Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 11

Our latest captain poll has now launched to assess your thoughts on the optimum armband options for Gameweek 11.

Nine out of ten of those who voted in our last poll for Gameweek 10 dismissed Sergio Aguero (13.0) as a viable captain. With a brace and assist away to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday, many won’t be making the same mistake this time around.

An Etihad meeting with Middlesbrough is expected to see the Manchester City striker dominate this week’s poll, after he so cruelly punished the 100,000 Fantasy Premier League managers that ditched him in the previous two Gameweeks. Already 50,000 have moved to acquire the Argentine ahead of the weekend.

Aguero’s team-mate Kevin De Bruyne (10.7) offers a solid alternative. Back from injury, he supplied the killer pass for City’s fourth goal on Saturday from a cameo role off the bench. That was the 9.0% owned midfielder’s seventh assist of the season, the highest tally of any player so far; he looks set to start against ‘Boro ahead of the international break.

A word of caution, though, as the Teesside team may not be as obliging as West Brom. Aitor Karanka’s troops have conceded just twice and kept two clean sheets over their last four league fixtures – one of them at the Emirates.

Interest in another star of Gameweek 10, Alexis Sanchez (11.4), may be muted this week, with a tough North London derby clash with Tottenham Hotspur beckoning.

Despite the 24.9% owned Chilean’s brace away at Sunderland, Spurs will present a far sterner test. Like ‘Boro, they boast a defence that has conceded just twice in their last four outings.

Another London club provide two options that will surely tempt consideration.

With three goals and an assist over his last trio of matches, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard (9.9) looks to be back to his best, flourishing in Antonio Conte’s 3-4-3 formation. It would be no surprise to see the 19.9% owned Belgian pushing Aguero for top spot this week ahead of Everton’s visit to Stamford Bridge.

Meanwhile, his team-mate Diego Costa (10.4) has also proved a revelation, topping the scoring charts with eight goals and providing just two blanks over his ten Gameweeks.

The 38.2% owned Spain international has also crushed the notion he cannot earn bonus points, accruing seven to this point.

Liverpool present a raft of alternative candidates when Watford visit Anfield.

Philippe Coutinho (8.5) brought his season assist tally to five at the weekend and has also found the net on four occasions.

Roberto Firmino (8.6) is just eight FPL points behind him and another Red to offer consistent returns. The “false nine” has delivered attacking returns in three of his last four Gameweeks.

With 34 FPL points across his previous four Anfield matches, Sadio Mane (9.0) is another armband candidate from Liverpool’s fluid attacking midfield. Of the trio, Coutinho is by far the most popular, commanding a 40.9% ownership, more than any other midfielder.

Two south coast teams offer some left-field options thanks to kind match-ups in Gameweek 11.

Hull City showed spirit in the 1-0 defeat to Watford but may struggle to keep Southampton at bay at the KCOM Stadium.

The Saints’ Charlie Austin (6.6) presents a differential option for the trip to Humberside. The 12% owned striker has scored four times since claiming a starting role in Gameweek 5.

With four goals shipped at home to Arsenal on Saturday, Sunderland’s defence remains in an obliging mood.

Their visit to Bournemouth presents Cherries forward Callum Wilson (6.6) with a good opportunity of adding to his three-goal tally, all of which have been scored at the Vitality Stadium.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week, as we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering our view of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Is November a cursed month for Arsenal?

As many of you know, November is not the favorite month for Arsenal. Watching them play last Saturday I was convinced that they would win the game when the score was 1-1. In season's past they would have lost two points. But this year I'm seeing an Arsenal side with much more experience and a lot more options for Wenger to choose from.

Taking a look at Arsenal's fixtures in November, they have 6 matches in all competitions. They start tomorrow away at Ludogorets in Bulgaria. Then they have the North London derby on Sunday vs Spurs. Arsenal have not won this game in the league since 2013. After the derby there is the international break. Next is an away game vs Man Utd on the 19th, with Mourinho doing his best to keep his positive record against Wenger. Four days later they wait for PSG at the Emirates in the Champions League. A home league fixture is next against Bournemouth and again 3 days later they host Southampton in the EFL cup. Those are the November fixtures and the Gunners start December with an away game in London vs West Ham. This is their fixture list:

    01/11 AWAY vs Ludogorets (CL)
    06/11 HOME vs Spurs
    IB
    19/11 AWAY vs Man Utd
    23/11 HOME vs PSG (CL)
    27/11 HOME vs Bournemouth
    30/11 HOME vs Southampton (EFL)
    03/12 AWAY vs West Ham

Should we ditch Sanchez, Walcott, Ozil, Bellerin, Koscielny and all our Arsenal assets for the coming month? Should we jump on Chelsea and Liverpool players having form and no European matches? Will Wenger be able to beat the curse of November this year?

Most definately not ditching all the players I own from the second highest scoring team in the league, sitting second and on a winning run in all competitions.

There may well be good reasons they had bad November months previously (Schedule, tough fixtures, injuries) but at the moment I can't see them just stop playing well all together just because it's November. And especially not players such as Sanchez just stop scoring and assisting because it's November....

I'm just looking at selling Walcott, because of his injury record and to fund a transfer.

If I had Walcott I would sell him as well. But I'm not sure with Sanchez. He's proven to be class no matter what. Having patience with players like him will eventually pay off big time, just like last weekend with him and Aguero when many FPL players were selling them.

But he's joined in full training now:

Jeorge Bird ‏@jeorgebird 2m2 minutes ago
Walcott in full training. Chris Willock trained with first-team along with Reine-Adelaide.

I'm six points off the top of winning my monthly mini league prize with him to play... I'd take a single assist with glee abandon

    Vertonghen - Williams* - Evans
    Sanchez - Firmino - Coutinho - Arnautovic
    Aguero (C) - Lukaku - Austin

    Pickford - Capoue - Amat - Friend

i'm thinking about it, and it's a close call. fuchs gets more bps, but i'm not that confident on leicester defense just yet. if they can't keep clean sheets, having a lower-priced defender allows you to be more patient with them instead of rage-transferring them out. and you get defenders for clean sheets, attacking returns are usually too infrequent to count on them.

the most important thing is that everyone wants more cash this season. not enough bargains around, so you really need the money. moves like this one might make the difference between getting austin or callum wilson.

but it's a boring move, i'll give you that 🙂 i'm mostly trying to convince myself it's the right one.

I think it needs to be better regarding recent form and playing time. If a player like say Rashford, is a doubt for a start but then has a run of games (like he has now) it still seems to be working it out as if he'll be a sub most weeks.

I wonder if it would work better if, like the ticker, you can input you own stats into the teams dependent upon the form they're in.

I still like it as a guide, but it seemed to be much more accurate two years ago.

Are we expecting Grant, and/or Pickford to keep their places until Christmas?

I heard Butland has a set back on the ankle injury.

Mannone back in training, and I think it would be a good idea to take Pickford out of the firing line.

Ideally yes but costa and lukaku are pretty solid too and i'd guess it would be difficult to find enough money to upgrade either to Aguero

Some advice, which I am going to start taking myself. Never buy a player for one gameweek with the intention of selling him on the next. i.e. What I did this week with Deeney. Other problems will always arise and scupper your plans. I would have been much better off just bringing Austin in last week instead of Deeney.

It's like what some people do on wildcard if x has a tough fixture that week, they buy y instead just to do y > x the week after.

      If that made sense.

very much, I always compare it to betting on a treble on the horses. you know people it paid off for but there are loads where it fails that you never hear about.

Looking for replacements for Capoue and Snodgrass here. Looking at Matic/Moses. I know Allen will be popular but I have Arnie. Could also afford Redmond + > 4.6 mid (Barry/Fletcher maybe). thoughts?

    Foster / Pickford
    Walker / Smith / Gibson / Amat / Love
    Sanchez / Firmino / Arnautovic / Snodgrass / Capoue
    Aguero / Costa / Lukaku

I'd go for a 4.3 who plays (Hojbjerg/de Roon) for one of the slots

I'm also shipping Snodgrass and looking at Moses as a replacement due to his attacking threat.

I'm not keen on the Matic idea. Have you considered Gundogan as well? Is he affordable? His fixtures are a lot kinder and even though he may not be as nailed as Matic, he's just proved he can be more involved as a Goal threat.

      1. Laporte In A Storm

I would have 10.6 to spend, so I could afford Moses / Allen, Gundogan / Allen or Gundogan / Matic. Given I have Arnie, the Matic combo does interest me at the moment - why do you not like the Matic pick?

        1. Gommy
          • 14 Years
          7 years, 6 months ago

Speaking as a Chelsea fan myself, Matic will always naturally hold a much more defensive position on the pitch and because of that reason, wouldn't offer an attacking threat as often as some of the other picks. Most certainly not as much as Moses.

Moses/Gundogan would be my choices out of the players you are mentioning but I guess you've already confirmed that you cannot afford that combination.

Yeah, sadly not. Okay, how about one final affordable combination - Redmond / Barry.

            1. Gommy

              7 years, 6 months ago

Difficult to measure the difference there because both Redmond is clearly more attacking than Gundogan and Barry is slightly more than Matic. However, on paper, fixtures look to counter those gains. Particularly City's being the best of all Teams considered.

To be honest with you, we're talking very slight margins with all combinations mentioned so I don't think you could go too far wrong with which ever one you go for.

What are fellow Benteke owners doing?

He's more expensive than Austin with similar fixtures, but he does seem to be getting into the positions to get chances quite a bit. Not sure whether now is the time to cash in before price alters.

Walcott in full training. Chris Willock trained with first-team along with Reine-Adelaide.

Not a guarantee as Cazorla was in full training Friday and missed Sunderland, but it's good news at least.

Forced into making transfers early this week. Really frustrating with CL games, but had to do it to get the players I wanted... I would say yes, but only if you can't afford it when price changes happen.

    A) Fuchs
    B) Morgan

I think Fuchs is worth the extra, but makes it slightly trickier to get Hazard in.

To be fair, Liverpool away isn't a bad fixture for Deeney. Pool are so bad at defending. Deeney has looked shocking but could easily nab something in that game. Then has two home fixtures. Might keep and hope for the best
