Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round-Up

Henrikh Mkhitaryan bags his first goal for United in a 4-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain earns Arsenal a draw in Lens, Victor Janssen and Michy Batshuayi open their accounts for Spurs and Chelsea and Salomon Rondon nets as the Baggies see off Vitesse.

Borussia Dortmund 4 Man United 1

Henrikh Mkhitaryan netted his first goal for United as Jose Mourinho’s side were well beaten by Dortmund in Shanghai.

After featuring as a number 10 against Wigan on his debut, the Armenian international started on the left before swapping flanks with Adnan Januzaj later in the first half. Juan Mata – who was afforded the central support role behind Memphis Depay, then Marcus Rashford after the break – supplied the assist for Mkhitaryan’s consolation.

Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia were fielded as full-backs and the latter continued to build up his fitness by playing the full 90 minutes along with new boy Eric Bailly. Mainly utilised as a centre-half by Louis van Gaal, Daley Blind partnered Ander Herrera in central midfield, allowing Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo to be handed 45 minutes each alongside Bailly in the heart of the back-four.

With a number of his first-team still yet to participate in the summer action, Mourinho was unconcerned over the result:

“At the moment, I’m not even creating a team. So many players are not here. We’re creating individuals’ form and trying to bring these players to a good condition. For the new signings and all of the players, they had a chance to play 45, 70 or 90 minutes. It’s very, very important and I can imagine it will take a long time to recover from this effort in the game. In this weather, in reality, at this stage of pre-season for them individually it’s good.”

Man United XI: Johnstone (Romero 46), Valencia (Pereira 75), Bailly, Jones (Rojo 46), Shaw, Blind (McNair 66), Herrera, Mata, Mkhitaryan (Januzaj 66), Lingard (Young 46), Depay (Rashford 46).

Lens 1 Arsenal 1

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain netted the Gunners’ equaliser in a 1-1 stalemate in Lens last night.

In his first appearance for five months, the fit-again midfielder chipped in after being teed up by fellow substitute Serge Gnabry with just nine minutes remaining.

With many of his regulars still yet to return to training due to the recent Euro 2016 tournament, Arsene Wenger’s side contained just one of last season’s guaranteed starters, left-back Nacho Monreal.

The likes of Per Mertesacker, Francis Coquelin, Mohamed Elneny, Theo Walcott and Alex Iwobi (who was handed the central support role) were also named in the XI, with Walcott seeing a goal ruled out for offside.

Given that this was their first match of the summer, it was no surprise to see Wenger make numerous changes over the course of the second period, with only Mertesacker, Coquelin and Callum Chambers afforded the full 90 minutes to step up their fitness.

Arsenal XI: Martinez (Macey 46); Debuchy (Bielik 46), Mertesacker, Chambers, Monreal (Gibbs 46); Elneny (Campbell 46), Coquelin; Walcott (Zelalem 77), Iwobi (Willock 77), Reine-Adelaide (Oxlade-Chamberlain 46), Akpom (Gnabry 46).

Vitesse 1 West Brom 2

Salomon Rondon and Callum McManaman grabbed a goal apiece as the Baggies registered a second successive victory on Thursday evening.

Tony Pulis handed Jonny Evans and Gareth McAuley their first taste of action after the duo returned to the fold a little later than usual due to their exertions for Northern Ireland in Euro 2016. The pair were afforded just over 45 minutes apiece in a match that saw the Baggies boss make ten second-half changes, with only Craig Dawson playing from start to finish.

Jonathan Leko recovered from the knock that saw him miss the previous friendly against Kidderminster Harriers to take up the left flank berth in a 4-2-3-1, with new boy Matt Phillips again starting on the opposite wing. The youngster terrorised the Vitesse defence and drew a foul that led to Rondon’s opener courtesy of a 25-yard free-kick.

McManaman also staked a claim for minutes out wide, though – emerging from the bench as a replacement for Leko early in the second period, he produced an eye-catching winner as Pulis’ side scored twice for the second match running.

West Brom XI: Foster (Myhill 45); Dawson, McAuley (Fitzwater 48), Olsson (Wilson 48), Evans (McClean 48); Fletcher (Field 48), Yacob (Gardner 48); Phillips (Roberts 48), Morrison (Berahino 48), Leko (McManaman 48); Rondon (Lambert 48).

Atus Ferlach 0 Chelsea 8

Loic Remy bagged a hat-trick, whilst new boy Michy Batshuayi and Pedro both netted twice in a behind-closed doors friendly against local Austrian outfit Atus Ferlach on Thursday.

Antonio Conte once again lined his side up in a 4-2-4 formation, with Ruben Loftus-Cheek utilised as a central striker – the youngster bagged a couple of assists, whilst Juan Cuadrado also earned an assist in an impressive second-half showing on the flank. John Obi Mikel was also in the goals thanks to a deflected effort.

Conte made six changes at the break as he afforded a number of players who joined up with the squad this week – including Pedro, Batshuayi and Cesc Fabregas – crucial pitch time.

Chelsea first half XI: Blackman, Azpilicueta, Miazga, Hector, Baba Rahman, Kenedy, Mikel, Chalobah, Atsu, Loftus-Cheek, Remy.

Chelsea second half XI: Blackman, Cuevas, Cahill, Miazga (Chalobah), Baba, Cuadrado, Fabregas, Mikel, Pedro, Loftus-Cheek (Remy), Batshuayi.

Tottenham 3 Rotherham 1

Vincent Janssen grabbed his first goal for Spurs in a behind-closed-doors friendly win over Rotherham on Thursday afternoon.

Tottenham’s summer signing was supplied by right-back Kieran Trippier to level matters after his side went behind before youngsters Shayon Harrison and Marcus Edwards (who also supplied an assist) found the net to secure a 3-1 win.

Although the club’s official website didn’t list a full starting XI, they did reveal that first-team squad players such as Victor Wanyama, Nacer Chadli, Heung-min Son and Ryan Mason were all handed a run-out as Spurs prepare to fly to Australia to face Juventus and Atletico Madrid next week.

Fantasy Football Daily Hot Topic - Sunderland assets

With David Moyes being announced as the new Sunderland manager this morning does that make you more or less likely to pick up one of their players for your GW1 squad?

Moyes doesn't have the best reputation after the one year stint at Manchester United but going back to his time at Everton he did much better.

Sunderlands opening fixtures are fairly tough - mci - MID - sot - EVE - tot. Will you be waiting to see how they perform or jumping on straight away?

In defence the premium option is Van Aanholt who picked up 6 goals and 4 assists last season, or will you be hoping for goals and BPs from Kone or Kaboul?

Will anyone be looking at the Sunderland attack? Jeremain Lens managed a modest 3 goals and 4 assists last season with Khazri getting 2 goals and 2 assists in 1071 minutes. Up front there's the ever reliable Jermaine Defoe but at 33 years old do we think Moyes will look to sign a new striker or 2?

his united team loved to cross plus he allowed his full backs in his everton team to flourish (baines in particular)

I am going to be watching the full backs and wingers closely

Yeah 4.5m for PvA would probably make it a much easier choice. Perhaps when the fixtures clear up.

If you look at the first 7 they do have 4 fairly nice home fixtures though:

        mci - MID - sot - EVE - tot - CPL - WBA

I'm happy to have a Sunderland defender for sure I do think PvA will work out to be a good pick, I just prefer to go with Kone for 0.5 less at first. At least until bargains mids/strikers make themselves known and we have some extra $$$ knocking around.

On a personal level I'm delighted for Moyes, I think this could be s good marriage for both the club and David, I think they need each other right now.

No rush to jump in with those fixtures I think. Here's a thought. I bet Moyes won't fancy PVA much in defence, I wonder if he'll stick him further forward! An OOP PVA, just imagine! It's the stuff that fantasy dreams are made of.

I'm thinking this aswell. Let's be honest, PvA isn't a great defender, I can see moyes picking someone better in that respect. But as a winger, I think he's ahead of others in the squad, maybe even lens?

    10. PogChamp

Defoe for me. A goal every two games which i reckon is ok for £7m.

I had Koné in my draft team because Sunderland under Allardyce were a 'know what you are getting' good option. He has now been removed and I won't have any Sunderland till I see how they are shaping up under Moyes.

In essence I will start with caution about players new to the PL and managers with new teams. Mourinho excepted - he's a serial winner and his new teams usually start pretty well.

There are plenty of established managers with strong defensive credentials and with cheap defender options available - Pulis, Karanka, Dyche, Guidolin for example. I don't need to be punting around with Conte, Moyes, Puel, Guardiola, Koeman & the likes. Their defenders can wait till I have some evidence of value. 🙂

Ah yeah, well I didn't have the best of seasons last year, so unfortunately I didn't cash. But everything seemed above board and the person running the league has been doing so for a while. Think it's reliable. I haven't got my act together this year yet, haven't found any leagues to enter apart from my own league, but going to start looking soon, hopefully they're not full already.

I don't know, maybe can make a rule that team name/manager name has to be same as in FFS or something.

3-5-2 this year...? Anyone? Bueller? Anyone?

    Knocked up something like this...

    Deulofeu -- Eriksen -- Townsend -- Firmino -- Ayew

    Kun Ibra

Two stron captain choices, one always at home. Thoughts..?

There are enough good 6.5 strikers to justify getting one in.

I've also got Aguero and Ibra and managed to get in KdB, Firmino and Ayew as well as a 6.5 striker.

No, a 5.5 and a 4.5 to go alongside them.

          Then a 5.5, 5.0, 4.5, 4.5, 4.5 in defence.

I can always downgrade KdB to Eriksen and get in Cesc for my 5.5, too.

Aguerovich teams don't have to be bad elsewhere.

Fair enough, similar to what I got at the time Trigg.
honestly, for the sake of 0.5 I'd have that extra GK,
that def is too weak for me.
And you've only 3 Mids, Id prefer 4, the Kdb > 7.5 in your scenario is a must for me, I think your trying to do too much and the team is compressed as such and not enough quality (balance) for me.
I see the appeal but for me - No, wish you well with it Trigg.

Its my favourite draft so far.

Gives me flexibility to jump on a premium mid or a mid price one if they start firing.

Thing is a can easily downgrade a MF to get a 6.5m forward that shines early on, I just like all the 6-5-7.5 MF options this year, so much value to be had.

Fixture tickers are a bit tougher than I thought....

On a 5 point scale where 5 is best and 1 is worst where do you put away games such as Watford, Burnley and Hull for Arsenal?

Saw someone post about strikers being pretty pricey this year and I tend to agree. I think 3-5-2 might be the way forward this season.

Do we think Borini will get regular game time at Sunderland? Would be bench fodder mainly anyway.

    Would leave me with;

    Foster - Jaku
    Shaw - Stones - Souare - Taylor - Pieters
    Mkhi - Eriksen - Firmino - Willian - Townsend
    Aguero - Lukaku - Borini

Question mark over Willian still, Siggy, Ayew Tadic a better pick? Or even a Stoke forward player if they pick up Allen. Concerned about having zero Chelsea otherwise.

with striker prices elevated, anyone think of going 3-5-2 and loading up in midfield?

Yep but hard to pick that 3rd striker. Just going with grabben/campbell as cheap bench fodder.

3-4-3 and always 3-4-3. Three forwards score more than 5 milfs.

        This year..? Pretty prophetic statement.

Look at all the quality at 6-5-8.5m in MF and I'd question that.

Plus you can easily revert to 3-4-3 if need be.

Depends who the 3rd is surely?

Close between the 6-7m strikers and 6-7m 5th mids.

I went part of last season with 3-5-2 when Alli, Mahrez, Payet etc were on form

Totally agree. All about potential firepower mate.

Happy to be back in the swing of it all with my first post of the season. Might as well share my first draft.

    Foster Heaton
Shaw Funes Mori Friend Taylor Soaure
    Hazard Siggy Townsend Tadic Kirchhoff
    Ibra Kun Negredo

Let me know what you think.

    Cheers

Likeable. Is Ibra and Kun too much though? Could you cover Ibra with Miki esp for the first few weeks as they settle into the PL?

Suspect the milfield is a little undercooked.

      5/10.

Unproven in the PL. I'm not really convinced at this stage.

I feel Ibra and Kun isn't too much. I think its pretty perfect. 2 strong captain choices of which one will be at home every week.

        Ibra to whom though?
