Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Anthony Martial

While Anthony Martial may have arrived at Old Trafford last September as something of an unknown quantity, the exorbitant amount it took to sign him from Monaco meant much was expected from the-then 19-year-old attacker.

The Frenchman ended the campaign with a reasonable return of 11 goals and six assists from 31 Premier League appearances, playing predominantly on the left wing, with his personal highlights including a goal on his debut against Liverpool, while he also scored a last minute winner in the 2-1 win over Everton in the FA Cup semi-final.

A fifth place finish in the Premier League saw Louis van Gaal replaced by Jose Mourinho as Man United manager, and with the Portuguese boss able to bring in the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan this summer, it’s expected that United will considerably improve on the meagre 49 goals they managed last term.

Having had a year to find his feet in England, Martial looks poised to better his attacking output from last season this time around, and reclassified as a midfielder in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season, is likely to prove a popular option for Fantasy managers.

  • The Van Gaal era at Old Trafford saw United regress significantly as an attacking force, so the arrival of Mourinho should see some improvement on that front. While the Portuguese manager’s sides haven’t always been the most attack-minded, Chelsea did score 73 goals in their 2014/15 title winning campaign, more than any side managed last term. Expectations for the likes of Martial should certainly be higher this time around then.
  • With Mkhitaryan’s creativity and Ibrahimovic’s ability to bring his team-mates into play, United’s forward line should be much improved this season. Martial only managed a goal attempt every 48.6 minutes last time out, but with the new boys providing 15 and 13 league assists for Dortmund and PSG respectively, the Frenchman’s ability to run in behind opposition backlines could come to fruition more often.
  • Martial impressively produced 213 penalty box touches last season, just two less than Tottenham’s Harry Kane despite playing seven less matches and being mainly stationed on the left flank. A goal conversion rate of 19.3% compared favourably to the likes of Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud (15.8%), Kane (15.7%) and Everton’s Romelu Lukaku (15.3%), so if he United can create him more opportunities, Martial’s clinical nature in front of goal should see an improvement on last year’s 11 strikes.
  • Martial was a major beneficiary of the Bonus Point System (BPS) last season, accruing 21 in total, a number that would have ranked him sixth among midfielders. Only Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha (274) and Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez (255) managed more dribbles than Martial’s 207 last season among midfielders and forwards, which is one area the former Monaco attacker should continue to shine in. His reclassification as a midfielder will also see him earn an extra point for each goal scored and clean sheet registered, so after United claimed 18 shut-outs last term, there is clearly plenty of scope for Martial to better his 141 points in FPL from last season.
  • The 20-year-old currently sits in just 7.5% of FPL 15-man squads, whereas fellow United midfielder Mkhitaryan has an ownership of 19.1%, with Ibrahimovic leading the way among Mourinho’s side with 31.8% ownership. The France international is shaping up to be a differential heading into Gameweek 1, then, and considering his place in the starting XI looks pretty secure, with the likes of Memphis Depay and Jesse Lingard offering back-up, he certainly appears an overlooked option at this point in time.
  • Given United’s generally favourable start (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) to the new campaign, many Fantasy managers will be trying to find a spot for at least one of their attackers. With Martial and Mkhitaryan (both 9.5) offering a 2.0 saving from the Swede, the pair may offer the superior value, particularly if Rooney maintains spot-kick duties ahead of the former PSG striker. With Mkhitaryan still an unknown quantity when it comes to English football, despite his impressive attacking statistics whilst playing for Dortmund, Martial could be the one to favour from the off.

oooooo its really depends on positions man, if dele alli plays at CAM then eriksen will be shifted out wide like last season.

martial probably wont play up front due to ibra and rashford so we're in the same position we were in last year.

if both play in their natural positions then i would be all for it but i didnt have them last season for the same reason why i wont have them in my team this season.

      OUT OF POSITION!

Thing is I'm leaning towards Martial for his explosiveness and playing off Rooney, Ibra and Mik, not to mention Pog. I don't think Rashford will start but Eriksen on set pieces is tempting???

Martial as a midfielder would have been worth about an extra 25 points, depending on baps reallocation. Around fifth highest points per match in that case.

Fair enough, just think a year managed by LVG in which his potential appeared unrealized still got him a truckload of points.

Could be a super premium midfielder this year, 5.5-6.0 PPG.

Really stupid question here, so forgive my ignorance.

If I was choosing a 4.0 defender, say I chose Paredes for example at 17.3 ownership, if he doesn't play and people started dumping him he loses value correct? Whereas if I choose Bruce for Hull at 0.2 ownership, because he doesn't the same quantity of owners getting rid of him does he still lose value or does he stay at 4.0?

Sorry if that's poorly worded, I couldn't work out how to express it.

Rate this heavy hitters team (not mine). Kane, Aguero, Sanchez, Mahrez, Hazard all conceivably 175pts+ a season players

    Heaton - Foster
Pieters - Evans - Taylor - Souare (Paredes)
Sanchez - Mahrez - Hazard - Gradel (Fletcher)
    Kane - Aguero (Diomande)

That D is as rotation as it gets - Wouldn't want to be starting 4 of them each week. Obviously the big hitters are good - Aguero and Sanchez being a touch injury prone could derail this plan though.

Firmino's fixtures are bad, change to Lamela/Eriksen/Alli

Parades is not nailed on at all, so a price drop can be expected..

In fact, since both are of Senegalese origin, it should be pronounced similarly to Mané, despite Germans pronouncing it differently, about like "sunny" with an extended "e" in the end.

However, English commentators pronounce Mané "Mun-ay" or "Mun-nay" or so, which is wrong.

        1. Polaris - The Mortal Coil

          Well, it's pronounced "Zan-ay".

And the commentators over here don't pronounce Mané like that at all. They say "Marn-ay".

Neither should be pronounced with that "ay" in the end, it's typical English mispronunciation of the names ending with "é" (the German mispronunciation is to say it as "ee"). There's no "ay", it's rather like "eh", but it's hard for me at least to find an English syllable matching it. Listen to the man himself say it:

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvcIW9P7uf8

And here his father interviewed in Senegal:

I guess everyone is wrong then apart from you. I'm sure I speak for most when I say I've never heard Mané pronounced like "Mun-nay" or "Mun-eh". Always "Marn-ay".

Whether in England or Germany or anywhere else, I've only heard Sané pronounced "Sarn-ay" which is wrong, or "Zan-ay" in Germany....

We're all wrong. Camp is boss.

No need to get defensive like that. Write pathetic to cover behind such "everybody is wrong then apart from you".

I'm pretty sure when you write "Marn-ay" it's same as when I write "Mun-nay". I don't know how you pronounce Marn.

You should hear it in the examples I gave how that name is pronounced. The end should be pronounced the same way with Mané and Sané. And listen to any French or French African broadcast, and you hear it pronounced like that.

Moreover, it's plain clear that English and German commentators and journalists don't pronounce Sané same way.

                Germans:

Out of interest, how does your highness pronounce the following then? Some random names:

              Dembélé, Onguéné, Dja Djédjé ....

Because whether in English commentary, or Ligue 1 commentators, or in French - I've only heard them pronounced one way - with "ay" 🙂

Aha. That would explain the mispronunciation. Maybe English just don't hear the difference between é and ay. The difference is very clear, though, and if you ever watch French comedy about English people speaking French, that's one thing they laugh at. "Parl-ay, vooh franz-ay" way the English speak. It's the same mistake. Dembelé here:

                https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ORI9HQD5HY

No "ay". Same with all others. Djédjé is not pronounced "Jay-Jay".

He doesn't. Apparently you just don't hear the difference. At least if you say "ay" as in "say", "way", "hay", "day" or any other one syllable English word with ay.

And still,l funny enough, you don't seem to hear the difference to the German pronunciation, which is clearly different.

                      "Zan-ay/ey" innit.

Leroy Sané must be pronouncing his own name wrong then.

No he doesn't. See the post below. You apparently don't hear the difference between how a Sané is said by a French speaker, and how it is said by the English commentators, but this link should demonstrate the difference to you:

You see, "ay" ends with an phonetic alphabet "i", but "é" doesn't have that, its phonetic transcription is plain "e" (not pronounced like english e, which would again be "i").

Tore is injured as is Lanzini and Antonio at the moment is being stationed at right back. That leaves Feghouli and Payet as our attacking midfielders so pretty confident he will start.

Real catch 22 with Zlatan isn't it. Having both him and Aguero really wrecks your team balance, but with that ownership of he starts with a bang those who go without could be floundering. That being said I'm currently going without

First of all you have to understand the mentality of the majority here and how they play the game.. the key with Zlatan is his ownership which sits at over 30% as of now.. the price doesn't even register with them they are scared to not have him and if that means having less cash elsewhere then that's fine because everyone else is in the same boat.. he could be 13m and it wouldn't change a thing

Maybe I'm confused. I thought you were saying people owned Ibra around here because of his high ownership (in FPL - 30%~). But Payet is virtually the same. Ozil is in top 3 owned mids too and barely seeing him in any teams.

    3-5-2, haven't seen a better (Kubra,Haz,Mahrez,Firmino) team 😉

    Foster/Jaku
    Morgan/McAuley/Friend/Pieters/Lenihan
    Hazard/Mahrez/Firmino/Deulofeu/Ibe
    Aguero/Ibrahimovic/Diamonde

4.5 striker as I don't want money on the bench..

    Thoughts?

Change Ibe to 4.5 and spend the extra million on shoring up the defence. Then be certain that you don't want to use any subs.

I preferred your Alex Bruce plan - Lenihan I believe is far more likely to drop to 3.9 quicker.
