Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – De Bruyne at the Double

Kevin De Bruyne produces two goals and an assist as City coast past Hull at the Etihad. Everton’s Gerard Deulofeu bags a goal and assist, Ibrahim Afellay helps Stoke progress, whilst Philippe Coutinho still remains a doubt for Liverpool’s clash with Southampton this evening.

De Bruyne Double Steers City Through

Inspired by a Kevin De Bruyne brace (and assist) – which included another inch-perfect free-kick – Man City cruised to a 4-1 victory against Hull City. In the absence of Sergio Aguero, Wilfried Bony led the line and netted in the 12th minute. Raheem Sterling set up Kelechi Iheanacho for the Sky Blues’ second at the 80-minute mark, before De Bruyne bagged two in the final 10 minutes.

David Silva made a welcome return to the starting XI and lasted 83 minutes – he was one of four changes from the side that won against Southampton, as Gael Clichy, Eliaquim Mangala and Wilfried Bony also came in for Yaya Toure, Aleksandar Kolarov, Martin Demichelis and Sergio Aguero. Mangala will miss the weekend trip to Stoke after earning a fifth yellow card of the season.

Post-match, Manuel Pellegrini confirmed he will be without Vincent Kompany for now, whilst Aguero remains a doubt for the trip to the Britannia:

“I don’t think Vincent will be ready soon, maybe against Swansea but not before. Hart could be fit for Saturday; if not Tuesday, while Kun has pain in his heel – he is improving but we will see tomorrow if he can play on Saturday.”

The Scout Says: Sold by 80,000 FPL managers prior to last Gameweek, De Bruyne has recorded three goals and as many assists in his subsequent two outings. With Alexis Sanchez a major doubt amongst the premium midfielders, and with question marks remaining over Aguero, the Belgian has risen in price again as his bandwagon picks up pace. Notwithstanding the bevy of positive notes from their Capital One Cup triumph, City once again failed to keep a home clean sheet, having conceded in their last six league clashes at the Etihad. It’s perhaps a blessing, then, that they’re on the road for six of their next 10 fixtures, though Mangala’s suspension, allied with Kompany’s ongoing absence, means that Demichelis will retain his starting berth for the Stoke encounter this Saturday.

Deulofeu Dazzles in Toffees Win

Everton gained entry into the semi-finals of the League Cup by way of a 2-0 road win over Middlesbrough. Gerard Deulofeu produced a stunning solo effort (Ramiro Funes Mori assist) to fire the visitors into the lead, before Romelu Lukaku combined with the Spaniard to double their advantage. James McCarthy failed a late fitness test, but Gareth Barry recovered from a shin problem, whilst Leighton Baines stepped up his rehabilitation with a 22-minute run-out in the second period. In terms of personnel, Roberto Martinez made three changes from his starting XI at Bournemouth, with Joel Robles, Leon Osman and Tom Cleverley coming in for Tim Howard, McCarthy and Arouna Kone.

The Scout Says: Lukaku’s strike against the Boro offers further incentive to captain him for the Toffees’ home tie against Crystal Palace. That being said, it’s worth noting that the Eagles lay claim to the second-best road record on the defensive front, having conceded just five goals away from Selhurst Park. With three goals and two assists in a pair of league outings, Ross Barkley had stormed ahead of Deulofeu in that internal contest, yet the latter’s man-of-the-match display last night will certainly sate his 3% ownership. A cameo appearance for Baines has paved the way him to return to the starting line-up. Few Fantasy managers will be willing to take a punt on the 6.1-priced left-back just yet, but he could emerge as an intriguing differential during Everton’s agreeable winter schedule (CRY, nor, LEI, new, STO).

Potters Ease into Last Four

Stoke City carded a comfortable 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday in their quarter-final match-up. Ibrahim Afellay opened the scoring at the half-hour mark, while Phil Bardsley gave the Potters a two-goal cushion 15 minutes from time. Mark Hughes made five changes to his XI last night. Ryan Shawcross missed out through suspension and was replaced by Marc Wilson, whilst Afellay, Geoff Cameron, Marco van Ginkel and Peter Crouch came in for Xherdan Shaqiri, Charlie Adam, Bojan and Glenn Whelan. Mame Biram Diouf was omitted from the squad by virtue of his wife going into labour.

The Scout Says: Afellay has mustered just four league starts since his switch from Barcelona last summer but he’ll be hoping to muscle his way into Stoke’s attacking quartet for their upcoming home tie against Manchester City, given that Mark Hughes’ troops netted four goals in their previous seven fixtures. After a strong start to the season, Diouf has fallen behind Jonathan Walters as the spearhead of their attack, with Marko Arnautovic and Shaqiri retaining their wide berths and Bojan tucked in behind. The Potters’ defence is of more interest from a Fantasy perspective – considering they’ve chalked up five clean sheets in seven outings – but their challenging run through to the New Year (MCI, whu, CRY, MUN, eve) doesn’t seem too conducive to shut-outs, suggesting Jack Butland may need to rely on save points over the festive period.

Saints Optimistic on Fonte availability

Ronald Koeman revealed in his Tuesday press conference that Jose Fonte is the only absentee for Southampton’s midweek League Cup clash against Liverpool. The Saints boss is confident, however, that the Portuguese centre-back will be available their home tie against Aston Villa on Saturday:

“Jose is not fit for tomorrow. He still has the cut above his knee with the stitches and we are hopeful that he can play this Saturday, but tomorrow is too early. There are no other updates about injuries – the same team, the same squad probably for tomorrow’s game.”

The Scout Says: Southampton’s defence has been solid but unspectacular this term, conceding 17 goals and carding five clean sheets. Although Fonte (13% ownership) is the most popular of their rearguard recruits, Virgil van Dijk (4% ownership) has swiftly established himself as the prime pick, notching two goals in 10 league starts since his summer move from Celtic. Nonetheless, the former has been posting similarly impressive underlying stats, ranking joint-fourth among defenders for attempts (10) and joint-second for shots inside the box (nine). Both men harbour the potential to be valuable pick-ups during Saints’ upcoming pair of favourable match-ups (AVL, cry), before they face clubs from the capital in three successive Gameweeks (TOT, ARS, whu).

Klopp Still Unsure on Coutinho Fitness

Although Jurgen Klopp is intending to rotate his squad for the Reds’ trip to St Mary’s Stadium, he confirmed that Philippe Coutinho is still a doubt for the head-to-head with a hamstring injury:

“At this moment I can’t say which team I’ll play because the last game was only two days ago. Yes, I will play the strongest team but that all depends on the situation and how much they played recently. You can’t ignore the last game. You can’t ignore the next game. Usually, you need the full squad. Really, I have to think about it. It’s a puzzle but in the end it will be our strongest team for sure. We have to wait with Philippe. We will speak with the medical staff and to Phil. He will be close. It’s possible. We have to double check the situation.”

The Scout Says: In a week that’s seen 160,000 Alexis Sanchez owners sell the Chilean in response to his hamstring injury, Philippe Coutinho has welcomed 18,000 new owners, making him the fourth-most transferred-in midfielder. It’s hardly surprising he’s in high demand: before succumbing to injury, the former Inter Milan playmaker tallied four goals and one assist across three outings. Furthermore, no midfielder who clocked at least 100 minutes over the last four Gameweeks fashioned shots at a faster rate (one every 21.5 minutes) than Coutinho, illustrating the wealth of scoring opportunities he’s afforded. The favourable nature of Liverpool’s trip to Newcastle this weekend has encouraged those new Coutinho uptakers to take a calculated risk regarding his fitness. Indeed, only Bournemouth have surrendered more goals (10) than the Magpies since Gameweek 11.

Just noticed that I fecked up bringing Silva in instead of KDB. KDB will do a hauler and Silva will be assister of an assister... Hate this season.

"Spain midfielder David Silva made his first start for Manchester City since 3 October following an ankle injury, returning to captain the home side against Hull.
And the 29-year-old impressed with his usual touch and poise, as well as linking up with Belgium international De Bruyne to great effect.
While Silva pulled the strings, De Bruyne provided the punch.
The Belgium attacking midfielder continues to dazzle since arriving from German side Wolfsburg, taking his tally to nine goals and eight assists in 15 matches for the Blues."

I'm happy I got KDB for Sanchez

Have you seen Facer's hot topic on this regard? He seems pretty sure that Sanchez will be out for about 4-6 weeks. On top of that, it's December. From now on until Jan 2, there are 6 gameweeks, if he is out for that long, you have to get rid surely?

Yeah, I expect he'll be out for a few weeks also, but waiting for confirmation before moving (just hoping it comes before another price drop!).

            Best replacement of these 4?

              In that order for me.

Though I'd have 3 out of those if I did Sanchez to Cout this week, what's your midfield looking like? I think Ozil Sanchez KdB and Mahrez were more or less 'template' on here?

        Alexis Sanchez baby
        Alexis Sanchez woooo oooooh

I'm almost certainly ditching, just awaiting confirmation from Arsenal on extent of the injury first.

My midfield is in tatters so I have plenty of options:

Hazard, KDB, Ozil, Coutinho the pick of them. Watcha reckon?

        Sanchez, Mahrez, Barkley, Bolasie, Surman
        Aguero, Kane, Lukaku

Yeah, can't argue with that. I do worry about Arsenal though. No Sanchez, Walcott or Santi. Ramsey's been out of form for a year and Giroud is almost as slow as Mert. Can Ozil do it ALL on his own?

BFS has a decent record against us from memory. I expect the bus to be parked and don't see a goal rush. A 4 week punt on one of the others before returning to Alexis is tempting.

All valid points. I'm certainly concerned about Arsenal going forward.

Heck I don't even know how they will lineup. Walcott may not be ready.
I'm assuming it will be Giroud, Ramsey, Ozil, Campbell front 4.

Rumors of Chambers starting alongside Flamini in the double pivot.

Also beware that Big Sam lied about his tactics to the media just two weeks ago vs Palace.

When it comes down to it, there are several reasons to eliminate the other two options (Haz/Coutinho)

Looks pretty suspect to me. Campbell doesn't look up to it, AOC is just back from injury (and often flatters to deceive) and Giroud is possibly the slowest striker in the league. Could be a big game for Ramsey - he normally does well with Giroud in the side and he'll be asked to push forward to get the goals in the absence of Sanchez. Would be a very big gamble though given his form.

Campbell and AOC are definitely hit and miss, so it definitely is a wait and see what happens. I suspect the city game will be a write-off - awful timing from Arsenal's point of view.

I can definitely see Hazard scoring and getting the odd assist in this stretch. The drought will end eventually.

My main concern is his ceiling.

Will he able to get multiple goals/assists in the same game?

                  Is he captain material?

My first instinct says no. At least not yet. Like you said, they have improved drastically but its been mainly on the defensive end.

I don't see much has changed going forward and although him being OOP is appealing; it is not his natural position and will require an adjustment period. That's if Jose decides to keep him there, and that is a big if, because we have no clue what he is up to week in and week out. The uncertainty alone is driving me far far away from him.

Good luck with whatever you choose. They are all excellent choices that can be justified one way or the other.

Coutinho or Hazard as my Sanchez replacement? Barkley's there too but I don't think I fancy him. The stats aren't there for him. It could well be a purple patch where everything you hit turns into goals though.

      Coutinho for me mate.

I think there's going to be a Chelsea resurgence but I reckon it'll start from the back with 1-0 wins. So would much prefer a Coutinho who is:

      a) Cheaper
      b) In currently, a better and far more attacking team
      c) In great form

I'm going for Hazard, looked very lively against Spurs, if Costa is dropped, he will lead the line against a shabby Bournemouth side playing their 3rd choice keeper...

The fixtures definitely are there for him, he has created a lot of chances too, especially against Norwich. He just isn't getting into those scoring positions though. Not entirely sure yet.

Would any of you play Lanzini v Man Utd (a) ahead of any of these:

    Bertrand v Villa (h)
    Smalling v West Ham (h)
    Rose v WBA (a)
    Clyne v Newcastle (a)

    ?

I'd personally fancy Lanzini to outscore Smalling but I can completely understand why you'd pick Smalling if you went down the 4 at the back route.

Your defence is brilliant this season alright, hence why I'd probably play Smalling if I were you, but I have a feeling about Lanzini and West Ham aren't completely toothless up front..

Nah, I'm talking nonsense, play 4 at the back.

Love all the articles (that I can read) and I hate to have to choose but I think I have to go with Seaman's because it gave something completely different. A 'collective gut analysis' as opposed to a stat analysis and something which involves trawling through different fan forums.

      8 years, 5 months ago

Hey, our boy, Christiaan. Normal birth and all. When still a baby he was predominately left handed. We didn't make much of it at the time since I'm left handed. When he started walking we noticed he didn't put his right heel down properly. Basically toe walking on the one side. Went for MRI brain scan. Turns out he had a brain bleed. Not sure if at birth or during pregnancy or even after birth. Diagnosed with a Hemi plegia, but so mild that you probably won't notice it. At the time of the scan his brain still had enough "space" so the bleed didn't effect any speech/mobility etc. The scan indicated Keloids"...where it heeled itself. Amazing.

Anyway, long story short..he is turning 6 in February, attending normal pre school, talks at a million miles a minute(swears like a pirate!) With physio and two botox sessions/casts he is our miracle. He is capable of doing everything a 5 yr old would do, other than jump/skip on his right leg.

His specialist is so happy that we might not go ahead with a operation end of next year where his Achilles tendon gets lengthened.

lol, yeah I'm all for the op. Both me and Mrs Christina will be pushing for it. We want to do it end of next year as he needs to walk with a cast for 6 weeks. We want him to walk into "big school" normally without a cast.

Dancing!? Yeez, I dunno hey..his 8yr old sister is doing modern dances. The time and effort she(and us!) puts in is draining.

Brilliant...It can be a real body blow when these sorts of things happen but it's amazing how most (!) people manage to find the reserves to battle through and come out the other end all the better for it. I'll get the low down on all that from the missus (she's a paediatric nursing sister).

I wish you all well..keep me posted.

Yeah will do. I'm also stupid when it comes to all this medical stuff. My wife is a medical Dr so she explains most to me over a glass of wine at night!

The emotions were draining. First he was "normal" for all tense and purposes...then we realize something is "wrong"...then I watch my 2 yr old being pushed into a MR scanning machine...not knowing if he might have cancer or a tumor in his brain or on his spine ...then hearing it was a brain bleed(!)...being shocked...then seeing him recover and working through physio seeing him reach all his milestones.

I have the utmost respect for you and your wife as parents.

Yeah okay, I think you should just do one of those transfers then and save your AOA. Taking a hit to bench Bellerin at home to Sunderland really doesn't seem worth it and Watson is good bench fodder anyway

Sanchez to either of those two. If you want a benching headache and believe it will come good in a few weeks, do so. I would advise just Sanchez to one of those two

    Replacement for Sanchez.

    A. Coutinho (if plays tonight and is fit)
    B. Silva
    C. KDB

Am I right in saying if Silva is in KDB plays further forward?

KDB. I personally think Silva is just about a better pick, but he's fragile and likely to see his minutes reduced over Christmas, so KDB for now.

Long-term I think the Man City players will get points more consistently. If you're just looking at this week then Coutinho is probably best

    COMMUNITY PICKS HELP

Hi again everyone, I won the lottery so I'm Community Pick Champion for this week! I think I have a pretty good team worked out but I would really appreciate your help and advice on this (11 man) team!

    Stekelenburg
    Alderweireld, van Dijk, Moreno
    Özil, Hazard, Mané, Barkley
    Kane, Vardy, Lukaku

    £0.9m ITB

    My main concerns:
I have no Liverpool (New) forwards or midfielders.
I have no Watford (NOR) or Man City (Sto) players.
Are Vardy and Hazard still first in line for penalties?

Some players I'm currently considering (Bolasie; Bertrand; Ighalo, Nyom; Giroud, Walcott; De Bruyne; A. Ayew; Azpilicueta, Zouma).

I would try to fit in Ighalo and Coutinho.

      Also, KdB instead of Hazard.

Yes, Ighalo (NOR) should have a better return than Kane (wba) this week.

      Good picks.

Re penalties. Mahrez is first choice, but if its a match where Vardy hasn't scored and he's still in consecutive goals mode then I suspect he will hand the ball to the England man.

Hazard is still number one until we know otherwise. Nothing has been said about them being taken off him.

Like said previously. You need lot of differentials.

Thats pretty poor team considering you need to beat them more than 16 points margin.

I would get players like Pelle, Ayew, Sturridge, Deulofeu,Deeney etc.

Come on. Where is Zouma? 😉 Van Dijk, Moreno out, Kolarov in.

Get rid of Hazard, get Coutinho.

Let's have a bit of fun. Vardy out, Ighalo in.

Really tempted to go Zouma or Azpi but there just seems to be so much risk of them being rotated.

Really want to make room for Ighalo and Coutinho too. If Coutinho is passed fit I may get him him in.

Double Southampton at the back, Alderweireld and Moreno wouldn't be for me.

Chelsea and United have plum home ties this week.

      Like the Hazard punt.

I'd bin Hazard + Barkley for 2 of these Coutinho / De Bruyne / Bolasie.

If you're looking for a differential then how about Benteke? Against an awful Newcastle side and was mentioned in the scoutcast yesterday as a differential pick? Might be worth a shot.

Otherwise Coutinho and Ighalo are the two players I'd want in that team.

Unsurprisingly lots of love for Coutinho and Ighalo here. Tricky to fit them in but it's definitely something I'm considering. If Coutinho looks like too much of an injury doubt and Walcott is passed fit would he be a good option against Sunderland?

To help me make my mind up about these and a few other tricky decisions please get in involved in the twitter polls I'll be running. First one is live now (link below).

I think the goal is to try and beat the scout picks by a large margin, not so? If that's the case, I'd opt for differentials in several 50/50 decisions. Example I'd go Bertrand over VVD, Walker over Toby. I'd avoid Barkley and KDB altogether though that's just me being risky.

Surprised you're going double soton defence when they are costly and Fonte may not be 100%. I like the Hazard pick as he's a great differential

Good morning to all, any help on what to do with my 2FT would be much appreciated.

P.S I've never had Vardy in my team and i've taken a stubborn stance to keep it that way....if only i knew why...

Aguero to Kane tempts me but only if Aguero out for 2 weeks or more.

    Myhill Butland

    Bellerin Alder Evans Cedric Smith

    KDB Ozil Mane Barkley Gosling

    Aguero Ighalo Lukaku.

Not sure about Mata. I'd prefer to have a bench-fodder midfielder and some money spare to upgrade your attack at some point, because benching one of those 8 every week is gonna be difficult

        Lukaku > Ighalo

and having a front three instead

Morning all - was away yesterday so couldnt log on. Some advice please. Used my FT to get Sanchez out but was thinking to fix one of my defenders. Would you do?

Souare, Cedric or Nyom> Moreno or Walker -4

    Butland
    Nyom, Monreal, Cedric
    KDB, Mahrez, Dealofeu, Ozil
    Kane, vardy, Aguero

    (Hennessey) Lanzini, Souare, Simpson
