Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 13 – The Weak

Following our look at the teams who have been handed the strongest schedules over the next six Gameweeks, we now turn our attention to the sides who look set to find the going more difficult over the coming period. Norwich have to face three of the current top five, while West Brom and West Ham may also struggle to remain in our thoughts.

NORWICH

frisking

Alex Neil’s men may have earned a morale-boosting 1-0 win over Swansea in their final match before the international break, but with Arsenal, Man United and Tottenham all to face in the next six Gameweeks, further victories could be hard to come by. That clean sheet against the Swans was their first of the season, though bearing in mind that Arsenal and Spurs both feature in the top five teams for goal attempts over the last four Gameweeks, shut-outs in those two clashes appear unlikely. United have only failed to score in one of their six home matches, while Chelsea and Everton have also found the back of the net with regularity in front of their own fans. So Norwich defenders appear best ignored for the time being, as has been the case for most of the season.

The Canaries have also been short of goals recently, with Neil prioritising the need to keep things tighter at the back. The match-ups against United, Arsenal and Tottenham remain the least favourable in terms of Norwich’s attacking prospects, with those three teams ranked in the top six for the fewest number of shots conceded over the last four Gameweeks. Vicarage Road has been a tough place for lesser sides to get on the scoresheet, leaving only the Chelsea and Everton clashes, of which neither is particularly friendly. It looks best to look elsewhere for budget attacking options, then.

WEST HAM

frisking

Given that the Hammers failed to score against Watford, only managed one goal against Everton and will be without the injured Dimitri Payet for the foreseeable future, there has to be some concern about their attacking prospects heading into a difficult run of fixtures. As already mentioned, Tottenham and United are among the meaner defences in the league, while West Brom are a strong defensive unit on their travels, registering four shut-outs in six away trips. Stoke have also kept clean sheets in each of their last three away matches, leaving only the away encounters at Swansea and Aston Villa as potentially favourable. So, while Manuel Lanzini (5.3) looks a viable replacement for Payet in our five-man midfields, and a way to free-up some funds for the soon-to-be-fit-again Sergio Aguero, the Argentine may struggle to bring in the points.

Without a clean sheet since the 2-0 victory in Gameweek 5 against Newcastle, confidence isn’t exactly high in the West Ham backline. So with a trip to Tottenham up next, with Spurs scoring nine goals in their last three matches, that poor record looks set to continue, while United will be confident of breaking down the Hammers defence. The other four fixtures are fairly reasonable, but with West Ham defensive assets setting us back at least 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), their value for money looks unappealing.

WEST BROM

frisking

The foundations of the Baggies’ solid start to the campaign have certainly been built on the backline, but with their next four opponents all ranked among the top five clubs for total goal attempts over the last four Gameweeks, it’s difficult to see Tony Pulis’ men adding to the six clean sheets already accrued. Only from Gameweek 17 onwards does West Brom’s schedule begin to ease again, with match-ups against Bournemouth and Swansea pretty favourable, so it looks a case of either moving on our Baggies defensive assets, or consigning them to the bench in the short term.

Given that Jurgen Klopp has enjoyed some success in tightening things up at the back for Liverpool, that match-up, along with those against Arsenal and Tottenham, look difficult for a side that has only scored four goals in their last five matches. As previously stated, though, West Ham’s defence has been breached fairly often in recent weeks, while the fixtures against Swansea and Bournemouth also present decent match-ups. Regardless, West Brom attacking assets haven’t exactly been the order of the day this season, and the upcoming schedule suggests we shouldn’t be altering that line of thinking for the time being.

BE WARY OF…

Stoke
With only the trip to Sunderland in Gameweek 14 seen as favourable over the next six Gameweeks (sot, sun, MCI, whm, CPL, MUN), expectations for Fantasy points from the Potters aren’t high. The Southampton and Man City clashes, in particular, look unfavourable, while none of the other four fixtures look great match-ups. Jack Butland (4.6) has been in sensational form of late, but with clean sheets looking harder to come by in the next six, it may be that his 10% ownership have to rely on save points in the coming weeks.

The fixtures look harder when assessing the attacking potential for Stoke over the next month or so, with United and City probably the two strongest defensive teams at the moment. Crystal Palace and Southampton are generally resolute at the back too, so while the likes of Marko Arnautovic (6.0) and Bojan (5.2) had previously been seen as reasonable differential candidates, now doesn’t really look the time to be taking a gamble.

Swansea
While the Swans face four home fixtures in the next six (BOU, liv, LEI, mci, WHM, WBA), the lack of confidence among Garry Monk’s side has dampened our expectations for the Welsh outfit. The Bournemouth fixture will carry a fair bit of pressure for the under-fire Monk, although three of the matches at the Liberty Stadium do look decent match-ups for those still holding onto Andre Ayew (7.1), with the West Brom clash in Gameweek 18 being the exception.

Leicester have been full of goals all season and have to be backed to score in south Wales, but clean sheets in the other three home fixtures look possible, although far from a sure thing. The trips to Anfield and the Etihad look very difficult in terms of returns at either ends of the pitch, though.

Aston Villa
While Remi Garde’s first match in charge provided plenty of positives, the new Villa boss faces further difficult tests over the next six Gameweeks (eve, WAT, sot, ARS, new, WHM). The Villans have only managed two goals in their last five matches, and while the Arsenal fixture is the only really difficult match-up, none of the other five are against particularly weak defences, with Everton and Newcastle perhaps looking the best fixtures.

The task looks trickier at the other end of the pitch, though, with all six upcoming opponents ranked in the top 10 for goals scored over the past four Gameweeks. If their performance against City is anything to go by though, the Watford and West Ham clashes could yield further defensive returns if they can defend in a similar manner. Kieran Richardson (4.2) is likely to be handed a run of starts in light of Jordan Amavi’s season-ending injury, though few, if any, will be prepared to gamble on Villa’s defence right now.

Sunderland
With only two home matches in the upcoming slate of fixtures (cpl, STO, ars, WAT, che, mci), the Black Cats’ prospects don’t look particularly bright. Those two home fixtures are fairly favourable from a defensive viewpoint, with Stoke only managing three goals in their last five matches, while Watford are hardly prolific, either. Grabbing any defensive points in the four away matches appears unlikely, though, with the trip to Selhurst Park in Gameweek 13 looking their best opportunity.

It’s a similar story when assessing the prospects of their attackers, with goals expected to be hard to come by in the away matches. The two home fixtures could also be low-scoring affairs, though, with the Stoke and Watford rearguards, as already mentioned, fairly tough to break down.

My recent FF dry spell has caused me to cut away from the cycle for a while but I've seen the error of my ways and must now pick up the pieces. So I turn to you, friends, those better than I to catch me up and to also lend me your noble opinions:

Firstly, What are our most recent assessments of the returning dates for Aguero, Bony and Vardy?

Secondly, I'm eyeing up either Ramires (5.3) or Lanzini (5.3) for my Payet replacements, thoughts?

    My gratitude in advance.

        Lanzini seems a good shout

        Kun - sub appearance perhaps
Bony - no point keeping if Kun is back
Vardy - should play I imagine

Cheers, I'm two weeks into my wildcard and I'm already wishing I could do another one. D: Not really too bothered about the Payet loss either. Sure He's been one of my most regular providers from the start of the season but with him, Vardy, KDB and Mahrez that's half of my attacking team on massive ownership, my other picks aren't really too risky either. This is an excuse to get some differential's in.. (and to prepare my bank for the imminent return of Aguero, for my sins)

So I'm narrowing down my WC options, and am assessing the merits of the following two teams, would be great to get your thoughts...

    Team A:
    DDG //4.0
    Kolarov // VVD // Bellerin // Cathcart // Simpson
    Alexis // Ozil // KDB // Mahrez // 5.0
    Aguero // Vardy // Igahlo

    Team B:
    Myhill // 4.0
    5.3 or less // VVD // Bellerin // Cathcart // Simpson
    Alexis // Coutinho // KDB // Mahrez // 4.2 (a la Stainlas)
    Aguero // Vardy // Lukaku

Leaning towards Team A at the moment, as I think that DDG+Ozil+Igahlo should outscore Myhill+Coutinho+Lukaku, but its close... I could also do KDB --> Coutinho instead of Ozil, which would allow for a better 5th mid defender in Team B.

Would be great to get some feedback.

Thanks for the help - I'm reluctant to rip my defence apart too much trying to fit Lukaku in (not even sure if he's worth it), and Coutinho seems like the only 8ish mid worth considering bar those that I have. Possibly Tadic?

Whats you TV? Payet to Silva (when fit) seems like a decent move, but not sure if that gives you enough for Aguero in your frontline (say Aguero, Vardy and Igahlo).

Hmm, probably too low then - there's not a lot of good options in the 6m bracket for a 4th mid... can you squeeze more value out of your bench, or downgrade one of your premium defenders (ie Azpi)?

It's a defender watchlist article and in any case they are horrible fixtures for any team for either attacking or defensive returns. When writing these articles the writers should really try and take personal bias out of the picture and just look at things logically imo.

Ps this is not the first time I have come across this with this writer, almost every article is littered with these personal bias rubbish

They have four teams with ambitions of top 4 with two of those fixtures away and another team with ambitions of Europe also away. Apart from new who are resurgent recently they don't have a reasonable fixture in that run.

Take your Lei tinted glasses off and look at the fixtures in isolation. If it was sunderland playing these fixtures ye would be saying it is a horror run.

Leicester have split their goals equaly between home and away matches. And most of those teams they are playing in that run have leaked plenty of home goals.

No, I'm saying to check their away scoring record and the home defensive records of their oppenents before writing those fixtures off. All teams will have weaker fixtures at some point, doesn't mean the FPL points will suddenly stop.

This is one of the toughest fixture runs I've seen for some time. I'm not saying they won't score I'm just saying the difficulty of the fixtures should be acknowledged.

I'm only talking from an attacking perspective, agree that they are not great fixtures defensively, but as Tony says below, you wouldn't want to play a Leicester defender in any fixture most likely.

Yeah if Leicester's form wasn't so good, I'd see the fixtures a bit differently. But I don't think they're bad enough to take out any Leicester assets

And I'm not saying people should be told to take Lei players out of their teams just that the difficulty of the fixtures should be acknowledged to save people bringing in Leicester players for such a poor run.

It may even be wise to shop one if you have doubled up so that you can minimise your exposure should they struggle or at least make a plan to if they show signs of struggling.

If they likes of ffs are saying this is a reasonable fixture run it gives the impression to the gormless that they don't need to concern themselves with their Lei assets

From a defensive point of view even with good fixtures I wouldn't want to be deliberately playing a Leicester defender.

From an attacking point of view I think Vahrez will still return points over that run.

Although I know the cryx of your point is defensive watchlist based.

My point is that the fixtures ate horrible though whether you think Vardy or Mahrez might score in them or not they are possible they toughest run of fixtures they will face all season.

They should be included in the article above due to this run.

The above article has swansea down as having weak fixtures above too??? BOU, liv, LEI, mci, WHM, WBA. If you are a fixtures player you ate loading up on swans for that run and I know I for one am keeping an eye on a few of them.

It is the same noob writer btw (every article he writes seems to grate on me like this).

Form has surely influenced his thinking on Leicester.

They fixtures are tough from the perspective of defensive returns but who in the right mind is expecting those anyway.

But yeah they could've been included as weak with a caveat that Vahrez could continue etc. I disagree on Swansea though. I can see them winning one of the next 4.

Well yes the two away are tough but the for home are all winnable. We are talking fixture strength here not form or points potential. If we were only looking fit who was going to win or lose their next 6 then we would likely not include any bottom 6 team in a strong fixture article and would likely not include anyone outside the bottom 6 for a weak fixture article (a little facetious but just for emphasis)

              Perhaps.

But Swansea havent much form and this has an effect on the rating of the fixtures.

And the closest fixtures for me have a heavier weighting. The two home games for me at the end of the run are irrelevant in my thinking. This is relevant to the 'be wary of' mention in the article as only the next four games are mentioned, I'd imagine for the reasons I've mentioned.

And the author quotes form and lack of confidence for inclusion - that point and the next four games are valid reasons in my book.

I wouldn't agree with your suggestion to 'load up'. I wouldn't want a Swansea defender. The only way I'd want a Swansea player is if I owned Ayew I'd hold fitness permitting for Bournemouth at home then sell.

I'm not saying I am loading up but I'm watching for signs that points are likely to come with the turn in fixtures. I wouldn't recommend any swans based on current form.

Lack of form and confidence are certainly reasons to avoid swans players at the moment but for me fixtures is not a reason especially if you intend to rotate home away with someone else.

You said above if you are a fixtures player you'll load up for that run.

My point is looking at fixtures in isolation is pretty meaningless. Form is everything. You acknowledge this yourself by saying you wouldn't want any Swansea player given their current form. The next 4 will be hard going in their current form. I personally look at the next 4. I think the focus of the author above is the next four as that is what he mentions.

As for rotation it isn't much of an option becayse afaik their defenders are around £5m you get a fixed United or City or Arsenal defender for 0.3 - 0.5m more. So no thanks because they can't defend anyway and that's expensive for rotation. And rotating say Ayew isn't an option, owning Ayew isn't an option given who we could have instead IMO.

You see I agree with you somewhat. Form is key but quite often form changes with turns of fixtures and this is where fixtures come into it.

If you don't use the next 6 fixtures for part of your fpl strategy then fair enough but this is a next 6 fixtures article and as such I stand by my statement that Lei deserve to be in this article far more than swansea.

I don't want to justify or debate the merits of swans players as it is getting away from the point of my post. Swans were just another observation I have had about this writer that really gate on me. He is using purely personal bias to justify putting these teams either in our out of an article which really annoys me. It is fine for posting on these boards but not for writing a neutral article which should be giving people information to draw their own conclusions from.

Ps he does this with individual players all the time also

Thoughts on my transfer decision this week?

A: Dawson ---> Bertrand/Dann/Rose (otherwise will have to start Francis away to Swans)
    B: Pelle ---> Lukaku
C: Both for -4 and see it as an investment/chance to get a big scoring gameweek

-Bench Wijnaldum (LEI) or Ayew (BOU)?

Or maybe the midfield transfer gets first attention with Payet being out.

It certainly looked bad... He's young, hopefully a speedy recovery

    Who would you bench?

Wijnaldum, kone, Coutinho, Mahrez, KDB or Barkley?

That's the hard part... Technically Kone is the inform player... To me it was between Kone and Coutinho so I think I have my answer.

Assuming all fit, who goes to bench?

    Mahrez Ozil Sanchez Mane KDB
    Pelle Lukaku Vardy

On Sanchez at the moment but feels wrong

Mane or Pelle. Spread the risk + Stoke defensively strong. Mane if I had to choose one

You might be right, he usually comes late from internationals too, so may not be nailed on to start or complete 90 min

        Cheers

ABC aren't good for one week punt.

      I'd go for D

      Cabaye

Why would you drop Yaya? I'd be glad to still have him but sold for Ozil 3 weeks ago and that's worked out pretty well

Captained him for two weeks... Went with Ozil instead. Yaya has potential but with players coming back from injury it's tough to pick where the points are coming from at city

Is it better to get in Aguero right away after Liverpool or lukaku for a couple weeks first?

Im personally expecting Kun to come on as a sub first week v Pool, and then start the week after.
I think Pell would be crazy starting him - considering his history.

I'll be bringing him in for GQ 14 v Stoke

Lukaku is in form and Aguero blanked 5 weeks in a row after returning from a month long injury last season so up to you
