Moving Target

Moving Target – Ashley Williams

Everton continued to step up their summer recruitment drive with the signing of Swansea defender Ashley Williams for an undisclosed fee, believed to be £11 million.

The 31-year-old put pen to paper on a three-year contract with the Toffees, and speaking about his latest signing, new Everton manager Ronald Koeman explained why he was so keen to bring the Welsh skipper to Goodison Park:

“We wanted to bring in a strong player in the central defence position, a player who knows the Premier League and Ashley fits the bill for us very well. He is an experienced defender and the kind of player we need in the team. He is a leader. He showed this at Swansea and he has shown it for his country and he is looking forward to his new challenge here at Everton.”

The History

Williams began his youth career at West Brom, but was released by the Baggies at the age of 16. He then spent two seasons at non-league side Hednesford Town, before joining Stockport County in 2003.

He lasted five years with the Hatters, making 165 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and registering two assists, while he was also handed the captain’s armband at Edgeley Park.

In March 2008, then Swansea manager Roberto Martinez swooped to sign Williams for a then club-record transfer fee of a reported £400,000, and the centre-back immediately established himself as a key player at the Liberty Stadium, helping the club rise from League One to the Premier League by 2011.

Over the past five seasons, Williams, who took over the Swansea captaincy from Garry Monk, has been one of the most consistent centre-backs in the Premier League, and helped lead the club to two top 10 finishes, as well as a Capital One Cup success in 2012/13.

Williams, born in Wolverhampton, qualified to play for Wales due to his Welsh grandfather, and made his international debut in a 2-0 win against Luxembourg in March 2008. He led his country to qualification for this summer’s European Championship in France, and the team exceeded all expectations to reach the semi-finals, only to lose 2-0 to Portugal. Williams has currently made 66 appearances for Wales, scoring two goals.

The Prospects

As alluded to by Koeman’s comments, the former Swansea defender has been brought in to provide some leadership to a defence that conceded 55 goals last season, with only five teams having a worse record.

Koeman trialled a three-man defence during pre-season, a system he utilised whilst at Southampton, and also opted for the same set-up at home to Spurs on Saturday afternoon.

At this point, though, it remains to be seen whether the Toffees’ boss will only use this against the stronger teams in the Premier League and revert to a four-man defence thereafter.

Following John Stones’ departure to Man City, Williams looks set to be the first-choice selection at centre-back at Goodison Park, with Phil Jagielka, who Koeman revealed will not be leaving this summer despite interest from Sunderland, likely to be battling it out with Ramiro Funes Mori to start alongside the Wales international.

The Toffees have also been heavily linked with Sunderland defender Lamine Kone though, and should they sign the Ivorian, the chances of using a three-man backline would certainly increase.

Analysing the underlying statistics of Williams, Jagielka and Funes Mori in terms of their goal threat last season, the Argentine held a clear advantage, averaging a goal attempt every 97.1 minutes, significantly superior to both Williams (214) and Jagielka (216.8).

Nonetheless, Williams’ all-action type of defending, with a desire to put his body on the line every times he steps foot onto the pitch, has seen him put up strong numbers for clearances, blocks and interceptions (CBI) over the past few seasons.

Only Leicester’s Christian Fuchs (with 25) garnered more bonus points than Williams (24) in the last campaign, with the centre-back regularly benefitting when his side managed to keep a clean sheet.

In addition, Williams has missed just nine Premier League matches over the past five seasons, so his durability offers another string to his bow.

Williams, Jagielka and Funes Mori are all priced at 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and whilst the new boys’ CBI boosts his appeal, it’s worth noting that Funes Mori scored four goals last term from just 24 starts and is one to monitor if he nails down a regular role.

The new recruit was handed an extended break following his Euro 2016 exertions, and with 10 days’ training alongside his new team-mates, should now be ready to take on West Brom next weekend.

He edges into the picture just as Everton embark on a very favourable upcoming run (wba, STO, sun, MID, bou, CPL, mci, bur), with only the trip to Man City in Gameweek 8 providing a stern test of he Toffees defence; clean sheets around that encounter look likely.

Ultimately, Koeman’s chosen formation will depend how we assess this new Everton rearguard.

Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman (when fit) will be the favoured options if stationed as wing-backs. Both are more expensive at 5.5 apiece in FPL, though with Coleman injured, Baines is set to emerge as a candidate to consider over the medium-term, particularly bearing in mind Koeman oversaw a Southampton side that kept an impressive 27 clean sheets over the past two seasons.

I'd keep Gradel, looked good when he came on yesterday, GW1 has come and gone, he could be a good option for GW2.

Ramirez is a good option too don't get me wrong, just not sure if it warrants a transfer yet.

    6 point ramble.

    - Its tooo calm. Everything is too settled. Everyone is all smiles and happy. Something is going to go down tonight that will make everyone scramble. A Costa hattie maybe. or a Payet brace.

    - Zlatan Ibrahimovich. He's rolls royce. Everything he does leads to a lethal attack. GET HIM.

    - Ashley Williams. Went with him in my initial team. Think he'll start this weekend? Should i play him?

    - What do i do with Shane Long?

    - Kane captainers. Word of caution. Janssen looked deadly and changed the game GW1. Could start with Kane and Kane dropped deep once Jannsen came. Monitor what Poch says. I'd be vary of captaining him.

    - Zlatan makes me wet.

Nah not considering Negredo myself. 1 attempt all game and that was a header from a yard out (thanks to Gaston!). Still could be a solid choice but not for me.

Andy C is one to monitor, yup. I'm considering Callum Wilson also.

It's very calm indeed. Payet could hurt us all. I'm hoping the auld Carroll knock downs to Ayew works out.

Agreed on Zlatan. He is King.

No idea re Williams but I suppose play him anyway, he'll hardly get a cameo would he?

Keep Long until you're 100% sure on another option. Rondon interests me greatly, also Diomande could enable a nice 352.

      Jannsen > Kane.

          58 with Hazard to go.

Started with Vardy, thinking I need to get Zlatan in wouldn't be crazy about spending 4pts.

Although I'm considering Rooney & Costa as alternatives also.

But Zlatan is captaincy option, think I need him.

Seems a 1 week Knee Jerk IMO. Gray had 4 chances in the box. Rondon has failed in the past and because he scores a goal you want to swap so early. It can only be chasing price rise/falls?

Jumping in on this one but is Rondon that bad a shout? 6 chances and 3 chances created. 3 home fixtures in his next 4. He's hardly been a failure in his time in the prem too, albeit he's never been a fantasy option.

            1. Eze Really?

              7 years, 8 months ago

All is subjective for sure but against Everton with 3 big centre backs playing will limit any 1 up front attack especially W Brom. Wait a week and don't worry too much about the price rise. 2 tfrs week 3 will cover an inevitable injury.

The more I think of it I find all I forgot about the beginning of the each season reveals its ugly head again.
What is the price rise criteria to base possible transfers.
Not having too many subs that play each week resulting in bench points that pxss me off. (Especially mids/forwards)
Struggling on Captaincy decisions because I have the likes of Ibra and Kun.
Wasting tfr's based on 1 GW.
Tempted by using a single tfr rather than a double.
Each year we talk about the same stuff so I am obviously not the only one.

What do we think Klopp will do with Sturridge back? Does he drop Firmino?

I think Firmino is much better suited to Klopps style and has developed great chemistry with Coutinho and Lallana, but Sturridge is better finisher (but also more selfish which doesn't fit very well with their fluidity).

People getting in Coutinho what's the reasoning? He does this every year and then flatters to deceive for a while. Do you feel this is his year to kick on and be consistent as to be fair, injury has hampered him in recent seasons and could be linked to his drops in form

I think he will have his best season too if he stays fit but I can't see him outscoring Firmino or Mane which is why I'm so surprised lots of people are rushing to get him in. Keep the transfer Firmino > Coutinho/Lallana?
            Or anything else

Jakupovic (prefer him to Cech atm)
            Terry, Stones, Shaw
            Townsend, Firmino, Mahrez, Ramirez
            Ibra (C), Aguero, Gray

I got Firmino too, and imo he was unlucky not to be among the goals yesterday. Keep him, sideways and unuseful to get in La/Cou. He will deliver, especially deployed in the middel/up front.

Am I wrong in remembering that a couple of seasons ago price changes didn't occur until week 2 or week 3? People are talking about price rises happening straight away, so either I'm remembering it wrong or the website has changed it's way of doing things.

There was an absolute glut of changes in post gw3 going into gw4.

But I think also before gw2 there were changes.

Desperate to get coutinho in, so annoyed with myself as wanted him from the start but didn't.

Currently top of mini league only just like and thinking of taking early hit of -4 in order to get him before price increase.

Current team that played this weekend:

            Jaku/Foster
Friend / Valencia / Stones (Kone / Amat)
            Deulofeu / Hazard / Redmond / Townsend / (Capoue)
            Aguero / Ibra / Vardy

            Vardy > Negredo
            Towsend > Coutinho

I don't like taking a hit at all but I really want coutinho for Burnley and it seems Negredo V sunderland could also be good so may as well do it while the point difference doesnt really effect much?

            Ok plan or daft?

PS. Capoue & amat on bench made me sick but at least I have them I suppose, would never have played him.

Daft and massive knee jerk based on one game. Stick for now.

Vardy is playing Arsenal and their defence is a joke.

I think people need to remember a few things about Coutinhos goals:
1 brilliant free kick, he MIGHT score 1 more like that this year
For his second he got across the front of Chambers. He won't play many more naive defenders this year.
They were awful in the first half

Indeed. Totally agree. The two pieces of information that I'm taking from that game are that if we assume that Arsenal were playing with a second choice attack and may be even third choice defence then:

              a) Arsenal's second choice attack still put three goals past Liverpool's first choice defence, and
              b) How many third choice defences are Liverpool facing over the next five?

Can’t believe how many knee jerks are going on!! Patience people, we’ve only seen one game and there is still one to go tonight!

Especially people getting rid of Kane/Vardy that will probably bite you on the bum. Also Alli/Eriksen just before a plum tie v Palace!

People swapping Gray out for Negredo! Based on what? One scored and one didn't.

Why not give them all one more week unless there is a genuine reason to get rid eg sent off or injured?

True (and I have Negredo anyway) but chances are if you transfer Gray out he will then go and score? Usually what happens.

              The usual.

Runs down wing / Cuts inside / Shoots / Blocked / Repeat

I have him in my team though and will keep for a bit, especially as he will enjoy scoring against Spurs.

Remember - Last season the first price changes occurred at 7:50am not at 2:20am! - so basically they can occur any time!!!#fpl

Not brilliant, but there are 2.4m players with less points than you.

It could be worse and probably fairly average for the serious FPL players.

Should I do Firmino to Coutinho? Coutinho looked a bit better and more exciting than Firmino and is most likely getting a price rise.

Serious question, how are Arsenal fans feeling this morning?

I'm not an Arsenal fan, or even a fan of any premier league team, so no bias involved, but even I'm at a loss to explain why they haven't moved for defensive reinforcements, or even another attacking option.

Seriously, just go out and get Jonny Evans and Benteke....£50m done.

Also when you are defensively vulnerable why aren't you starting your new £35m defensive midfielder?

            You guys must be livid?!

Gabriels injured? Merte is injured? Cool heres £15m for Williams. We need a striker lets at least bid for one.

I really don't think so, Evans has good PL experience, he's a good age for a defender, and would surely be available for a semi-reasonable price.

Benteke, same again, good age, experience, perhaps slightly similar to Giroud, but a player who is obviously available for transfer.

Liverpool walked through that defense yesterday, it was embarrassing for the young centre backs

Have been a staunch defender of his.

Not fussed with the result, but not starting Santi and Xhaka for this match, he just lost one fan of his.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Starting Ramsey over Santi is understandable . Felt we'd benefit with Ramsey with his runs into the box but what you expect to happen and what happens isn't always the same.

Made sense to opt for Coquelin-Elneny too. Give that suspectible defense the much needed protection. Might as well play the two who are familiar with each other than playing Xhakha in front of an unfamiliar CB pairing .

Holding shouldn't have been playing. But that's the situation Wenger has bought upon himself

It's not just hindsight though, everyone could see what the team was missing, even one month ago when Mertesacker got injured alarm bells should be ringing.

Xhaka has surely been purchased for big money because he's clearly a better player than either Coquelin, or Elneny.

Holding was hung out to dry, really unfair on him.

Same, I don't like the 'sack the manager because we didn't win the league' culture, but some of the decision making is hard to believe from an elite level manager.

So defensively vulnerable, just risk Koscielny, he's not actually injured is he? Give him an extended rest when you've got players back, or an easier game, I felt bad for the two young defenders who were just getting cut open time and again, and then boo'ed.
