Scout Scribbles – Rooney Finds His Form

Wayne Rooney fires a hat-trick as United ease into the Champions League group stages. Romelu Lukaku bags a brace as Everton overcome battling Barnsley. Moussa Sissoko is on course for a weekend return, Julian Speroni steps up his recovery, whilst Sadio Mane remains doubtful for Southampton.

Rooney Fires United into Group Stages

Manchester United coasted through to the group stages of the Champions League courtesy of a Wayne Rooney hat-trick. Ander Herrera bagged a goal and assist in a 4-0 win against Club Brugges, while Juan Mata, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Memphis Depay delivered the final passes for the other strikes. Louis van Gaal named just two changes from the XI that drew 0-0 with Newcastle, drafting Michael Carrick and Herrera in for Morgan Schneiderlin and Schweinsteiger at the double pivot. Javier Hernandez missed a penalty in the 81st minute.

The Scout Says: In the wake of three successive blanks on the goal front, Rooney’s ownership is plummeting fast across the Fantasy games. Nonetheless, for those 26% of FPL managers still in possession of the United frontman, Rooney’s confidence-boosting performance away from the home comforts of Old Trafford offers hope ahead of a trip to Swansea this Sunday. Herrera impressed in his first start of the campaign, particularly when he was pushed into the number ten role following the substitution of Adnan Januzaj at the break. The latter’s chances of claiming a starting berth at the Liberty Stadium now look slim off the back of two lackluster performances, with Herrera and suspension-free Marouane Fellaini looking the likeliest candidates to take up the central support berth against Garry Monk’s in-form outfit .

Lukaku Brace Seals Toffees’ Passage

Everton triumphed 5-3 over League One opponents Barnsley after their League Cup Second Round clash ended 3-3 in regulation time. Romelu Lukaku continued his fine scoring form with a brace, whilst Kevin Mirallas and Steven Naismith etched their names onto the scoresheet, with an own goal accounting for the Toffees’ breakthrough in extra time. Roberto Martinez elected to field a strong side, with Arouna Kone, James McCarthy, Ross Barkley and Tim Howard the only notable first-teamers not included in the starting line-up. Barkley and Gerard Deulofeu were called upon at half time to assist the rescue effort and achieved just that, with the former grabbing an assist and the Spaniard staking his claim for a starting role with a trio of assists at Oakwell.

The Scout Says: Although Lukaku’s 18.5% ownership will have been delighted to watch the Belgian marksman net his third and fourth goals of the season, they’ll be slightly concerned by the fact he lasted the full 122 minutes just three days before they’re set to host Spurs at Goodison Park. Furthermore, it was clearly Martinez’s intention to afford Barkley the night off, yet the situation necessitated his involvement – which amounted to 77 minutes in all. The attacking returns from Mirallas, Naismith and Deulofeu highlight the competition for places at the wide berths in Everton’s 4-2-3-1 set-up, ensuring that Kone and Cleverley are one slip-up away from relinquishing their slots. With the short-term schedule very much against then, though, few will be prepared to snap up any Everton players until the fixtures turn in their favour around Gameweek 11.

Magpies Hopeful on Sissoko

Moussa Sissoko could be available for selection when Newcastle host Arsenal on Saturday, having stepped up his recovery from the groin strain he sustained in Gameweek 2. Speaking to the local press, Steve McClaren revealed:

“He has been out on the grass, so we will take it a day at a time. It’s touch and go, but it would be nice to get him back, and also Daryl (Janmaat) is back, so we started the week well, continued it and we have a pretty big game on Saturday now.”

The Scout Says: Although Ayoze Perez performed admirably on the right flank against Manchester United – particularly with regards to his tracking back – Sissoko is likely to reclaim his starting berth against the Gunners. Gabriel Obertan has been deployed on the left wing for the Magpies’ opening trio of match-ups, yet the starring display from new recruit Florian Thauvin (one goal and three assists) during their 4-1 victory over Northampton Town could convince Steve McClaren to hand the Frenchman his maiden league start. Priced at 6.5, Thauvin tallied more assists (seven) and racked up key passes at greater frequency (one every 47.1 minutes) than any Toon midfielder last term.

Speroni Steps Up Recovery

Having returned to light training on Wednesday, Julian Speroni is expected to return to full training next week as he continues his rehabilitation from a finger injury:

The Scout Says: Despite the fact that Crystal Palace face the hardest upcoming trio of fixtures (che, MCI, tot) of any side in the league, Alex McCarthy – who’s served as the Eagles’ stand-in shot-stopper while Speroni has been sidelined – boasts an 11% ownership by virtue of his budget 4.0 price tag. Given that the forntight’s international break is just around the corner, there’s a chance that Speroni could well be between the sticks for Palace at the Etihad, lumbering McCarthy owners with a non-playing keeper that’s bound to drop in price.

Mixed Injury News for Saints

Ronald Koeman revealed that Victor Wanyama has not travelled with Southampton’s squad ahead of their Europa League clash with FC Midtjylland due to a stomach bug, while he remains optimistic that Sadio Mane will recover from the hip complaint that forced him off against Watford last weekend:

“Victor didn’t travel with the team because he is ill and the latest update from the doctor is that he has a stomach infection. We found out Victor wasn’t coming on the trip this morning. I have to believe the doctor. I hope he will be available for the weekend but we will have to wait. Sadio is doubtful. Normally he will do the beginning of the session (on Wednesday), separate of the team. Maybe he can be involved in the second part.”

The Scout Says: Mane’s potential return could be good news for his owners ahead of the weekend home encounter with Norwich. Although the Senegal international has failed to score this season, Koeman’s decision to switch to 3-4-1-2 at Vicarage Road, handing Mane a spot up front alongside Graziano Pelle, boosts his potential as an out of position prospect. Wanyama is the preferred budget midfield option in the FPL game this season – the 4.5-priced Kenyan sits in over 14% of sides and helped his side earn their first clean sheet of the season last time out. With fellow defensive midfielder Jordy Clasie still on the sidelines through injury, those holding Saints defenders will be hoping Wanyama recovers in time to offer protection to the Saints backline against a Norwich side that sits third for attempts on goal (55) after three rounds of fixtures.

So I have Payet + Sakho. Taking them both to Anfield isn't obviously the greatest thing. Bilic has just said he expects him to train tomorrow but there is still a slight doubt.

    So:

    A) Diouf -4

    B) Play Sakho

Yes, well looking at stats for previous seasons ~45% of all games resulted in home wins. This season has obviously been a lot different but I don't think you can use that as an argument, just an outlier per se.

Stoke in decent scoring form, WBA have been very leaky recently too. That said, think I might stick with Sakho

3, Mahrez has already scored as many goal's as last season, and if you get him now your effectively giving away 0.5m in team value, to those who got in early.

You are right, and it definitily was one of many reasons for my shite season that year. Still, one player doesnt make it the rule and scoring freely for Arsenal is different than for Leicester.

I'm sure there are 6.0m or less players out there who will score more than Mahrez between now and the end of the season. We just need a crystal ball to identify which.

Giving rivals team value? That's a pretty weak argument.

Evaluate the player, his form, his fixtures, his role for the team and you'll see Mahrez is up their with the best value mids. If you are one to look at it this way, his ownership is ~25% and rising, so any further large hauls and you'll be in strife.

Ahhh, yes. I recall the following,

"A player must have been in the league for over eight days before transfers count towards the threshold value. This locking period can be extended to the start of a new Gameweek if the completion of the eight days period falls within an international break."

but hadn't realised the nuance for the extension only being around international breaks.

He isn't gonna rise anyway unfortunately. I can only hope my taking of a hit pays offer anyway, and my ML opponents remain slow on the uptake to his rise next week

          ...following his brace 😆

Could get up to 15 points from that bench, and let's face it, when will you have a better opportunity really? Your bench is never going to be very strong, so when you have decent enough fixtures for your bench, may be wise to use it.

Swansea may very well target Blind at centre back but Shaw is looking stronger and more dangerous, can see him getting an assist or two over the next few game weeks.

Guys, I notice there is a lot of Liverpool love on here at the moment and have even read a few Darmian to Skrtel.

United have conceded one own goal in 5 games. Liverpool have been very lucky and should have only kept 1 clean sheet, but due to linesman and ref errors, the goals were incorrectly ruled out...their defence isn't as solid as people think, IMO

Anyway, hope this little reminder of disallowed goals is helpful.

I thought everyone was past the stage?

Liverpool well and truly showed their defensive capabilities last season. They have looked good so far this season, and our fixtures have arguably been tougher than United's.

Whether or not they will provide more CS than United I cannot say, but they will certainly get clean sheets

      1. Jonny Bananas

They certainly did, and Mingolet got stronger throughout the season.

But that still doesn't deny the fact that they should have only had one cleanie this season, so they're not as strong as the points indicate.

I have Gomez and shall be playing him, it's just sometimes i think people concentrate on stats and fantasy scores rather than actually paying attention to what happened in the game.

Darmian to Skrtel sounds like madness to me and several people on the previous page have discussed this move, was just trying to help, not stir up United vs Liverpool beef, sorry if that's how it came across.

i was simply providing a reminder that if those goals had have been allowed, as they should have..that would give Pool 1 CS in 3...would people still speak highly of them...that's all. This isn't an attack on Liverpool

Oh I get that mate, and you make a valid point. But I would argue, not purely for the sake of defending Liverpool (who are my club), that while they should have conceded to Bournemouth and could (it was a tight call) have conceded at the Emirates, the love for Liverpool defenders is a confidence in their upcoming fixtures, personally at least. Although, I imagine there are a fair few casuals who are not seeing the underlying facts of our 0 in the Goals Against column. Hence why I say, you do make a valid point.

Couple of quickies about my WC team:

    a) Best 4.5 keeper?

Currently on Schemeichel but Guzan fixtures look great for next 3 GWs and Butland or Ruddy's aren't too bad either.

    b) Kosc or Kolorov?

No other Arsenal cover and already have Yaya and Aguero but City fixtures are fit!

    c) Defender for 4.8 (or under)

    This will mostly be benched

    Appreciate your thoughts guys! 😀

I'd avoid Sagna, Zab back in a few games and I read Otamendincan play RB too. As not nailed as Kolorov might be, Sagna is a 2 to 3 week punt at best!

I have 2 free transfers and want to get Aguero in. 1.3 ITB

    Sterling Cabaye Mahrez Hazard Payet
    Rooney Deeney Pelle

So Rooney -> Aguero and which midfielder do I lose?
Or Pelle -? Aguero and probably have to drop Hazard.

    Thoughts?

Who's the better choice out of Monreal and Bellerin? Last season's stats seems to favour Bellerin, but this year's seem much in favour of Monreal.

Monreal looks better for consistent baps but Bellerin more explosive with goal and assist potential.

I think there is better options out there across other teams in that price bracket but if I had to go for one I'd be tempted with Monreal as he's only up against Gibbs and he's never fit

Hi Everyone, first time posting my time but I'm looking for advice. Played my WC last week and had a decent result, although Wilson was on the bench! Looking for some Chelsea coverage, maybe Pedro, but unsure who to replace. I have 0.5 in the bank and my free transfer.

    Butland - Ruddy
    Kolarov - Darmian - Bellerin - Francis - Oxford
    Alexis - Yaya - Mahrez - Payet - Shaqiri
    Aguero -- Wilson - Gomis

    Thanks

I'd save the transfer and have another look at how Pedro plays this week.

Then if you still want him next week...

Payet + Shaqiri > Pedro + Westwood (or other 4.5/5.0 option).

    Off topic rant incoming.

I got asked at the end of last term by my sons special school if I'd be able to help clear the gardens all next week before the kids return to school...."Yes, more than happy to" says I.

Head teacher just rang to arrange time and asked if I had a CRB check..."no"...

"Sorry" says the head "I'm afraid we can't let you help"...

What sort of effing world do we live in...!!...I offer to help and end up feeling like some sort of criminal...There won't even be any kids there for gods sake !!

My partner had to be CRB checked for helping out at our son's school with school trips and reading to kids who need extra help. But crucially the school paid for that. They said you are giving your time up - we'll cover the cost of that check.

The head teacher should have said the same and offered to sort for you - that way he's got a long term volunteer parent on the books. I'd perhaps have a word with the chair of governors about that. Ask at the office. The head reports to the governing board. Basically go above the head's head so to speak. That's what I always do when confronted with something unfair.

    Azpi - Mert - Huth - Cedric - Staylor
    Ayew - Mane - Payet - Ozil - Fletcher
    Kun - Wilson - Sakho

With Mane, Mert and Sakho doubts for the weekend, would you wildcard this team? If so, would you bring in Costa on Wildcard, or use the money elsewhere?

    WC team right now is

    Rutland
    Gomez - Kolarov - Francis - Huth - Targett
