Moving Target

Moving Target – Moussa Sissoko

After acquiring Victor Wanyama, Vincent Janssen and Georges-Kevin Nkoudou this summer, Tottenham completed their transfer business with a deadline day move for Newcastle midfielder Moussa Sissoko, signing the France international for a reported fee of £30 million.

The 27-year-old put pen to paper on a five-year deal with Spurs after rejecting an offer from Everton, and speaking to the club’s official website about the move, Sissoko revealed the lure of Champions League football was a big factor behind his thinking, while he gave an insight into what Tottenham fans can expect from their latest signing:

“I am in the prime of my career and I want to play for a big team, I have the chance now with Tottenham so I’m looking forward and I hope we will do well in the Premier League and in the Champions League also. I’ve said a lot of times that I want to play in the Champions League so that’s one of the reasons why I came here – to have the possibility and the chance to play this year… I like to run forward, I like power and I have a lot of energy which I can bring to the team. I am happy to be here at this big club and I hope we will all have a good season.”

The History

At the age of 13, Sissoko joined the academy of French club Toulouse, and after impressing for the reserves, made his professional debut as a 17-year-old against Valenciennes in August 2007.

He took little time to establish himself in the first-team squad, and ended the 2007/08 campaign having made 30 league appearances, scoring one goal.

Sissoko emerged as the star of the Toulouse side over the following years, and showed plenty of loyalty to the club, staying with them until January 2013, when he joined Newcastle for a fee of around just £1.5 million, with the midfielder only having six months remaining on his contract.

During his time at the French side, Sissoko totalled 23 goals and 15 assists from 219 matches in all competitions.

In his first six months on Tyneside, Sissoko played predominantly as an attacking midfielder, and scored three goals and provided one assist in 12 league matches.

During the 2013/14 campaign, he played more often on the right side of midfield, but posted less impressive numbers, managing just three goals and six assists in 35 league appearances.

Over the last two seasons, Sissoko only netted five times in 71 Premier League matches, although he did register eight assists last season, thanks largely to playing in more advanced midfield roles. His performances were generally disappointing, though, and he couldn’t help prevent Newcastle from relegation to the Championship.

Earmarked for success from a young age, Sissoko represented France at every youth level from Under 16 upwards, making 46 appearances in total, scoring three goals. He was handed a senior debut against the Faroe Islands in October 2009, and represented his country at both the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016. The midfielder has played 44 times for France up to this point, registering one goal and four assists.

The Prospects

With Tottenham adding Nkoudou and Sissoko to their squad at the end of the transfer window, manager Mauricio Pochettino looks to have the depth needed for Spurs to fight on all fronts this season.

After seeing his side draw at home to Liverpool in Gameweek 3, the Uruguayan’s comments were telling.

With the club set embark on their first Champions League campaign since the 2010/11 season, Pochettino reckoned his side were desperately seeking an injection of pace on the flanks:

“We need a player who is more direct, more aggressive offensively. Because we have players like Eriksen, Son or Lamela who like the ball played into their feet. So we need someone who has characteristics like we saw from Liverpool, like Sadio Mane, the type of player that can break the defensive line. I’m not talking about kicking or punching someone, only running and having the right mentality.”

The 27-year-old will be expected to play either on the right of an attacking midfield trio in the Argentine’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation, or in the double-pivot alongside a holding midfield player.

The fact that Sissoko has never scored more than four times in a Premier League season highlights his lack of goal threat, although he did total 57 key passes last term, the same number as Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Having already seen the impact Janssen has made on the roles Kane and Alli, it appears the arrival of Sissoko could be equally detrimental to the minutes of Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Erik Lamela and Mousa Dembele as they look to cope with the added European matches.

Whereas last season the Argentine kept a settled starting XI, it appears inevitable he will chop and change to a greater degree this time around in the hope of avoiding the burnout that saw them stumble across the finishing line in 2015/16.

Sissoko’s price tag also harms his appeal as a Fantasy asset – he comes in at 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) despite mustering total of 109, 103 and 110 points over the last three seasons.

Tottenham’s fixture list (sto, SUN, mid, MCI, wba, bou) is fairly favourable in the short-term, but for now it’s difficult to be certain on who offers the best route into the Spurs attack, with Kane looking short of his best form and not offering great value if he’s deployed in the number ten role behind Janssen.

Essentially, the new signings afford Pochettino far greater leeway for rotation in a number of positions, damaging the prospects of all Tottenham’s attackers. Sissoko looks one to avoid for now, then, particularly when secure midfield starters such as Michail Antonio, Santi Cazorla, Ross Barkley and Marko Arnautovic are all under the 8.0-mark and offer some promising fixtures to follow.

Sissokos goal in the last day of the 14/15 season won me 2 minileagues and £550, what a guy.

Kane will just be a punt and Aguero's placeholder. I already got Sanchez in. I just want to punt on a costly player. I could get Ibra(other strikers are Costa, Gray) but I'd definitely want Aguero soon.

    Morning all!

I'd be grateful if some of you could RMWCT, complete with Aguero buy-back strategy...

    Foster | Pickford

    Baines | Valencia | Souare | Robertson | Amat

    Hazard | Ozil | Sterling | Firmino | Capoue

    Benteke | Ibrahimovic | Zaza

1.1 ITB, and the plan is Benteke, Ozil and Sterling to Aguero, Cazorla and Puncheon.

I agree that looks like a weakening and I expect some criticism but it's same team coverage so I'm happy with it, as I'm unwilling to go without Kun.

    Thoughts much appreciated, ta.

I know -4 isn't ideal, but the first three GW made me want to build my team around both Kun and Ibra. Will monitor Zlatan's form over the next two, obviously things are going to change, but that's the best plan I have come up with for now.

He does and a fire and forget option, tho you could argue for 1m less Foster is too, personally I'd go with Antonio now over lamella especially with Arbeloa arriving and Sissoko in the mix at Spurs.
It was mainly the draw of having the flexibility of having a 7m that drew me to B, if Snoddy doesn't work out there ain't a whole lot in that bracket and could end up being a hit, whereas at the 7m you have more options imho Beavis.

    B. GW4: Tadic ➡ Ozil (-4)

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Putting the fun back into Fantasy Football.

A lot of people have been questioning my wildcard this week, wondering why after a relatively good start, with key players like Hazard, West Brom defence and Ibrahimovic in place, I've 'wasted' it now.

There are a number of reasons, most notably the chance to tap into Arsenal and West Ham's kind fixtures and jettison some poor performers so far.

But the main reason is that with an international break it has been more fun to cast aside my old team and start again, trying to fit all the bits back into the jigsaw.

That got me thinking, that this reason - of playing Fantasy Football for fun - is being overlooked too often. It is a game after all.

Have you forgotten how to have fun playing Fantasy Football? Or are you a fun loving kind of Fantasy manager - if so what tips do you have for putting the smile back on the faces of those in the Fantasy doldrums.

Not sure what the tip is really but I've found as I play fantasy football more I'm able to separate it from normal football, which is strange because I do more stuff revolving around fantasy football now than ever.

Previously when I first started I was hooked on every attempt or potential clean sheet my players had. A bad week really took it's toll.

Nowadays I don't really have that for whatever reason. I find winning fun and that's what I aim to do. Getting differentials for the sake of it for example doesn't mean fun for me......although getting 15 DGWers does 🙂

Ever since I started caring about rank I found it hard to enjoy fpl. Every goal by a player that wasn't owned by me or clean sheet by a team whose defenders I didn't have annoyed me. I finished quite highly last year but wasn't satisfied with that either because it wasn't number 1 spot.

I'm not sure how to stop caring tbh, but I know for a fact that this game was more fun for me in the first few years of playing, just me in a league with my mates not caring about overall rank. I took punts on captaining Ben Arfa and other ridiculous players and sometimes they came off! But I would never dream about doing that now

Nothing wrong with caring about your rank, just don't take it too seriously.

Set targets and aim high, but be pleased about having given it your best and don't be too down if not all your targets are achieved.

We all have minor disappointments along the way, but there's always next week or next season to look forward to.

I'm sorry Jonty but these words just reek of regret. I think you realise that it may not have been the wisest decision to wildcard and now you are attempting to justify it as 'fun'.

              Ha, indeed. 🙂

I've been playing for nine seasons, with lots of high overall ranks at the end thanks in part to early wildcarding. Wildcarding makes a lot of sense with my team. But as said, above all, its fun, I love the tinkering and looking forward to the challenge of managing a squad over autumn winter up until the DGWKs.

The wildcard template has changed every week with players going from must haves to pariahs. In my opinion there are just too many unknowns at this moment in time.

Let me see....fun....rings a very vague bell....

I think I'm in the 'Only sing when I'm winning' camp - which certainly ain't at the moment. But I agree with you since my WC is now long gone its more of a fun challenge to get through to the next WC with the resources you have. The first WC is a sort of comfort blanket - till that's ripped away you have a way out...

Pretty maverick and I keep having fun. No point to the game if you don't do it.

It's going well thanks, still got my girlfriend and my job!

More importantly - 😉 - kept the hits to a minimum for the rest of last year and recovered from a poor mid-season to end inside the top 100,000.
Hoping to beat my best finish of 10,585 this year - maybe then I can join your top 10K league if you run it next year! Enjoying FPL so far this season in any case.

Love this 'hot topic', I got to the point of boredom with this all last season - Spending hours upon hours at work comparing the merits of West Brom defenders with work colleagues and laughing if a WC team didn't have Mahrez in.

I have got to the point now where I have picked 3/4 big hitters then punt on the rest, using the TSB% to force my hand into selecting low owned players of 7/8% or less. Makes it much more interesting and often forces you to look at the fixtures and those underrated players that everyone else scorns at.

Really stuck on non-WBA 4th defender:

Collins - West Ham have great fixtures, but terrible underlying stats

Koné - Sunderland have great underlying stats but haven't translated it to points, and mixed fixtures

Pieters - price good if he drops, and good fixtures coming up, but Stoke have bad underlying stats and no Butland

Friend - Middlesborough have decent underlying stats but their fixtures get tough after the next game

Is Pickford/Jak a dangerous GK combo?
Pickford - iffy at the best of times.

It opens up the budget but I'd be more comfortable if Hull hadn't signed Marshall. If Sunderland bring in a free agent then you're potentially looking at a bit of surgery to get a playing keeper

I can't see Dembele or Dier being dropped if fully fit, so my guess is Eriksen or Alli (with Eriksen shifted into the middle) is most under threat from Sissoko. Lamela is the best performing Spurs attacker atm, so I don't think he'll be dropped (at least for now).

        1. @persecuted_by_mods
            7 years, 7 months ago

If everyone is fit and on form then I think it's pretty much the exact 11 from last year. Maybe Wanyama comes in for Dier but I doubt even that. Lamela has been good but they've spent a lot of money on Sissoko so who knows

I believe you're right, same first 11 for the PL. I reckon they bought Sissoko for the cup games and to rotate around those fixtures.

To be fair, 5ppg isn't too bad for a 9.5m forward. It's just the red cards and injuries that spoil it. If he played every game he'd get 190 points over the season

Just realised that wouldn't be possible with a YC every week. Can anyone work out how many games he'd play. My estimate is 25 games.
125 is quite poor for a 9.5 forward

Between 25-30 games, based on his previous seasons at Chelsea. It is indeed quite a poor return for a 9.5

Also, what's the consensus on Byram as a pick?

Bilic has now been given instruction from David Gold to play Antonio as a winger. Who is competing with him for that RB spot? Looks immense value at 4.5m

Capoue owners who are playing WC now... Do you stick or sell and use that 0.1 he earned you? If you decide to get non playing 5th midfielder you can actually get 0.2 itb. I have to say I'm a bit worried he is now transferred in as 4th mid by some ppl and when he underperform he will start to loose value... Your thoughts?

i want Kun and Ibra in my team, plus Hazard and Ozil and a decent defense.

that is not possible without having someone this cheap to eventually play as my 4th midfielder.

he will not be on my bench 90% of the time, that's for sure.

              season keeper.

there is no better value in the game than Capoue at 4.7.

he is playing like he should be priced at 6-6.5. the goals were not flukes. he is near
or in the box every time Watford go forward. there is more to come.

selling him for a .1 profit is very short-sighted.
