The Pre-Match Preamble – Gameweek 5

This season just won’t allow us to settle.

From one Gameweek to another, our priorities are shifting with our plans forced back to the drawing board by new doubts and concerns.

The last campaign was testing but for a whole different reason.

It delivered the unexpected and some, including myself, took time to adjust to that being the norm.

We were found out by Leicester’s ascent, and it punished those who were slow to seize on the value offered by Dele Alli and Harry Kane.

Equally, when Eden Hazard flopped, and Mesut Ozil engaged his long grind of assists, some like myself, were taken by surprise.

But once you latched on to those trends, you could almost rest easy.

It felt like there were five, maybe six or seven slots in our team safely designated, leaving us to concentrate on managing the peripheral players around them according to form and fixture.

So far, this season is very different.

It feels like the stabilisers are off and, wobbling along from Gameweek to Gameweeek, we have to re-learn the real skill involved in Fantasy Football.

I don’t think we can yet bank on a set of consistent points scorers. Sergio Aguero aside, all bets are off elsewhere in our squad.

Eden Hazard has swung from near essential to disposable in a fortnight; even Zlatan Ibrahimovic will come under pressure should he blank on Sunday.

There is no comfort zone.

Each 0.1 feels precious, each transfer a significant opportunity to swap one midfield heavy hitter for another.

Loyalty and faith in players can pay off but the temptation to be fickle and act swiftly feels greater than ever.

In this week’s ScoutCast I discussed this very subject – the fact that I believe there’s a viable tactic in swapping heavy-hitters week to week, rather than settle them in and trade mid-price and budget assets.

Phillipe Coutinho, Riyad Mahrez, and Eden Hazard have already shown that we can expect runs of blanks and, usually, we’re quite happy to absorb them.

But with so much of our funds tied up in attack, can we afford to accept it? Can we expect to make up the shortfall for their failings by trading with sub 7.5 assets?

I suspect this season demands unparalleled flexibility, pushing us to explore the idea of trading big name midfielders in and out on a weekly basis, absorbing the price losses but attempting to exploit short-term form and fixtures.

It feels like we’ve been able to trundle for the last few seasons, relying heavily on a solid spine and making transfer decisions that influence our Gameweek tally, without threatening to make or break it.

But this feels different – this feels like there are constant risks and rewards to consider.

There’s a thrill to it – there is more excitement and expectation, but it also feels precarious and dangerous.

Like the day the stabilisers came off, I’m taking things steady but aware that, if I move too slowly, I may just come a cropper.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

        It was a terrible idea to start him up front for PSG though. No other midfielder had the will to create, so he had to drop back to keep their game going, which resulted in an empty box.

      I'll play devils advocate here

      Ronaldo proven himself in Spain and England and won an international tournament this year as well as the champions league with a lesser team aroumd him than messi has

      Messi has never stepped out of the comfort zone of not being in the best team in the world (apart from at Argentina where he flops). Barca minus messi equalled Spain winning everything. Messi minus barca equalled Argentina winning nothing. Easy with Xavi Iniesta Suarez Neymar Sanchez etc supplying him over the years

      Btw, I rate Messi higher than Ronaldo

            Pretty much everyone is a flop if you compare them to Maradona. Even when not scoring goals Messi has at the very least had some very good games for Argentina in tournaments even if the team as a whole didn't.

                I agree with you there. It seems we are probably disagreeing on the definition of being a "flop". I think we can both agree he has been far from brilliant on the international scene. And definitely nowhere near the previous greats.

        It's not like Ronaldo is playing with sub-par players either though.

        International tournament makes no different to me.

        It's a bit like the tennis in recent years. Murray is a fantastic player but he's just not Djokovic.

        Ronaldo is a fantastic player, he's just not Messi.

        *I'm not saying the difference between Ronaldo and Messi is the same as Djokovic and Murray, it's just an example!*

          I agree on international tournament, for me, neither truly test themselves regularly and both have it easy with la liga and teams they play in and both have been flops at international level. Neither is of levels of maradona or zidane or beckanbauer or pele. Thats the all time elite and is a step above these 2

                      7 years, 8 months ago

                      Yup. They way they play mistakes will always happen and teams will always got big chances during the game. Mignolet himself isn't good enough anyway. Statistically they look good, won't concede many but wouldn't like to rely on them for a clean sheet

                  2. @persecuted_by_mods
                      7 years, 8 months ago

                      Stats don't tell the whole story clearly, otherwise they would have kept clean sheets already. The way they play their always liable to give away big chances

                        Have they conceded many big chances though or is it just Mignolet being Mignolet?

                            Tbf to mignolet not much this season has been his actual fault. But the players behave differently when they know he's liable to flop at any minute. Stats aside (where they admittedly look good defensively) I can see them conceding in most games, personel and tactics play into that

              Really confident this week
              Mandanda
              Stones, Williams, Masuaku
              Antonio, De Bruyne, Bolasie, Sanchez (C)
              Tekkers, Zlatan, Lukaku

              Bench: Heaton, Rodwell, Amat, Smith

              Now I need to figure out a Kun plan which will mean taking a hit.

                KDB out is the obvious candidate to free up cash, surely?

                  Thats my most likely player going out to free up cash for Kun. But who do I replace him with? I would have 7.2 available for a De Bruyne replacement, Lallana maybe?...

              Hazard -> Firmino
              Ibrahimovic -> Aguero

              or

              (-4)
              Hazard -> Firmino
              Sterling -> Maloney
              Benteke -> Aguero

              Would leave Capoue as the 4th mid

              Is it me or does the WC team we choose this season have that extra importance to get right?

                I have neither but it's doubtful, Sterling is the most likely to start in a false 9 anyway. Might see Sane start ahead of one of the two you mention, but either Nacho or Sterling will be in the middle i'd imagine.
