The Digest – Gameweek 29

Sergio Aguero steps up his form as City look to chase down Leicester at the summit. West Ham’s bid for a Champions League berth goes from strength to strength, whilst Villa’s dire displays strengthens the idea of backing their opponents for Fantasy points potential.

The Player

A home clash with Aston Villa allowed Sergio Aguero the perfect platform to showcase his captaincy credentials.

Despite hitting the post with a second-half spot-kick, the Argentine still found the net on a couple of occasions as City swept aside the doomed midlands outfit to reignite their title bid with an emphatic 4-0 demolition.

Although he’s been subject to 38,000 transfers in so far this week, Aguero still only sits in 32% of squads – less than half Riyad Mahrez’ 67%, for example – which makes him only the fourth most popular forward in Fantasy Premier League (FPL).

Given that City now head to Norwich at a time when up to ten teams could be facing a blank, that low ownership level, relative to the masses, looks set to prove a very handy weapon in rising up the rankings again.

Aguero’s weekend double, his third brace in seven appearances, means he has found the net every 103.2 minutes this term – quicker than any player in the league and almost on a par with last year’s 101.6 minutes, where he scored on 26 occasions.

With a double Gameweek also to be factored in, the in-form City talisman seems set to become increasingly influential over the run-in, both to Fantasy managers and Manuel Pellegrini, as the Etihad side attempt to fire their way back into the title race in the Chilean’s last year at the helm.

The Team

An outstanding comeback win at Goodison meant that West Ham were one of only two teams – along with Liverpool – to emerge triumphant in all three of their fixtures over the hectic last week or so.

After chalking up back-to-back 1-0 victories over Sunderland and Tottenham, Slaven Bilic’s men had to show their mettle at Everton, coming from two down to grab all three points at the death thanks to Dimitri Payet.

Whilst Payet remains the jewel in the Upton Park crown, Michail Antonio’s form makes a double-up worth considering for the run-in. Priced at just 5.4, the former Forest man has also matched Payet for points per game (5.5 to 5.9) – that’s despite being fielded as a right wing-back in each of the last two matches.

Bilic’ side have also impressed at the back in recent matches, racking up three straight clean sheets at Upton Park and boosting our faith in Aaron Cresswell, in particular. Indeed, in their final season before moving grounds, West Ham have now gone unbeaten in 12 in front of their own fans and still have visits from Watford, Palace, Arsenal, Swansea and United to follow.

With a blank Gameweek 30, our interest in Bilic’s chief protagonists is obviously on pause for now but with two doubles still to follow – albeit with a blank Gameweek 35 – many will be plotting to draft in a Hammer or two. Although a Gameweek 31 trip to Chelsea is far from straightforward, West Ham have already beaten the Blues this season and if they can maintain their current form, heavy investment could be on the cards as they look to clinch a top-four finish.

The Talking Point

Having kept City at bay in the first-half, there was no surprise to see the floodgates open after the break as Villa move yet another step closer to sealing their fate in next season’s Championship.

After the 4-0 mauling, Remi Garde conceded that an accumulation of poor results over the course of the campaign means that his players’ confidence is diminishing with every Gameweek right now:

“In our situation we know that conceding the first goal, especially against a very good team like that, it’s not a good sign for us. Playing football is about tactics but also mentality. Probably the mentality of the team – and the players – has been damaged a lot since the start of the season. I think the team is getting more and more fragile game after game because of the scenario of the season”.

Devoid of the spirit and necessary battle to beat the drop, Villa’s role as whipping boys for the run-in is picking up pace.

That thrashing at the Etihad means that Garde’s side have now conceded 15 goals in the last four Gameweeks – that’s six more than any other side. Furthermore, Villa have allowed their opponents 14 “big chances” during that period – opportunities that are expected to be converted – which is again more than any side, highlighting their dire defence.

The only real surprise on Saturday was that Aguero managed to score just twice – thankfully for the visitors, the woodwork prevented that spot-kick from nestling in the back of the net.

As the midlands side slip closer towards relegation, they now brace themselves for a weekend visit from title-chasing Tottenham –
immediately boosting the points potential of Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli.

As they tumble out of the top-flight with barely more than a whimper, backing Villa’s upcoming opponents from week-to-week may well prove a canny tactical ploy as we look to take advantage of the Villa Park malaise.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Triple captain candidates- the consecutive kings

One of the best indicators of whether a double Gameweek captain will be a success is how often they have scored points for two games in a row.

I’ve been doing some digging and it looks like Ozil may be the most reliable option for those looking for a triple captain during a double Gameweek.

On just three occasions when fit has Ozil blanked for two games in a row.

Payet is also a good option with only five consecutive blanks.

Can anyone find any others who can beat Ozil?

If the Arsenal v WBA game is off in GWK 30 then Ozil could have a very favourable GWK 34 double of WBA and CPL. Or he could have a slightly less favourable GWK 37 double of WBA and mci. Either way he looks a solid option for the triple captaincy.

Ozil has to be a prime candidate. Or Lukaku if Everton do indeed end up with the Holy Grail of a triple GW.

If Everton do have a triple, even Lukaku will be rested, bearing in mind they will still be in the FA cup.

Birmingham had a double double within three Gameweeks. There was a midfielder, whose name escapes me, he was a good option though.

Yeah any manager will be bound to rotate in these case, so imo better go with a DGW player who's guaranteed 180min.

Birmingham didn't have a treble, but back to back doubles. Middlesbrough had a treble in 2006 and nobody featured in all 3 games

            Your memory fails 😆
You must be thinking of season 10/11 (it's the only season when Zigic played for Birmingham in the Premier League). Birmingham had 3 double gameweeks that season, but not a single triple gameweek. Zigic scored in those games:

            GW 27 Stoke & Newcastle 6+2
            GW 29 WBA & Everton 0+1
            GW 33 Sunderland & Chelsea 0+0

So, you must be thinking of GW29, when Zigic had 84K transfers in but only played 18 minutes of the second game. The only Brum player who scored well that week was Beausejour with 14 points.
Larsson (16) and Gardner(13) scored well in GW33.

GW34 certainly looks good as an option for him.

Right or wrong I would also consider both the H/A and the strength of the opposition.

In the later GWs will the fight for European or fight to survive effects come in again this season?
If memory serves the last six GWs are often a nightmare to predict.
I'd like my DGW players to be facing mid-table going nowhere teams getting ready for the Summer.

Why do people think that with a WC in GW33 and BB15DGWsin GW34 they will be able to field 11in GW35 (despite blanks) and 11 in DGW37?!

Isn't that unlikely just because the DGW37s wont be close to the same as DGW34?

Both. But most of all Pool will have a game each week and 2 DGW's coming up. Everton will probably miss GW 35 but you do have Forster that week.

Yeah but the yank will get some gametime due to his last season. Everton will be in mid table obscurity so expect rotation with everyone. Everton could get a rearranged fixture GW35 if either them or Palace progress. sunderland I think.

"On or around" 10th March. I'm still not sure why they don't just wait until after the FA Cup, then they will know any replays, and know all PL matches that will need to be re-arranged for the rest of the season, so could sort all of them out in one go.

    Morning all,

So somehow I have a benching issue this weekend...

    Current team as follows:

    Hart (Butland)

    Alderweireld Kompany Simpson Daniels (Ward)

Mahrez Sanchez Ali (Arnie , Payet)

    Kane, Vardy Aguero

    2 FTs - £1.4 ITB

Trying to decide between benching either Arnie or Daniels...

What do you think? Bench one of the following:

    A: Arnie
    B: Daniels

    Thanks!

The team value check HT is depressing. Some people have £2-5m more to spend than me. That's really going to hurt when we're all wildcarding.

I think it's only going to be a big issue if the more expensive players all start to perform well and have DGWs.
I think I'm about average value for regular players. I'd still like to have an extra few mill to play with.

Yeah true. I currently have 6m in the bank so I guess it's not too bad. Still nice to have it to spend though

This is it, I saved cash to have for Aguero rather than having to take hits or dump players I also wanted. I'm not sure if it was worth doing or not and don't care enough to calculate the sixty million options I could have had instead. 😀

      My

      TV is 104.3m
      SV is 103.2m

      Quite Low..

I'm chasing 160 points and the guy at the top really knows what he's doing (as do the 7 others above me). WC in 33 and BB 34 is my likely strategy as I feel I need to "go early". As for TV/SV, I'll be looking at mega differentials in all likelihood and there's plenty around for cheap.

Good luck, it's a big ask with 9 to go but far from impossible.

I don't think "going early" should be a factor - that's just robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Well, I know its a risk but I'll likely be binning off Butland, Mahrez, Ozil and maybe even Aguero. In all honesty I'm not that bothered about OR (even though it'll hurt my proud record of 12k lowest finish in the 4 seasons I've played).

As in WC in 33 rather than 36 just so I can have an extra 3 weeks of differentials (and my concern with rotation in GW37 making benchboost less attractive)

      TV - 111.6 (108.7 + 2.9 itb)
      SV - 106.9

As ILF said, it will only hurt you if the expensive players all hit form at the right time.

104.3 SV.. I care nothing about TV though.. Always a cheap option that could come good. That and Ozil and Mahrez basically hold all of my SV anyway and neither of them are going anywhere.

        Fair point GoonerB.
Ozil has a .6 for me though I swapped Mahrez out then in again same as Vardy. I could drop either or both for a late DGW still can't think who at those prices would do better.

The extra value people have accrued will mainly come in useful when you want to re-buy players

      e.g. Mahrez

my SV is only 6.4m (Had him since start (5.5). Now at 7.3m.

So it will give players the option to sell someone like Mahrez and be able to afford to get him back. Those without such funds may want to hold Mahrez. Ultimately in the grand scheme of things I think it will make little difference really.

Unless Hazard, Sanchez, Silva etc started destroying teams like they used to, then TV/SV is just for showing off.

Speaking of which I could hit 112m TV by this weekend. 12/15 rising.

I must say I prefer to have Kun Alexis Ozil and good defenders who cost more and have DGW's coming up.

Go for identical teams but where they get Aguero, you get Lukaku. Lukaku outscores Aguero and you've negated a whole season's worth of TV collection.

Yea, thats an issue late in the game i believe. With all the talk that TV is not imporant, it will become a big factor come WC teams.

My SV is 107 at the moment and am very happy with it, lost some TV because i just sold Payet as well, but its all good.

I don't have a playing keeper this week.

Is it worth using my 1FT to swap Courtois for someone or am I better saving for next week to get Siggy for Wijnaldum without a hit?

    Ok so I'm in danger of wasting a FT this week, been carrying one over for god knows how many weeks. Here it goes;

    Hart
    Fuchs Alderweireld Daniels
    Mahrez Ozil Alli Sigurdsson
    Kane Aguero Vardy

    (Elliot; VVD Bellerin Payet)

Anything you would do here or just lose one of my 2FT's?
