Scout Scribbles – Rooney Finds His Form

Wayne Rooney fires a hat-trick as United ease into the Champions League group stages. Romelu Lukaku bags a brace as Everton overcome battling Barnsley. Moussa Sissoko is on course for a weekend return, Julian Speroni steps up his recovery, whilst Sadio Mane remains doubtful for Southampton.

Rooney Fires United into Group Stages

Manchester United coasted through to the group stages of the Champions League courtesy of a Wayne Rooney hat-trick. Ander Herrera bagged a goal and assist in a 4-0 win against Club Brugges, while Juan Mata, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Memphis Depay delivered the final passes for the other strikes. Louis van Gaal named just two changes from the XI that drew 0-0 with Newcastle, drafting Michael Carrick and Herrera in for Morgan Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger at the double pivot. Javier Hernandez missed a penalty in the 81st minute.

The Scout Says: In the wake of three successive blanks on the goal front, Rooney’s ownership is plummeting fast across the Fantasy games. Nonetheless, for those 26% of FPL managers still in possession of the United frontman, Rooney’s confidence-boosting performance away from the home comforts of Old Trafford offers hope ahead of a trip to Swansea this Sunday. Herrera impressed in his first start of the campaign, particularly when he was pushed into the number ten role following the substitution of Adnan Januzaj at the break. The latter’s chances of claiming a starting berth at the Liberty Stadium now look slim off the back of two lackluster performances, with Herrera and suspension-free Marouane Fellaini looking the likeliest candidates to take up the central support berth against Garry Monk’s in-form outfit .

Lukaku Brace Seals Toffees’ Passage

Everton triumphed 5-3 over League One opponents Barnsley after their League Cup Second Round clash ended 3-3 in regulation time. Romelu Lukaku continued his fine scoring form with a brace, whilst Kevin Mirallas and Steven Naismith etched their names onto the scoresheet, with an own goal accounting for the Toffees’ breakthrough in extra time. Roberto Martinez elected to field a strong side, with Arouna Kone, James McCarthy, Ross Barkley and Tim Howard the only notable first-teamers not included in the starting line-up. Barkley and Gerard Deulofeu were called upon at half time to assist the rescue effort and achieved just that, with the former grabbing an assist and the Spaniard staking his claim for a starting role with a trio of assists at Oakwell.

The Scout Says: Although Lukaku’s 18.5% ownership will have been delighted to watch the Belgian marksman net his third and fourth goals of the season, they’ll be slightly concerned by the fact he lasted the full 122 minutes just three days before they’re set to host Spurs at Goodison Park. Furthermore, it was clearly Martinez’s intention to afford Barkley the night off, yet the situation necessitated his involvement – which amounted to 77 minutes in all. The attacking returns from Mirallas, Naismith and Deulofeu highlight the competition for places at the wide berths in Everton’s 4-2-3-1 set-up, ensuring that Kone and Cleverley are one slip-up away from relinquishing their slots. With the short-term schedule very much against then, though, few will be prepared to snap up any Everton players until the fixtures turn in their favour around Gameweek 11.

Magpies Hopeful on Sissoko

Moussa Sissoko could be available for selection when Newcastle host Arsenal on Saturday, having stepped up his recovery from the groin strain he sustained in Gameweek 2. Speaking to the local press, Steve McClaren revealed:

“He has been out on the grass, so we will take it a day at a time. It’s touch and go, but it would be nice to get him back, and also Daryl (Janmaat) is back, so we started the week well, continued it and we have a pretty big game on Saturday now.”

The Scout Says: Although Ayoze Perez performed admirably on the right flank against Manchester United – particularly with regards to his tracking back – Sissoko is likely to reclaim his starting berth against the Gunners. Gabriel Obertan has been deployed on the left wing for the Magpies’ opening trio of match-ups, yet the starring display from new recruit Florian Thauvin (one goal and three assists) during their 4-1 victory over Northampton Town could convince Steve McClaren to hand the Frenchman his maiden league start. Priced at 6.5, Thauvin tallied more assists (seven) and racked up key passes at greater frequency (one every 47.1 minutes) than any Toon midfielder last term.

Speroni Steps Up Recovery

Having returned to light training on Wednesday, Julian Speroni is expected to return to full training next week as he continues his rehabilitation from a finger injury:

The Scout Says: Despite the fact that Crystal Palace face the hardest upcoming trio of fixtures (che, MCI, tot) of any side in the league, Alex McCarthy – who’s served as the Eagles’ stand-in shot-stopper while Speroni has been sidelined – boasts an 11% ownership by virtue of his budget 4.0 price tag. Given that the forntight’s international break is just around the corner, there’s a chance that Speroni could well be between the sticks for Palace at the Etihad, lumbering McCarthy owners with a non-playing keeper that’s bound to drop in price.

Mixed Injury News for Saints

Ronald Koeman revealed that Victor Wanyama has not travelled with Southampton’s squad ahead of their Europa League clash with FC Midtjylland due to a stomach bug, while he remains optimistic that Sadio Mane will recover from the hip complaint that forced him off against Watford last weekend:

“Victor didn’t travel with the team because he is ill and the latest update from the doctor is that he has a stomach infection. We found out Victor wasn’t coming on the trip this morning. I have to believe the doctor. I hope he will be available for the weekend but we will have to wait. Sadio is doubtful. Normally he will do the beginning of the session (on Wednesday), separate of the team. Maybe he can be involved in the second part.”

The Scout Says: Mane’s potential return could be good news for his owners ahead of the weekend home encounter with Norwich. Although the Senegal international has failed to score this season, Koeman’s decision to switch to 3-4-1-2 at Vicarage Road, handing Mane a spot up front alongside Graziano Pelle, boosts his potential as an out of position prospect. Wanyama is the preferred budget midfield option in the FPL game this season – the 4.5-priced Kenyan sits in over 14% of sides and helped his side earn their first clean sheet of the season last time out. With fellow defensive midfielder Jordy Clasie still on the sidelines through injury, those holding Saints defenders will be hoping Wanyama recovers in time to offer protection to the Saints backline against a Norwich side that sits third for attempts on goal (55) after three rounds of fixtures.

Very dangerous and should have scored. However, I don't think any EPL teams would be carved open that easily conceding so many chances where the attackers are clean through on the keeper

We weren't wrong to ditch him at all. Anyone who watched his opening games could see how poor he was playing and how few chances he was getting. I don't expect that to suddenly change overnight, and a good game against Club Brugge doesn't really translate to PL form (see Depay)...

I swapped Rooney for Aguero, like most people on here, so in all honesty i'm not too worried (even as a Utd fan). Aguero will bang in a frightening amount of goals with the supporting cast he already has, even more so if Kevin de Bruyne joins in the coming days.

IF Man Utd don't sign any more forward players, and they want to finish in the top 4 again, they will need 20+ PL goals from Rooney.

When Rooney, and Utd, hits form he will score goals for sure. But Club Brugge were so poor that I wouldn't use that as a yardstick for either Roon or Utd's form.

When he starts banging some goals in the Prem and Utd are clicking, then I will get him as a priority.

No we have it right. Aguero is in.
Then Rooney or a little more to Costa? Or a little less to Bentekke? Much better.
Its how hes playing, he wants to be a striker but still takes himself back into midfield and out wide chasing the ball. No discipline. And Brugge are gash

Different dynamics. Bruges were trying to overturn a 2 (and then more) goal deficit. I doubt Swansea will adopt similar tactics. but the performance will have given Man Utd, and especially Rooney, some confidence which I'm sure will help them for Sunday's game and definitely make Swansea wary of over committing. Makes the Utd defenders v Bournemouth defenders team selection a little less clear-cut than it was yesterday for me.

Last week Depay got a brace and an assist v Brugge and everyone thought, "oh, must get him before Newcastle at home". It failed, and so did Rooney. With Man Uniteds fixtures turning sour now, I dont think ditching him is bad in any way.

Of course, he is a striker/nr.10 for a team probably finishing top 4. He will get some goals, he will get some assists through the season. But for 10,5m, after the form he showed in first 3 gws? There are so many better options out there.

im seeing this more about the likes of depay and mata than rooney. a confident wayne is more likely to convert their passes and set up more chances for them. sure it was a poor side but a hatty is a hatty and he is bound to be buoyed by it. too hard to fit in my team but makes me hold depay a bit longer

    21. Ludo

      Club Brugge were very poor.

What last night did show, however, is that Rooney's finishing ability is something that's never diminished. The problem hasn't been that he was failing to find the net (a charge which, shock horror, you could certainly level at Sanchez and Aguero, given the number of chances they've had so far), so much as that he hasn't had a chance to speak of in three gameweeks - bar one early on against Newcastle, which he promptly tucked away, only for the offside flag to be raised.

Whether that is due to him losing the pace or mentality (which is key) to get into goalscoring positions, or that his team simply aren't creating enough chances for him, it's difficult to say. His dropping deep to collect the ball could be seen as him forgetting how to play the number nine role, or as a symptom of his frustration at the lack of chances being created by those in deeper positions.

Whichever it is, for me, the problem isn't so much Rooney as the team, and this is why I think we were right to sell. If they're playing poor opposition like Brugge, or United somehow manage to click creatively, then I don't doubt that he'll start racking up the goals, and put away the chances that they lay on for him. I referred to Sanchez and Aguero's wastefulness in the last couple of games, but really, from our perspective, you have to go for the player getting lots of chances, rather than the one getting none.

Hard to know, I've no regret ditching him out though. He does generally go in bursts, but brugge were abysmal. The depay bandwagon was in full swing after two last week, only to blank against a shocking Newcastle side.

Rooney no doubt will be the same, he's too pricey too take a risk on; think a lot of people who dismissed him most likely upgraded to aguero, I think he will far outscore him over the course of the season.

The system lvg plays worked well against brugge, but as yet in the league very slow paced, little creativity and no support for Rooney. As few have also mention fixtures are a mixed bag from now, I'd be inclined to monitor rather than jump. He could well go on a run but I think there are far better options pricewise who will score similar with better fixtures; gomis, diouf, benteke looks like gonna hit some form.

For 2 odd million less I'd take a pint elsewhere, midfield so many good options too, Silva, hazard (eventually) Sanchez plus some great mid rangers - having aguero and Rooney plus sum other high end mids would damage team balance badly to me.

Cue Rooney brace v Swansea 🙂

I only bought him at the start of the season as Aguero was doubtful. I shipped him early and no regrets. He will score goals and isn't a rubbish player, but isn't someone I want at the minute. If he starts banging them in then of course I'll assess how to get him back in my team.

Any thoughts on these potential moves?

Darmian out for Skrtel. Liverpool look good for a clean sheet this week and ahead, but I think ManU do too.

Gomis out for Wilson. Yeah, yeah, yeah, what a knee jerker, I know, I've heard it all before. But looking at the immediate fixtures Wilson looks the better bet for goals. However, I'm keen to see how Gomis does against a tough defence at home to see if he really can score regularly.

Maverick move that only occured to me in a moment of clarity while washing up last night .....Payet out for Chadli. Chadli looks great value, reasonable fixtures and a superb differential. Payet hasn't done anything wrong really. He has a bad fixture this week, where I'd probably bench anyway, but with Newcastle in gwk 5 I feel I may regret the move. Chadli does excite me though.

Damian out for Skrtel would definitely tempt me, would you bench Payet and play Hoolahan?
I'm in two minds about Gomis, I kind of feel like if you wouldn't immediately invest the funds you'd save from getting rid, it's better to stick with him.

I'm currently debating Payet and Gomis out for Pedro and Wilson (-4). Have the exact funds too..

Darmian out for Skrtel? Darmian's been solid as a rock, and great going forward to. Seems a bit of a sideways move to me.

Gomis for Wilson i'm in favour of, I transferred Wilson in for Deeney this week and believe Bournemouth have the fixtures (and he has the stats) to justify this move.

Payet for Chadli is also a bit sideways. Tottenham undoubtedly the better team, but with Heung Son-Min expected to join and Clinton N'Jie also being able to play in the channels, Chadli's position in the team could be under some threat. Payet is locked in and will be a consistent assists machine, albeit in a weaker team.

Chadli is the one i'm quietly confident about.

His stats aren't that encouraging, but I think as a whole Spurs are only just getting match fit after a late pre season start. His movement has been good and he's playing very advanced - almost alongside Kane. His goal involvement is also 67% so far 😉

The only blemishes would be the tough immediate fixture and Eriksen's absence.

Darmian to Skrtel are you mad?

Agree with Gomis. I am doing 2 things this weekend. 1 watch Gomis against top defence and assessing pesto once more. Then it could be Gomis to Wilson. Payet to Pedro.

Chadli? I'm not sure. He or you are yet to convince me.

      Thanks knee jerker. 😉

Chadli not a bad move. Ive currently got him. His stats haven't looked great, but he's got points (he has a habit of doing that!) so far and will likely continue to do so - potentially strong value at 7m.

    19. Geordienufc1
      • 10 Years

Boring, but I'd save, even though I agree that all 3 moves would probably see you up on the deal this particular week.

The point you yourself made was very valid as to the benefit of holding 2FTs as insurance against the inevitable surprises of the international break (injuries etc.).

Cheers all. I'll probably do nothing but those three options are all tempting.

At least I'll have the security blanket of 2 frees over the international break. Plus I get an extra week's worth of informaton about Wilson, gomis and the rest.

That's true. Darmian hasn't done anything wrong either. Also while attack wise manU's fixtures aren't great they look so strong at the back at the moment. Darmian and Shaw are looking excellent.

I don't like Courtois due to Chelsea being poor at the back, not getting enough save points & he's expensive. Would prefer Butland.

DF is decent enough, but Taylor will be dropped soon.

MF, I would go Silva over Yaya all day, not that Yaya is a bad pick, just that Silva has looked out of this world in City's opening fixtures. Wanyama > Westwood (no brainer)

I did Rooney, Sakho, Sterling. Deeney and Ivan ---> Aguero, Tekkers, Yaya, Wison and Azpil on my WC and now have:

    --------------Schemeichel------------

    ---------Azpil - Kosc - Gomez-----

    Hazard - Yaya - Depay - Marhez

Thing with Ozil is new, STO is a pretty decent pair of fixtures up next so he could score well also given how much he is creating.

If only he would get hat tricks in the league games! I fear another 1 point cameo off the bench unfortunately... you think he'll start?

Im not sure id do any of the above. IF youre looking to WC shortly then Coates to Sagna should get you a CS this week

Hey KoL. I think the timing of the WC is pretty key also - currently between playing it next week or saving it until GW13. Coates -> Sagna kinda ties me into next week as I expect him to be a pretty big rotation risk in a couple of weeks. Also, who to bench this week if doing that, Shaw?

If youre WCn next week then id get Sagna and bench Shaw this week. Sagna wont play longer term but could be a quick fi for some points.

If youre WCn GW 13 then id probably save your transfer this week.

Its a strong squad you've built yourself here.

Out of interest why GW13? I am looking at GW8 as my def rotation goes to the dogs and theres a good fixture swing

GW13/14 has a good fixture swing too for Chelsea/Everton.

Personally looking at GW8 - some great fixtures for mix of top and mid tier teams. Palace and Newcastle's fixtures intrigue me + WBA defensively.

Exactly what im looking at, hopefully Olssen can keep his spot and give us a 4.5 option

Thing is, if WCing next week then surely Shaw -> Kolarov is the move?

Quite a big fixture swing for ARS and CHE in GW13, but GW8 or as late as possibly could also be a good option. I'm currently swayin towards playing it next week though. You not tempted?

Aye Kolarov is also an option. As much as I love the guy I cant see Clichy sitting out forever so for security I would go Sagna but that might just be me.

Ah fair enough, ill have a look. Not looking to WC next week quite happy with my squad for the coming fixtures

              Ruddy
              Cedric Richards Francis (Huth Jenkinson)
              Silva Hazard Chadli Mahrez Ozil
              Aguero Wilson (Sahko)

Doubts over Sahko but im not playing him until 14th of Sept so he should hopefully be ok.

Why are some planning to WC during the international break? Isn't that when FFS and FPL in general become a deadzone with hardly any price changes?

There may be significant njuries and also the transfer window will be closed so we can get in Benzema KDB and Neymar

You never really make any money on WC anyway (beyond getting players at lower prices) so that doesn't really matter. The main thing is it allows for the transfer window to close and for one to adjust to international injuries. Oh and it gives you something to do for 2 weeks 😉

And injuries/transfer window closing .. and price rises and falls are similar(if not slightly more) than most single break weeks

Agree. I think I'll be wild carding during the break, but I think the largest price change flux was last GW.
