Scout Notes – Euro 2016 Final

An Eder goal in the second half of extra time secured Portugal their first ever international title in a final that slowly grew into a compelling spectacle.

Portugal 1 France 0 (aet)

Euro 2016 got the final the tournament deserved – a tight, tactical battle high on skill and commitment, low on thrills and decided by a late goal.

Portugal spent their time in France finding a way to progress: scoring three against Hungary to scrape through as a third-place group qualifier; nullifying the threat of Croatia and then stealing the win deep in extra time and, finally, beating the hosts despite losing the talismanic Cristiano Ronaldo to a first-half injury.

France had the chances, out-shooting their opponents 18-10 and forcing goalkeeper Rui Patricio into seven saves. At the other end, Hugo Lloris wasn’t even troubled until a mishit Nani cross and then an acrobatic volley on the follow-up from Ricardo Quaresma in the 80th minute.

The Spurs keeper could do nothing about Eder’s winner, a fine shot from the edge of the area which was his first ever goal for his country. Joao Moutinho provided the assist.

It was harsh on France, but only to a degree.

Portugal grew into the match, coping first with the loss of Ronaldo, then riding their luck when Golden Boot winner Antoine Griezmann missed a golden chance and substitute Andre-Pierre Gignac hit the post, before subduing their hosts as the final went into its second hour.

France dominated every key attacking stat bar the most important one of all. Moussa Sissoko capped a superb personal display by firing in the most attempts (five), Kingsley Coman topped the chances created table with four (after coming on for Dmitri Payet, who created three), and Griezmann delivered 10 crosses.

Portugal have spent the tournament bending but never breaking, though, and that resolve was there for all to see in the final – the top four clearances, blocks and interception figures (CBI) all came from the new champions, with 17 from the outstanding Pepe and 13 from Raphael Guerreiro. The latter also won three tackles and recorded two shots and two crosses for an excellent DraftKings showing.

The result did not favour the majority of Fantasy managers in the Uefa game managers, given that French players were heavily backed by most last night.

The new European champions were, ultimately, made in the image of the 2016 tournament as a whole, with organisation and doggedness trumping individuality and attacking flair.

It's not important but that doesn't stop us going for it

Your ID is given based on how early you sign up. First person to sign up gets #1, second #2 etc etc

Not important - just looks cool. Also if other people view your team and you've got a low ID it gives them a sign that your are a die-hard fpl player. The quicker you get your fpl team set up the lower your ID will be.

Will depend upon each individuals resting time, fitness schedule and the club. Can't see Arsene letting both Sanchez and Giroud miss the beginning of the season with Welbeck probably still out for example.

No guarantee they'll miss any but teams should be concerned with burn-out. Remember Alexis last year? Wouldn't stop training even when on holiday and given games off on his return but still had a pretty crappy early season with some injuries.

A tad expensive. Might still have him. Southampton will be good and he made some decent stats at Norwich. Let's say, same or better than Sterling in Liverpool and City. Of course he's more central there, but that's also a worse team, producing less attack. And worse than Southampton, for sure.

Redmond's price last season was 5.5m and he had a sub-par season. Tadic was priced at 7.0m last season and was a proven PL player.

Putting KDB in there is just a joke, right? One good performance against a weak Hungarian team and that's it. Anyway, my EURO best XI would be:

      R. Patricio
      Pepe Sigthorsson Glik Guerreiro
      Błaszczykowski W. Carvalho Ramsey Payet
      Griezmann Bale

Bbc didn't even have Patricio as an option to choose from their squad selector. Pogba got voted top midfielder God knows how. Bonucci and Pepe at back Kimmich at right back and Perisic over KDB for me

Patrício won his spot having a monster final

Pogba could be in, there are 2 or 3 spots for players who did ok (maybe CR7, Cédric, Giroud, Özil)
Srna, Perisic, Modric, Błaszczykowski, KDB, Haz performed better but left earlier

I have always gone with a 4.5m midfielder as an enabler in the past, but I have been thinking about it a little bit and wouldn't it make more sense to get a striker as an enabler?

Midfielders get an extra point per goal, clean sheet points, and there are generally more quality cheap options to choose from in midfield.

Think I might try it this year.

    Thoughts?

Well I thought that not having any strikers at that price who actually play was a pretty convincing line of reasoning!

You really need to be looking at £5.5 for a bench striker who's guaranteed minutes, at which point, you probably won't want to bench them anyway.

              • 10 Years

Your use of QED suggests that you had demonstrated that there are no 4.5 priced forwards. Whether that is true or not, you didn't demonstrate it at all. That's all I said.

About the 4.5 priced enabler, it's an enabler. If I'll have a one, I don't plan to play him.

A 6.0m striker is better than a 6.0m midfielder with a few exceptions. I'm thinking of going for abel hernandez. I'm not keen on Hull but he is the centre of their attacks. Jordan Rhodes would be brilliant but there hasn't been much noise about him on any front.

I've always found a 4.5 mid more appealing due to the way teams pack the midfield. This means that if a cheap striker is an option you'd get him anyway, not as an enabler. It also allows you to be reactive to who the cheap striker of the time is by being able to downgrade any of your striking options.

Recently the good plan has appeared to be actually go with 2-3 cheap to mid price forwards and put money elsewhere altogether. But I'm not sure the supply of cheap surprise forwards will continue like the previous seasons.

It will depend on the pricing and who will turn out to be the cheap surprises.

Anyway, I usually make the most points playing 4 at back, might go that way again.

    7. Play Pal

If you have a striker who you bench every week then you are eliminating a third of your striker places.
If you have a mid who you bench every week then you are eliminating a fifth of your midfield places.

Over 38 GWs, ditching a striker will have more of an impact.

At least that is the way I see it and I have been a 'casual' the last two season.

Wait and see prices, there might be an appealing 4.5m who makes the perfect bench material.

      1. Camp No No

But the thing is that if you look at scoring, the defs and midfields generally outscore the strikers.

        1. Play Pal
          • 7 Years
          7 years, 10 months ago

This is true, however the most popular formation in the top 1k is 3-4-3.

You get less striker positions (3) so make the most of them.

          1. Camp No No
            • 10 Years
            7 years, 10 months ago

On the other hand, that may be because most of people who take this seriously believe in the 3-4-3. Last two seasons it has also been the best formation, imo, but that has been because of the abundance of high scoring cheap strikers. And still the best scoring affordable 11 would most of the time had only 1 or 2 strikers. So, if the supply of high scoring cheap forwards dries out, we might be well advised to try and break into the top of the top by breaking the template formation and having only 1 or 2 strikers on field.

Only reason I want the game out soon is in case of injuries to key players or transfers, etc.

Really want Benteke to end up at Palace at around 7.5m would be straight into my team

7.5m for Benteke is a lot, isn't it?

At least he scored with the armband last season, before I ditched him on the early WC

I love this guy so much! If he is under 7.0, I must get him.

They are nowhere near Negredo's quality IMO 🙂

Agreed. And he's a good striker, good stats everywhere he's played. I'm not sure he's gonna a. get the delivery or b. particularly try/care at boro though
