Moving Target

Moving Target – Lazar Markovic

Having already brought in Oumar Niasse and Omar Elabdellaoui on loan, signed Evandro from Porto and made Markus Henriksen’s loan move a permanent one, Hull City made their fifth capture of the January transfer window on Monday by completing a deal for Liverpool midfielder Lazar Markovic on loan until the end of the season.

The 22-year-old spent the first half of the season on loan at Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon, with a lack of first-team football leading to his arrival at the KCOM Stadium.

Discussing his move with the local press, the winger is determined to prove the doubters wrong after struggling to settle on Merseyside:

“I hope that my actions will speak louder than words and I can prove myself to the club and to everyone in English football. I joined Liverpool when I was very young and have not yet had a long run in the side to show people what I am capable of. I hope to use this loan spell with City to prove myself in the best league in the world because I feel there is lots more to come from me.”

The History

Markovic joined the youth set-up at Partizan Belgrade aged 12, and progressed through the ranks to make his senior debut in May 2011.

The following summer, the winger signed his first professional contract with Partizan – a five-year deal – and quickly established himself as a first-team regular during the 2011/12 campaign, making 26 league appearances, which yielded six goals and six assists.

Markovic’s career trajectory continued in an upward direction, with seven goals and seven assists in 19 league matches in the following season.

Those performances put him on the radars of many European clubs, but it was Benfica who secured his signature ahead of the 2013/14 campaign.

Markovic’s one year in Portugal was a success, with the midfielder totalling five goals and five assists from 26 league appearances, while he also gained further European experience in both the Champions League and the Europa League.

In the summer of 2014, Liverpool stumped up £20 million to bring Markovic to Anfield, seeing off competition from the likes of Chelsea.

He struggled to establish himself as a regular starter, though, and only made 19 league appearances in 2014/15, registering just two goals and one assist, before being sent out on loan to Turkish side Fenerbahce for the 2015/16 campaign.

Markovic featured in 14 league matches for Fenerbahce, registering two assists, before his season was cut short by a hamstring injury.

Jurgen Klopp decided to send Markovic out on loan to Sporting Lisbon last summer, but after only making two league starts, the winger now finds himself heading to Hull for a third loan spell in just 18 months.

After representing Serbia at U17 and U21 levels, Markovic made his senior debut against Armenia in February 2012.

He has made 22 appearances for his country, scoring three goals.

The Prospects

While new Hull head coach Marco Silva was forced to use a 3-4-2-1 against Chelsea last weekend, the Portuguese manager is known to favour a 4-2-3-1, but until this point, has lacked the attacking midfield options – particularly after Henriksen picked up a serious shoulder injury – to adopt that formation.

But the signing of Markovic should help Silva turn to his preferred system, with the Serbian set to emerge as a regular starter for the Tigers.

Markovic’s career has stagnated over recent seasons, though, and it make take a few run-outs for the winger to firstly get his match fitness up to scratch, and then to restore the confidence that has been missing from his game since moving to England in 2014.

The 22-year-old was known for his blistering pace during his formative years, and Turkish sports magazine Fanatik aptly described Markovic as “Our Usain Bolt” upon his arrival in Turkey.

Injuries may have taken their toll but Markovic still possesses plenty of speed, and should still be able to deliver an end product via his natural dribbling and ability to play incisive through balls.

The final pass has been an issue for Markovic in recent years, but he’s still only 22, and a run of matches could help restore some confidence, and realise some of his untapped potential.

Silva has already begun transforming Hull into more of a counter-attacking side, with the 3-1 victory over Bournemouth conjured from just 39% possession.

Markovic could be perfectly suited in that sense, with his ability to transition quickly likely to be an important asset.

The Serbian is comfortable playing on either flank, and could offer a contrasting weapon to Robert Snodgrass, who is often more reliant on the quality of his final ball.

As we know from today’s news on Burnley’s accepted bid and Middlesbrough’s rival interest, Snodgrass looks poised to leave the club. Markovic is surely earmarked to help fill the void left by the Scot’s departure.

However, given his struggles over the past few years, there will be immediate doubts on Markovic’s ability to compensate for the loss of Snodgrass.

One issue that surfaced during his spell at Liverpool was his failure to adjust to the physical demands of the Premier League. In a Hull relegation battle, he’s certainly going to have to step up to the mark in that respect.

Markovic is priced at 5.4 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), and is very unlikely to be considered until Hull’s testing fixture pass (mun, LIV, ars) and while there are still doubts surrounding his sharpness.

In addition, Silva intends to make further additions to his squad, with the possible funds from Snodgrass’ sale likely to be targeted at the midfield. The Tigers will surely need an additional schemer to make the difference in the final third.

In essence, it’s a case of wait and see as to whether Markovic can make the difference, although the early signs under Silva have certainly been encouraging.

Should Hull maintain their recent level of performance over the next few weeks, then the improved schedule from Gameweek 26 may well afford them the platform to supply us with a viable Fantasy asset with Markovic perhaps emerging as a factor.

    Mannone xx
    Alonso Jones* Evans Pieters xx
Sanchez Mkhi* Cout Alli De Roon
    Kane Ibra* Barnes

With United and Arsenal likely blanking in 28 as well, holding Sanchez and Ibra could be a decision to make. Sanchez has a tough GW27. His value will definitely go down. If i sell Alexis, means i can afford a Barnes -> Kaku upgrade.

A lot of enablers like are going to come into play as 5th mid, 5th defender, 2nd keeper.

      Good plan
      Jones to coleman/baines soon ..

I'd have a plan b if you want to keep sanchez (carroll for barnes if he keeps scoring and mkhi to barks if he shows some form)

      Evans/pieters to brunt too

Get Heaton. He has Leicester away. U mentioned blanks, then need to start addressing it now. Or sell Aguero for Kane. He is also expected to have a blank. But from what I read here, Burnley do not have a blank. Rest is upto u.

I checked out his stats yesterday - they're off the scale, the only thing lacking is his goal conversion rate which is absurdly (i.e. unsustainably) low. It's a bit like when Ibrahimovic was peppering the goal without scoring - at some point they start going in. Unless they don't of course - then I look really stupid 😉

His goal conversion rate is probably why Man utd's as a whole is so poor!!
Just his stats seem to suggest he's a bit like Coutinho last year an awful lot of unsuccessful shots from outside the box which bumps his goal attempts stats.
At least Ibra's attempts were inside the box.

Needs to be submitted by someone as a community article, ideally the author! I'm pretty sure Ben Crellin is Perchino but he hasn't posted for ages. Not sure what the policy would be on having it submitted by a third party, would maybe need to ask Jonty about that.

Worth noting that the spreadsheet gets updated every time a match is played that affects things so the article would only be useful for a short time. Once the blanks are a bit clearer I expect someone will submit something - they always do 🙂

Very surprised at people considering selling Sanchez. He blanks 26, surely bench can sort that out. Not sure many will have a full team in 28, I personally don't think having 11 players is wise considering the team you will have after. Much more players a lot less essential than Sanchez that have 2 blanks: Cech, Bellerin, Giroud, Jones, Pogba, Kun, Sterling. Definetly deadweight if they have 2 blanks.

I think it'll be the potential of him and Ibra meaning you will have a 30M+ bench that will cause the sales. But if you can live with that then why not?

"I personally don't think having 11 players is wise". Completely disagree, although we don't know the outrun yet.

We'll know more on Monday night but if the likes of Pool, City, United, Spurs and Arsenal are gonna be out for 28, then having 11 players can't be a huge advantage in the week's to follow

One hypothetical: if average can only get say 4/5 players out that's almost an extra dgw potential with the right players (and results). Then assuming enough info is known, play wc as soon as necessary from gw29 onwards to attain same squad + frees as wc'ing later.

There's a very good chance that the optimum strategy doesn't involve 11 squad members playing in GW28. Those who are playing in 28 don't have very good fixtures on both sides. But you're right - we need to wait and see what all the fixtures are before we can really form any conclusions.

I'm looking at it now myself, just can't see many having a full 11 for 28 and dont even think it's worth it.

I'm planning now, outside of Brunt, Phillips, Antonio, Coleman/Baines, Lukaku and Stanislas, is there really anyone else you'll be scared of not owning or want to carry between GW26 and GW28?

Sanchez and Ibra will be benched, both may have double doubles and I'm not paying more to bring either back.

Looking at these players, maybe Siggy instead of Antonio and McAuley. Playing 352 so gonna do Campbell to Stuani also. Hoping to have 10 players if Boro and Hull get eliminated

                      Pickford (should be back)
                      Coleman Brunt McAuley Friend
                      Stan Siggy Phillips
                      Stuani and Lukaku

                      Heaton Kane Alli/Erik Sanchez Alonso

Will have 2 ft's into 29 to patch it up again in preparation for any double gw's in 34 and wc in 37. Early planning and a lot could change but it's better than no plan

GW 26 blank now looking like City, Southampton, Arsenal and Utd not playing. I have 3 Arsenal and 3 Utd so will use my transfers to rectify this - benching both Sanchez and Ibra for the blank! However, FA Cup games this weekend will give me a better idea on who to replace them with giving the GW 28 blank too. At the moment Everton, WBA and West Ham assets looking appealing. Boro and Swansea may come into the mix though.

As pool fan its obvious that the players are tired, too many touches and indecisive at crucial moments when we never used to be but to say Origi has been a disappointment since Coutninhos injury is an understatement. I really though this was his chance to show how he's progressed but you could even argue now he's gone backwards. At his worst I really am reminded of Djibril Cisse

"As a 'pool fan its obvious that the players are tired"...

Liverpool have played 30 games so far this season. As of tonight United will have played 35 and their players don't look tired.

Perhaps it is that Klopp's pressing style is unsustainable in the PL.

rotation at United though ? id like to see a stat for how often Jose has kept the same side two games in a row and in fairness at this moment in time United are still outside the top four (but i reckon not for much longer)

No rotation at Liverpool? If Klopp didn't play such a weak team in the FA Cup then Liverpool would be on 29 games, not 30.

Really that is not a high number for a team that wants to be playing European football.

you can argue utd rotation is more about Jose trying to find his best side rather than anything particularly fitness related.

don't really see a lot of rotation at Chelsea. Not hurting them so much.

And Spurs will have played 32. Don't see us complaining

not really a complaint , more an observation. Spurs and united have all gone through bad patches this season at much earlier stages than liverpool

it's this pressing style that has found them out.
Keep seeing stats about how they are running 1-2km/player/match more than other sides. That's great if your players are fit enough and athletic enough to do it.
Much like Pep you have to wonder whether Klopp has brought his style into Prem without fully factoring in what a whole season of PL football entails. Pace & physicality of PL means you can't have an off week/ tired week or teams will punish you. They need to look at Arsenal and see how often they've come undone at crucial moments by making the same mistake (off weeks against weaker sides).

Yep. "Rock 'n' Roll Football" maybe only works with a winter break. 😕

Germany have an 18-team league (4 less games) and only one Cup. Plus a winter break of course. Quite a different proposition.

...in addition to which they were beaten last night by a team that has had the fixture schedule from hell and has also played 4 more games. And has just lost their 1st choice CB pair.

Southampton didn't look tired. So you have to ask why Liverpool do.

other reason they lost last night is that unless all your players are pressing too easy for sides to pass their way out of trouble. Sturridge leaves big gaps in the middle by not working like the other front players do. Doesn't matter if Firmino etc. are pressing the defence if there is an easy outball to the defenders Sturridge should be pressing.

Who do I bench this gameweek?

                  Grant / Manonne
                  Bellerin / Alonso / McAuley / Yoshida / Amat

“Walcott back in the squad and of course we lose Xhaka who is suspended. Good news is that Mertesacker & Debuchy back in full training tomorrow. I have not decided yet completely who will play and not play.”

                    Asset stripping.

Allam hasn't forgiven the fans for blocking the "Hull Tigers" project. He can't sell so he's taking his cash out in other ways. That's why Bruce left, isn't it?

gotta hope for Hull fans's sake this isn't a scenario like Blackpool's with owners taking money out of the club.
