Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – International Round Up

Sergio Aguero scores twice and provides three assists as Argentina thrash Bolivia. Mesut Ozil recovers from illness to turn out for Germany, Anthony Martial is handed his senior debut for France, whilst Gareth McAuley bags a brace for Northern Ireland.

Aguero Runs Riot against Bolivia

Sergio Aguero played a part in five of Argentina’s goals in a 7-0 home win over Bolivia last night. The City striker scored twice and laid on three assists before being replaced on 80 minutes. Everton new boy Ramiro Funes Mori played from start to finish in the heart of defence, keeping the likes of United’s Marcos Rojo, along with City pair Martin Demichelis and Nicholas Otamendi, on the bench.

The Scout Says: Having struggled for form in the opening four Gameweeks, Aguero’s display suggests he’s building up his match sharpness over the international break after returning to training later due to his Copa America exertions. A disappointing blank at home to Watford last time out took his tally to one league goal so far and has persuaded over 15,000 FPL managers to sell the 13.2-priced frontman since the end of Gameweek 4, but last night’s showing suggests they could regret that decision. Still sitting in over 32% of sides, there’s plenty of reason for optimism once he returns to domestic action, as the league leaders prepare for a superb run of opponents (cpl, WHM, tot, NEW, BOU, mun, NOR, avl) in the next eight Gameweeks.

Martial Handed Les Bleus Debut

Anthony Martial’s week to remember continued last night after the United new boy earned his debut during France’s 1-0 win over Portugal. Martial was initially named amongst the subs but replaced Karim Benzema up front with 16 minutes remaining.

The Scout Says: Whilst he failed to get in the goals, last night’s step up in status will surely be a confidence boost for the youngster ahead of his debut for the Old Trafford outfit. Didier Deschamps is clearly a big fan, calling him “a huge talent” and now looks set to integrate the youngster into the France senior squad ahead of next year’s Euro 2016. The French now host Serbia on Monday evening and Martial could even be poised for a first start as he looks to stake a claim for a starting berth for the Red Devils ahead of next weekend’s home encounter with bitter rivals Liverpool.

Ozil Back in Action

Having missed Arsenal’s Gameweek 4 trip to Newcastle, Mesut Ozil recovered from illness to play the full 90 minutes in Germany’s 3-1 win over Poland last night.

The Scout Says: The playmaker’s return is good news for the Gunners, who have yet to fully fire in the first four Gameweeks. Arsene Wenger’s side have managed just three goals, with Ozil earning an assist, though one look at the underlying stats indicates they’ve been more than unlucky – Arsenal lead the way for shots (83) and efforts inside the box (56) but have found the net with just 3.6% of their chances. Ozil has been sold by over 43,000 FPL managers since missing out at St James’ but now looks set to return to the first-team fold ahead of a mixed schedule which pits the north London club against Stoke, Chelsea, Leicester and United in the next four rounds of fixtures.

McAuley Double Earns Ireland the Points

Gareth McAuley bagged a brace for Northern Island as they moved to the top of their Euro 2016 qualifying group courtesy of a 3-1 away win over the Faroe Islands. West Bromwich Albion team-mate Chris Brunt turned provider for McAuley’s second header of the night.

The Scout Says: McAuley’s brace arrives at a time where the Baggies are prepared for a strong run of fixtures (SOU, avl, EVE, cry, SUN, nor, LEI) in the upcoming Gameweeks. Owing to injuries and rotation, predicting the exact composition of Tony Pulis’ backline has been a futile endeavour so far this season. Craig Dawson (5.0) has been the only ever-present among their full roster of defenders, starting the season at centre-back, before shifting over to right-back to replace James Chester. Brunt, who recovered from a hamstring problem in time for last night’s match, looks set to claim control of the left-back berth with Joleon Lescott out of the picture, which leaves two centre-back slots up for grabs. McAuley and Jonas Olsson have partnered up for the West Midlanders’ previous three match-ups yet the arrival of Jonny Evans (4.8) looks bad news for the latter, given that McAuley has been selected for every league match he’s been available for by Pulis. Although West Brom have shipped six goals in their last two home ties – albeit against Chelsea and Manchester City – two clean sheets in the last three suggests they are rediscovering the resilience that served up 16 shut-outs in the season gone by.

Long in the Goals

Shane Long nodded home the final goal as the Republic of Ireland recorded a 4-0 win over Gibraltar, having replaced man of the match Robbie Keane at the 71-minute mark.

The Scout Says: It’s been a tough start domestically for the Southampton striker, who has been named in the first XI in only one of the opening four Gameweeks. With Dusan Tadic and Sadio Mane excelling on the flanks in a 4-2-3-1 set-up against Norwich last time out, and lone striker Graziano Pelle also netting against the Canaries, Long looks unlikely to break into Ronald Koeman’s starting line-up anytime soon. A testing run of upcoming matches (wba, MUN, SWA, che) is likely to deter most from considering the Saints’ regulars, though potential suitors may wish to revaluate Southampton’s main men from Gameweek 9 onwards, with a view to capitalise on a favourable run of matches (LEI, liv, BOU, sun, STO) thereafter.

Tip no. 2 Dont make transfers before all the international games and most players are involved and therefore at risk of injury.

Haha, well I can't find anything wrong with BB to be honest 😉

Try these if you like shows, especially the dark thrillers:

            Fargo
            Banshee
            Justified
            Luther

no nothing wrong with BB per se but I found myself having to re watch episodes to remind myself what was going on.

Watched Fargo, was good but the film was superior in every way.

I have seen a few Luther episodes which are decent and Im sure I will watch more at some point.

Will have a look at the others, do you know if they are on Netflix?

Has the 1st international break become the worst time to wildcard?

Traditional wisdom has it that you have 2 weeks to play the transfer market and you can move out players who get injured at no cost.

The problem is that because of the risk of injury very few managers make their transfers early. As we have seen this week the risers and fallers have slowed to a trickle. It looks like that far from having an extended window in which to play the market the reality is that all the transfer activity is likely to be compressed into just 2 or 3 days after the internationals are played leaving little opportunity to take advantage of 0.2 risers.

In addition we know now that wildcard transfers do not count towards price movement. The 1st international break will probably see the highest % of wildcards used of any week in the 1st half of the season thus further reducing the pool of transfers contributing towards price changes.

Players wildcarding this week will likely already have missed out on many of the early bandwagons that managers who have wildcarded previously have jumped on and will also likely to have seen some of their players already drop in value. There is also no significant fixture change this week to exploit.

The only factor that might still make wildcarding this week a viable proposition is if there are a significant number of important injuries incurred during the internationals. All in all, given the paucity of early price changes, it may be wiser for managers considering wildcarding this week to delay activating their wildcard until they can see if these injuries actually materialise. They are unlikely to lose out much in the market and can pull the plug on the planned wildcard if their team doesn't look like it needs major changes.

Yes it all changed a couple of years back. FPL realised all the FFSers were playing WCs during the breaks to manipulate and maximise TVs.
They tweaked it. And for the better, imo.

I think it's a big stretch to say that it's the worst time to wildcard. The best time to wildcard is when your team needs it the most - that's it!

If you're talking about wildcarding purely to take advantage of price changes, then yep, its a bit of a myth that the international break is a good time for that. However, it still has its advantages. The transfer window is closed, and four weeks is a decent period to judge form and first choice line ups.

For example, someone wildcarding this week knows that Myhill has Lindegaard to compete with (whereas someone WCing in the last couple of weeks had a question mark there), they know that Gomis and Mahrez are unlikely to be a flash in the pan, etc.

So, tied between 2 captaincy choices now. Was going to stick with Mahrez but Sanchez is looking at me from my team as if he's going to explode 🙁

    A) Alexis Sanchez
Arsenal have had the most shots. Stoke haven't kept a clean sheet yet. Sanchez's stats look great and has had many chances but is yet to score which means this could be his perfect chance to explode. However, isn't really on form.

    B) Riyad Mahrez
On fire, can't stop scoring (except last match where he got subbed off at half time due to a knock). Aston Villa are poor defensively on the road and I reckon Leicester could potentially 'destroy' them. Mahrez is the 'Sanchez' of Leicester you could say and he is playing on Sunday at the 4:00pm game so nice telly viewing captain and the joy on Saturday that your captain is yet to play.

So who to give the armband provided Mahrez is fit?

          played 80 mins: 2
          2x goals: 8
          3x assists: 9
          bonus perhaps: 3

          Total: 22
          (C): 44

That's probably better than the average GW score so far this season.

Hustle, Fargo, The Killing, Luther, Banshee, Zen, Justified, Person of Interest, Firefly, Sherlock, Daredevil, Homeland, Dexter, White Collar, Community (1st 3 seasons), How to get away with murder, Jericho, FLashforward

Above all: The Walking Dead 😀

I think the Walking Dead is a bit of a let down. But I'm not sure if it's because I read the comics first.

Utopia. British tv show. Excellent concept, script and filmwork. 2 seasons. just finished the second season myself. A bit needlessly violent in parts, with quite graphic torture scenes. Otherwise one of the best shows I've seen in recent years.

Aye Utopia is pretty decent. And Black Mirror too if you want something along those lines.

24 was brilliant. Prison Break was brilliant (especially S1 and 3). Homeland first 3 seasons were good (haven't got around to watching 4 yet).

Hannibal? Really enjoyed the first couple of seasons, but the new season is utter tripe.

Season 3? Haven't watched it yet. The first two were really good.

Could i get a second opinion on this WC team please?

    Gomes, Lindegaard
    Cresswell, Gomez, Kolarov, Ward, Williams
    Silva, Sanchez, Ayew, Mahrez, Hoolahan
    Aguero, Wilson, Diouf

    £1.4m ITB

Not seen many RMT posts since the discussion yesterday, are they being moved or are less people posting?

Was planning on having Fabianski in goal but Watford seem to be doing better than expecting defensively, and after starting with Lescott i dont want to opt for another £5m WBA defender to not play

Thought this site would be a bit more active than it is now because there is a break lol. Yeh Friday will be back to normal.

Ive missed the price changes on Gomis and rather have Ayew. Also Stoke have some really nice upcoming fixtures and feel as though Diouf will be getting fed balls

Also feel that i have a bit too much left in the bank but there are too many cheap players to pick up now.

        Thanks for the feedback!

Can't be bringing Lindegaard in at this stage, too risky to assume he will automatically be no.1

Yeh ive been weighing this up myself. Stuck between having Fabianski+Dawson or Lindegaard+Williams and prepare my next transfer on getting Myhill if he plays.

Looking at Fab last year he was rated very highly point wise for GKs, and Swansea look better this year round
