Scout Notes – Champions League – Tuesday

Mahrez edges Leicester to within touching distance of the knock-out stages while Lloris saves Spurs in Germany. Here’s the key moments from Tuesday’s Champions League matches…

Bayer Leverkusen 0 Tottenham Hotspur 0

It’s been a good few days for keepers. After Sunday’s Tom Heaton heroics and David de Gea’s Monday masterclass, it was all about Hugo Lloris (5.5) as Spurs held out for a point against Leverkusen.

Having had the better of the first-half, Tottenham hung on after the break, with Lloris making three superb saves.

Coach Mauricio Pochettino made four changes from the team who drew at West Brom.

Kieran Trippier’s (4.8) inclusion allowed Kyle Walker (6.0) to have his customary Euro break, while Heung-Min Son (7.7) and Danny Rose (5.9) returned to the starting line-up and Eric Dier (5.2) replaced the injured Toby Alderweireld (6.5).

This would appear to indicate starts for Walker and perhaps Ben Davies (4.9) in Gameweek 9.

Son didn’t come in for Vincent Janssen (7.8) up front, however, but in a midfield swap with Moussa Sissoko (6.8).

Should Pochettino continue with that tactic in the Premier League, the 13.3% of Fantasy Premier League managers with Son in their squads will be concerned about their man’s potentially reduced goal threat, particularly with Harry Kane (10.7) thought to be lining up a Gameweek 11 return.

Janssen again failed to score, although he did hit the bar, and Dele Alli (8.2) should have done better when he headed wide from six yards out.

Pochettino praised his keeper post-match – and gave an update on the 18.1%-owned Alderweireld.

“To talk about Hugo, he’s one of the best. That’s my opinion about him. It’s great to have him in goal. His save was fantastic and very important for the team. It’s difficult for the weekend because it’s still painful for him (Alderweireld) but it’s important that the scan was all clear. We’ll now see. If he’s not involved this weekend, maybe for the next few games.”

Alderweireld’s potential absence at Bournemouth will come as a blow, not just to his own 18% ownership but also the 36.7% with Walker in their line-ups.

The Belgian is a vital component of Pochettino’s defence which will be more vulnerable at the Vitality without his influence.

Spurs have kept four clean sheets to this point – more than any other Premier League side – but will be colliding with a Bournemouth outfit with three successive home wins, having scored eight goals over those matches.

Their next Champions League encounter will see them host Bayer Leverkusen at White Hart Lane following the Gameweek 10 date with Leicester City.

Spurs XI: Lloris, Trippier, Dier, Vertonghen, Rose, Alli, Wanyama, Lamela (Sissoko 71), Eriksen, Son (Onomah 90), Janssen (Dembele 65).

Leicester City 1 FC Copenhagen 0

The returning Algerian duo of Riyad Mahrez (9.2) and Islam Slimani (8.5) kept Leicester’s 100% Champions League record intact.

Rested at the weekend, an influential Mahrez flicked home Slimani’s header for the winner to virtually assure new year European football for the Foxes.

Boss Claudio Ranieri also restored full-back Danny Simpson (5.0) to the Leicester defence, which kept a second European clean sheet to go with their three domestic shut-outs. For that they had Kasper Schmeichel (5.0) to thank, the Dane making a fine late save.

Post-match, Ranieri was keen to turn the attention back to his team’s poor domestic form.

“You spend a lot of mental energy in the Champions League. When you come back, you are a little down, but this is normal. We want to change this mood because it is important now for us the Premier League. The Premier League is our priority.”

One player struggling in both competitions is Jamie Vardy (9.7). He again failed to score and has no goals in Europe and just two in the league this season, while Slimani continues to impress.

The Englishman enjoys 12.0% ownership, Slimani just 1.7%. A trip to Spurs aside, the Foxes have a blossoming set of fixtures to come, including Crystal Palace, West Brom and Middlesbrough at home and a trip to Sunderland.

Slimani, who is 1.2 cheaper and has matched Vardy’s goal count from four fewer starts, could offer a better value investment over that kindly spell.

Meanwhile, Mahrez continues to shine in Europe without translating that to Fantasy returns – he’s fetched just a single assist since his Gameweek 1 penalty kick at Hull City but has three Champions League goals.

The Foxes face the reverse fixture in Copenhagen on November 2, four days after the Gameweek trip to Spurs.

Leicester City XI: Schmeichel, Simpson, Morgan, Huth, Fuchs, Mahrez (Amartey 91), King, Drinkwater, Albrighton, Vardy (Okazaki 84), Slimani (Ulloa 87).

Austin is no doubt a good option. Benteke hasn't become a bad option all of a sudden though. He is still a good option too. I do prefer Arnie to Snod but these moves don't look worth a hit to me.

Thinking of doing Friend + Antonio to Pieters + Lallana for a hit. Would it be worthwhile ditching Rashford for a further hit?

You've taken a drop on Antonio now, might as well play him unless you're trying to finance a specific move (like A) - I had a fail reply to this saying I was keeping him because of Sunderland and the drop.

Depends on your gut really, I'd probably say C for me but if you feel like Lovren and Wally is the way to go then do that 🙂

Because Walcott is home to Boro. But I'd only do that if I were captaining Walcott.

I see no sense in doing PVA to Pieters for free this week. If you are planning on getting Walcott next week, it makes more sense to me to roll the FT this week so you are flexible with the other FT next week. PVA hasn't been ruled out.

Antonio has just a good a chance as Theo to explode this week given the fixtures.

Why gamble -4 on it? You'll need Theo to get at least a goal and hope Antonio gets nothing.

Plus Pieters chances of cleansheet are much higher than PvAs. He's also a good long term move with great fixtures coming up

So you are saying Antonio is as good as any option this GW? I don't agree, because I think he will play at RB and other players will get to the goal scoring chances

No, that's complete rubbish. While Antonio certainly could explode, given form and the fact he will likely play RB he is clearly less likely to explode.

I'm only saying to do this if captaining Walcott. I did Antonio to Walcott for a hit and captained Walcott last GW. Went ok. Captaining increases value of the transfer.

Pieters has higher chance of CS but less chance for attacking points/baps. I'd rather have Pieters this week yes but saving the FT could avoid a hit next GW.

Thats not what I said. Theo is a better option, but not for a hit. Especially when Antonio has Sunderland(H) this week.

You got Antonio for a reason in the first place.

You seem pretty happy with your decision so why are you bothering asking? Go ahead and take the hit - if you don't like my suggestion that's fine

    Stekz, Jaku
    Stones, Lovren, Holebas, Evans, Amat
    Sanchez, Firmino, Sterling, Allen, Capoue
    Aguero, Lukaku, Austin

1 FT (already used 1 to get Allen instead of Antonio), 2,5 ITB.

What would your first priority be for this team?
I’m somewhat tempted by Sterling -> Wally, but I kinda like the balance of my midfield as it is.
Then there’s the question of defense, which could definitely need an upgrade. But I can’t figure out what the wisest thing would be:

    A) Sterling -> Wally
    B) Upgrade defense – Stones to?
    C) Save FT
    D) Other

Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Do you think Poch will fall back into the cycle of rotating his fullbacks literally every game like he did at times last season i.e. Walker and Davies played against WBrom, Trippier and Rose against Leverkusen, then Walker and Davies to play against Bou and then Trippier and Rose against Liv and so on or do you think he is picking it based on the fixtures?

Bit of both but it's pretty obvious Walker and Rose first choice

    Midfield Crisis!!
My mids are Allen, Puncheon, Sanchez, Firmino and Sterling..

Should I do Sanchez to KDB and Sterling to Walcott?
Could then upgrade Puncheon next week

50/50 call but I swapped Antonio to Siggy for a hit. In the next few GWs I need to find a way to get KdB in. Help?

    Cech / Pickford
    Walker Lovren Holebas (Baines, Amat)
    Mané Firmino Walcott Siggy Allen
    Aguero Lukaku (C Wilson)

Not a 50 50 call. Siggy -4 would be underdog to outscore Antonio

With a 4pt handicap Siggy has to get attacking returns to stand a chance. That ain't 50 50

Mane > De Bruyne may be the best chance to bring him in. Have to downgrade somewhere else though obviously; either downgrade defence (probably Baines and Lovren) or forwards (one of Aguero or Lukaku)

How much ITB? Can u do Baines > Pieters and Mane > KDB?
If not enough money maybe Cech > 5.0 keeper. Maybe Kaspi? Lei will have great fixtures soon and are nearly through in CL. They can and should concentrate on EPL.

Hi guys, plss this is my team for GW9, kindly assist me with me with transfers, save FT and any other suggestions.

    Jaku
    Walker, Blind, Morgan, Holebas
    Sanchez, Mane, Snodgrass, Antonio
    Kun, Lukaku

    Bench: Pickford, Capoue, Deeney, Smith(Inj)

    1. 2FT and thinking of getting rid of Antonio but dont know who to replace with. Or shd i keep him?
    2. Thinkn of selling Deeney but dont know who to replace with..
    3. Is it advisable to keep watford players on bench?

Your thoughts would be much appreciated.

Have you considered Antonio to Lallana and Liverpool double up, or why not even triple up with another defender?

I'd use one FT and save the other. I'd be tempted to get rid of Morgan; Leicester don't look the part in premiership.

      1. Would probably go Walcott but, wait till after tonight's match
      2. Deeney > Austin would be my move but, probably wouldn't play Austin this week.
      3. Definitely keep Capoue on the bench but, Deeney likely to score (Swansea's defence hasn't been solid this year)

Can someone finds me Jonty's FPL ID please :)?

We had very similar GW4 WC teams and I want to compare our transfers after that, just to see what went wrong for Jonty and relatively good for me. I climbed form around 643k in GW5 to 133k this week.

My front 3 did nothing this GW. Ibra+ Kun+ Slimani=1point. I don't care about price rises/falls but I'm still (somehow) convinced that this combination is the right. Despite Kun being under a big rotation/rest threat. Ibra has to break and socre soon and Slimani should do better than Vardy in those fixtures comming. Your insights are welcome.

    1. Rhinos
      • 10 Years

If you gonna be stubborn with Ibra may as well hold now. Slimani interesting pick but I can't be having Leicester attackers at those prices

    2. Football Weekender
      • 7 Years

Time to cut your losses on Ibra. Yes he might score soon but he's just not worth that price. Sell and use the money to strengthen elsewhere.

      1. Ibra - Not giving enough back for his price when Costa / Lukaku are scoring almost every week. He might get a brace at some point but, his lack of any returns combined with price surely makes him unviable!
      2. Kun - fine
      3. Slimani - Better cheaper options or if you downgraded Ibra you could upgrade him giving you Kun / Lukaku / Costa
