Scout Notes – Gameweek 8 – Sunday

Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Theo Walcott all serve up the points as Arsenal coast past United at the Emirates. Swansea’s Andre Ayew returns to form, though a pair of free-kicks from Christian Eriksen earns Tottenham a point at the Liberty. Danny Ings and Romelu Lukaku continue their fine recent showings as the first Merseyside derby of the season ends all square at Goodison.

Sanchez Stars as Gunners Run Riot Again

Having put five past Leicester last week, Arsenal blitzed Manchester United in a frenzied opening spell at the Emirates, netting all three of their goals before the 20-minute mark. Alexis Sanchez opened and closed the scoring, bagging a brace to complement his hat-trick last time out. The now 11.2-priced midfielder sits at a relatively modest 20% ownership but is sure to attract an influx of new owners in light of his sensational form – the wide man has earned more transfers in (90,000) than any player since the weekend. Sanchez was withdrawn after 81 minutes with a minor groin problem but will be fit to play for Chile during the international break.

Mesut Ozil claimed the host’s second of the afternoon with a clean strike, having set up Sanchez for the opener. The German international now boasts one goal and three assists in four outings yet many admirers will be inclined to plump for Theo Walcott instead, given that the jet-heeled Englishman appears to have cemented the lone striker berth – in his fifth straight league start, Walcott produced a pair of assists for his 4% ownership.

Arsenal served up their fourth clean sheet of the campaign and third at home, underlining the value of their defensive assets. With the league’s joint bottom scorers (Watford: six goals) next on the agenda, those Fantasy managers holding the likes of Nacho Monreal and Hector Bellerin will be quietly confident of further points in the immediate future. Intriguingly, Arsene Wenger’s side have kept out their opponents every time Gabriel (4.9) has played from start to finish this term, suggesting the Brazilian is worthy of a regular role.

United Chastened at the Emirates

The Red Devils suffered their second defeat of the season at the hands of Arsene Wenger’s troops, snapping a three-match winning streak. United have now conceded seven goals in their last three road ties, exposing a defensive vulnerability away from home that Everton and Crystal Palace will look to exploit over the next three Gameweeks (eve, MCI, cry).

The heavily-backed Anthony Martial (30% ownership) fashioned just one attempt across the course of the match – which Petr Cech expertly saved from close range with an outstretched leg. Despite his laudable scoring record, Martial owners might be concerned by the fact that the French frontman averages a shot just once every 52.3 minutes, having mustered only six efforts in four appearances. In saying that, the youngster has been consistent up until now – this was his first blank – whilst Juan Mata failed to get amongst the points for the first time since Gameweek 3.

Ayew Back in the Points

The Swans survived a late barrage of attacks in the second half of their encounter against Tottenham Hotspur to emerge with a well-deserved point. The end-to-end tie finished as a 2-2 stalemate, with Andre Ayew and Harry Kane (own goal) on the scoreboard for the Welsh outfit. The former has struggled to exert his influence in the past three Gameweeks but nodded home a sublime header after 16 minutes to highlight his finishing prowess. The 110,000 managers who have shipped him out since Gameweek 6 might now be regretting that decision as Swansea gear up for four strong match-ups (STO, avl, nor, BOU) in the next five.

Jonjo Shelvey and Jefferson Montero both grabbed their second assists of the campaign, while Lukasz Fabianski tallied a whopping nine saves. Elsewhere, Bafetimbi Gomis carded his fourth blank in succession and proved wasteful with his chances, failing to hit the target with any of his four attempts at goal. In spite of Swansea’s promising set of upcoming fixtures, Gomis’ 21% ownership might well have their heads turned by the surfeit of in-form alternatives in the mid-priced forward bracket.

Eriksen at the Double

Christian Eriksen scored two free-kick goals to announce his return to prominence on the Fantasy scene. The Danish playmaker (8.3) has chalked up two goals and assists since his reintroduction in Gameweek 6, offering an alternative to the likes of Juan Mata and Dimitri Payet around that price range. Considering that Spurs are unbeaten at home this term, the presence of four head-to-heads at White Hart Lane (LIV, AVL, WHU, CHE) over the next six Gameweeks bodes well for Eriksen’s attacking prospects.

Delle Alli (4.9) claimed the assist for both of Eriksen’s strikes, illustrating his potential to be a fine budget pick-up. The former MK Dons midfielder looks nailed on at the double pivot in light of his well-rounded performances alongside Eric Dier but is resting just one caution away from a one-match suspension. Speaking of the Suspension Tightrope, Dier toppled off this Gameweek after picking up his fifth yellow of the season, ruling him out of Liverpool’s visit on 17 October.

Ings Form Continues

Having taken the lead through a Danny Ings header – from a James Milner cross – Liverpool held out in the second period at Goodison Park to secure a 1-1 draw. The main talking point, however, was the dismissal of Brendan Rodgers, who was sacked an hour after the Merseyside derby. It remains to be seen what impact his replacement has on the Reds’ Fantasy prospects, with a bruising schedule (tot, SOU, che, CRY, mci, SWA) set to test the incoming manager’s credentials from the offset.

After a slow start to his career on Merseyside, Ings has now scored in three of his last five appearances for Liverpool. The 7.1-priced striker has clearly benefitted from being moved into a central role once again but his position could be under threat if the new boss doesn’t favour their current 3-4-1- 2 set-up – it’s perhaps ominous that bookies’ favourite Jurgen Klopp preferred a 4-2-3-1 set-up at former club Dortmund. Meanwhile, Milner has enjoyed a profitable run of late, notching one goal and two assists in his previous couple of starts. The all-action midfielder is priced fairly at 6.7 yet suffers from the above-mentioned tricky batch of fixtures.

Lukaku in the Goals Again

Romelu Lukaku lead by example for the second week running, netting his third strike in two outings as he moved up to third in the FPL forward standings. Although Everton’s next pair of fixtures (MUN, ars) aren’t that conducive to attacking returns, potential investors will be aware of the fact that they enjoy an excellent run of matches from Gameweek 11. Indeed, the Toffees will have played the top eight teams from last term by that point, encouraging investment across the board.

Brendan Galloway (4.5) deserves a mention for his excellent performances at left-back, affording his 1% ownership with a decent return on their outlay. The budget defender would serve as a prime option in his price bracket were it not for the imminent return of Leighton Baines, who may be in line for a return against Manchester United after the international break. Now pitched at 6.2 following his lengthy layoff, Baines’ unparalleled propensity for attacking returns among full-backs renders him an enticing acquisition leading up the New Year. At 5.4, though, Phil Jagielka remains the cheapest, and most reliable, of Roberto Martinez’s preferred back-four ahead of the Toffees’ fine schedule.

      😆

Mourinho post-match: "but when you're so down, I think it's time to be a little bit honest..."

Yes, Mou, be honest with yourself and your team and the whole world, just say it out loud, you're playing garbage football and will have to change things big time to compete.

Mou continues: "...and to say clearly, the referees are afraid to give decisions for Chelsea..."

Oh, that again, so much about the honesty... facepalm.

TO be honest, never considered to get him in. Just not a fan of UTD going forward. Its all based on how Mata feels on that given day. The rest seems have little impact, eventho Martial looks like a really good player from what iv seen. (Havent seen a lot )

They were the best attack in the league going into the GW, with a good record against top sides.

I like Martial, but I'm nervous about Pelle against LEI...

Ighalo has outscored him in the last 2 and I have more cash to burn, giving me the flexibility of 3-5-2 as well if I want so i'm quite happy, yes. Think Martial is a good option though.

      Great grav

Don't feel too strongly about it one way or the other, he blanked much like my Diouf and Sakho did this week. He could have nabbed a goal as well.

I'm still surprised people are looking to ditch so soon, fixtures aren't great but I think he's been quite impressive. When your team gets rollicked by Arsenal, there's not much you can do.

And I think that's a fair consideration, but remember that in their last 3 PL games before Arsenal they scored 3 goals in each one. In fact, I reckon if LVG hadn't put out such an utterly bizarre line up they could have scored yesterday as well. But yes, especially from a fixture perspective I agree with you.

I was very apprehensive given the limited info. Having watched the game yesterday, i do feel that I would have kept him had I owned him. I can see goals and assist potential. I ended up keeping Gomis for 1 week then I brought in Pelle for Gomis last week.

TBH not regretting selling Gomis for him so far - big profit swing between the two. He looked the only hope they had of scoring yesterday so will be happy to keep him for the good fixtures though banking profit and switching to Pelle for form, fixtures and further profit is tempting.

      So chuffed!
Never considered him, a swallow does not a summer make. I think a few goals when you've just been purchased for a record transfer fee is a relief; once the excitement is over then he still has to adjust to the league and team. Still no doubt a great talent who'll bag a few more goals.

I kept hold of Aguero against the trend and i've had my highest ever GW haul being; forced to use the money more carefully around him. Tried and tested method with a proved scorer.

Also (as a united fan) for several seasons I've been overly cautious of buying any united players and only during seasons that a few have proven essential i've generally never bought any with the exception of braking that rule last season with De Maria and we all know how that ended,

    2) Manchester City
    3) Swansea

        Don't fancy Southampton?

Arsenal yeah, I was looking at them, Bellerin worth a massive shout cause he has been getting those assists too and I do remember he should have got one or two more against Newcastle.

It's just that 4 away games in the next 6 make it a little tricky for them imo.

My defenders have been doing shocking so I was just looking at what my 'ideal' replacement lineup would be.

It'd cost me -8 to get

      Kompany*, Cedric, Dawson, Dier, Bellerin

      *already own

Obviously not worth -8 but shows how many transfers I need to sort out the mess 🙁

I can afford a .1 drop on Gomez without losing value, and have 1.5mil in the bank. Also willing to take a 4pt hit if necessary. Current candidates are Alderwiereld, Jagielka, Souare and Dawson.

Right. Well the first problem is Schmeichel, who is disappointing, this Season - I am not sure why. The two rotations that work, within a budget, are Hennessey and Gomes. I didn't have the balls for Hennessey in the end, so I went for Gomes.

That brings me on to Crystal Palace:

            CPL: WHM 28 lei 52 MUN -147 liv -104 SUN 165 NEW 201

I chose Souaré - very satisfactory. Ward is back soon.

Darmian. Can you afford Monreal? If not, now we know it's Klopp, look at Moreno or Gomez?

Not too sure about doubling up on WAT, but Monreal and Soare would be good replacements for Gomez and Darmian. Or perhaps hold on to Gomez and swap Prodl out to make room for Gomes in a later trade. I'll have a think 🙂

Well Mahrez basically just tries to fake shoot and cut in seven times before shooting which works sometimes and sometimes not.

Does it not depend on where the passes are being made?

In fpl terms I'd rather a player was trying risky passes to set up others and have a lower completion rate than try less risky passes and set up fewer people

Still stand by my point. I doubt given the likely standard deviation, combined with the non specific metric i.e. where the pass is going, that you could conclude anything particuarly meaningful from this.

I think that it may not matter actually, i hope he starts more often than not, but the guy is a points machine, and at 8.6 is a bargain, id be amazed if he doesnt finish top mid in that price bracket.

Same here Doos. You don't look at what kdb scored in someones team you look at what your 8m player plus the extra 2m you have spent compared to the other team.

Looks good, only issue is whether Gabriel is a sure starter, Bellerin would be far safer... you need some more def options over the next couple of weeks when Francis and Browning will be glued to the bench

Hmmm tough really - who would you class as more def options?

I got Janmaat as a punt over teh next month or so... otherwise maybe Betrand LT or get in a Dawson / Evans. Or from the top teams, a Zouma (surely Mourinho will bring him back) or Bellerin

Wouldn't get Alli as a fifht. I would choose Westwood or try to find +1.0M for Redmond,Hoolahan etc.

      Myhill for Butland?

Gabriel will probably lose his spot once Kos is back.

browning for everton 3.9 - would be 5th def spot so always on bench

Ok thanks - i thought Mert would lose the spot over gabriel?

You still confident of WBA cleanies? They've been looking pretty poor at the back last few games?

Ok im tempted to change Alli to 4.3m or 4.4m then upgrade defense

    0.9 itb - anything worth a hit?

    Butland - Schmeichel
    Kolarov - Darmian - Dawson - Richards - Ogbonna
    Sanchez - Silva - Payet - Mahrez - Westwood
    Kun - Pelle - Ighalo

If Kolarov is rotated then I think there's scope for KDB and Silva, though we've toyed with this before (Yaya + Sterling) and it's not proved fruitful medium term, likewise with the defensive double up as things change from GW to GW.

So Clichy is due back on OCt 17. He will probably lack fitness so Kolarov is probably nailed on the 17th against BOU.
The on the 24th City travels to United and I don't really see Pellegrini giving the spot to a still non-100% fit Clichy. So Kolarov again.
then, Nov 1st: mac City welcomes Norwich and this is probably when the 50/50 Kolarov / Clichy starts.

    Do you agree with this?
