The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 14

And so the power shifts once again.

I can barely remember witnessing such upheaval: where we’ve had to re-consider where our big-money is spent and switch our sights, not only due to form, but simply availability.

We started the season coveting Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Then Diego Costa emerged, followed swiftly by Eden Hazard as Chelsea blossomed. Now Harry Kane, with seven goals in five, becomes a priority.

While these players battle for recognition in our squads, Sergio Aguero was considered by most as a mainstay: a factor that required little consideration.

That theory wavered back in Gameweek 3 but today’s events may have changed it for good.

Aguero had not served a suspension until this season. Now he is set to miss at least seven weeks of this campaign before the turn of the year. Few, if any, could have anticipated that.

Hours after the bombshell at the Etihad, Alexis Sanchez then provided his own explosion.

We always knew the dangers: deployed up front by Arsene Wenger, he has always been part of the heavy-hitter debate.

But, with heads turned by Chelsea’s faultless form and the promise from Eden Hazard, some, including this Fantasy manager, chose to lose Sanchez’ special talent, keeping Aguero locked into our attacks.

Now, with the City striker being ejected from squads throughout the land, the sacrifices required to gain the likes of Hazard, Costa and Marcos Alonso – all so alluring with Chelsea’s form and fixtures – no longer apply.

When I showed Sanchez the exit ahead of Gameweek 12, opting to sell Aguero was something I pondered, but quickly dismissed.

Today’s events punished that particular decision. They also force us re-examine the established thinking.

We are so set on Aguero. His place is so cemented in Fantasy Football folkore, the prospect of progressing through a season, or even a period of Gameweeks without him almost seems unthinkable.

But while a saintly Costa is scoring goals and avoiding the booking that will see him serve a one-match ban, we’ve seen Aguero inexplicably become an unreliable hothead.

We can’t begin to fathom how those roles have been reversed. We can only react to what we’ve now been dealt.

While those without Sanchez are denied the convenience of carrying out a like-for-like swap for Aguero, even with the cost of an additional transfer, it will likely prove a popular route.

Acquiring Sanchez no longer comes packaged with such sacrifice now that Aguero is out of the equation, his millions available to us.

In Gameweek 4 we formed plans to sell a suspended Aguero and bring him back two weeks later. This time around the landscape may have changed.

As of today, it seems likely that few will be forgoing Sanchez for Aguero should that decision ever arise again.

Although it’s almost folly to make such predictions in a season that refuses to allow us to settle in our thinking.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I LOVE the fact that this Aguero/Costa/Kane/Eriksen/Alexis craziness has completely blinded everyone to the fact that Brunt is God. Should stay nice and unique.

Finally some luck after five crappy gws. Took my Sanchez and Kane hits before this gw started. Still have Ibra and Mane to go and I'm hoping they do really well today just to add to the craziness and confusion about how to fit everyone into their teams.

One week Wally is the most transferred in and next he's the most transferred out eligible player.

The top FPL managers understand how fickle the real game can be, stick to the most proven / consistent point scoring players and plan transfers very carefully. It isn't an exact science, just attention to good football, fixtures and form. If you want to do well then don't change how you feel about your team every week. Sanchez was always going to score highly if you got rid of him, he's one of the best players in the league and the same can be said for Hazard, Aguero, Ibra, Costa, Coutinho, Firminho, Mane, Defoe, Sigurdsson etc and the same could be said for many defenders had clean sheets been more prevalent since GW1.

True. I considered getting Eriksen/Alli in for Coutinho but went with Can so I could monitor Kane and do straight swap Austin>Kane while keeping Aguero. I'm generally risk averse

Now that we have a bit of time before today's games and the frenzy of last night - does anyone have any thoughts on def assets?

Wba & Lei def are not performing to expectation. Obviously Schmeichel is a huge loss for Lei and Wba seem to have turned more into an attacking outfit than the defensive one we're used to. Also Mcy, once a good side for def returns are also looking weak.

Despite last nights result, Sou look solid as obviously do Che. What about Tot and Liv?

My take loosely based on recent past performance and upcoming fixtures, in terms of def returns is as follows - anyone else?

    1. Che
    2. Sou
    3. Tot
    4. Liv

I would say a chelsea & Spurs def should comtinue to deliver points - form & fixtures. If Toby were to qcome back he could be good value at 6.3... Based on the league table goals against:

      1. Spurs (10)
      2. Chelsea (11)
      3. Arsenal (14)
      4. Liverpool (14)
      5. Man City (15)
      6. Man Utd (15)

Well that's a red card if ever I saw one - how may games though? 🙂

      - You make a good point about patience below, but you can only offer advice. Whether people care to take it on board or not is up to them.

How many games will Kun miss?

Thoughts about Firmino -> Sanchez move? Or should I sacrifice Haz or Eriksen instead?

4 games but if the FA review the challenge then who knows a 5th match ban could be in order.

Really? 4 games? I watched the game and saw that incident but never thought that ban would that bad

I think violent conduct straight reds are automatic 3 game bans... Then he gets an extra game as he's already had a violent conduct ban anfew weeks ago.

          Poor Kun 🙁

No sympathy. Ban is well deserved. I don't think people realise how dangerous that is. It's not like a big hit up in rugby. Can easily cause horror leg breaks like that.

Definitely could be... his points per minute is very good. If he's guaranteed 4 games he could do very well.

Brunt has 2x lovely home games in next 6 (Swansea & Hull home) + Man Utd home not the thrat it used to. Granted the chelsea & arsenal away games look horrible, and southampton away. But he looks like he can actually return double figures without even keeping a cleansheet, for a 4.9 def that is some bargain!
