DraftKings Champions League – Tuesday

The Champions League returns this evening when the Group Stage Matchday Five gets underway with DraftKings offering a top prize on Tuesday of £550*, as part of a £11k prize pool.

This $3 entry contest is posted in the DraftKings lobby, with details of Wednesday’s prize pool and top prize to be announced in due course. Enter for Free with your first deposit.

Things kick off on Tuesday night where we are tasked with picking the very best eight-man squad from the seven fixtures taking place from 7:45pm onwards, which means the early fixture between CSKA Moscow and Bayer Leverkusen is omitted from the slate.

The Wednesday list has six 7.45pm fixtures to select players from, missing out Bayern Munich’s visit to FC Rostov and the clash between Besiktas and Benfica.

If you’re new to DraftKings, check out our strategy guide which should help you get to grips with the concepts of Daily Fantasy Football and the key elements of squad selection.

Here are our player picks to aid your selection process for both the Tuesday and Wednesday ties.

Tuesday Player Picks

Group E

Monaco v Tottenham Hotspurs

Group F

Borussia Dortmund v Legia Warsaw

Sporting v Real Madrid

Group G

Copenhagen v Porto

Leicester City v Club Brugge

Group H

Dinamo Zagreb v Lyon

Sevilla v Juventus

Sergio Rico – Goalkeeper – Sevilla – $4,700
There are several tempting goalkeeper picks on the Tuesday slate. Dortmund’s Roman Weidenfeller ($5,800) and Leicester City’s Ron-Robert Zieler ($5,600) will replace their injured team-mates between the sticks and have favourable fixtures.

The Sevilla shot-stopper is a riskier pick but saves some funds. The young Spaniard has put himself on the radar by keeping four consecutive Champions League clean sheets. Juventus visit next having been held to a goalless draw in Turin on Matchday 1.

Four saves against the Italians shows Rico is capable of turning in a performance and another will likely be needed if Sevilla are to pick up a result. Gonzalo Higuain has been ruled out which should certainly blunt Juve’s threat.

Alex Telles – Defender – Porto – $4,900
The Brazilian has accrued 46 crosses over six European appearances this term. Eleven of those arrived in the 1-0 victory over Club Brugge last time out in which he assisted the winner.

The full-back travels to a Copenhagen side whose main strikers Andreas Cornelius and Federico Santander are sidelined, which bodes well for a clean sheet. The Danish team could struggle to break through a Porto rear guard that have conceded only two goals in their last seven league matches.

Corentin Tolisso – Midfielder – Lyon – $5,800
The Frenchman’s late header from a free-kick secured a point for Lyon against Juventus. It was his second goal in the Champions League after he scored the opener and assisted the third in the 3-0 win over upcoming opponents Dinamo Zagreb on the opening Matchday. An 11.7 Fantasy Points Per Game (FPPG) over four Champion League matches indicates he’s a potentially good value differential pick against a side that have conceded 12 goals while failing to score in Europe this season.

Radamel Falcao – Forward – Monaco – $6,900
The Colombian missed two Champions League matches with an injury but returned with a brace against CSKA Moscow. In his previous outing, Monaco won 2-1 against Spurs at Wembley on Matchday 1 and can go through to the knock-out stages with a draw or a win in France. The budget forward scored against Lorient at the weekend to maintain his resurgent form, making it five goals in the last five outings.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – Forward – Borussia Dortmund – $9,300
Cristiano Ronaldo’s ($10,700) hat-trick against Atletico at the weekend will make him a popular pick against his former club Sporting. Aubameyang is our cheaper in-form alternative and has netted 15 goals in 13 league and European matches this campaign. Visitors Legia Warsaw have looked well out of their depth so far, conceding 16 goals in four Champions League matches, including six in their previous encounter with Dortmund.

Wednesday Player Picks

Group A

Arsenal v Paris Saint Germain

Ludogorets v FC Basel

Group B

Napoli v Dynamo Kyiv

Group C

Monchengladbach v Manchester City

Celtic v Barcelona

Group D

Atletico Madrid v PSV Eindhoven

Jan Oblak – Goalkeeper – Atletico Madrid – $5,800

Clean sheets look more difficult to predict for the Wednesday night fixtures. The 3-0 loss to Real Madrid at the weekend was a third league defeat in four for Atletico, but they’ve conceded only one goal in four Champions League outings. Visitors PSV won’t provide the same kind of challenge and Atletico’s Slovenian shot-stopper should pick up the DraftKings win bonus.

Faouzi Ghoulam – Defender – Napoli – $5,600
The Algerian has served up two assists in four Champions League matches and also created three goals in the league this term. Napoli can be vulnerable but visitors Dynamo Kiev have not scored in their last two matches in Europe, so a shut-out is on the cards. Even if the defence is breached, the left-back has registered 153 crosses in 18 matches this term so he should make up for it in attacking returns.

Ilkay Gundogan – Midfielder – Manchester City – $6,000
The German scored a brace against Barcelona in City’s landmark 3-1 victory to make it five goals from 33 shots in 14 appearances this season. An assist against upcoming opponents Monchengladbach has also helped contribute to a solid 11.5 points per match average. The midfielder should start after being left out of the squad at the weekend and provides an in-form budget route into Pep Guardiola’s side.

Dries Mertens – Midfielder/Forward – Napoli – $7,800
The Napoli asset has contributed attacking returns in all four European outings so far, netting three times and providing as many assists. All three of those goals have arrived in the two home matches at the Stadium San Paolo so the Belgian looks a strong pick for the visit of Dynamo Kyiv.

Neymar/Lionel Messi – Forwards – Barcelona – $10,000/$10,400
Barca’s trip to Celtic, who they dispatched 6-0 in Spain, means fitting in one of their big hitters looks a must. Neymar has scored twice in the Champions League this campaign but has displayed more of a creative influence overall, serving up six assists. Four of those arrived against Celtic.

However, it’s difficult to ignore his Argentine team-mate after he scored two hat-tricks in Europe already this season. The consolation goal against Manchester City was Messi’s seventh in three outings, while he also provided assists with each of those hat-tricks and should be worth the outlay for the encounter in Scotland.

Sterling to whom, really? Already have Siggy and was so sure about a Wally transfer 2-3 weeks ago. Wally's stock has just tanked in no time all of a sudden.

Sterling to Pedro, have a feeling Tottenham defence (weakened) will concede from that roving Chelsea attack

But Pedro's next two are tricky. Even if he does well in one, he will most likely blank in another.

only 2 players int he Overall top 20 have Aguero in their team. Now i'm starting to edge towards getting rid. God knows how many without in the top 100/1000/100000

That's the reason they are in teh top 20, doesn't mean it will continue though - if Aguero gets a hatty this week, they will quickly fall out of top 20

True but I wonder how long they have gone without him it has obviously benefited them if they have. I wonder if I had costa like most of them do would i be closer to the top. I'm ranked 46,000 atm.

    https://anewpla.net/fpl/league/live.php

This is slowly coming on. Now you can either load all leagues for a player ID or load a specific league ID.

Handles if a player hasn't played any minutes in a game or the game hasn't started yet and easier to read with the player lists hidden by default.

I can do Sanchez, Gundogan, Lukaku > Giroud, Hazard, Sigurdsson for -4, would've love to mix it up in that direction, but I guess it's too early to bring in Giroud, too late to sell Sanchez and not the perfect timing to get Hazard. Thoughts?

I wouldn´t do those moves as long as Sanchez is playing up top, and Giroud is on the bench for 60-70. Hazard with some though games coming up. Monitor until gw15, when their fixtures turn?

Gundogan and Lukaku is dispensable though. I´m doing Lukaku, Allen --> Coutinho, Austin fwiw.

Indeed, it's probably best to wait. I'm probably selling Lukaku and Gundogan for Austin and Sigurdsson, a bit short for Coutinho, but it gives me the funds to upgrade my impoverished defence 🙂

Man United attacking assets. It's hard to sell the idea of bringing one in considering we've only scored one more goal than West Brom and are on the same as Watford this season....

But, looking at the stats, are the goals just around the corner or do we not have the players to finish the chances? Is West Ham (h) a good enough fixture for us to put a good 3-4 goals against someone again.

I've had a look at team stats over the last 4 game weeks where we've played Chelsea (a) and Arsenal (h) and here's how we hold up:

    Goal attempts - 2nd
Shots in the box - 3rd
    Blocked shots - 1st
    Chances created - 2nd
    Goal conversion - 17th

(granted we had a lot of attempts versus Burnley!)

Someone who's more of a stats man than me could help here - surely that goal conversion will start to creep up as the season goes on to get closer to the average? I guess the problem is when that happens, not if. We could still be a long way from it happening.

In the next 7 our fixtures are:

    West Ham (h), Everton (a), Spurs (h), Palace (a), WBA (a), Sunderland (h), Boro (h)

Is there goals there and could Mata or Ibra could flourish?

In the last 4 game weeks Ibra is top for shots on target even though he's missed a game, 3rd for chances created and joint 2nd for shots inside the box.

I know I held on to Ibra too long in the end, but is it madness to now want him back? Am I just searching for stats to find something that's just not there?

It's just been said for three(?) seasons now, that their upturn is just around the corner. I am done taking chances on them and will have to see them performing consistently for several GW's before I bring an assett in. Especially with how many other options there are, atleast in midfield

Difference is this season we're creating and having shots.

Last season we were 15th by the end of the season for goal attempts, 16th for shots in the box and 17th for chances created.

Sometimes you just have to try and get ahead of the game 🙂

Mata for example could go alongside Firmino, Coutinho, Hazard - obviously all depends what kind of a setup you have.

Imagine if the board had seen those stats before hiring LVG. He wouldn't have even made it to the interview. Makes you wonder how correct Jose is to question the culture at the Utd. They essentially have no experience of running a title challenging club given how long Sir Alex kept them safe at the top for. Falcao on loan was an utterly ridiculous signing given his fitness, price and lack of experience and they must have know LVGs style would rely entirely on results given how it was always going to frustrate the fans. Di Maria was completely wasted. Should have been given regular starts at RW which was obvious to any football fan. The guy got 12 assists in the league when he only played in half the games. Imagine if he'd played more in a comfortable role!? Moyes was another risky appointment even though the notion of league experience was considered a safe bet. He had no idea how to manage a top four team and was never cut out to deal with the media pressure of being Utd boss. I reckon Jose is bang on, the club is being run as a business and the trickle down effect is hurting the transfer policy, players mentality and overall identity of the team. The fact no manager since Sir Alex has figured out his best 11 speaks volumes. They need to stop throwing money at the market and focus on playing football, not branding. Time will only tell if Pogba and Miki are worth the money and I give them no credit for signing Zlatan who gives goals to any team. We were all singing the praises of their summer window but it's more of the same. Eric B has been the stand out transfer by a long shot and goodness knows how LVG didn't get the best out of Herrera and Mata. Rant over. Sorry for the essay Andy. As a fellow Utd fan I've been worked up about this for quite some time!

Pogba seems like a great option against the grain, check out his home stats, obviously the price is a bit steep but I feel as though he could emerge as a template breaker over the next few weeks.

I think Ibra is a great option, confident that his conversion rate will increase. I believe he's just been unlucky so far. It's such a fine margin between a goal being scored and keeper making a save or shot going slightly wide. People make too many conclusions based on short terms results. What's important is the quality of chances a team is creating/conceding and the quality of players a team has to convert them. Ibra is top quality finisher imo, he's proved it throughout his career, just had an unlucky spell. I don't think age has a negative effect on finishing ability and fully expect him to score a lot this season

Also if you look at sporting index points spreads, these are approximate points expected from now until end of season. Man U aren't much different to others suggesting they're expected to improve relative to these teams compared to season so far

        Man City - 53
        Chelsea - 52
        Liverpool - 52
        Arsneal - 50
        Man U - 48

I thinking ur showing to much interest in them.
Best waiting until they start finishing those chances over a few games than getting them early for more low scoring games.
Man Utd attackers seem way overpriced for their returns.
Mata the best option at the moment but is he a better pick than firmino coutinho lallana siggurdsson Walcott Chadli

I also posted a few weeks back that with Ibra's shots stats he should reasonably expect to be on 12-15 goals by now. He's been very unlucky and the Burnley game was a joke. That early missed chance vs Stoke maybe knocked his confidence a tad but hopefully the brace last time out should see him firing again.

I am more than confident that several sides are going to be on the end of a hiding soon over these fixtures and Ibra will be heavily involved.

Great article Tom. I like all of your Tuesday picks. A few more suggestions I have are:

GK: Lloris(TOT) or Subasic(MON). I can see it being a very close game therefore if you get the correct keeper you could get plenty of saves coupled with CS and WIN bonuses.

D: Rybus(OL) or Hernandez(LEI). Rybus is very attacking with loads of shots and crosses whilst also having one of tonight's easiest fixtures.
I could be wrong but I think Hernandez is the cheapest full back that's likely to start tonight which is important because that's the position where most defender's points come from.

M: Diogo Jota(POR) and Castro(DOR) Jota's priced at 5.2k and starting at attacking midfielder against relatively weak opposition in Copenhagen. Also he's got 4 goals and 2 assists in the Portuguese league this year so he's definitely capable of scoring.
Castro has 3 goals and 7 assists in the league this year with a goal and an assist in the reverse UCL fixture against Legia Warsaw. With Dortmund expected to win comfortably tonight he should be somewhat involved.

F: Lacazette(OL) and Benzema(RM). Both have reasonably easy fixtures and should have relatively low ownership with Dortmund and other RM players taking most of the attention. If Benzema is on the bench then one of the RM options outside of CR7 and Bale also have good potential.

    Current team looks like;

Vertonghen, Pieters, Evans, Zuniga and Kingsley
    Hazard, Firmino, Coutinho, Sterling, Capoue
    Aguero, Lukaku, Austin

Have 2FT, want to do Sterling or Lukaku out but wondering if I should really do that this week and maybe just use one on defence. Not sure which is more pressing.

Also out of curiosity why are people choosing Siggy over Wally?

    Antonio Valencia from GW16?

(cry, wba, SUN, MID, whu, LIV, stk, HUL)

Surely some clean sheets in there? United should do well during this run as they would want to get in the Top 4. Valencia looks the safest and most nailed option in that backline for 5.4m.

Think I might go insane this week and do:

    Aguero / Allen / Benteke > Kane / Siggy / Defoe (-8)

Will leave me with this front 8:

    Sanchez - Walcott - Mane - Siggy - Capoue
    Kane - Costa - Defoe

In this scenario, I could downgrade Sanchez to get Hazard or upgrade Walcott to Coutinho the week after, if I liked.

If there ever was a year to take hits, this is it. My only worry is Burnley's capitulation last night.

      How into hits are you?

Williams and Allen out would be my priorities, I'd probably do both for a -4. Cedric for Williams - not sure what value you'd have in Allen, what would that leave you with to spend on a 4th mid?

    Thought experiment.

Aguero & Kane sustain midweek injuries in Europe.

Who would be your go-to front 2 resultantly? I think mine would be Costa & Lukaku (Defoe 3rd spot). I know Andy's keen but for me this thought process demonstrates how far Ibra has fallen i my thinking in terms of value. Wonder if others share my valuation of Ibra.

    1. Sunny 😎
      • 11 Years
      7 years, 6 months ago

Mine would be Costa & Ibra. Can't argue with stats and Ibra has the stats. Had he got the brace he should have had against Burnley we won't be talking about this.

      1. WDT
        • 12 Years

You can argue with stats, its goals that matter by hook or by crook. United have demonstrated that possession statistics aren't as indicative of success as some would say, just of control. Forwards are offering significantly better value than Ibra, as shown by statistics.
