Scout Report – Cedric Soares

Following hot on the heels of Juanmi’s move to St Mary’s Stadium, Sporting Lisbon right-back Cedric Soares penned a four-year deal with Southampton on June 18, amid competition from Stoke City.

Speaking on their latest recruit, Saints’ director of football Les Reed revealed that long-term target Soares will be invaluable as the club fight on multiple fronts next term:

“Cedric represents a quality addition to our squad, and is another player with a desire and hunger to succeed. We have been following Cedric’s progress for some time and felt now was the time to make our move. While there was competition from other Premier League clubs we were confident we would prove to be an attractive option for such an ambitious player. We have now signed two exciting talents early in the window and will continue in our pursuit of Premier League success and our European journey.”

Soares also took time out to discuss his move, with the defender relishing the opportunity to make his mark in the Premier League:

“I joined this club because I believe we can do better and better every year. Everyone knows that the Premier League is a very, very good league – and maybe the best one in the world – so for me it’s a pleasure to be here, but even more of a pleasure to be in Southampton. Southampton is a big, big club in England and is very respected. It’s a club with a lot of history and, for me, it’s very important to play for a big club. I think this is a very good move.”

The History

Soares was born in Singen, Germany but moved to Portugal (the native country of his parents) when he was two years old. At just eight years of age, Soares was integrated into Sporting Lisbon’s youth system, where he remained until the 2010/11 Primeira Liga season. In May of that season, Soares was handed his debut for the senior squad – a 1-0 home league defeat to Vitoria de Setubal. He went on to make four more appearances during the campaign, notching one assist in the process.

To further his development, Sporting sent the right-back on loan to another top-flight outfit, Académica de Coimbra, for the 2011/12 season. While there, he was part of the side that bested his parent club, Sporting, in the Portuguese Cup Final, sealing Académica’s first Taca de Portugal trophy since 1939. Upon his return to Lisbon, Soares became a more regular fixture in the first team throughout the following three seasons, tallying two goals and 11 assists across 89 appearances in all competitions.

On the international stage, Soares accrued a remarkable 72 caps across six levels of Portugal’s youth system before making the step up to the senior squad in 2014. The attacking full-back managed a single assist for the U21 side and has since gone to earn four caps for the full squad.

The Prospects

Soares’ move to Southampton is widely expected to pave the way for their incumbent right-back, Nathaniel Clyne, to complete a £15 million trade to Liverpool or Manchester United. The Merseysiders’ opening £10 million offer was rebuffed last month, yet the Saints are said to be resigned to losing the English defender in the coming weeks.

In an ideal situation for Fantasy managers, Clyne’s proposed switch to Anfield would occur after the player lists are released, thus reducing Soares’ starting price by virtue of him being the “back-up” right-back in their squad. Such a scenario could see him priced around 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, though if that doesn’t transpire, a price of 5.5 or even 6.0 looks likely, putting him in line with the likes of Ryan Bertrand and Jose Fonte, who are both due price hikes following strong 2014/15 campaigns.

Soares recorded just two goals for Sporting Lisbon in 94 outings, yet 12 assists over that period highlights his attacking potential. In terms of frequency of assists throughout their careers, the Portugal international trumps Clyne, with his average of one assist every 671 minutes bettering the Englishman’s rate of one every 802 minutes.

Certainly, having racked up 15 clean sheets in each of the last two seasons, Southampton’s backline is likely to arrive on our radars once again. Furthermore, their favourable start to the season (new, EVE, wat, NOR, wba, MUN, SWA) encourages investment in their defensive ranks.

Of the four home ties that Koeman’s troops embark on before their trip to Chelsea in Gameweek 8, the Manchester United clash appears the toughest on paper – although Southampton defeated Louis van Gaal’s outfit 1-0 in their last meeting. Given that the Saints boasted the joint-best clean sheet record (11) at home last term, this bodes well for these early-season exchanges as Koeman looks to take advantage of the fixtures and set the standard for another impressive campaign.

The likely departure of Clyne and the impact on his own price tag will be pivotal to Soares’ potential as a Fantasy asset. In addition, Fantasy managers will also be monitoring the valuation of loan keeper Maarten Stekelenburg, signed just 24-hours ago. He could well trump Soares to emerge as the most budget-friendly defensive option at St Mary’s.

Oh I've not doubt Clyne's on his way. One year left on his contract, no movement made towards an agreement and he's said to be keen on Liverpool. I expect more defensive reinforcements though, when Clyne does leave. We had no RB cover, other than Toby, last season.

Cedric has his critics for being too attacking but he was at one point linked to Barcelona so I'm assuming he's not so bad.

Please, calm down and stop flipping. I'm not sure how it even can be a problem with _my_ attitude that _you_ can't stand a disagreeing opinion on a public forum, but it really seems your attitude wouldn't be harmed by a little light-mindedness. Maybe you just have a bad day, but there's no reason to be butt hurt just because somebody is not over the moon about some players your club signs.

Manchester United are set to make a move for Spurs No. 1 Hugo Lloris, says L'Equipe.

The Red Devils are understood to want to complete the France international's transfer to Old Trafford as quickly as possible with doubts continuing to grow over the future of their own goalkeeper David de Gea.

Meanwhile, the French sports daily also claim Real Madrid captain Iker Casillas may join Spurs as a replacement for the United-bound Lloris.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Goalkeeper strategy.

With Cech moving to Arsenal, ManU more than likely to have a new goalkeeper and former budget favourites such as Pantillimon likely to get a price hike, could this be the season where the cheap rotating budget keeper strategy comes unstuck.

Could we be better served by opting for just Cech (if he moves to Arsenal) and a 4.5m back up rather than pinning our hopes on keepers from promoted sides getting us clean sheets?

    1. Lucy.

Sounds pricey to me. Might be able to get a decent 5.0/4.5 rotation. A 4.5 backup to a 6.0m sounds a bit crazy. If you went for a 6.0, surely you'd just play him every game and sit a 4.0m on the bench? I know JK was considering just going for Pantilimon.

If the Lloris move happens after the FPL Opens...we can have Vorm at a decent price and some rotation can be worked upon...

but this season I agree getting a cheap good rotation would be tough...will have to look at just 1 good keeper..

I asked this question last week, I am tempted to just get a big hitter and leave him for the season. The problem is that the big clubs tend to start quite poorly with regard to clean sheets, and you lose out on save points.

Trouble is when Foster recovers you have to make a gk change. A gk is the one position ideally you don't want to have to change until you wildcard.

That is why I always think a premium you play each week plus a 4m is a risk.

        1. Hooky

I think I'm willing to risk it in order to have the bigger budget for outfield players at the start. Should be able to build team value a bit by the time Foster is back which will make it easier to bring him in.

No, definitely not. The lower number of clean sheets from cheaper keepers is partly negated by more save points. That's why there's never a big gap in GK scores come GW 38. 5.5m is the most I'd ever spend on a keeper, so that rules the likes of Cech out. You don't want too much money tied up in goalkeepers when the 100m budget we have already restricts us a lot.

Cech's gonna be 6.0 surely. Having him with a 4.5-GK is gonna push up the GK budget to 10.5, a little too much for my liking.

      I think I'll just go with Foster/Myhill if they are around 9-9.5 or Fabianski + a 4.0.

Southampton + Norwich works well too, Stekelenburg/Rudy should be affordable at 9.5. Though Forster's thought to be back by October-November. That's the only concern.

Every year a premium gk strategy emerges then flops just as quickly. DDG/Federici a couple of years ago, Migs this year.

Even without pants, last year heaton was great value for long periods. A couple of 4.5s is always likely to offer value through saves and backup in case of injury for cheaper than one 5+ alone.

Gwk 2 last season DDG to Krul as part of a hit to afford Sigurdsson. Krul immediately paid me back and so too Sigurdsson. I always look for 4.5m options in goal...but worry this year that the options will be limited. Krul is key for me, as he has been so many seasons.

It's never been a problem before to have a decent £4.5m rotating pair, why would it be now? That or the £4.5m/£4.0m from the same club looks, as ever, the route to me.

A cheap keeper and expensive defender combo has proved to be better every year than the opposite way round. Good chance it'll be the same next season - which makes an expensive keeper a luxury that can normally be done without.

I'm still in favour of double Sunderland. The two combined outscored all other keepers last season. The thing with rotation is picking the right starter each week, and as Sunderland seem to get away clean sheets this is made more difficult.

I will do Pants/Mann if 5.0 + 4.5, or double West Brom and go with PvA in defence if this works out a shade cheaper. Prefer the Sunderland keepers though.

Krul and foster served me well last year. If I can find a goalkeeper that's starting for a non promoted club @ 4.5, then he will be straight in my team.

      What Lucy says is correct

atm I'm minded that Panti alone is the way to go, Sunderland keepers are usually great value, but terrible to predict in their CS which makes them terrible for rotation.

Sunderland should pick up at least 10 CS this season and I would wager 130 saves at a minimum

No decent rotations bar perhaps Krul and Ruddy have really stood out for me

Panti says no as money will matter this season. I think Panti for 5.0 and 4.0 plus 1.5m to upgrade elsewhere should outscore Cech at 6.0 plus 4.5. Also reckon Ospina will get the odd run out.

It's the team play that got them those CS's. Don't fool yourself thinking that you get a strong defence by buying Clyne and Bertrand. It's midfield where they defend. The big problem is that they're losing that midfield and it may turn out to be harder to replace those players. Of course, defensive players are generally tougher to replace than attacking ones.

The thing is, with midfielders getting an extra point for their goal, plus the chance of a clean sheet one, and more BAPS when they do score, plus the vogue for wide forwards or number 10s classed as midfielders like Sanchez, Hazard, Mane etc, you have guys who only need to score 10-12 goals in a season to equate to 20 from a striker.

Hopefully not more tha 5.0 because he's not 100% nailed. The trouble is that he had a very strong finish to the 2014/15 season and that will stick in the mind of the pricing gurus.

Phew!! Just rescued a Blackbird chick from the middle of the road.

It is currently in my back garden and I await it's parents to work out how to sort out the feeding and getting it back to where it should be, or at least somewhere safe.

Tiny chopped up meat bits out plus water in an upturned 1920's metal milk crate the chick can get in and out of but not predators.

This happened to me the other morning. Probably the best thing I'd ever seen. I recorded the whole thing. The chick mum hopped along the fence with a worm in its mouth and the chick followed and tried to fly and done a forward roll in the air and landed on his head - so funny. He went down the side of my house and turned right and hopped along, but I could hear it's mum calling it from straight ahead. I thought where's he going. In the end he clocked on and hopped along again. And I found out his nest is in the tree outside my house. God knows how he was going to get up again. But there's a bush next to it so I presume he went in there for now. Just hope a cat didn't get him.

After all that, I turn around and went to stop the recording only to find out I didn't press record!

We will probably use the same, Guidetti and Thelin even though both have minor injurys, Thelin can't train between games. In the middle Lewicki and Hiljemark are safe, probably Khalili also as his workrate is much needed. Against England we started with 4 CM's, could be the same again but I hope and think one of Larsson or Quaison takes one wing insteadmof Tibbling. I think our best defender Milosevic is back after his RC in the first game, would push Baffo out to full back and Lindelöf out of team. Allthough we did defend quite well so coach may see it like why fix what is not broken

line ups will decide, danish offensive players are hard to pick cause they have so many good. This danish team is rated higher then those back when Laudrup brothers run amok

I got Lingard for the last round on the basis of a couple of reports saying he was England's best player in the first game. Also remember him scoring 4 goals on his loan debut in 2013.

Lloris, clyne, Miranda, benteke, sterling, sneiderlin, kane, benzema, bale, ramos, gundogan, schweinsteiger, godin, mandjukic, otamendi, cech, cillissen, pogba! 🙂

and out of all of these we will probably end up with 2 possibly 3

Name 3 attackers likely under 8M most likely to fit into your side. And 2 defenders under 5M. Want to know what FFS is thinking.

Milner, maybe Deeney and Ritchie (depends how I structure my team). Under 5m defenders, I'll just have a few rotating, need to assess the rotating teams properly first.

You think Siggy will come under 8? Sakho?

        Dawson?

          i think hell be 8! 8.5 max

Dawson in a solid pulis defence hopefully at 5.0.

Sakho was great last season early on until injuries and west hams form went downhill.

Ritchie, 4.5 bench fodder and Mane.

PvA, Ollson or Yedlin if he goes to Norwich, 4.5 Leicester defender.

For some reason read 3 midfielders haha.

Deeney, Ritchie, Jerome, Bojan, Sakho and Gomis all decent options up top.

Ritchie, 4.5 bench fodder and Mane. Maybe Siem De Jong too.

For defenders, PVA probably, and a Norwich one (Olsson or Yedlin).

For forwards, possibly Ritchie, but will need to look closer.

Chadli out scored the others and plays for a better team?

Would certainly want a Bournemouth attacker, Richie in midfield at £5.5m would be my first port of call, if not him then Wilson up front for a similar price. If one of the Cherries defenders come in at £4m they'll be first on the teamsheet but i'd be willing to shell out £4.5m on Francis or Daniels(hopefully classed as a defender).

Otherwise, Ayew looks promising as a £7-8m midfielder in Wales as is Gomis, a few jitters about Theo being £8m but I don't buy it. Mané always an option with Southampton's fixtures, also JRod if his price is nice and he gets a good pre-season. I'd bite your hand off for a £5m Soton defender.

Attackers attack only or midfield too as many seem to think?

Sakho, Rémy, Cissé, for attackers, depending on where they play and whether they're fit.

Under 5 as in not over 4.5? Because I think PVA will cost you 5.0 as will a few Pulis defenders from WBA.

Where do you reckon Cisse will end up? Seems to be lots of exit talk. He's a funny one, never know what he'll do.

I have no idea, assuming he'll stay at Newcastle, tbh, and he'd fit in my team if things start to work out there. I don't think it's going to be that crap of an attack next season. McLaren isn't a genius, but that midfield really has a lot of skill in it and they really only need a good striker to feed and a decent manager who plays them with some consistency for players to feel confident and the luck is going to turn. Cissé can be that striker, McLaren I'm less sure of, but I'm likely to punt on them in the early season.

If Austin comes, Cissé probably is sold somewhere. Southampton? I hope the prices are revealed first.

I can't see us going for Cissé. 🙁 I don't think we'd want *another* 30 year old striker, it's not really the Southampton way of doing things. Prefer to have 25 year olds we can sell to Liverpool in a couple of years 😉

And you're right, that Newcastle midfield is packed with potential. Just need to work out how to harness it.

There were 6 starting keepers priced at £4.5m last year:

Mannone/Pantilimon, Krul, Guzan, (Heaton, Schmeichel, Green)

3 of which were from the promoted sides.

How many will we get this year?

Not sure Given deserves an upgrade if i'm honest, he may not even be the started with Given ending the season as number one.

That's true, Given and Guzan could both be £4.5. I'm not going anywhere near the Villa keepers though!

Given and Guzan should both be 4.5 since we do not know which one is nailed.

What is your current draft? Guerreiro and Ilori are good value at the back for Portugal. Kliment and Volland are a must if they are starting.

Does anyone know what the biggest increase in a player's price has been from one season to the next?
Will Kane be a larger increase?
