a rather small chance of winning, but some have a much better chance than others.
The less skill you have, the more luck you need!

  26. A twist on the ticker
    Piggs Boson
    • 12 Years
    8 years, 10 months ago

** Warning: Long and confusing post alert! **

Thought I'd share a snippet of analysis from a program I made. It's essentially a ticker with extra detail in calculations, and many other functions. I may share the program when I've finished developing it, but I'd like some insight on how accurate you think the conclusions are first.
    .
Each team's attacking ability is taken into account, as well as their opponent's defensive ability, using specific home/away stats. (Only home stats are used when a team is played at home, and only away stats are used when a team is playing away)

The ticker rates their ability using 'goals scored' and 'clean sheets' from last season, with a small coefficient to adjust. For example, West Brom's defence is given a 1.1 coefficient, as Pulis over a whole season, instead of half, should improve the CS total slightly. Also, promoted sides get a brutal coefficient of 0.4, as the league is a big step up and how they adjust is unpredictable.

    ** Offence ** - Next 3 rankings

    1. United...............TOT / avl / NEW
    2. Arsenal............WHU / cpl / LIV
    3. Saints................new / EVE / wat
    4. Villa...................bou / MUN / cpl
    5. City....................wba / CHE / eve
    6. Palace................nor / ARS / AVL
    7. Spurs................mun / STK / lei
    ...
    18. Bournemouth....AVL / liv / whu
    19. Swansea..........che / NEW / sun
    20. Watford............eve / WBA / SOU

City's attack rating is so strong, that they still make 5th with crappy fixtures. This surprised me tbh, I may have to make adjustments here, what do you think?

    .
    **Defence** - Next 3 rankings

    1. Sunderland..............lei / NOR / SWA...(Dick = minor 1.1 coefficient in defence)
    2. Arsenal..................WHU / cpl / LIV
    3. West Brom.............MCY / wat / CHE......8-O
    4. United......................TOT / avl / NEW
    5. Swansea.................che / NEW / sun
    6. Southampton..........new / EVE / wat
    7. Leicester.................SUN / whu / TOT

    17. Spurs....................mun / STK / lei
    18. Palace....................nor / ARS / AVL
    19. Bournemouth.........AVL / liv / whu
    20. Newcastle............SOU / swa / mun

    .
Use, or use not, I don't mind either way. I would appreciate feedback though.

    .
TL:DR = Move on, this post isn't for you! 😀

It seems to predict West Brom will be very tight in those games. It has a few hidden factors based on recent history and stats, so that may have swung it. I'll look into it.

I can tweak the weightings of various factors as the season goes on. By next season, it should be much more accurate in giving probabilities of goals/CSs.

                Thank you Ruth 🙂

It's a project I've been working on for a while, and it's incredibly detailed and complex in places. The key is not to add any human assumptions or bias into the program, I've restricted the human element to a single coefficient so far.

The end game is to create a program that can play FPL, and maybe win it, but that is a long way off, and unlikely! I also have a bigger project outside FPL, so progress may be slow.

I enjoy all your articles btw, many have helped 🙂

                  Interesting.

I am working on 3 tickers right now (general, attacking, defensive) that are based almost entirely on what you'd call "human assumptions or bias" and what I'd like to think of as "informed judgement". 🙂

The statistics you are quoting (amongst others) are part of what is informing the assessments I am making and I am producing the tickers entirely manually.

Do you have an email address? I'd like to send my defensive ticker over when it is done, see how my "judgement" compares with your "program" approach. I wonder how similar they will be.

I think so too. But I don't want my personal view to affect it too much as this will beat the whole point of the program. It aims to find good players that we may overlook based on human flaws.

The stats are supporting West Brom for some reason, but I will look closely at my algorithm for the defence, because it does seem off!!

Also beat Chelsea 3-0 at home at the end of the season, already being Champions and losing Fabregas with a red at half an hour. Skews the result a little.

These are the fine details that the program will eventually take into account. Team motivation, red cards etc...

According to me, every one of the first 11 WBA games is a realistic CS opportunity for them.

For what it's worth I'd be surprised if they didn't manage 4-6 clean sheets out of those 11 games.

Nice work, Giggsy, I've done the same (home attack vs away defence and vice-versa, with slight adjustments as you've described yoursefl) but not derived any recommended fixtures from it yet. I'll see what my season ticker throws up then report back later.

      Love this stuff 😀

      1. Piggs Boson

You'd love some of my other programs. I wrote one that takes in 5 defenders, calculates which 3 have the highest projection for the week (using the same team stats above + personal player stats), then adds up the totals for any number of GWs you choose.

It's essentially a perfect rotation finder.

        1. Twisted Saltergater
          • 14 Years
          8 years, 10 months ago

I did the same last year for the first 19 games! It gave each fixture a score, then calculated the total score over 6, 12 and 19 GWs - the lowest being the most likely to keep the most clean sheets.

it didn't go as far as picking the best 2, 3 or 4 way rotations though - you had to do that by copying and pasting the teams alongside each other and seeing the final total based on lowest score for that given GW accross the 2,3, or 4 teams (easy to show than to describe!).

          Spreadsheet heaven really 😆

I'm an IT Consultant / developer so I find this sort of thing fun in my spare time.

        Thanks for the feedback, JK.

They kept 4 CSs away. And the attack ratings of Watford and Newcastle are low. Again, the defence calculations seem off though. Arsenal seem too high as well. It's all relative though, none of the top defences don't have a perfect 3.

I'll be tweaking, giving more weighting to recent data, and progressively less weighting to data further in the past.

if it uses actual data then I think it's sound - the principal is a good one

the attacking data looks spot on - the ticker hasn't predicted a good start for united, but spurs are woeful at the back and newcastle/villa even worse, so this is a good alternate view

having said that, I think most people probably only use the ticker for half the time - premium players from the top clubs tend to be fixture proof and nobody sticks a 12m asset on the bench (except possibly against chelsea parking the bus)

        Thanks.

I tend use hard stats, like CSs and goals scored, not potentially misleading ones like 'goal attempts'.

Very intriguing GB. I like your approach and I have been working on something similar.

Are you using last season's data? How many different variables are you using? I have been and had the idea of calculating an 'index' for each team, which takes into account certain types of data for both attacking and defensive stats and going from there. As you found out, Man City were so attacking that they skewed the calculations quite a bit.

      What do you think?

I have been using last season's data. Mainly goals scored and CSs, the other variables are negligible atm. I will be refining how I generate the ratings for attack and defence though. Early days.

Presently, the ratings are all kept in proportion to the other teams and therefore the attack and defence values are in proportion to eachother. It's hard to explain, but the maths is sound.
So atm, the fixture strength is determined by Attack - defence for attacking rating, and Defence - attack for defence rating. Which I sense is too simplistic and does seem to favour teams like City whose attack is very strong. But who knows, maybe they warrant that strong attack rating, even against tough defences...

      Lovely stuff GB.

What about adding a goals conceded function to the defence rankings as well as just the clean sheets? This could be what's skewing the results.

I also think that 0.4 is too low for the promoted sides. For instance, you're currently projecting F30, A103, CS5 for Watford, which is way too harsh.

I'll be adding goals conceded. On the next page there is a discussion about generating a defence rating.

And yeah, the coefficient is deliberately stingy. Top players like Triggerlips say you should avoid starting with promoted clubs, so wanted to damage their ratings a little. But a new coefficient will be made soon based on the %ge difference of past promoted clubs. It should be more accurate.

Trouble is it affects the ratings of the teams they're playing too though....

Feel a little guilty asking , but would you consider doing a similar one for the first 6-8 games.
Guilty cause Im not up to producing such masterpieces .
Love this work though GB, so could do my own rather manual extrapolations going forward

No doubt , a work in progress , but a great work in its infancy , Cheers

      Championship 2013-14: Leicester 18 CS (9 home, 9 away), Burnley 19 CS (11 home, 8 away), QPR 18 CS (10 home, 7 away).

      Premier League 2014-15: Leicester 10 CS (6 home, 4 away), Burnley 10 CS (7 home, 3 away), QPR 6 CS (5 home, 1 away).

The coefficients for these would be: Leicester home 0.67, Burnley home 0.64, QPR home 0.5, Leicester away 0.44, Burnley away 0.375, QPR away 0.14.

So 0.4 was about right for Leicester and Burnley away, too high for QPR away, and too low for all three at home.

Those were of course the defence coefficients for the three sides promoted in 2013-14.

Their attack coefficients were between 0.4 and 0.6 (apart from QPR away, which was 0.85).

      Giggs, amazing as always.

Although, what about SiB instead of goals?

People / teams can get *unlucky* or *lucky* with goals in the short term & SiB is typically a better indicator at how an offence is firing...

Really? Wow. I know shows like Frasier and Only Fools they screened the shows to a live audience, so the reactions are authentic. Big Bang has always sounded entirely manufactured to me, laughter at every little thing, which puts me off. They must be putting a lot of mics in the crowd!!

Sheldon says something stupid in a high pitched voice and wry smiling face.
Leonard replies to him in a moany voice with a frowning face, followed by laugh track.
