Interview – Ed Masters – FFScout Members League Winner

After an incredible run of success during the final few Gameweeks of the season, our site regular Ed Masters, who posts on the boards as “Mo Mane Mo Problems”, won our Members league and came close to claiming the Fantasy Premier League title itself. Between Gameweek 33 and 37 he leapt from 57th to fourth place and eventually finished in third overall to cap off a remarkable campaign.

Congratulations on a sensational season. Take us through that final Gameweek and especially the final match, where a stellar score from David de Gea and a quiet Marcus Rashford could have seen you take the FPL title.

By half-time on Sunday I decided I couldn’t take it anymore and went to the gym. I felt it was only a matter of time before key players I didn’t own including Andros Townsend, Dusan Tadic, Harry Kane and Riyad Mahrez got something. They all blanked, though, making it really close at the top.

I needed a perfect storm to win overall and even contemplated transferring out Alexis Sanchez, as I knew he would be captained by at least one of the three above me going into Gameweek 38.

I just felt that – given my team name – fate had taken over and I had to captain the in-form Sadio Mane. In the end he did the business but I was let down by Kevin de Bruyne, Eden Hazard, Manuel Lanzini, and Andy Carroll, who were all differentials to the teams above me.

By Tuesday I had virtually given up, to be honest. I needed a very unlikely set of circumstances, which required Chris Smalling and Marcus Rashford being rested or the former being sent off to concede a penalty that De Gea would save. It would have been so harsh on Dimitri – who was top and eventually won FPL – if I had claimed victory due to players being rested. I’d just like to say congratulations to Dimitri, a more than worthy winner.

You had a dreadful first Gameweek, achieving a rank of just 1.4m, but by the end of Gameweek 4 you were ranked 58K. This proved a season-defining set of games – how did you turn it around?

Thanks for reminding me! Fortunately I’d plumped for Riyad Mahrez as my fourth midfielder, who saved me with his 15-point haul. My first four-point hit (there would be another 13!) of the season was important: I removed Nabil Bentaleb (not sure what I was thinking!), Hazard and Branislav Ivanovic for David Silva, Dimitri Payet and Aleksandar Kolarov. I decided early on that this season was going to most definitely be form over fixtures.

How would you rate your first wildcard and why did you use it in Gameweek 7? On the face of it your rank moved from 17K to 1K within two Gameweeks, but by Gameweek 12 you had slid back to 23K after four red arrows. What were your key players on the wildcard, both good and bad.

My first wildcard was fairly average. Only Sanchez came in and scored well (GW7: 20 points , GW8: 16 points). Key players were Sanchez, less intelligent was Cesar Azpilicueta, clearly I thought Chelsea were going to tighten up. Captaining Sergio Aguero and bringing in Jamie Vardy in Gameweek 8 propelled me towards the top 1k. As for the subsequent fall, some suspect transfers, most notably Fabricio Coloccini, who scored one point and a -3 in his first two weeks.

The All Out Attack (AOA) chip looks to have cost you points, but your Gameweek 33 wildcard, Gameweek 34 Bench Boost and Gameweek 37 Triple Captaincy helped earn a move into the top five placings. How important were chips to your season? What do you think of them and what changes would you make?

The AOA chip is awful. In hindsight I’d just save it for a Gameweek when you literally can only field two defenders, yet are pretty sure your front eight will play. If this scenario doesn’t arise, then I wouldn’t use it at all.

In hindsight, and probably my biggest regret, was stubbornly playing my Bench Boost chip in double Gameweek 34. Like a lot of others on Fantasy Football Scout, I had pretty much planned this since the double fixtures were announced. I felt that with Liverpool likely to rotate due to the Europa League that I had not got it quite right, and I ended up only scoring 11 points from my Reds’ contingent. That would have been much lower if Simon Mignolet hadn’t got six points in the final action of the Gameweek.

To rub salt into the wound, Sanchez, who I captained, scored 25 points and Aguero netted 26 points. I felt there was little chance I would get near these hauls for my triple captaincy in double Gameweek 37. In the end Hazard got me 12 points, which could’ve been worse. I do sometimes think ‘if only’ with regards to this – if I had swapped the weeks I used them I would’ve scored an extra 14 points (Alexis Sanchez TC DGW34), and an extra nine points (Bench scored 21 versus Hazard’s 12) with Bench Boost in DGW37. That would have brought 23 extra points and an FPL crown. If only.

Over your previous six seasons your highest finish was 6580th place. What did you do differently this season or was it “the chips wot won it”?

I never really liked FPL until the end of 2013/14 when I caught the bug. That was the season when I first found FFScout, or at least put it into action for FPL purposes. I first found it for the 2012 Euros and, after reading a few articles in April, decided I wanted to win my mini-leagues. I was miles behind, having basically forgotten about my team (as with all the previous years where I don’t think I didn’t end as a ‘dead’ team) but captaining Edin Dzeko for a double Gameweek propelled me hundreds of thousands of places up the overall standings. I still lost those mini-leagues, so decided it would need a full season’s effort. So I kept reading FFScout over the summer and made a fairly decent starting team for 2014/15 before ending 6580th overall.

I learnt a lot last season and put that into effect for this one. The reason I did so well this year was due to my value fascination. I hate losing money on players and love building value. At one point my transfer value (meaningless I know) was something like £112m. That was easy to do this season as players seemed to find form and trigger huge bandwagons – Mahrez and Dele Alli are two that spring to mind. In the end, I think the fact I managed to quite easily get Sanchez, Hazard, De Bruyne and Aguero into the same final day team perhaps was as a result of the previous 37 Gameweeks’ work. Perhaps fittingly for the season, though, it was the budget Rashford ‘wot won it’ for Dimitri.

Who were your star players this season? Who were your flops?
Mahrez went into my Gameweek 1 team. I was a bit worried about the Tinkerman’s plans and how this might impact on his minutes, but from what I’d seen from the opportunities Nigel Pearson had given him in 2014/15, the Algerian looked like the perfect fourth midfielder. Other stars were the ever reliable Mesut Ozil and Vardy, who kept me ticking along nicely for large parts of the season.

There are too many flops to mention them all, but special mentions to Bentaleb, Sebastian Coates and Coloccini. If Hazard hadn’t edged me so close to the title in the final weeks, I’d probably have included him in this esteemed list.

What Members functions helped you the most and why? Please give examples of how key decisions were made through Members tools.

I used the ‘Rate my team’ tool pretty much every week, but didn’t always take it as gospel. I think the stats available through the members tables gives you a wealth of information that can be used to good effect – it certainly helped me bring in some players I wouldn’t have, or perhaps more importantly ignore ones I would have been tempted to bring in.

I remember transferring in Anthony Martial during his initial hot streak, despite knowing his conversion rate was so high. In hindsight I wish I had paid attention and not acquired him, as he quickly dropped off in terms of returns, as the statistics predicted.

I’m not really a fan of the Premier League, I only follow it for FPL, so didn’t watch any live football and watched maybe TV highlights once or twice. Ultimately, I think the most valuable tool on FFScout is its community. If you read enough of the comments you spot trends and there is always great advice on offer. For example, it was the community who said that Sunderland’s Jermain Defoe and Patrick van Aanholt were unlikely to start in Gameweek 38, so I benched them.  They did indeed fail to make the starting XI. It’s the little things like this that can make a big difference over the course of a season.

Finally I’d like to shout out my friends in the ‘Champs League’ mini-league. I don’t play FPL for money, but Darren, Andrew and Ed will be treating myself, James and David to a nice dinner at some point in July.

Ed won it without watching any premier league live football and highlights "once or twice" ???!!

So basically, you can win it by picking the right players that the community discussion throws up.

Simon March watched hardly any football and won it . It's not that simple the community do get it wrong occasionally the Walcott bandwagon comes to mind . My point is that being a member of the community does not guarantee success.

In fairness, you need to be very selective. Some awful picks floating around on here this season. A mixture of advice and your own gut feeling. Good example being when Hazard's form was awful, he played Bournemouth I think (?), had one shot against them and people actually brought him back in citing an improvement in his form. He then did nothing.

So if you're not watching football to see these things, then it's purely down to stats and luck? I brought in Mane for the Villa game (in which he came on for 5 mins and scored) and Man City at home, as that fixture was either side of CL semi final legs so suspected rotation / poor display from City. Maybe that's all the intelligence you need - pick the attacking threat based on form and nice fixtures. Sell the Hazard's, Silva's, Sanchez's quickly if they're not returning the points.

Who would've advise selling Hazard after ONE week as a good move?

        1. Somalion
          • 14 Years

Not even just luck. But say you see a slight upturn in a player who has been poor for most of the season. You can either go for him, or ignore it because it's a once off.

Definitely form + fixtures is a good way to approach it, and have a broad consideration for fixtures (teams like City this season were well capable of shipping goals).

Not selling Hazard, but having been useless for a couple of months, people bought him in because he took one shot in a game. That was the logic, and it was brutal thinking.

Sometimes the luck aspect lets you down 😉

I had a very good run of captaincy for a few weeks when I just followed form and fixtures. Switched between Ozil, Payet, Mahrez and had some mammoth scores.

            So what is that squad?

The FPL Overall Dream Team with Mahrez captain and no auto-subs or vice-captain only scores 2286 and includes four Arsenal players (I haven't checked whether it was affordable), which is 191 points short of your total.

You could replace Koscielny with Kompany/Fuchs, Lukaku with Aguero, Ayew with Payet and add three more bench players, which would leave something very similar to our FFS Team of the Season, but is that sufficient and affordable?

I make that 2296 points from your first 12 players for a cost of 80.0m.

So that leaves 20.0m for 2 bench defenders and 1 bench midfielder to fill in for 14 matches missed by defenders, 18 missed by midfielders and 11 missed by forwards.

Which players did you have in mind to get the additional 181 points from the bench?

Ayew appears to be the best 1st sub (7.0m, 111 points in 18 appearances off the bench).
Kompany (6.0m, 67 points in 11 appearances) appears to be the best 2nd sub.
                That leaves 7.0m for the 3rd sub, another defender to play in GWs 3, 6-8, 14-16, 18-19, 30 & 35-38.
Alderweireld (5.0m, 52 points in these 14 appearances) appears to be the best 3rd sub.

That gives a total score of 2526 at a cost of 98.0m.

                Can anyone beat that total?

Promoting Kompany to 1st sub would reduce the total by 1 point.

                        Good call.
                        Arnautovic (6.0m, 125 in 20 as 1st sub).
Aldwerweireld would then not be needed for GW19, reducing his score by 1 to 51 points from 13.

Revised total now 2530, cost 97.0m.

                    Bellerin missed GW1.
                    Kompany comes in in GWs 1, 3-5, 11-12, 18 and 28-30.
I seem to have counted GW30 twice, so he actually only scored 58 in 10 appearances, which means the total score is reduced to 2517.

                        Bellerin also missed GW12.

I wonder whether promoting Kompany into the starting 11 might be an improvement?

Good pickup. I only had him out for 30 when having a quick look. I thought about that but you may lose some big scores elsewhere. There are quite a few combos, finding the optimal one is the hard part 🙂

Promoting Kompany into the starting eleven and dropping Bellerin to 2nd sub results in Kompany scoring 19 compared with Bellerin's 12 in GWs 2, 10, 18, 26 and 34.

So the revised total now rises to 2537.

The odds against selecting the perfect dead squad before the season even started would be are astronomically large.

Last season it was incredibly difficult to find this fifteen even in hindsight. A number of us tried and failed until Billy Gilmore's computer program eventually came up with two possible squads that would each have won FPL, but only by two points.

When I say last season, I mean 2014-15.

Apparently it was somewhat easier to construct theoretical ideal dead squads that would have won FPL by greater margins in at least some earlier seasons, but (as Twisted Saltergater points out) the chips will make a big difference.

The dead squad would not be allowed to make any transfers, change the bench, captain or vice-captain, and would also not be allowed to play any wildcards or other chips.

Incidentally, what were the results of the Dead Team Challenge, for which a number of us submitted teams at the beginning of the season?

      Great stuff Doos.

Although for France it's not really relevant for penalties and FK as Cabaye is not in the first 11, and for corner kicks, Valbuena hasn't been called up and Payet is not nailed on yet.

Can I ask why all the love for Perisic? 🙂

I currently have him in as I needed a 7.5m mid but he's not on set pieces and he plays in a team that have under-performed at recent tournaments? I know he's been in good form for Inter and scored goals vs some weak teams in the qualifiers (and Italy) but will that translate to the finals??

Saw he scored well in qualifiers, heard good reports about him at Inter, not much else at 7.5m is tempting me, so I casually threw him in as a placeholder.

I didn't look into the teams he had scored against, so now I'm considering dropping him to a 7.0m and upgrading elsewhere.

Hmmm... I did have Griezman (sp?), Muller & Kane up front to start with but Lewandowski always seems to be the opposite of Ronaldo in that he seems to scrore no matter what the opposition.

I dont know much about Weiss except that I have seen quite a few people recommending him.

Ozil I agree is overpriced. I cant afford KDB who I prefer without downgrading considerably elsewhere and no-one seems to know which French mids will start.

Alli may not play 100% but I reckone he will score when he does play and I should have cover if he doesnt.

It seems to me that there is a real lack of any obvious premium midfield options for the euros. Instead of investing in the likes of KDB or Ozil, would it not be better to go for mid-price differentials and invest heavily in the forwards and (to a lesser extent) the defence?

    Patricio - Kozacik
    Hector - Koscielny - Carvajal (/Juanfran) - Denayer - Matel
Alaba - Perisic - Rafa Silva - Xhaka - Hamsik
    Griezmann - Lewandowski - Muller

The defence can be squared up once the cheap routes into the big teams are established post-friendlies

Not sure about double Italy defence. Their team just doesn't look very good with Marchisio and Verratti injured and no decent striker. Maybe they'll just park the bus though, lol.

Yes that's what I think will happen, dead certain quarter finalists as usual.

Been searching through the Euro list of reasonably-priced midfield options. Need a nice balance but trying to whittle it down to five is proving tricky.
    Here's my 'Watch List';

    ************************************************
Alaba - (has set pieces and is Star Player)
    Fabregas - (assist machine)
    Alli - (absolute boss)
    Perisic - (nice goal record)
Martial - (OOP, but game time risk)... 9m so not very cheap, but has potential
Hamsik - (good goal scoring record and Star of his country)
Rafa Silva - (dirt cheap 5th mid)

    *************************************************

    (feel free to add...) 🙂

Weiss - (at 6.5 could be gold if he can regularly assist and grab a goal)

Forsberg 5.5 - Good season for Leipzig and playing next to Ibra.

Berg and Ibra up front together? 4-2-2-2?

Yeah Berg and Ibra as it stands now, perhaps Guidetti can oust Berg in Friendlies but Berg had a good season in Panathinaiokos. It's not even sur Forsberg is a starter but highly likely, I'll be pissed if he is not.

I guess there's nothing we can teach him then.

That's true. I have no idea if there are any cheap players who will actually start.

Monitor Denayer, might be a straight replacement for Kompany.

Bergen and Carvajal don't look like first choice currently.

No but plenty of 4.5s. Prodl's my favourite.
