Scout Notes – Europa League – Thursday

Mkhitaryan shines as United cruise through but Austin is injured and Southampton crash out as the final round of Europa League group matches give and take in equal measure. Here’s how it all panned out…

Zorya Luhansk 0 Manchester United 2

Goals from Henrikh Mkhitaryan (8.9) and Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.2) saw United safely through to the knock out stages of the Europa League.

Jose Mourinho’s men controlled the match but had to wait until the second half for the goals to come.

Mkhitaryan gave them the lead with a fine individual effort – his first for the club – before Paul Pogba (8.2) released Ibrahimovic to secure the victory.

Mourinho was fulsome in his praise of Mkhitaryan post-match.

“He has a strong mentality. He was very determined to fight against his difficult adaptation, and he’s doing that in the best way….He fought to improve tactically, he fought to improve physically, and now he is playing good in the Premier League, good in the Europa League and the EFL Cup, and now evolving a bit more happiness for him, so I’m very pleased.”

The midfielder is currently in just 1.7% of Fantasy Premier League squads. If his form is starting to make him a consistently likely starter, United’s fixtures will only add to his allure – after a Sunday match against Spurs, the Red Devils will host Sunderland and Middlesbrough and travel to Palace, West Brom and West Ham before the FA Cup third round in early January.

Mourinho made five changes from the team that drew with Everton, with defender Eric Bailly (5.3), making his first appearance since suffering a knee injury in October.

The Ivorian’s return was impressive, though his manager was quick to remind us that he’s set to depart for international duties with Ivory Coast next month:

“Phi Jones and Marcos Rojo did five great matches for us in a row playing well and solid. To have Eric back we know he goes to the Africa Cup of Nations in a couple of weeks, but in this busy period to have him is a good protection for us.”

Three starters against Everton – Michael Carrick (4.3), Antonio Valencia (5.4) and Matteo Darmian (5.0) – didn’t even make the trip to Ukraine.

United will play their Round of 32 tie between Gameweek 25 (home to Watford) and Gameweek 26’s Manchester derby. How Mourinho juggles
his squad for that latter match will be a particularly interesting issue further down the line.

Manchester United XI: Romero, Young, Bailly, Rojo, Blind, Herrera, Pogba, Mata (Lingard 65), Rooney (Fellaini 70), Mkhitaryan (Fosu-Mensah 84), Ibrahimovic.
Subs not used: De Gea, Jones, Martial, Rashford.

Southampton 1 Hapoel Be’er Sheva 1

Southampton bowed out of the Europa League with a whimper and an injury to leading scorer Charlie Austin (6.9).

The qualification equation was simple enough – stop their Israeli visitors from scoring and a place in the Round of 32 would be assured.

When Hapoel did score, from their one and only shot on target, the Saints suddenly needed to win the tie and were left just 12 minutes to do it.

A Virgil van Dijk (5.6) equaliser in the first minute of time added on gave them a brief flicker of hope, but the listless Saints were not up to the task.

An earlier injury to Austin added to the insult of defeat. The striker fell heavily following an aerial challenge and aggravated a long-standing shoulder issue. Despite telling the medical staff he was all right, Austin was clearly in pain and had to be replaced by Shane Long (6.1).

With Southampton embarking on a three-match run in seven days at the weekend, the historically fragile forward looks likely to struggle to play his part – a major blow to his 17.4% ownership base, and particularly those already having to react to the four-match ban for fellow striker Sergio Aguero (12.9).

Speaking post-match, coach Claude Puel confirmed that the striker would be ruled out of Sunday’s visit of Middlesbrough.

“Charlie has a shoulder injury and we will see this. I don’t know how many times he stays out but it’s important for us…I don’t know but he cannot play for the next game of course…We will assess him in the next few days.”

Austin’s shoulder is a known weak point, having been cursed by injuries in that area throughout his career. Given that record, the fear is that the striker could now be facing a prolonged period on the sidelines – certainly, Southampton are unlikely to take any risks regarding his return date.

Puel is set to face the press this morning at 11.30 when we are likely to get a fresh opinion on Austin’s situation.

Requiring just a 0-0 stalemate to progress, the Southampton boss fielded his strongest side of the European campaign, making only three changes from the team humbled by Crystal Palace on Saturday.

He must have been ruing that decision with Austin’s departure, although the second half return to action of Dusan Tadic (7.0) following a three-match lay-off sweetened an otherwise decidedly bitter pill.

Tadic will now challenge for a starting role against Middlesbrough, with Nathan Redmond potentially shifting to a central role. Shane Long (£6.1m) is perhaps the more natural replacement for Austin, however.

The Saints are not in the best of shape at the moment, with just one win and five points from their last six league matches.

A fine run of fixtures now awaits, but the potential loss of Austin and the morale-sapping nature of their European exit is hardly the ideal preparation.

Southampton XI: Forster, Cedric, van Dijk, Yoshida, Bertrand, Davis, Romeu, Højbjerg (Ward-Prowse 82), Redmond, Sims (Tadic 59), Austin (Long 39).
Subs not used: Lewis, Fonte, McQueen, Clasie.

    (A) Ihenacho
    (B) Anchibe
    (C) Origi

What do we reckon game times are? Who to get?

      Between A or C.

Pep is a maniac and could easily go with KDB false 9 or something but I think he'll be ok.

Origi should also be nailed over Sturridge, I think.

      Anichebe, meh.

A is slightly less risky than C in my head. B is safe and perhaps nearly as good value, but of course, less chance of points

Good to go for the weekend?

    Heaton
    Lovren - Alonso - Holebas
    Firmino - San(C)hez - Hazard - Firmino
    Benteke - Anichebe - Costa

    Robinson - Allen - Evans - Pieters

Thinking Allen -> Son before next round.

On all set pieces, plays false 9, heart of the team.

    I have a team of:
    Courtois / Grant
    Alonso / Cedric / McAuley / Pieters / Holebas
    Sanchez / Haz / Mane / Lallana / Allen
    Kane / Nacho / Anichebe

    1.5 itb

I am thinking of doing Mane to Payet for GW16 and then Payet to Mkhitarian for GW18,

Is this a good idea or should I just go straight to Mkhi? Or even hold Mane until 18?

I was only really looking at how to afford Mkhi in and seen the Burnley and Hull, both at home and it triggered something in me. Andy Carroll gives me hope of assists if fit.

Mkhi is class and I am confused about why Mourinho has only just started giving him minutes (even with all the talk of him adapting, he could have learnt on the job), If he is playing then I might keep him for the season

Probably won't be going anywhere near United assets apart from De Gea until they show any form of consistency.

Mkhitaryan is good but I don't think he's as much of a fantasy asset as Payet, though I will definitely keep an eye on him.

Already on -4 with this lot, anything else worth a hit ?

    Cech
    Lovren Williams Holebas Amat
    San(c)hez Hazard Siggy
    Ibra Kane Iheanacho
    (Pickford Allen De Roon Nyom)

    A) Williams -> Alonso (-4)

Very good point, but as a Liverpool fan I would much rather see lallana as a straight swap in for wijnaldum as for me he offers nothing to out team, Agree that roberto is more influential in the middle but i think origi on current form deserves the start. D) anything better that I haven't seen?

    Thanks

Think I've talked myself into not only getting Iheanacho in but (C) him.

    As I posted here:

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2016/12/09/scout-notes-europa-league-thursday-4/?hc_page=3#hc_comment_14594372

Over the last 2 seasons Iheanacho has been involved in a Goal (Goal or Assist) every 61 mins. This season it's every 38 mins.

I'm already 150 points behind my Mini League leader so these are the risks I need to take.

The last 4 games of last season he played:

    90 mins - 2 Goals, 1 Assist
    90 mins - 2 Goals
    71 mins - Blank
    72 mins - 1 Goal

This season when Aguero was out he played 2 Games of:

    53 mins - 1 Goal, 1 Assist
    90 mins - 1 Goal, 1 Assist

Leicester have conceded 4 to Liverpool, 4 to Man U & 3 to Chelsea this year.

Did he start all those games?

In any case, it makes a compelling argument.

Some great information there... really tempting me to bring him in, although handing him the armband might be a stretch!

Something to say about that record, even if he doesn't start every game.

I think these decisions prove how you are 150 points behind your ML leader?

Think I've been too conservative this year, so exact opposite really.

To anyone replacing Austin, especially those taking a hit. Make sure to really consider which options are nailed on over a very busy fixture list. Players from teams who don't really have any other strikers available or are very reliant on their goals (the likes of Defoe) may well prove much better buys than players like Origi or Iheanacho, who could score when they play, but could face bench time too. Game time is the most important factor over busy periods imo, last thing you need is a no show.

For example, Man City play 3 games in the next 8 days. Can you be certain someone like Pep won't rotate?

Origi and Iheanacho actually fall under the 'teams who don't really have any other strikers available' category 😛

Strange, I'm sure a guy by the name of Firmino or something like that has started most matches up top for Pool?! Could be these old hallucinations acting up again.

De Bruyne has never played false 9 for City, right? 😉

I was being pedantic. You didn't mention the false 9ers 😛

Merely saying that they have plentiful options 😛

Damn guys I took the risk with the early transfers and now Austin is injured and I've already a -8 staring at me? What to do ? Please help me out my head is wrecked!

    My bench is:

    Phillips, Vertonghen, Amat

Should I just go to my bench, take the likely price drops and avoid another hit?
Or splurge the -4 and get in someone. Origi?

    Thoughts appreciated

Id you dont mind losing some money play the bench. If youre bold -16 and get Defoe or Nacho.

Is a total of -16 bad so far? Heres the breakdown currently in the 120k.

    -4 GW 7
    -8 GW 13
    - 4 this week

Austin for nacho? Currently on a -8 so -12 would hurt me quite a bit as I don't like hits but my replacement for Austin in the team would have to be de roon

look at hits in isolation of ones already taken.
it's -4 to get rid of Austin for Nacho, not -12. Have a look at others who have asked the question as this is a real hot topic (literally) atm 🙂

In my view, Nacho will more than pay back the 4 points over the next 4 gameweeks, however it could end up being a headache when Aguero is back. As Andy has pointed out, it could even be another -4 to take him out again.

Trouble is, there's no standout options sub 7.0. Therefore, he's probaby the best of the bunch, with decent short term fixtures and a real eye for goal.

May as well pay those 4 points for an extra 25% gametime
