Moving Target

Moving Target – Jonny Evans

Tony Pulis continued the reshaping of his West Brom squad on Saturday with the signing of Jonny Evans from Manchester United in a deal reported to be worth up to £8 million. The Northern Ireland international has penned a four-year contract at the Hawthorns, and could make his debut against Southampton on September 12.

Speaking about his latest addition, Pulis spoke of his happiness at being able to bring the experienced defender to West Brom:

“This is a great signing for the club. Jonny brings a lot of experience and will be a big player for us – he’s a player I’ve been watching for some time and we are delighted to have him.”

THE HISTORY

After being spotted playing for his local side Greenisland FC by Man United as a youngster, Evans eventually joined the Red Devils in 2004 after his family relocated to Manchester, with his younger brother Corry also part of the United youth setup.

He made a handful of appearances for the first-team during pre-season in 2006, although Evans then spent the first half of the year on loan at United’s Belgian feeder club Royal Antwerp, where he made 11 appearances, scoring two goals. The defender then spent the second half of the 2006/07 campaign on loan at Sunderland, and helped the Black Cats to promotion to the Premier League.

Evans made his United debut in the League Cup against Coventry in September 2007, but was then again sent out on loan to Sunderland for the second half of the 2007/08 season, and helped Roy Keane’s side retain their top-flight status.

The Northern Ireland international never properly established himself as a first choice at Old Trafford, with the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons perhaps being his most successful, when he racked up 52 league appearances, scoring four goals. In total during his time at Old Trafford, Evans managed 131 appearances.

The 27-year-old defender made his international debut against Spain in September 2006 in a memorable 3-2 victory. He currently has 41 caps to his name, and has scored one goal, against Poland in 2009.

THE PROSPECTS

Given his pedigree as a three-time Premier League winner, it’s expected that Evans will command a regular spot at centre-back for the Baggies. He will primarily be competing against James Chester, Gareth McAuley and Jonas Olsson for a place in the starting XI, with Joleon Lescott now out of the picture following his move to Aston Villa. Craig Dawson is expected to remain at right-back after he started the season as a centre-half.

The main reason why Evans may soon be on the radar of Fantasy managers is his kind price tag of 4.8 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). His cost has fallen by 0.2 already this season, having failed to feature so far at Old Trafford, and with Dawson (5.0), McAuley (5.0) and Chester (4.9) all more expensive, looks a great route into the Baggies backline. Olsson is cheaper at 4.5, but while he has started the last three matches, it seems unlikely that the Swede will keep his place in Pulis’ XI. Chris Brunt, who has regularly lined up at left-back for the Baggies under Pulis, is listed as a midfielder in FPL.

Looking at last season’s statistics, Evans is only behind Chester for tackles (2.4 to 2.3) per match out of the four leading contenders, while he averaged 1.8 interceptions per game last term, the same number as McAuley, more than Olsson (1.1), but once again, less than Chester, who managed 2.3 per 90 minutes at Hull. Out of the four players, he ranked second for clearances with 5.1 per match, bettered only by McAuley with 6.1.

West Brom have managed to keep clean sheets in two of their last three matches, although their task was made easier on Saturday with Stoke being reduced to nine men early on at the Britannia. Whilst Pulis’ men have allowed 32 goal attempts from inside their own box this season – which is the eighth most in the top flight – you have to factor in clashes with City and Chelsea already, where they conceded six times.

Indeed, with 12 shut-outs registered in 22 matches under the Welshman so far, there’s no doubt the Baggies defensive assets are worth serious consideration for FPL bosses, particularly given their favourable upcoming fixtures (SOT, avl, EVE, cpl, SUN, nor).

Given that McAuley has started every league match when available for Pulis, he certainly looks a secure pick but if, as expected, Evans partners his fellow Irishman in the heart of the Baggies defence against Southampton next time out, his 0.2% ownership figure should steadily rise over the next few months.

Hey guys, what are your thoughts on Scott Sinclair as a 5th mid at 4.9? Seems like he is coming to some form with goals in his locker, any reason I should stay clear?

He is a rotation risk but at the price worth the risk if you fancy it. I have been tempted to bring him in this week for Westwood and bench Diouf.

I'm thinking of getting Scott Sinclair too. Yes, slight rotation risk, but great value, on some set pieces, great form, confident. Doubt Sherwood will immediately drop him while he's playing this well. Certainly worth the risks at that price, in my opinion. (Had an amazing record at Swansea, tons of assists; if he can attain that form at Villa he's a bargain.)

I want him in my WC. Sounds stupid, but he's almost potentially too good to be a 5th mid, will quite likely have frustrating points on bench on a regular basis.

I'm happy with my team except my g/k. I have Butland/McCarthy & 1 ft & 1.5itb. Lots of options I could go for & with so few cs's on offer I've reckon the g/k with the best potential save points is the one to go for. Newcastle seem to be fit into this category & I've read some good comments about how good Krul has been performing. I reckon he'll get plenty of save points away to West Ham.

    Thoughts on McCarthy to Krul.

I like it. Except the front 8; you will have to get used to benching points. Redmond to Sinclair IMO so he can be a 'playing type of 5th mid'. And use the money ITB to upgrade McCarthy to Krul

Thank you both. Not a bad shout re Sinclair, just really like the look of Redmond but agree I'll struggle to fit him into my starting XI most weeks. Definitely think Krul is a better shout than McCarthy? Could also use the extra money to upgrade Gomez (e.g. to Skrtel / Shaw).

Have this front 8 ATM with 1FT

    Sanchez | Pedro | Ayew | Mahrez | Chadli

    Aguero | Gomis | Wilson

I can't figure out who to bench this week and am highly considering playing the AOA Chip. If I play the AOA chip I have to bench on of these 3:

    A) Darmian (LIV)
    B) Jenkinson (NEW)
    C) Kolarov (cpl)

Or I could use my free transfer, was also considering doing

    1) Jenkinson > Francis to free up funds and play AOA without a headache that I'll have points on the bench.
    2) Chadli >

    1. Ëð
      • 8 Years

Don't use the AOA chip, wait for a DGW. But you are too heavy across the midfield I think. I'd consider probably downgrading Chadli with your FT and then using the funds to improve your team else where in the coming weeks. I'd say no David Silva is a gamble too.

      1. John t penguin
        • 9 Years

how is DGW a good time to use AOA?
likely there may only be two DGW, you are probably going to use the other two chips on those as the offer better returns than AOA.
AOA should be used when you can see only having two playing defenders to save a transfer or when you have a really promising week for all your attackers and poor week for your defenders.
all you are doing is swapping a defender for a mid, it would be waste of DGW to use this chip then

I think it's likely there is going to be more than 2 DGWs where you'd want to have a full front 3 and midfield 5. I might be wrong but until I know further on the DGWs I'm holding out.

fair enough, but it is still only one player and you could just as easily have a DGW defender as a cheap DGW mid.
for me the best time is during winter when the chances are due to call offs or suspension you could have only two playing defenders and this would save you a wasted transfer

There's no way you're going to be able to populate your team with a glut of DGW players twice in a season (I'm thinking Bench Boost as well). You could use your WC to arrange a team for your Bench Boost, but as JT's Dog says, you're not likely to have all 8 attacking players on a DGW to make the AOA worth holding for one of those weeks.

AOA is best used simply when you're short of defensive players through injury or suspension, or they all have shocking fixtures, or you have a really strong player (good fixture) from your benched attacking player (assuming you normally plater 352 of 343).

agreed. I had aguero+yaya until now, but sold yaya this week. Silva has been stellar so far, true, but with KDB, Yaya, Silva, and even Fernandinho to choose from, it becomes too easy to make the wrong choice and it may be better spending the £££ elsewhere

    This is my current team;

    Ruddy
    Azpi - Cedric - Huth
    Silva - Mane - Ritchie - Mahrez - Payet
    Aguero - Benteke
    Subs: Butland, Mert, Diouf, Francis

When should I look to WC? Watching De Bruyne for first couple weeks and maybe do Cedric to Van Dijk. Not happy with Benteke either although his fixtures may improve.

Also not happy with the amount of money on my bench. Rotation choices starting to get tricky!

If Mert is back, play him instead of Benteke in a 4-5-1. I don't see Liverpool scoring past United without Coutinho at Old Trafford. You don't need to WC yet, this is pretty much similar to the WC teams with a couple of differentials such as Ritchie.

Need a bit of help lads!

    a) time to lose Chelsea def? Mourinho's team is gaining pace offence-wise, but Terry/Ivanovic remain very unstable and it does not feel many clean sheets are coming… feels like WBA or Stoke may be a better option
    b) Sanchez… feels like last chance vs Stoke… not worth having 11.0 mid with close to 0 FPL points despite the great stats
    c) any suggestions? feels like I need to get a WBA def asap

    Thanks!

    McCarthy (butland)
    Targett, Kolarov, Williams (azpi,gomez)
    Sanchez, Ayew, Mahrez, Pedro (westwood)
    Wilson, Benteke, Aguero

thanks for advice! hope you are right on Sanchez… what makes you think Chelsea def will come good? as i said i think terry/ivanovic (and even cahill) are getting too old/slow, and the fast wingers are doing whatever they want with them (remember what montero did to ivanovic? or sterling? or even Sako in the last gw)

    Morning all,

    Butland / McCarthy

    Kolarov / Richards / Ward / Gomez / S Taylor

    Pedro / Sanchez / Ayew / Mahrez / Toure

    Wilson / Aguero / Gomis

    1.0ITB

I'm tempted by West Brom defense. Evans / Dawson

The 1.0ITB is burning a hole in my pocket....

if you want Man Utd def, get a defender. De Gea - who knows if he will play at all this season. Otherwise, team looks good, very similar to mine too (with the exception of Azpi instead of Bellerin)

    Sanchez, Pedro, Ayew, Antonio/Sako, Mahrez,
