Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Champions League – Tuesday

Life without Aguero begins with a draw for City while Lucas Perez makes a strong, but possibly futile, case for himself as Arsenal romp to victory in group-winning style. Here’s what we learned from last night’s Champions League action.

Man City 1 Celtic 1

Kelechi Iheanacho (6.6) began his potentially extended turn as Sergio Aguero’s (13.0) replacement with a goal in a match otherwise lacking in definitive pointers as to how Pep Guardiola will work around the Argentinian’s four-match ban.

With the tie the deadest of rubbers, the City boss opted for a decidedly experimental line-up, starting the match with three right-backs and a number of teenagers filling various roles.

John Stones (4.9), Nicolas Otamendi (5.9), who will be suspended for Saturday’s trip to Leicester, and Aguero were all benched, while Kevin De Bruyne (10.8) and David Silva (8.7) had the night off.

The 9.4% of Fantasy Premier League managers with Ilkay Gundogan (5.4) in their sides would have wished the same fate on the German. The fact that he started suggests a reduced role for him at the weekend – Yaya Toure is, of course, available to Guardiola.

By contrast, Guardiola’s use of Pablo Zabaleta (4.7) as a holding midfielder could point to the defender being given a run as Fernadinho’s (5.4) replacement while the Brazilian serves his three-match ban.

Nolito (8.6) set up Iheanacho’s goal, which followed a Celtic opener scored by winger Patrick Roberts – on loan from City. The 19-year-old’s strike seemed appropriate on a night when Guardiola started Tosin Adarabioyo, also 19, in defence and had 16-year-old Phil Foden among his substitutes.

If they represent City’s future, Guardiola was giving nothing away about his present plans in his post-match comments on Iheanacho.

“He [Iheanacho] scored a good goal. There’s not extra pressure (with Aguero’s suspension), he has to make his job for him and for the team.”

Nolito impressed, Iheanacho scored and De Bruyne stayed at home – all three could step in to Sergio’s shoes at the King Power. Guardiola might have learned more about that topic from last night’s match, but we have given up attempting to second guess his intentions.

Having said that, Iheanacho appears to be in little doubt as to his role…

“I have a responsibility to be the striker for the team, replacing Sergio when he is not around. I have to prove myself, give my best and work hard for the team and make sure we get the wins we need.”

Man City XI: Caballero, Sagna, Maffeo (Navas 62), Adarabioyo, Clichy, Zabaleta, Fernando, Gündogan, Nolito, Iheanacho, Sané.
Subs not used: Gunn, Agüero, Stones, Otamendi, Angelino, Foden.

Basel 1 Arsenal 4

Basel had their chances, but Arsenal had better ones and took them to secure a surprise top spot in their Champions League group.

Lucas Perez (7.8) starred, scoring a hat-trick that will most likely do no more than marginally improve his position in the pecking order of an Arsenal attack enjoying an abundant early December.

The summer signing has had just 88 minutes of league action thus far, and his performance in Basel should help him see more when the Christmas schedule really bites.

But with Alexis Sanchez (11.6) starting and both Theo Walcott (8.0) and the fit-again Olivier Giroud (8.7) also featuring in Switzerland, Perez is likely to remain a bit-part player at best.

At least he now has more goals to his name, courtesy of two assists from a consistently dangerous Kieran Gibbs (4.8) and one from Sanchez. Mesut Ozil (9.6) then set up Alex Iwobi (5.8) to cap a fine display from the German.

Shkodran Mustafi (6.1) was rested, Rob Holding (4.1) deputised and Gabriel (4.8) again filled in at right back, but they could not combine to keep a clean sheet – much as Arsenal have failed to do for the past five Gameweeks in the league as well.

That was the only blight on an otherwise impressive night, although tougher tests and better goalkeepers are to come.

Having said that, aside from a Gameweek 17 trip to Man City, the Gunners have strong enough fixtures all the way to February and their offensive threat is there for all to see – they have been blanked just twice in the league all season, while scoring at least three goals on eight of the other 12 occasions.

Where Perez fits into all that remains to be seen.

Arsenal XI: Ospina, Gabriel, Holding, Koscielny, Gibbs, Ramsey (Giroud 70), Xhaka, Iwobi, Özil (Walcott 74), Pérez, Sánchez (Elneny 70).
Subs not used: Cech, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Monreal, Mustafi.

    Foster (Pickford)
    Kosc/Cedric/Cook/Holebas (McAuley)
    Hazard/Siggy/Sanchez (Capoue/Allen)
    Kane/Defoe/Austin

Have already made two transfers (kun->kane/fuchs->cedric) with one a hit.

have 3.0 in the bank and would really like to upgrade either Capoue (4.8sp) or Allen (5.0sp) but am not sure any of the available options are worth another hit.

Wally - i like him but I don’t really trust him for a hit. especially considering it would leave me with 0 itb. also it looks like lucas earned some minutes on tuesday.

Pedro - he’s a little hurt and willian scored after replacing him and may have earned some minutes

Can - was already starting and had 2 goals with 2 assists in 2 matches before coutinho got hurt. right around when cout gets back mane will be going to africa so it’s likely he’ll be starting most weeks at least through january.

    Tadic is another option.

Eriksen, Alli or possibly Firmino would be ideal but i’d have to do take an extra hit (so 3 total) and downgrade Cook (or Kosc to get Firmino). I plan on doing that at some point anyway but he plays burnley this week and with McAuley being at Chelsea it would probably be best to wait.

    Any thoughts?

I am a hammers fan and Payet might be a good shout. I haven't even considered him as we are so bad this season. With Carrol back soon he could be great. 1 goal and 9 assists so far this season isn't too bad. It isn't prolific though.

I have the same exact defence as you. Will be doing Holebas + Evans > Alonso + Cedric (-4) myself.

Don't see anything for Holebas or Amat, maybe upgrade one of them to Alonso? Will pay off long term for sure and you'll have other priorities to deal with.

Those move look tasty. I'm probably gonna hit for Alonso. Defence is poo this week. Really hard to chose which one of Evans or Holebas to lose though.

In my shoes Jazz would you move any of these defs to Cedric for a -4?

        McAuley, Smith, Pieters.

I need a good third def this week to wheel out. Currently on Alonso/Smith/Amat as my back 3 with McAuley and Pieters benched.

    Thoughts on this.

I already have costa and instead of getting hazard I am going to attempt the following.

Transfer in 2 chelsea defenders ( Alonso and Cahill/azp/luiz).

and instead of hazard in the middle il go for kdb.

My thought process is that Chelsea will keep lots of clean sheets and should come close to hazards points total.

Leaving kdb as a differential and costa cover up top.

Do people have an Aguero plan to get him back? Are you keeping 2m aside for the upgrade? Conscious that spreading the Aguero money about your team makes it difficult when he returns. Maybe not for liv but certainly want some City attack for BUR.

Alternatively are people thinking that Gabriel Jesus joining will mean that Agueros appeal drops and Gabriel Jesus is a great cheaper alternative? I can see Gabriel Jesus being fantasy gold.

Will be interesting to see what Pep is doing regarding rotation over Christmas - the Burnley game comes only 2 days after the game away to Liverpool where Aguero will surely play. He's not a sure fire starter against Burnley in my mind.

There is never enough chat on here about the sky game. We used to have the occasional post but even they have now gone which means the forum for sky chat has dissapated. I'm fortunate enough to have another outlet to chat all thingns sky but others will not.

With a few players already taking to the sky game due to no price rises, etc there could be room for a user discussion area you'd think?

I agree. I am loing the Sky game this season. How are you doing at it?

Costa for me has been key to a good season and Ramirez cap on monday was huge.

I've not had Costa all season. Currently sitting 88th. Which I'm naturally happy with.

        Sanchez captain on Saturday helped.

That is really good. I was 150 at one point then dropped back a bit. Now I am at 700 after some good captaincies last weekend. (Kane, Zlatan, Ramirez) Of course the number of transfers left is key in Sky. I spent a few last week so now have only 25 transfers left unfortunately.

25 is very good. 20 at Christmas is the unwritten rule so you're set. In fact winning the whole thing is still winthin possibilities most certainly. The transfer spenders from early on will start falling too so with gat count your actual normalised rank will be a lot higher.

I quit after about 6 weeks this year - I was doing ok but really struggling for time to devote to multiple fantasy games so I just let my teams slide. The interface is a big problem for me - some better UI/UX and I'd consider picking it back up again next season.

It started horrifically this year. Previously the interface and app was a plus. It started as a mega bag stove. It's settled down and now ok, much better than when it started.

The rule changes and indecision was also laughable but now it's going and settled it's a good game.

Yeah, I enjoyed it last year by and large although I forgot too many captaincy/transfer deadlines to really have a chance of doing as well as I'd like. I need more time in my life!

Yep. Getting into the swing of it and changing the captaincy after matchday start to the next day helps. I try and put some mental time to it per week, transfer and captain planning mainly.

Why do people take hits to bring in defenders ?
Mathematically a long term losing play

      I don't agree.
A -4 to get rid of someone like Williams for Alonso could yield instant returns this week, and long term, Alonso is very likely to outscore Williams by 4 points.
Also, price rises. It may be that a -4 now saves you .2/.3 or you may be priced out if you wait.

Ha, just made the same Alonso esque point. 🙂

I'd say the same for a Spurs defender. A hit for one of those bad boys early on would have proved highly profitable long term.

      Depends on the defender.

I took a hit to get Alonso in for Fuchs last week. I'm 2pt in profit in one week. How many more points will Alonso get over Fuchs in the long term too. I'll wager plenty more.

i took a hit for Fuchs to Van Dijk and although i lost out on 3 points, there's no contest as to who is going to score more points in the next couple of games in my view.

Exactly. Hits are viable for a select few defenders

taking a hit to bring in Alonso would represent an average of 40 place drop in OR for me which would be substantial.

If the squad is good enough the hit is not worth it, taking into consideration that you can still afford the player the next game week after potential price rise

I see the point the people are making that long term you will make those 4 points back and gain many more points and you might be priced out of the move hence making the hit worth it

Depends on who it is, really. and I'd have thought that long-term success is more likely than short-term.

not necessarily. For example, Alonso is currently averaging over 6 points per game and has excellent fixtures. You could expect that spending 4 points to swap a defender who is averaging say 3 points per game for alonso would pay for itself within two weeks.

I am not a big fan of hits, especially not for defenders. But saying it is a long term losing play is not necessarily true.

How is it? Short term it can be either a loss or a win of a clean sheet or attacking returns happen. Long term it can easily be a big gain. Eg I swapped Kinglsey for Alonso minus 4 and I expect it will cover itself in two weeks at worst

Have to meet 3 conditions for me to take a hit on a defender

      1. Bringing them in to fund a better transfer elsewhere
      2. Getting rid of deadwood.
      3. They have a decent mid term fixture list (so will be played)

If you are keeping the defenders for a couple of weeks and constantly chopping and changing your backline then sure, it isn't a great idea.

Getting Alonso in for Williams for a hit and keeping Alonso(fitness permitting) for the rest of the season is a no brainer.

Alonso will be scoring a lot more than 4 more points than Williams until May

took a hit to get Fuchs out.
      Part rage transfer part funds.

Leicester don't seem to have a CS in them.

      Brought in Cedric - 2 games net 5 pts + .5m itb.
If I had kept Fuchs 0 pts. If played 4th or 5th defender A.Smith 2pts or Amat -1pt.

Regardless of hits there's no point having a 5.4m defender sitting on the bench.

If you look at my team (342877) you'll see I'm not a particular fan of investing heavily into defence especially in the first part of the season.

Attacking returns for defenders are extremely overrated in my eyes. I'd much rather have a strong front 7 than a balanced squad at the beginning of the season.

Christmas time and 2nd part of the season is extremely different i must say

When is it generally a good time to go AOA. I want to do it this week with this team:

    Good idea or not?

    Cech - (Pickford)

Cedric - Lovren (Walker - Fuchs - Evans)

    Siggy - Capoue - Firminho - Sanchez (C) - Redmond

    Austin - Costa - Kane

Good to go AOA or not ?

    Thanks in advance

Fixtures for both are mixed. But Pieters is playing as a wing back, so attacking returns are (slightly) more likely imo

    Pickford Jakupovic
    Alonso Cedric Holebas Amat Love
Sanchez Hazard Firmino Siggy De Roon
    Costa Kane Austin

    0.1 itb

Happy with the first 11 but worried about lack of flexibility during the Xmas period. Siggy is the only viable person to downgrade in order to upgrade my bench.

I think you'll be okay as long as Pickford plays. Your starters aren't rotation prone.

For safety, if you downgrade Holebas at any point to a 4.5 then Love > Ake should be doable. Low priority though.

    Heaton/Jakupovic

    Alonso - Cedric - Lovren - Pieters - Amat

Hazard - Firmino - Sigurdsson - Walcott - De roon

    Costa - Kane - Austin

    2.4 ITB

Heaton, Alonso, Firmino and Costa is not going anywhere.
