Moving Target

Moving Target – Yannick Bolasie

Following the additions of Idrissa Gueye and Ashley Williams over the past few weeks, Everton continued to strengthen their squad with the signing of Crystal Palace winger Yannick Bolasie earlier this week for an undisclosed fee, believed to be worth £25 million.

The 27-year-old has penned a five-year contract with the Toffees, and speaking about his latest new face, Everton manager Ronald Koeman outlined some of the qualities the DR Congo international will bring to his side:

“Yannick is a player who has been a long time on my radar because he’s the type of winger I like – fast, strong and he can play different positions in the forward line. He’s a really good signing for the club. At 27, he’s a good age and he has experience in the Premier League. He will give strength to the team and I’m very pleased to have Yannick as part of what we are trying to build here at Everton.”

The History

Bolasie endured a nomadic start to his footballing career – having started out at Rushden & Diamonds as a 16-year-old, he had spells at non-league side Hillingdon Borough and Maltese outfit Floriana.

He returned to England in 2008, although over the next few seasons Bolasie would take in stops at Plymouth Argyle, Dagenham & Redbridge, Barnet and back at Rushden & Diamonds, before joining Bristol City in June 2011.

While Bolasie only scored one goal in 23 appearances for the Robins in 2011/12, his performances saw him named the club’s Young Player Of The Year. Having failed to settle in the south-west, he handed in a transfer request, and completed a move to Crystal Palace in August 2012.

The 27-year-old enjoyed a successful first season with the Eagles, scoring three goals and registering eight assists in 45 matches as they secured promotion back to the Premier League.

Over the past three years, Bolasie has stood out as one of Palace’s main attackers, with his pace and dribbling ability a constant menace to opposition defences. In 90 Premier League appearances, he has scored nine goals and added 19 assists.

While Bolasie was eligible to play for France, England and DR Congo at international level, he chose to represent the latter, making his debut against Libya in March 2013. He currently has 27 caps to his name, and has totalled seven goals and two assists for his country.

The Prospects

Given the significant outlay made by Everton on Bolasie, it’s expected that he’ll warrant a regular starting berth once he’s fully acclimatised on Merseyside.

As already referenced, Koeman hinted at Bolasie’s versatility, which, given the Dutchman’s liking for experimenting with different formations, should prove invaluable.

Koeman opted for a 3-4-2-1 system for the Toffees’ opening day clash against Tottenham, with Ross Barkley and Kevin Mirallas in central attacking midfield positions behind Gerard Deulofeu in the “false nine” role.

With Barkley likely to be a regular starter, Bolasie appears most likely to take Mirallas’ position in that formation, with Romelu Lukaku taking Deulofeu’s spot in attack once he returns from a heel injury. That’s providing he stays at the club beyond the transfer window, of course.

Alternatively, in a 4-2-3-1 system, Bolasie could play out wide, with either Deulofeu or Mirallas on the opposite flank, leaving Barkley in the number ten role behind Lukaku.

Comparing the underlying statistics from Bolasie, Barkley, Deulofeu and Mirallas last season, it was the Belgian who led the way for minutes per chance with 26.6, ahead of Barkley (33.8), Bolasie (38.4) and Deulofeu (162.3).

In terms of creativity, the Spaniard shone the brightest, though, creating a chance every 41.7 minutes, marginally better than Barkley (57.3) and Mirallas (60.7), with Bolasie surprisingly only managing to create a chance every 95.2 minutes.

Bolasie’s statistics from last season weren’t particularly impressive then, but the DR Congo international was part of a Palace side that did struggle during the second half of the campaign.

The major attraction of Bolasie from a Fantasy perspective is his price tag, coming in at just 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), compared to 6.5 for both Deulofeu and Mirallas, while Barkley is valued at 7.5.

Currently owned by 4.9% of FPL bosses, Bolasie is likely to be closely monitored over the next few matches, with his favourable valuation making him an intriguing option.

With so many bit hitters such as Sergio Aguero, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Eden Hazard performing during the opening Gameweek, the need for enablers in both the mid-price and budget brackets is likely to increase over the coming weeks.

There’s no doubt that Bolasie has the potential to frustrate but, if he can find an end product, we could have a player who emerges from the pack to become a very popular option as a third or fourth midfielder.

Furthermore, he also faces a very favourable run of fixtures as he settles in at Merseyside, with Everton set to face just one of last year’s top eight (wba, STO, sun, MID, bou, CPL, mci, bur) in the next eight Gameweeks.

Good article on one of my fave players.

I'm always amazed how dismissive folk are on sites like this of his obvious talents, i put it down to the fantasy football effect.
Plainly he's a rubbish pick for this game because he's probably got the worst shot in the prem and has been trying to feed some dodgy strikers who are only little better. Nonetheless his talents as a footballer are obvious....just like Navas he occupies a lot of opposition time just trying to keep up with him.
I was amazed to see the comments on twitter about the waste of money he is whilst at the same time every manager, fellow players and pundits have been singing his praises...well those that were asked anyway.

    Like is said...."fantasy football effect?".....

I'm not sure he even knows what he's doing when he's 1v1 against a defender - which makes it even harder for the defender of course!

It's possible. Pied looked very accomplished when he came on. I don't know if Puel might give Cedric a bit longer though, given that Pied's a relatively new signing.

Didn't see it live but from the extended highlights and millions of blog articles I've read, it's a very fluid system. Redmond saw the most goal action, including a disallowed goal and a few that went just wide. I'll report back after Friday and after Sunderland (trekking south to St M's for that one).

Instant results when you change tactic so radically is completely unrealistic. And some of them are deluding themselves that we should expect to finish in the top 6 again. Ridiculous.

Yeah but that's the problem I'm talking about....we only see the goals (pts) in players sometimes and end up forming an opinion of them based on that.

I bet if you were to ask and defenders in the prem...particularly full backs....which players in the whole league they dread playing against then Bolasie would be in the top five of all of them...and Navas (another rubbish pick for FPL)....

Mane is a nightmare - I live with a Saints fan and he used to tear his hair out watching him.

Coutinho is quite random although scores points in batches.

For long term I feel Firmino will score the most points. He plays well advanced and he's full of talent. Not shy of a shot either.

If Ibra rises I can't get him in next GW without surgery (saving 2m elsewhere, either ruining balance or taking a hit).

Right now I could do Vardy, Tadic > Ibra, Redmond/Bolasie for -4. It's not worth the hit right?

I'm inclined to keep. Hits never seems worthwhile to me because it's so hard to predict what happens early on. On another day Vardy would have 2 goals, and Tadic looked superb and has stats to back it up. I fancy Vardy vs. Arsenal defence in it's current state, and VVD/Fonte have the physicality to deal with Ibra, he was very quiet until his goal.

Many are selling Vardy. I think he will get many many chances v Gooners and if he can finish there will be an almighty "change of strategy".

Yeah it's a hard one. Tadic was excellent, I just fear Ibra's high ownership, even though he was non-existent bar his goal. And don't want to be hurt by the possible price rise/fall of them both.

              Kun, Gray, Vardy,

Mostly disappointed in Feghouli - he rotates so well with Redmond, he looked like a good option. He didn't make the bench for West Ham though and that concerned me a lot.
Leicester's defeat against Hull made me doubt Morgan.
The anticipated price drops for both Morgan and Vardy, combined with the doubts over Feghoulis's starting potential made me panic, and I'd sooner wildcard than take a couple of hits to get rid of them.

              Team looks like this now:
              Courtois, Jakupovic,
              Friend, Stones, Valencia, Amat, McCauly,
Hazard, Lamela, Coutinho, Redmond, Gray (Leicester)
              Kun, Ibra, Negredo

I would love to find a way of getting Firmino back in for Coutinho.. despite Coutinho's great performance at the weekend, I still think Firmino is the one I want going forward, but the spare 0.5 has allowed me to get Hazard.
Where can I trim cash? I don't want a 4.5 midfielder and I don't want budget goalkeepers. Seems defence is the only option.

I scored 47, with 22 on the bench. I'm not too disappointed with my picks, they still have merit in long term to me:
Foster, Heaton; Shaw, Morgan, Stones, Friend, Amat; Hazard, Firmino, Tadic, Townsend, D.Gray; Kun, Vardy, A.Gray.
Morgan and Townsend are picks i'm mosy disappointed in.

How about saving a transfer, suffering for one week and then you will have 2 free transfers, can take a couple of hits and save your wildcard? Mini wildcard tactic is best. Things will be a lot clearer after gwk2, too early yet, be patient imo.

It was huge knee jerk but i WC after GW1 last year and it worked well for me last year so done the same this, after better than average 59pt returns I've gone for

      Foster (jake)

      Clyne Walker Valencia Amat (kingsley)

      Hazard Pogba Couthino (Capoue Fletch)

      Defoe Ibra Kun

WC still active, Pogba, bad idea? I think he will start and might be deadly, UTD looking good. Clyne has not been tipped much but he should assist well this season and Defoe, his form is good, their main man and loves a derby Another def in for Kings? only 4mil to play pretty much. Kept my .2 price increase.

      Any thought appreciated.

Its just way too calm for early season. I might say i don't even like this sub 200k rank early season.

Much better as an FPL player chasing rather than defending a lead. Anyone else feel the same way? Chasing brings out the best in me.

Firminio a good capt choice this week? I'm one of the idiots who gambled against having Aguero or Ibra. Well I mean ibra got a bs long shot to pay off apart from that he did nothing and aguero finished a pen that wasn't deserved as well as doing nothing else while my capt Vardy who could have scored the most goals in gw1 didn't have his shooting boots on.

Still have Vardy and costa but I feel like Firmino could score well.

          The $million question.
Ronald can play with 3 at the back and wing backs which threatens his place. If 4 at the back the he can get a wide berth. Having said that his physicality can get him subbed a lot.

would you take a hit to get rid of him or play 4 - 3 - 3 with Amat, Kone, Stones, Valencia.

        0,5 in bank

Thinking I should line up 3-4-3 this gw and get rid of Bojan, but for whom? Is Snodgrass the best call, you think? Don't wanna double up on SOU in midfield, not convinced by Deulofeu, and Shaquiri seems like a sideways move.

I have Vardy, but I've just been thinking about something I noticed last season, which I previously ignored due to his price.

Vardy is not explosive. Half of his goals came during that scoring streak where he only got like 1 brace. The rest were mostly single goals I believe, along with some assists here and there. I like that consistency from my players, but with CL football, I just don't think he can pull off things like that again. With Musa in the mix too now, I think he's no longer the only source of goals in that side (along side mahrez). And at 10m I think I'd really want more explosiveness from a player, and someone who id feel confident captaining on occasion. If someone like hazard is worth 10m then I just don't think vardy is. And no pens too now.

Kante must be a really bad player, he only scored one goal last season...

what do I do with Bradley Smith (Bournemouth defender)
Only 4m but didn't play last week. Transfer out now or just let him rot on my bench and hope he get some game time soon?

Depending on how often you'll play him you can get Amat or just let him rot on your bench

In a draft league and thinking of nabbing Costa for Vardy. Already own Hazard.

        Yay / nay?

Oh draft league, that changes things maybe. Anyway I fancy Costa to score more goals than Vardy.

Costa could quite easily have been sent off last game to so you gotta factor his love of a miss timed tackle

I'd like to see where and how he's going to play first but I think £8.5m isn't as bad as initially thought

            Definitely.

If I WC I may put him in just for the diff on here.

Really hard to see how he could be better than the likes of Martial though....

Not writing him off but would need to monitor before buying.

Would be nice to see his fitness levels, but I agree. I also think folks are understating the impact he'll have on other United assets.

Pretty much the reason we were so slow to get Ramsey and Yaya a few years ago.

Is it a crazy idea to double up on Liverpool midfield?

Thinking of doing mahrez -> Mane

        Already have Firmino.

Someone talk some sense into me please

Same as Tadic Redmond! A lot of bucks tied up for a double up though. Done it twice with Siva and Ya Ya and Oxil and Caz
