Scout Notes – Gameweek 3 – Monday

Liverpool chalk up a third straight clean sheet after emerging from the Emirates with a goalless draw. Arsenal fail to score at home yet again, with Petr Cech keeping the Merseysiders at bay with a string of vital first-half stops.

Arsenal Stutter at Home Again

Despite boasting nearly two-thirds of the possession (66%) and fashioning 19 shots at goal, the Gunners were unable to breach Liverpool’s unyielding rearguard. Astonishingly, the north London club have now drawn blanks in five of their last six matches at the Emirates across all competitions, which might encourage Arsene Wenger to switch things up for their next home encounter.

In light of Per Mertesacker (illness) and Laurent Koscielny sitting out this encounter, Gabriel and Callum Chambers were drafted into central defence. The former was the only member of Arsenal’s back five not to receive a single bonus point, with Petr Cech claiming the maximum three – the former Chelsea shot-stopper amassed 11 points in all, having rebuffed the Reds’ attacks with eight saves.

Alexis Sanchez’s came close to breaking the deadlock when he clattered the upright from close range following a well-worked move, while Aaron Ramsey’s 6% ownership were miffed to witness his goal wrongly disallowed for offside. Both players will fancy their chances of gracing the scoresheet soon, though, given that they face a trip to Newcastle United and home tie against Stoke City in the next two Gameweeks.

Reds Rearguard Holds Steady

Liverpool continued their unbeaten start to the season after carding a third successive clean sheet. Joe Gomez (4.7) turned out a performance that belied his years, quelling the hosts’ threat down their right flank by virtue of his excellent positioning and impressive recovery speed. On last night’s showing, the ex-Charlton defender looks likely to retain his starting role in the left-back berth ahead of Alberto Moreno, rendering him the most valuable route into the Merseysiders’ defence. Three favourable home ties in the next four Gameweeks (WHU, NOR, AVL) only serve to strengthen his claim for inclusion.

Philippe Coutinho (8.1) fired a rasping strike onto the underside of the crossbar in the early exchanges, before forcing a superb fingertip-save out of Cech minutes before the break. No midfielder has attempted more shots than the Brazil international this term (15), which certainly bodes well for a Gameweek 4 clash against a Hammers outfit that shipped four goals last time out and are devoid of Carl Jenkinson and Adrian through suspension.

Christian Benteke (8.5) spurned a golden opportunity to afford Liverpool the lead in the first period but proved effective as the spearhead to their attack. Given that the other candidates around Benteke’s price tag (Harry Kane, Romelu Lukaku and Graziano Pelle) also blanked this Gameweek, his 40% ownership will feel confident ahead of the above-mentioned trio of Anfield showdowns.

I doubt it. The problem was Arsenal's lack of width, they kept trying to force it through the congested centre of Can Lucas Milner + a back 4.

Coutinho would be a real flair pick. A footballer's footballer 🙂

He has historically been very frustrating to own though, for all his wonderful skills, his shooting has been a bit haphazard, partly because he shoots from range so often. But I read something this morning that could suggest that things could be very different to last season for him.

      http://basstunedtored.com/2015/08/25/analysis-arsenal-0-liverpool-0/

"What is even more interesting is that Benteke has created six chances for Coutinho already; bear in mind here that only five Liverpool players set up more shots for the Brazilian in the whole of last season, and two of those only managed eight chances."

So he's a risk but possibly with more upside than he's ever had before.

Lots of uncertainty over Brom defenders, he wasn't good in the last game, and they are bringing in another defender.

      A: Coutinho + Wilson
      B: Benteke + Westwood

With A, I will bench either Wilson or Mahrez in most week.
For B, Westwood will be auto bench in the team below.

      Sanchez - Pedro - Yaya - Mahrez - XX
      Kun - Diouf - XX

You have great C choice and some good players for this week.

Also, most of the players have already absorbed price drop.

I think it's probably not a good time to WC at this time of the week.

      Currently have:

Sanchez - Silva - Mahrez - Ayew (Westwood)

      Aguero - Kane - Diof

i am thinking of taking a -4 hit doing Kane and Ayew to Costa and Redmond.

      Yes or no? And why?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Why are we getting our captaincy selections so wrong?

Is it something we are doing? Are we risk averse? Or are the failures of Aguero, Rooney, Sanchez and Hazard over the course of the first three gameweeks just an early season blip. Will they (well maybe not Rooney) justify our selections over the coming weeks?

Or should we learn the lessons of last season with Harry Kane and ignore price and go for form first? Mahrez captainers are among those who arguably learned that lesson.

Six home wins so far isn't helping matters.

Aguero is surely the silver bullet from now on, though?

After failing spectacularly with my captain choices in weeks 1 & 2 I went against the common wisdom and chose a cheap captain this week. In form and playing against an out of form Sunderland, I thought Ayew was a brilliant choice.

Needless to say Sunderland tightened up their defence and Ayew scored 1 point, the lowest of my team.

Luckily everyone else performed but I think I'll go back to a City player this week.

Defenders seem to be good captaincy options too these days. Seriously though, if you look at the top point scorers so far this season, its very random.

Indeed, are we overlooking Kolarov this weekend? He's the man in form, looks certain for a clean sheet and probably bonus, so Kun will need a monster haul to best him. On top of which Kolarov has a big attacking upside himself.

Going on opposition form, home team form and player form Kolarov actually looks the superior Man City captaincy shout this week - but how many will captain him? Very few I think, which is a shame.

Its not uncommon for defenders to get 150+ points. At prices such as 5.5 these premium defensive options are bargains. Gomez is 4.6 even, thats crazy

I feel as if that quote can come back and bite us in the behind.

What is the probability? and how do we know it? Its easy to justify our own decisions and say we were unlucky but thats a dangerous game. Yaya and Ramsey defied this probability in the past.

In its simplest form, probability can be expressed mathematically as the number of occurrences of a targeted event divided by the number of occurrences plus the number of failures of occurrences (this adds up to the total of possible outcomes):

            p(a) = p(a)/[p(a) + p(b)]

Sometimes the right choice just doesn't pay off.

GW1 can be a lottery as there is no form to go off.

GW3 didn't have an obvious choice in my opinion. Rooney, Aguero, Hazard, Pelle, were all decent shouts but none of them scored big.

So far my captains have been Rooney, Benteke and Aguero and don't think they were bad choices.

Next week a lot of the potential big performers have favourable fixtures. I think captain choice this week could be a real differential as can't see them all blanking.

No real point scorer in gameweek 1 for me, but captaining Bentekkers in gameweek 2 and Gomis gameweek 3 I think I've done fairly well! Like others say, some defenders are looking like good captaining options (looking at you Kolarov)

risk averse. Start the week full of bravado and intending to follow gut instinct. End up following the crowd as 40-50% captaincy selections can't be wrong can they?
there was some software going around last year that worked out what wrong captaincy decisions had cost. mine was well over 200 net pointsafter about 28/29 games!!
only ever captained one defender (Baines) when he was on a hot streak and taking the pens, freekicks etc.

Form has to be a big part of it, and that's very difficult to judge at this stage. You can argue that Mahrez's form made him an obvious pick this week, but if he'd done what he did in GW1 & GW2 this season in GW16 and GW17 last year, would people have been captaining him for GW18? I seriously doubt it - they would have said that it was too small a sample size, and that he was as yet unproven. Three gameweeks of returns is much more convincing than two though, and it's fair to say that he looks like a must-have budget enabler at the moment.

I do agree that price can mislead people - you often see critics of the idea of someone benching a 6m player, when there's nothing inherently wrong with that (bar arguably being a poor use of your budget). Similarly, would Gomis have been in more teams from the start at 8m instead of 7m, for example? It seems perverse, but I think that he might have.

However, the top players are expensive for a reason. Take Aguero for example. City blanked 3 times last season. Aguero was involved in 54.8% of their goals when he was on the pitch. City were always likely to score, and if fit, Aguero was always more likely than not to be involved. In the 29 matches where he played 60 minutes or more, Aguero blanked 10 times. That's very good, but even the best player in the game only brought the points in 2/3 of the time. Captaincy blanks are an inevitable part of the game, and we shouldn't over-react to it. Keep captaining the big hitters with good fixtures - it will work out as the best strategy over the long term.

Because captaincy is a total crapshoot, no matter who you pick.

It's the most frustratingly luck-based aspect of FPL. The new tokens don't help either.

      11. Ruth_NZ
        • 9 Years

        Here's my take...

        1. Past performance is being viewed through rose-tinted spectacles and not analytically. As a result certain players are used as a "comfort blanket" captain choice, supported and reinforced by the majority who then claim afterwards that it wasn't a bad decision, only bad luck. Couple this with aversion to risk - by which I mean the risk of making a mistake that others don't (safety in numbers) - and you have a reasonable explanation for the poor recent record of FFS captain polls (which didn't do well last season either).

        2. First example - Sanchez is not a good captain option right now in any game in my opinion. He was brilliant in FPL for 3 months last season when Arsenal had a lot of injuries, he was playing central and everything was going through him. Now he's wide in a team with more attacking options. He can't be captained because of that unless you are willing to take a big punt (at least I consider it to be a big punt). Of course he will get some hauls but they are not going to be easily predictable and that's what you need from a captain option.

        3. Second example - Aguero is not the "default" captain option (or shouldn't be in my opinion). He's unlikely to be the best option every week. He scores more goals at home than away (69 at home to 43 away in the PL) and has never scored a PL hat-trick away from the Etihad where he has 5.

I would prefer Costa to Aguero this week - Watford have been really resilient so far whereas Palace are more open. So I think Palace (h) is a better fixture than Watford (h) for goals therefore. I don't have Costa so it's academic but if I did I wouldn't be frightened to make that call even though it's only a marginal one and Aguero could very easily do better than Costa - it's maybe 55/45. But it's certainly not a default decision (or shouldn't be).

        4. As a result of (1) above, lower priced players with good form and fixtures tend to be ignored and even laughed at (as Jonty pointed out). Anyone captaining Mahrez so far has been derided on here as a "casual", I have seen that superior attitude in posts a number of times. 🙁 Maybe these so-called "casuals" are just less prejudiced or convinced of their informed viewpoints?

Similarly it is not popular on here to contest or express doubt about majority choices. There's a kind of thing where these choices are supposed to be considered wise, and if they fail unlucky, and anyone saying otherwise is "captain hindsight" or worse. I have been posting on here for a year now and have gained some credibility I guess but last season I took an almighty amount of flak for challenging majority views. How dare some no-nothing newbie do that? 😕

        5. In my opinion any score of 7+ is a captain success. I don't need a haul (though I'll be glad when it comes). I don't even need my captain to be considered "explosive". I just need a player that scores a goal or gets a clean sheet if a defender. That's what I try to prioritise in captain decisions. Mind you, with 3 (c) fails so far it appears I am no better at it than anyone else. 🙂

lool just appears that you're angry that many here criticise certain player decisions, which is true....who is mahrez or ayew or gomis over aguero and costa and hazard and even rooney?

...we're just starting the season so form of a week or two doesn't mean anything and logically any player who has been successful in the game in the past and believes he's a good fpl player would pick one of the big boys in a favourable fixture or even a less favourable one

....so I would criticise those who keep picking mahrez for example every week and call them noobs or trigger happy type of players who get lucky...it happened with ramsey before but he proved himself to be a top midfielder after and is established now...you can say those got lucky...so until mahrez becomes that top class well known midfielder I will still call anyone who capped him lucky noob lol

Ruthnz you probably won't see this or reply since it won't suit your argument but kun scored 13 league goals both home and away last season and I'm not sure but I think he may have had more assists away from home and less blanks away from home.

Looking beyond last season is a bit failure as last season was the first where he was foot for the majority of it.

Also of the ten games v top 6 opposition he blanked in just 2 games (ARS, CHE) scoring 10 goals 1 assist iirc so maybe you might have been wrong to doubt him as a captain pick v Everton?

Ps it is no harm to admit you are wrong every now and again it will do wonders for your credibility.

There are a lot of informed people on this site who delve into KPIs (Key performance indicators). You can't say you or anyone else has got a captaincy decision wrong if the judgement was based on sound analysis or thought process.

We should be risk averse. Whenever we make a decision it should be to get the maximum possible return from our available budget.

FPL tell you at the start of the season who they think is high/low risk through the pricing system. Our job is to figure out where FPL have mispriced and sell and buy accordingly.

Prior to GW3 we didn't have much in the way of form thus it makes perfect sense to look back at the previous season in order to draw some conclusions.

It is from now on that we will separate the shrewd operators from the risk taking punters.

"We should be risk averse. Whenever we make a decision it should be to get the maximum possible return from our available budget."

Those two statements aren't potentially contradictory? What are you looking for - a safe return or the maximum possible? The latter often implies risk.

            Hi Ruth,

The below definition should help you.

A description of an investor who, when faced with two investments with a similar expected return (but different risks), will prefer the one with the lower risk.

So as you see you an be both risk averse and going for the maximum possible return. e.g picking Aguero at home to Watford is both risk averse and going for the maximum possible points return.

This is my judgement, not fact.
