Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 2 – The Weak

After breaking down those sides with the most favourable fixtures over the next six Gameweeks yesterday, our focus now shifts to those teams who could find the going tough over the coming period.

Southampton

(mun, SUN, ars, SWA, whm, lei)

Saints got off to an unconvincing start against Watford under new boss Claude Puel and could struggle over the next month or so, with four testing away trips at Man United, Arsenal, West Ham and Leicester.

Having failed to keep out the Hornets, Southampton will come up against the two clubs that created the most big chances (four) among all 20 teams on the opening weekend – United and Leicester. Arsenal will be able to call upon Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud for the Gameweek 4 clash, while although West Ham only managed four shots inside the box against Chelsea, the second lowest total last weekend, they should be far more dangerous on home soil, with Dimitri Payet back in the starting XI.

It’s hard to be hopeful of any clean sheets in those matches, then, although in the short-term, the home clashes against Sunderland and Swansea are pretty favourable, and may persuade some to stick with the likes of Virgil van Dijk for a little while longer.

From an attacking point of view, Leicester and United may again provide the toughest opposition, given they were among seven clubs who didn’t allow any big chances against them in Gameweek 1. Arsenal’s backline should also boast a fully fit Laurent Koscielny by the time the two teams meet, so while Nathan Redmond, Dusan Tadic and Shane Long should be able to tick over with those two kind home fixtures, the pair may deliver their fair share of two-pointers, too.

Swansea

(HUL, lei, CHE, sot, MCI, LIV)

The Welsh side got off to a solid start, beating Burnley 1-0, but have a horrid run of fixtures following Saturday’s favourable home fixture against Hull.

They do face a further three home matches over the next six Gameweeks, but the quality of opposition – Chelsea, Man City and Liverpool – visiting the Liberty Stadium could hardly be stronger. All three got off to winning starts, and while the Swans may fancy their chances of scoring in front of their own fans, the potential for goals looks to be very limited. Fernando Llorente and Borja Baston could share playing time up front, further lessening their appeal.

Keeping things tight at the opposite end will also be a huge task, with all six of their next opponents ranked in the top eight for total goal attempts on the opening weekend. The match against Hull appears the main hope in terms of adding to their opening day shut-out.

Jordi Amat’s owners may be happy to hold given his 4.0 price tag in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), but now may not be the time to invest in the Swansea rearguard, while there should be plenty of mid-price midfield options that offer greater potential than the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson over the coming period.

Burnley

(LIV, che, HUL, lei, WAT, ARS)

Sean Dyche’s men do have four home matches over the next six Gameweeks, but with Liverpool and Arsenal two of the sides heading to Turf Moor, and with trips to Chelsea and Leicester to also bear in mind, the upside for Burnley Fantasy assets may be limited over the coming weeks.

The Clarets failed to get on the scoresheet against Swansea, and while Liverpool and Arsenal showed defensive fragilities on Sunday, it’s hard to see Andre Gray getting too much joy in those matches, as well as in those two tricky away fixtures.

The match-ups against Hull and Watford may see some keep faith in the former Brentford striker, though. The Tigers conceded four big chances in their season opener, more than any other side, while the Hornets allowed the joint-second highest number of shots inside the box (11) against Southampton.

Defensively, the outlook is probably even gloomier, given Swansea managed 17 goal attempts on Saturday, the third highest number in Gameweek 1. With far tougher match-ups to come, barring the clash against Hull, popular pre-season budget options such as Tom Heaton may offer little clean sheet potential, although the former Man United stopper can be relied upon for saves, making seven against the Welsh outfit.

Also be wary of…

Man City
Pep Guardiola’s men only offer two home fixtures (WHM, BOU) in the next six, while they also face tough trips to neighbours United and Tottenham during that period, along with matches at Stoke and Swansea.

The early signs under the Spaniard are encouraging, but his side still look a work in progress, particularly at the back, where United and Spurs in particular may be able to find some joy. With only the matches against Bournemouth and Swansea appearing reasonably favourable from a defensive standpoint, expectations for John Stones and the City backline perhaps shouldn’t be too high over the coming period.

It’s hard to suggest any fixture is particularly difficult for Sergio Aguero and the Argentine should flourish regardless. Nonetheless, it may prove sensible to limit our City attacking coverage to the former Atletico Madrid striker, with other premium midfield options having far more favourable schedules.

Leicester City
The champions got off to a rough start at newly promoted Hull, and while they face four home matches in the next six (ARS, SWA, liv, BUR, mun, SOT), their key Fantasy assets may struggle to deliver great value with testing fixtures against Arsenal, Liverpool and United to contend with.

As already touched upon though, there are weaknesses in the Arsenal and Liverpool rearguards, so Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy may still be able to produce attacking points. The pair also have to be backed to thrive against lesser sides such as Swansea and Burnley, making the decision to stick or twist at this juncture a tricky one.

At the back, the Foxes will face the three highest scoring teams of the opening weekend in the shape of Arsenal, Liverpool and United. Swansea and Southampton also posted some decent attacking statistics, and while the return of Robert Huth from suspension should help shore up the defence, it’s hard to foresee a great return for Leicester’s backline over the next month or so.

Hull City
In the short-term, trips to Swansea and Burnley could present the Tigers with a chance to build on their 2-1 win over Leicester. Points could be possible at either end of the pitch, although neither clash can really be classed as favourable coming on the road.

Hull’s other four fixtures on the current slate (MUN, ARS, liv, CHE) could not be much tougher, with clean sheets in particular appearing unlikely in those matches, meaning budget attacking options such as Robert Snodgrass, Abel Hernandez and Adama Diomande will more than likely struggle to repeat their opening day heroics.

Every time I switch tabs on my iPad, I get logged out of this site, unless I come back within say 20/30 seconds of having changed tabs.

This is doing my NUT in. It was fine before but started doing it at the end of last season. It also does with the FPL site, and probably with other sites too so it's probably a thing that needs changing on my iPad.

    Ideas?

The problem is I can't find anything in settings which solves this issue. I also just tried changing search engines but that didn't work...

For those that don't have the money to get Ibra in one switch, it's going to be a rush tomorrow night, if you've got the exact money after you will be using your 2nd saved FT for a downgrade, it's going to be horrible because the player you downgrade won't have even played yet, plus your making 2 early transfers in the week. I'm so hoping he blanks just to avoid all this stress, in reality though it's best to get a plan now on who your going to downgrade now, because you will have about 4 hours after the game finishes to make your mind up and that's hoping he doesn't rise tonight. Maybe it might even be better to not do a exact cash downgrade, and go for a budget option and wait until all the games have been played.

Can't see him rising tonight to be honest, but agree if he scores then he's going up on Friday.

I already have my 2x transfers in my head. But like you said, it's hard because they haven't played. I have 1m in the bank so even if he goes up, my transfer will still allow me to make the transfer later in the week.

I planned for a price increase.

I've got 1m itb too but need another .5 in order to do Vardy to Ibra. I'd like to do either Oscar > Lamela or VVD > Williams but not keen on losing either before juicy gw3 fixtures.

I'd do Oscar > Lamela if I was you. I'd probably do that on Friday night too - watch the game, see how Ibra does. Make the decision.

I'm going to do Eriksen > Lamela.

        Alternative Captain Choices:

With the big two, Ibrahimovic and Aguero, splitting the votes so far in the polls, I wanted to have a look at three alternative choices that could bring home the bacon. Up against a usually solid Saints defence and tricky away match to the Britannia, I feel there maybe value elsewhere. Unlike last week, where Aguero dominated, this week carries less risk of an alternative captain and seems a good week to gamble.

        1. Sigurdsson (HUL) 0.79%

As good as home fixture as you could wish for, Siggy is proven FPL material and carries the vast majority of set-pieces in his locker with the team revolving around him. Swansea need to win these types of games at all cost and will push for goals. 8.0% ownership but nowhere to be seen on the polls. Has Hull's shock win against a disjointed Leicester caused amnesia in fantasy land that they still have a wafer-thin squad and patched up defence?

        2. Carroll (BOU) 1.27%

Looked fairly lively up against an extremely difficult defense, which once again benefited from the superb break-up play of Kante. Bournemouth simply do not have this and conceded 3 goals against an average-looking United side. With the likely return of Payet to aid supply, expect a high-scoring game, with Carroll almost certainly to be involved in the first home game at the 'London Stadium'. All of this combined with being the final fixture of the week, resulting in that feeling of hope lasting all weekend.

        3. Sanchez (Lei) 0.8%

Both teams have defensive worries due to injuries and player sales, which in turn will probably turn this game into a high-scoring affair similar to last week's game at the Emirates. The return of Huth will be a boost for Leicester, Hernandez looked like a rabbit in headlights, but they were still clearly missing Kante to protect the back four. Alot here depends on the return of Ozil and Giroud. Either way though, I expect this to be a goal-thriller and Sanchez to get off the mark.

For my own team, I own Aguero but will be selecting Siggy (c).

          Good post.

Not convinced on Siggy-no pre season

Carroll- playing in the Europa on Thursday so may be tired? Especially with his injury record.

Sanchez, good option but doesn't have the best of fixture, Leicester should do better against a team they can sit back against.

Aguero is the best option against Given and an unconvincing Stoke defence

Man City's poor record away at Stoke adds significant risk to captaining Kun i reckon. W2 D5 L3 out of the last ten games and scoring more than one goal only once.

More attacking potential for the first one, a bit less attacking potential but 0.5 ITB but also a bit risky if Ashley does not start.

what peoples views on Hart situation? yes theres an argument to be made that he should be treated better because of the time he has spent at city but I think that his longevity and lack of competition has been part of the problem. I think Pep saw a player resting on his laurels and one who seems to have made very little attempt to improve the deficiencies in his game. I think the sweeper keeper is probably the biggest revolution in football in terms of what is now expected from a player in a certain position and he didn't seem to move with the times. His distribution is poor as are his over all footballing skills and I really don't think he or anyone at city has done enough to fix them (if indeed they can be fixed, maybe Pep felt they couldn't) Overall assessment for me is a very good goalie but never close to world class in terms of the amount of errors he has made so far throughout his career.

I think he's an average keeper who has been 'stealing' a living from a top club for a long time.

I'd be surprised if any decent sized club goes for him as I imagine his wage demands will also be huge.

Maybe he'll end up somewhere like Wolves

Yeah, I actually feel for Hart. It's not totally his fault the standard of players in front of him has surpassed his own.
Shame, I get the impression he cares for the club too.

I think Hart is a good keeper, but not great. I think like a lot of English players he's overrated because he plays for a big six club. He has weaknesses that have been apparent to most for years (same as roo though different argument), parry man Hart I call him. He's no better than his potential replacements but doesn't get dropped after mistakes (foster was kicked out after one big mistake)

        1. Lamela

think it's a difference if you spent hours of planning and reading articles/comments here or if it's now just a thirty seconds thing for some noobs. everyone will end up with the same team.

The discussion is the important bit. Anyone can say pick one of these three players, but you need to inform your own decision - which you cannot get from a tweet alone.

If you are providing a service for FPL, then surely the logical thing is to provide information about the top three 7.5 midfielders owned on FPL overall, namely:

          Barkley
          Willian
          Sigurdsson

That's useful information based on overall FPL statistics and it is valid to push it out to FPL users.

But putting up the names Lamela and Redmond in particular is the result of analysis. Stick to pushing out information based on overall FPL statistics please.

What's this got to do with membership? People being far too precious, not as if this site is a secret. It's people's ability to disseminate the information that sorts out the good players from the bad.
Besides why's it fun beating people who haven't got a clue, hardly challenging

Is Tadic one of those players who looks a world beater, does all the work yet gets very few points on a weekly basis? I mean, we may get that 1 or 2 big haul a season but is it worth the other blanks..

        Team for GW2:

        De Gea/Jakupovic
        Shaw/Stones/Friend/Morgan/Smith
        Hazard (VC)/Eriksen/Deulofeu/Feghouli/Ibe
        Aguero (C)/Kane/Gray

What to do with this teams trade this week, was thinking Feghouli to Snodgrass or Ramirez?

Townsend could be a great option now Bolasie has gone. Remy 6.5m too if he goes there.

I don't much trust Pardew teams defensively but their attacking assets are decently priced for value.

Yeah Townsend is still up there. With the amount of shots he takes (outside of the box mostly, I know), one is due to go in soon enough and his assist potential is very good. Nice fixtures aswell.

I actually think Bolasie leaving hurts Townsend's potential, Yannick was a handful with his athleticism and gave the opposition something to worry about (albeit without much of an end product) but now Townsend could take on more of the focus from opposition defenders.

I don't rate Pardew's teams at all after his first 15-20 games. They always seem to tire of him, I'm not expecting much from Palace until they inevitably fire him in the next 12 months.

All just opinion and speculation on my part obviously 🙂

No, Pardew is a peculiar animal and his teams go on good and bad runs for no apparent reason.

I do think a front 4 of Townsend, Puncheon and Zaha behind Remy would have goals in it though. But they really do need a striker that can finish.

Klopp on Mane: "It was a challenge between 2 players in the air and Sadio fell on his shoulder. It's not that serious."

        and

"It won't take a long time but I don't know yet whether he will be available for this weekend."

        So, everyone keeping him then?

I do and I am, just wondering about others.

May even play him this week, just in case. Capoue 1st sub.

My current squad (I have one FT and 0 ITB)

        Adrian (Mandanda)
        Walker Stones Shaw (Evans Pieters)
        Hazard Lamela Townsend Firmino (Gradel)
        Gray Vardy Ibra

WHU have reasonable coming fixtures so I can expect some returns from Adrian, but in the game week 3 they play City away so I will need another keeper. I planned to rotate with Mandanda but he did not start in the GW1 as I expected so with the GK situation unclear at Crystal I think about selling Mandanda and buying Victor Valdes who plays WBA away in the gameweek 3. I'm happy with the rest of the team for now (Perhaps in the midterm Vardy, Gray and Stones will need to be transferred out but the next 2-3 gw I expect some return from them.)

Would you rather sell Mandanda and buy Valdes now or safe FT till the next GW?

Save the FT if you have a playing keeper

Wenger will be replaced by his own head placed in a jar of vinegar, like in Futurama. At least he won't need that enormous puffer jacket in the middle of winter, can just boil him up on the stove a bit.
