Euro 16 Stats Preview Movie

Earlier this week we made a raft of Euro 16 related statistics available to those who sign up early to our 2016/17 season memberships.

As promised, we’ve now produced a movie highlighting this Euro 16 data, along with a guide on how the statistics can be accessed and used to help contribute to decision making.

We’ve provided statistics not only for the tournament itself but also from the Qualifying Rounds and 12 months of international friendlies involving the participating nations. This includes the recent matches and all those played right up to Friday’s tournament kick-off.

You can view the preview movie below or via our YouTube channel.

Memberships from the 2015/16 expired on Wednesday June 1 but you can now renew to get access to the members area.

The Euro 16 offering comes packaged with the regular Fantasy Football Scout membership. You can get the Euro 16 statistics and all the usual Premier League statistics and tools for the 2016/17 campaign once that gets underway.

Existing registered users can upgrade via this link. New users, who are yet to register an account, can sign up via this link.

Payments can be made through Paypal or via Stripe using debit or credit cards. Membership will increase to £15.00 on conclusion of the first weekend of the Premier League season.

    Any problems here?
    Sommer - Rui Patrício
    Juanfran - Rami - Dier - Hector - Denayer
    Matuidi - Alaba - Fàbregas - Özil - Wilshere
    Ronaldo - Morata - Giroud

If Nolito turns out to be more nailed than Morata, then he comes in and Matuidi becomes Pogba, Wilshere gets upgraded.
    A few strategy observations too:
    - France and Spain are favorites, so should be heavily represented in fantasy teams.
    - Spain are fantastic defensively.
    - In general, with defenders you get better balance if you go for the cheaper nailed-on defenders from leading sides, rather than 6.5 or 7.0 defenders.
    - In the group stage, the last player you rotate in should be the strongest player available, since this is the one player you absolutely cannot rotate out. Fortunately, this year the likely highest scorer is also playing on the final matchday, so should be in everyone's team (Ronaldo). Ibrahimovic is a decent alternative.
    - It's best not to rotate in any defenders on the final matchday, since their scoring is less predictable.
    - Every player slot needs to be used in the early rounds; towards the end as more expensive teams get through, you can start carrying non-players.
    - Keep in mind that you'll want at least a couple of 4.0 players on your bench for the final, so plan towards that possibility.
    - It's best to WC after GW2 because GW3 will see the most rotation and you'll want a full roster of players. Only consider a wildcard after GW if your team is a mess through suspensions, injuries, and rotations.
    - Try to have a good captaincy option for every matchday.
    - Make sure your second goalkeeper option is the stronger one.
    - When selecting players to rotate out, five points is usually stick, three is twist, four is uncertain.
    - The goal in the elimination matches is to select players from the teams most likely to win. If you get this right, you don't need the wildcard again; if you get a result wrong, it's still worth a couple of hits rather than saving the wildcard.
    - This game rewards punts more than FPL (because of 7 GW instead of 38).
    - There will most likely be higher scoring in the group stage than in the elimination games. Lean more toward defence as the tournament progresses.
    - Young players pushing for recognition or a big move are especially worth watching, since it's often a break-out tournament for young stars (Lukuka, Morata, Alaba, Pogba, etc.).

This is my attempt at a conservative list of good strategic principles for this game, Any that are wrong (if so, why)? Any important ones missing?

A much belated reply, but the goalkeeper logic is that you can take a punt with GK 1, who might be less likely to keep a clean sheet, and then have GK 2 coming in as backup, perhaps from Spain, Italy, Germany or another strong defensive side. This way if GK 1 succeeds, then you don't substitute, but if GK 1 fails, then you have a good backup. It's not good odds to transfer in an Irish keeper, for example, after you French keeper fails. The one you transfer in is the one you're stuck with, so it's best to make them the low-risk option.

True. I'm hoping Fàbregas is a false 9 or 10 and that Özil is a 10 and Alaba the key playmaker. I'd prefer Pogba over Matuidi, but can't do it if I'm keeping Ronaldo (which I definitely am). Wilshere is the worst pick of the lot. Thanks for feedback!

Fabregas is not nailed. Del Bosque told to the press that he'll be playing 4-1-4-1 with Busquets as 6 and he told he got to choose 2 players, who will play in fornt of him, out of 5 to complete the midfield from Koke, Thiago, Iniesta, Fabregas, San Jose .

Thanks for posting. There is some sound advice in here but some of it is fuzzy logic. For example the point on goalkeepers...

The maximum you can hope to get from a goalkeeper is a clean sheet. If your first keeper gets the clean sheet you keep it, if not you swap. If either keeper gets a clean sheet (or if both do) you have achieved what you set out to - if neither keep a clean sheet, you don't. The order they play is completely irrelevant (provided they don't play on the same day).

I'm also sceptical about the best player on the last day point. My best player is one who I want to give a shot at the captaincy. Saving my captaincy for the last game day is extremely risky BUT not captaining my best player at any point (especially if he costs 12m) seems a waste. This is the primary reason I don't have Ronaldo in my team

        1. Camp No No

Agreed with this too. 🙂 It's a bit buggering that we have Ronaldo playing against teams from the weaker end on the last day, because if you have him basically you won't accept a goal from a forward as your captaincy result, as you always except that Ronaldo can better that. Would you accept a goal + assist? I'm not sure I would, it would be a very difficult decision to make. Ronaldo in CF position, current scoring form, in free kicks and penalties, may score a 3-4 goals against any of these weakish opponents.

I would probably rather have my expected good players first, and only use the bench if they fail.

Fair points. I still think in general that the Euro games rewards having your better player as the one who can't be transferred out. I think this outweighs the captaincy situation. Hopefully with so many shots at a captain, you end of with someone who scores a couple of goals, even if that means that you don't captain Ronaldo when he scores a hattrick. Thanks for thoughtful scepticism.

Agreed with this. There's a chance for save points of course, but basically you've got two takes to get that CS, and it doesn't matter in which order you take them.

But most of the advices are really sensible, and it's a good strategy note list imo.

I think del Bosque likes Fàbregas a lot and knows he can follow team instructions well (like in the 2012, when he performed quite effectively as a false 9). I'm still waiting for more information on Morata. del Bosque not taking Costa or Torres makes me think that Morata is the intended no. 1 goal scorer now. This is definitely a situation to keep an eye on. Thanks for thoughts.

Good post and I agree with most of this. However, I don't think having strongest players last is necessarily a good thing as if you are in the fortunate position of having attacking players who have all performed well then it forces you to remove one as you definitely wouldn't not play Ronaldo. It also gives you a tougher twist or stick choice for captaincy.

"In the group stage, the last player you rotate in should be the strongest player available"

That doesn't mean Ronaldo should be in your team. What's the point in saving your best player for last, when he sucks so much value out of the rest of your squad? I'd rather have multiple expensive and strong captaincy candidates, than bank on Ronaldo coming in and have to put the armband on a cheap player (Wilshere?!) before that.

And if this game rewards punts more than FPL does, that means it punishes punts more than FPL does. Trying to be too clever in the first few weeks could leave you with a mountain to climb when there are only four rounds left.

Fair point on captaincy options. An alternative might be a cheaper but dependable player to rotate in on the final day. Maybe another attacking player from Belgium or Portugal would do the trick.

"France and Spain are favorites, so should be heavily represented in fantasy teams."

Dubious. Their players should be selected on the basis of value, same as any other player. If Giroud was €11m I wouldn't want him. If he was €6m I certainly would want him. As he is €8.5m I have to decide whether he suits my squad better than Kane or Morata (for example). He doesn't get a spot simply because he's French.

We have a wildcard before the R16. Time enough to concentrate on the teams we think will go far then.

"In the group stage, the last player you rotate in should be the strongest player available, since this is the one player you absolutely cannot rotate out."

Also dubious. What you have written is a reasonable strategy but not the only one. You could also have a player of less high potential in that slot and hope not to need them.

"Fortunately, this year the likely highest scorer is also playing on the final matchday, so should be in everyone's team (Ronaldo)."

I absolutely disagree, firstly that he's the likely highest scorer and secondly that he should be in everyone's team. He's certainly not getting into mine.

"It's best not to rotate in any defenders on the final matchday, since their scoring is less predictable."

Why is it any less predictable than a midfielder of similar cost who is also quite likely just to get appearance points?

"It's best to WC after GW2 because GW3 will see the most rotation and you'll want a full roster of players. Only consider a wildcard after GW1 if your team is a mess through suspensions, injuries, and rotations."

Wildcarding after the R16 is also a very reasonable strategy.

"Try to have a good captaincy option for every matchday."

Not a priority as long as you have 3 good contenders. In fact, the opportunity to make a wildcard captain pick or two early on in the round (which is afforded by the ability to move the armband if they fail) is too good to be missed. You could get a big advantage that way.

"Make sure your second goalkeeper option is the stronger one."

I don't see why. You just want a clean sheet and/or a good save score. If the first one doesn't get it you try the 2nd.

"When selecting players to rotate out, five points is usually stick, three is twist, four is uncertain."

Disagreed again. This game is a sprint, like a FPL season beginning in GW33. If you want to win it you will probably need to "twist" on higher scores than 5. Obviously depending on who the replacement would be. But the game requires to be played with risk if you are trying to win it.

Some interesting counter-points, even if with a touch of polemical exaggeration.
I think defenders tend to be quite up and down with their point scoring, whereas good midfielders and attackers tend to give a more reliable flow of points. I didn't think this would be a controversial observation. I like the idea of the final rotation being for a lower-risk player. I think the odds are probably better of Ronaldo getting points than a Portuguese defender.
Why three good captaincy options instead of five?
With the goalkeepers, let's say you have there's a chance that the Albanian keeper might have a fantastic day and keep a clean sheet with plenty of saves, but the Albanian keeper might only do this for 1 in 4 matches, whereas the French goalkeeper might get a clean sheet for 1 in 2 matches but not get as many saves. The Spanish goalkeeper is likely to score more points across the group stage, but the Albanian goalkeeper might have one fantastic game. You end up with more points for your team if you make sure you catch the Albanian goalkeeper on the day he scores 14 points, but have the more reliable Spanish goalkeeper rotating in for the two games in which the Albanian keeper scores -1. I'm sure someone who is better with statistics than I am can lay this out more clearly with probabilities, but I'm pretty sure that having the better keeper second gives you the greater probability of higher points. I hope I've made that more clear and would be interested to know why this doesn't persuade, if it doesn't, as a few people appear to disagree.
The stick or twist number is a real gamble. You're brave if you twist at 5 -- and also having an excellent gameweek if you can do that.
        Thanks for some thoughtful observations.

"I think the odds are probably better of Ronaldo getting points than a Portuguese defender."

They should be. He costs more than double. We are back to the high-value player subbing-in last thing which is a different argument.

"Why three good captaincy options instead of five?"

Depends what you call "good". I am perfectly happy with the idea of captaining Schär on gameday 2. He could conceivably come up with a goal and a clean sheet for 12 points. If he does I'm sorted. If not I have bigger fish behind him. But I wouldn't be so happy with Schär as a captain option later on in the round.

"With the goalkeepers... I'm pretty sure that having the better keeper second gives you the greater probability of higher points."

Well, this depends on your squad structure. What you have written (the full version) makes sense and is reasonable. Unfortunately it means investing at least €10m in GKs, maybe €10.5m. I don't want to spend more than €9m really because I think the budget is beter spent elsewhere. So what I want is 2 starting GKs with a good chance of saves and a reasonable chance of a clean sheet. Doesn't matter which order they play in. I would doubtless stick on 4 points anyway from my GK.

"The stick or twist number is a real gamble. You're brave if you twist at 5 -- and also having an excellent gameweek if you can do that."

It depends on whether you are trying to win or just to do reasonably well. Over such a short period you can count on it that someone will nail almost every big decision. You will therefore need to play with risk if you want to compete at the top. Not that that is compulsory of course.

Still in tinkering mode but as we stand:

        Kozacik - Patricio
        Alba - Ramos - Schar/Rodriguez - Hector - Strinic
        Payet - Matuidi - Perisic - Alaba - x
        Muller - Giroud - Nolito

x = undecided, someone likely around the £6.5/7.0m margain (leaning towards Dele Alli).

Not worth £7.5m imho, but a decent option.

Slovakia debut in the Euros. He's on pens (one of the only other mids you can get around that price with that). Their best player. Two good fixtures before England. I like it as a differential if you have 4 other good mids.

    Help please....

    Rui Patricio
    Dier, Hector, Rami, Rodriguez

I wouldn't take out Perisic next week though, still a good option. Someone else for Konoplyanka 🙂

Not a fan of Ozil otherwise it is nice 🙂 Ozil hasn't taken a corner since 2015 and goals are much more important than assists in this game. Consider Payet/Matuidi. I'm off now. 🙂

Untrue about the corners. He took one just the other day.

I agree though, don't think he's a great pick. Seems to play deeper for Germany than he does for Arsenal.

Ozil was amazing this year with Arsenal, and he's better when surrounded by players who understand how he plays. Ozil's passes are too genius for Arsenal players...the Germans are on his same page. I think if you aren't going with Muller, Ozil is essential.

One of my main debates. On Perisic at the mo, but think I'll swap to Yanka after the Germany game.

Sorry for my ignorance but is it the McDonalds game which most of you are playing and posting RMTs for?
Wanting to play a Euros game that doesn't involved multi-entrants (i.e not the Telegraph where the winner will have entered 50+ teams)
