The Digest – Gameweek 13

Roberto Firmino announces himself to Fantasy managers as Liverpool sweep aside City at the Etihad. Everton continue to take full advantage of their favourable schedule, whilst Sergio Aguero’s case for inclusion is dampened by a number of in-form frontmen.

The Player

A goal and two assists in Liverpool’s stunning 4-1 triumph at the Etihad has belatedly brought Roberto Firmino onto our radars.

Afforded just three starts in Brendan Rodgers’ eight matches in charge, the Brazilian had failed to justify the hefty £28m transfer fee that the Reds handed to Hoffenheim last summer. Indeed, Firmino’s assist in the Reds’ win at Chelsea – his first start under Jurgen Klopp – was his first attacking points of the season.

Handed a central role in Liverpool’s front three on Saturday evening, we finally saw flashes of the talent that served up 23 goals and 21 assists in his final two seasons in the Bundesliga. Firmino’s understanding and link-up play with Philippe Coutinho cut City apart time and again, and although Klopp was able to name both Christian Benteke and Daniel Sturridge on the bench at City, Firmino looks undroppable on this sort of form.

Sitting in just 1% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) teams to Coutinho’s 20%, Firmino seems a ready-made differential with the fixtures to flourish as the Merseysiders gain momentum under Klopp. Up next, the Reds go head-to-head with Swansea, Newcastle, West Brom, Watford, Leicester and Sunderland in the next six, affording the Brazilian the chance to show just why Liverpool were prepared to splash the cash.

The Team

An emphatic home win over Aston Villa took Everton’s tally to ten goals in their last two Goodison outings as Roberto Martinez’ side racked up the Fantasy points.

The 4-0 victory highlighted the options from back to front in Roberto Martinez’ side. Seamus Coleman delivered a ten-point return – his second double-figure haul of the season – as the hosts chalked up a first shut-out in seven attempts. Whilst the in-form Gerard Deulofeu had an off-day, Ross Barkley delivered two goals and an assist for his 24% owners – priced at 6.9, he’s now level with Alexis Sanchez on 72 points.

Up top, Romelu Lukaku continues to shrug off the inconsistency that has blighted him in previous years. The big Belgian’s brace means he’s now netted in three successive league outings – indeed, he’s blanked just twice in the last seven in a run that has served up seven strikes, three assists and 11 bonus points from Gameweek 7 onwards.

Despite the return of Sergio Aguero, Lukaku is the number one transfer target in FPL right now, with over 125,00 managers snapping him up since the weekend. It’s no surprise to see that Barkley leads the way for midfielders (108,000+) ahead of the weekend trip to Bournemouth. With Palace, Norwich, Leicester, Norwich and Stoke to follow the Dean Court clash, Martinez’ men certainly have the schedule on side to continue their weekend showing.

The Talking Point

Sergio Aguero’s return from injury was greeted with much fanfare last week but, in spite of netting against Liverpool, the City forward was somewhat overshadowed in the race for our attentions up front.

The aforementioned Lukaku’s brace was equalled by Harry Kane, whose recent renaissance continued at home to West Ham as he took his tally to seven goals in the last four Gameweeks. Similar to Lukaku, Kane also a very kind schedule ahead that heightens his appeal – over the next 12 rounds of fixtures, Tottenham play a top-six side just once.

Then there’s Jamie Vardy to consider. The Leicester striker has now scored in ten successive league appearances and although he’s risen in price to 7.4, he still offers outstanding value. Granted, the Foxes’ schedule is somewhat disconcerting (MUN, swa, CHE, eve, liv, MCI) over the next six Gameweeks, though it’s worth noting that Claudio Ranieri’s side have fared well against some of the top sides. Leicester have played four of the current top eight and scored twice against Arsenal, West Ham and Southampton and once against Spurs.

Whilst there’s no denying Aguero’s standing as the most explosive captaincy contender in the top flight, the form and fixtures offered by Lukaku and Kane is making a convincing case for those who are somewhat reluctant rip up their squads to accommodate the Argentine.

Given that City have scored just three times in the last four Gameweeks, their downturn in form, allied with Manuel Pellegrini’s need to manage Aguero’s minutes for fear of another relapse, is starting to convince some Fantasy managers that going without the 13.1-priced striker over a hectic festive period could be a very viable tactic.

Am I alone in thinking that vardy will easily manage 20+ goals this season?! His work rate & shearer-like finishing make him a season keeper imo unless he gets injured of course.
Yeah Leicester will drop off at some point but considering they are aiming for 40 points, have nearly reached that goal & won't be feeling much pressure after reaching that goal, as well as vardy being nailed on, il be keeping hold of my Leicester assets for the foreseeable future.

I agree and am keeping him although i have kane and Aguero so if someone else comes into the frame i think vardy will be first out. I think people are put off by their fixtures but thats crazy considering leicester score goals

I'm on the other side of the fence. I'm very much expecting Vardy's light to start to dim and from then on be a vacant space for the rest of the season.

Plus they are top of the league - incentives to express themselves and play well don't come any bigger than that.

Nope, I agree on Vardy. He just gets so many chances to score almost every game because of Leicester's gung-ho philosophy.

Wont be selling unless I see a marked drop off in the chances he has to score per game.

I have a benching dilemma this weekend...

    Butland (McCarthy)
    Moreno Kolorov Ward Bellerin Francis
    DeBryne Mahrez Deulofeu Sanchez Ozil
    Lukaku Vardy Kane

It's already massively stressing me out...

I'm considering playing "bench boost" this week.

    Any thoughts?

bench Mahrez. Would you want to use the bench boost when Leicester have UTD (one of the best def in the league)?

        True.

Extremely reluctant to bench Mahrez though... Last time I did that he scored 15 points..

I know it's madness but i was thinking about benching Debryne

I know but at least you have Vardy. You are right Mahrez is explosive but he is playing against best defence in the league so thats why i am benching him. I'm playing Lanzini over Mahrez!

I wouldnt bench KDB especially the way southampton are leaking goals

Yeah... not sure about the Lanzini move! I knopw Man U's defence have been good but Until Mahrez and Vardy have at least a couple bad weeks i just can't justify benching them..

If you look at Debryne, he hasn't managed to score points against Norwich, Aston Villa and Bournemouth who are all a bit rubbish defensively.

United's defence currently 6th in the league for xG conceded, definitely good but not sure they're one of the best.

You have McCarthy, who is a non-starter, and Francis, who will consistently get 1 or 2 points. Bench boost would be mental. Sweet team though.

        Yeah You're right.

Still I have to choose between:

        Moreno Kolorov Ward Bellerin
        And
        DeBryne Mahrez Deulofeu Sanchez Ozil

All have decent fixtures or great form at the moment...

Who would you bench? 1 from defense and once from mid?

I'm not benching any of the front 3:
        Lukaku Vardy Kane

yea exactly. i would probably bench kolorov if kompany is still out, otherwise moreno maybe. the mid is harder. deulofeo based off proven quality, but i would be tempted to drop sanchez after the amount he's let me down all season. mahrez has the rough fixture but i've learned to never bench mahrez. city's attack has been mediocre at best but i expect them to pick it up.

I thought about benching Sanchez but I think he's far too good. Especially with Norwich as their next fixture.

The next thought is benching Debryne who has been pretty average in terms of fantasy points so far. I'm probably going to transfer him out for a cheap 5th mid soon and get Aguero in for Vardy.

Moreno has failed to deliver on fantasy points too. Despite Liverpool beating Man City and Chelsea by 3 and 4 goals, he had no involvement..

Basically, I'm probably going to bench Moreno an Debryne. I'm sure i will massively regret both decisions next Monday...

One other thing for this weekend. I'm on the verge of winning a bottle of champagne this month as the Months best performer... Makes the bench boost option all the more tempting...

haha ahh a monthly challenge. it will probably hurt the overall score, but maybe not so much that it doesn't make the bottle worth it. I agree, there's been so much hype about moreno's attacking prospects but realistically he hasn't produced yet and their defence is not very good.

KDB out Barkley in. The plan is to ease aguero/kane in. Saved a lot of money by taking out KDB

    Butland

    Darmian - Kompany - Koscielny - Ward - S Taylor

    mahrez - Ozil - Sánchez - Barkley - wanyama

Lukaku - bony (who will be leaving asap) - vardy

I wanna bring in alderweirld for Kompany but I wanna get aguero/kane but I'm leaning towards kane.

I might bring in both and take out lukaku and have Barkley as my way into the Everton attack.

What do you think, good way to finish the year ?? Let me know people

Do you think it's solid defense?

      hennessy, De gea
      Bellerin, Aldo, Skertl, Woolsheid, Simpson

What would you change in case, I really want Coleman but will mean to ship Beller.
      Any thoughts appreciated

And yet the veteran posters 4 years ago were bemoaning the passing of the previous golden age when posters were funnier, conversations more memorable, comments more perceptive and nobody had to lock their doors because everybody got along...

I think Hooky nailed it - there are just as many 'personalities' as there ever were, it's probably a bit more diluted due to volume.

It's a transient thing, LR - you've just got to put up with it. People come on here, score well and keep a high rank and you can't stop them posting. Once they start to falter they drift away. But they are replaced by a new lot. Rinse and repeat.

Not that I know of, but City have questionable form without Kompany.. 1 goal conceded with him in the side and 12 goals without him. Plus Mané tends to play a free role in away games and might have more license to get forward with no Pelle

      KDB, Ozil, Mahrez, Ayew, Sako
      Kane, Igahlo, Pelle

      $5m ITB 1FT

I'm considering an 8pt hit for KDB, Igahlo, Pelle > Barkley, Lukaku, Aguero.

The aim is to get Augero and Lukaku in but not sure who is higher priority. All I know is Pelle is gone this week.

      Appreciate any thoughts.

      Cheers

No hit needed - Pelle to Kun straight swap and you're sorted.

Who is more essential this week, Kun or Lukaku?

Lukaku better fixtures and Kun not fully match fit

Something can't be more or less essential, it either is or it isn't!

        Pelle to Lukaku
        or KDB+Pelle to Lukaku+Barkley

        Ighalo has juicy fixtures

      Pelle Exit Strategies

What with the inevitable ban and poor form leading up to this, it's time to move Pelle on. I got him in for 8.2m when Aguero got injured, so need to sell pretty sharpish to get my 0.1m profit. Problem is, only 1FT having dealt with the Martail situation last week, and pence in the bank...

So, with 8.5m total, do we go with say Benteke, or take a hit and get a better player in such as Lukaku or Kane? I would have to sell Kolarov to fund this, so will need a 5.0m replacement too. Shawcross? Not overly convinced on Moreno...

Scared that this will be the week when Kolarov explodes, Kane blanks, and Benteke knocks a hat-trick!

      Any thoughts?

Benteke would be a solid option but he's not nailed is he? And Walker is a good shout for 5 mil

              He's not fully-fit either though.

Good plan, Lukaku over Kane though?

Or do Mata>Firmino, to fund Pelle>Kane/Lukaku...

        Hmm..

      Would you play:

      A) Rose (CHE)

      Or

      B) Ayew (liv)

Considering you're playing Moreno (SWA)? Or I could bench Moreno and play both Rose and Ayew... Thoughts?

I'd play Rose because of Swansea' awful form. But if a risk not playing the attacker though

      Myhill, McCarthy
      Rojo, Bellerin, Sagna, Evans, Targett
      Sanchez, KDB, Mahrez, Bolasie, Westwood
      Lukaku, Vardy, Pelle

Obvious move is KDB and Pelle ➡ Coutinho/Firmino and Kane/Kun.

      Which pair would you choose?

What do you guys think of Manuel Lanzini as a FPL prospect? Bargain price?

Nah. Expensive bench fodder at most.

i wouldnt class him as a bench fodder - more an alternating 4th mid

Got him after saturdays games! He is a decent player and now looks like he is playing in payets position so im happy with that. Scored best goal of the game too on sunday
