Scout Notes

Scout Notes – FA Cup – Sunday

There’s one alarm but no surprises as another two Premier League teams navigate themselves into the last eight of the FA Cup – and out of Gameweek 28.

And yesterday evening’s quarter-final draw gives us a first indication of who might be facing yet further postponements, this time involving Gameweek 34.

Fulham 0 Tottenham Hotspur 3

A Harry Kane hat-trick secured Spurs only their third win in 17 away matches as Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to field a strong side paid dividends at Fulham.

Having scored just once in his last five matches in all competitions, Kane’s treble was a welcome return to form for his 19.0% owners, although he and team-mates Dele Alli (who assisted Kane’s third) and Christian Eriksen (who teed up Kane’s first two goals) all sit in the top ten for transfers-out this week.

And the confirmation that Spurs will now miss a Gameweek 28 trip to Crystal Palace is unlikely to stem that particular tide.

The trio all played at Craven Cottage. The club’s most popular Fantasy Premier League asset, Kyle Walker (36.4%), did not, although the defence was boosted by the return from injury of Jan Vertonghen as coach Mauricio Pochettino continued with a flat back four in the ongoing absence of Danny Rose.

The consistent sales of Spurs assets seem to reflect concerns over their recent poor form as much as anything – they have an attractive schedule all the way through to the end of April, even with the forthcoming Palace blank factored in.

But with advancement in the Europa League still a strong possibility, Pochettino’s already stretched squad will be sorely tested by potential fixture pile-ups as the season reaches its climax.

Spurs have been handed a home tie with Millwall for the quarter-finals. They would be expected to win that, meaning that their Gameweek 34 trip to Leicester City would have to be rescheduled to make way for a possible semi-final, thus adding to the late-season demands on the squad.

It’s likely that the Leicester fixture will remain in Gameweek 34, shifting to the free midweek slot, however, with Spurs Gameweek 28 postponed fixture with Crystal Palace perhaps more likely to be assigned to Gameweek 37.

Spurs XI: Vorm, Trippier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies, Winks (Dembele 79), Wanyama, Son, Alli (Onomah 86), Eriksen, Kane (Sissoko 75).
Subs not used: Janssen, Wimmer, Pau Lopez, Carter-Vickers.

Blackburn 1 Manchester United 2

A battling Blackburn took the lead and consistently troubled a strong Manchester United outfit, who finally saw off their hosts through goals from Marcus Rashford and substitute Zlatan Ibrahimovic, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba supplying the assists.

The 39.3% of Fantasy managers who still own Ibrahimovic must have been particularly delighted to see their man scoring four goals in the last two (non-FPL) matches – he’s taken the past eight fixtures to manage that haul in the league.

Small wonder then that the Swede is the second-most sold player this week, with more than 100,000 managers releasing him ahead of United’s Gameweek 26 blank as they face Southampton in the EFL Cup final.

With a Gameweek 28 fixture – again involving the Saints – now also postponed, that exodus is likely to gather pace. Team-mates Pogba and the injured Phil Jones also find themselves in the top 30 for transfers-out.

United’s squad is arguably the strongest in the Premier League, which is just as well as the club are still in all three domestic competitions and highly likely to progress to the Round of 16 in the Europa League.

Their immediate league schedule is a kindly one, but two blanks in the next three Gameweeks and the promise of some serious fixture congestion to come could compromise the lure of their key assets.

The quarter-final draw at least adds another layer of intrigue for Fantasy managers.

United will travel to Chelsea, meaning a guaranteed Gameweek 34 postponement for one of that pair, with the Red Devils due to visit Burnley, while the Blues are meant to be entertaining Southampton. Again, those fixtures may remain in Gameweek 34 and shifted to the vacant midweek slot.

Manchester United XI: Romero, Young, Smalling, Rojo, Darmian, Carrick, Herrera, Lingard (Pogba 62), Mkhitaryan, Martial (Ibrahimovic 62), Rashford (Mata 89).
Subs not used: Henderson, Bailly, Shaw, Schweinsteiger.

* The rest of the quarter-final draw involves Middlesbrough at home to either Manchester City or Huddersfield and Arsenal, should they beat Sutton United tonight, at home to Lincoln City.

That could force the rescheduling of following Gameweek 34 fixtures: Arsenal v Sunderland; Bournemouth v Middlesbrough and Man City v West Brom. Although, as mentioned, those fixtures could remain in the Gameweek 34 midweek slot.

Okay presently the lot looks like this

    Grant Pickford
    Azpi Alonso Walker Coleman Amat*
    Phillips Deroon Alli Eriksen Sanchez*
    Caroll Benteke Ibra*

    2FT 1.6itb

    Should I do

    A) Grant & Amat > Jaku & Mag/Robertson (play 5-3-2)
    B) Ibra & Grant > Lukaku & Jaku (4-3-3)
    C) Benteke & Erik/Alli & Amat > Lukaku & Lallana & hull def -4 play 5-3-2
    D) Sanchez & benteke > Pool mid & Lukaku (4-4-2)
    E) something else

    A & C let's me keep Sanchez and Ibra

Will definitely wait till after Europa League but would love some thoughts on this... Thanks in advance

Just because it's 'must win' it doesn't mean that they will win. Would you rather have Benteke (MID) over Lukaku (SUN)? Who would you rather captain? Also factor in GW28 - Liverpool and Lukaku both play.

If a team get blank in 26, 28 and 34 (FA cup semi), what dates is it possible that the 3rd postponed game will be put? (One April 25/26 and one May 16/17)

They could have a triple game week 37, or ask UEFA to play the game the same day as a Champions League match.

Yes - guy is explosive - not in terms of movement, just in terms of popping up in the right place at the right time and putting it in the net. In a way that Costa and Ibra (at least in this Utd team) are not.

Assuming I do Sanchez to Mane tonight I'll have 1ft left and this team for GW26:

    Heaton
    Alonso, Holebas, Evans
    Hazard, Mane, Eriksen, Phillips, Fletcher
    Costa, Carroll

    Pickford, Mawson, Holgate, Ibra

Should I do Ibra to Lukaku this week or just bench Ibra to captain next week then sell?

Trying to plan for GW 29 and bringing Sanchez back in, but it's proving a bit messy. Current team is:

    Foster (Pickford)
    Alonso, Coleman, Valencia**, Cedric**, Amat**
Eriksen, Alli, Phillips, De Roon, Sanchez**
    Defoe, Lukaku, Ibra**

    2FT, 0.6 ITB.

GW 26: Sanchez > Mane, Cedric to Brunt.
    GW 27: Hold FT.
GW 28: Alli > Snodgrass, De Roon > T. Carroll.

That's if all goes to plan. 8 GW 28 players is pretty average at this point, so I'm aiming to have a strong squad around those fixtures to hopefully gain a bit of ground.

With that in mind, is it worth budgeting to bring Sanchez in GW 29, i.e. with Cedric to Robertson instead of Brunt, thus avoiding hits and not having to downgrade Valencia/Coleman/Defoe further down the line? Or is it better to damn the consequences and figure it out further down the line?

deRoon to Carroll is a waste of trade. I'd prefer going into 29 with 2ft than use it on that.

Fair point. It might be of more use shipping out Amat for another Swansea/Hull defender. All boring transfers though.

I'm just stuck between having plan and budget for bringing Sanchez back in, or focusing on getting the best players out of the blanks. It's easy to get caught up with fixating on events way in the future.

I have a transfer to kill (2ft) so time to replace Amat.. Other 4 are Alonso, Walker, Coleman and Robertson.. 0.9 itb.. Candidates are:

    A) Fernandez, SWA (4.2) - Cheapest playing def, almost ideal for 5th def..

    B) Mawson, SWA (4.5) - Very decent goal threat.. Only issue is, until my next WC (probably gw33), every time I'll be 0.1-0.3 short on my transfer target ill look to downgrade him.. Seems like transfer waiting to happen..

    C) Funes More, EVE (4.7) - Decent goal threat, very decent CS potential.. Same issue as Mawson plus is it OK to bench 4.7 def most weeks since I'll primarily play my 3 big hitters..

    Any advice appreciated.. Thanx..

I'm looking at doing Sanchez, Defoe and Pieters to Firmino, Lukaku and defender. I see that as 3 hits for 1.33 points each ; )

A or B, probably A as it'll set you up nicer.

Think about it mate. -12 for getting players that may not benefit you over a few gameweeks is dangerous. I take hits but only if I see future benefits and not over a couple of Gw's. Then you will have to get them back probably resulting in another 8 to 12 points.

Yes but there are more than a few problems in my team. Like to see your approach to it if you don't mind.

        Alonso Coleman Pieters Evans Lenihan

I'd be tempted to keep Ibra and Sanchez if you can and are planning a GW36 WC - if you are going to be short for GW28, you are better off having players not playing who have the extra pre-GW37 DGW later on than players who are likely just to have the GW37 DGW.

It is, but I suppose the crunch is what your aims are - do you want to take the safer option and make your team/strategy more template (probably losing a few points in the process potentially to rivals due to the hits), or do you want to go balls out and try something a bit different to everyone else that could well be catastrophic, but could be genius.

Every year I plan this and then fret over them getting rested anyway.

          I see what you mean:
Keep the obvious choices of players playing in GW 26 and 28.
Any tfrs should be for both games.
Playing 10 in gw 26 and 8 in GW 28 is not a train smash.
Keep the players that will lose you most money.

A Mikhi to Mane or of similar ilk (Antonio etc)
B Bring in 2 defenders and a keeper playing GW 28 and play 5 3 2 without too much cost to your long term aims.
C Choose one of Sanchez Ibra if you have to for GW 28 player but I would not in your situation.

I did De Roon Siggy and have 8 forwards. It makes it easier to fix later.

    Kane or Ibra -> Lukaku?

Got a lot more value tied up in Ibra, but Kane could well punish me.

Kane if you can still field an 11 this GW, Ibra's a great GW27 captaincy option.

    Jakupovic
    Alonso Baines Brunt Friend (!)
    Mane Alli Sigurdsson Phillips
    Kane (C) Lukaku

    Randolph T. Carroll Browning (!) Ibrahmovic (!)

    3.5 ITB 0FT

    A) Browning/Friend -> Maguire (-4) so I don't have to play Friend

    B) AOA with T. Carroll (che)

    C) Something else.

    Cheers in advance.

3.9 Everton defender on loan at Preston. He has been in my team for far far too long.

Hi PP. Browning > Maguire looks good, even if it does mean double Hull.

Keep Friend for Boro's likely DGW 34.

Stoke away to the big teams recently:

    Arsenal 3-1
    Liverpool 4-1
    Chelsea 4-1

Makes Kane pretty tempting as captain

I'm on Kane - but will see how Europa game goes - if he plays full 90 or even 120 in that game I might take it off him as he'll surely be shattered

I forgot about Europa. That could be a deal breaker for sure. Maybe Costa is the way to go as he has a nice rest

Afternoon people. After some advice please. 1FT & 0.5m ITB. Thanks all

    Heaton
    Luiz - Nyom - Baines
    Sanchez - Antonio - Alli - Siggy
    Ibra - Costa - Lukaku

    Mawson - Chambers - DeRoon

    A) Stick (have 12 playing)
    B) Sell Sanchez > Haz or Mane (PP was 11.0m)
    C) Sell Ibra > Kane (PP was 11.2m)
    D) Anything else?

I think Mane this week and next week can be a good point earner - Sanchez would get back in GW28

    G2G or use free transfer?

    Heaton
    Alonso Brunt Coleman Holebas
    Siggy Snodgrass Hazard
    Rondon Lukaku Kane ©

    Valdes Carroll Holgate Sanchez

    1FT, 0.8 in bank

Want to save it really, as got a much better team about that some people this week with no hits, but tempted by Sanchez to Mane and benching Holebas

    Thoughts?

    Need some advice guys
    I’ve got 2FTs 0.1m ITB

    Pickford | Heaton
    Baines | PVA | Pieters |Brunt | Amat(x)
    Eriksen | Sanchez | Pogba | Stanislas(?) | Capoue
    Zlatan | Kane | Lukaku

Currently got 4 players for GW28 plus Stan if he gets a game.
Really want Alonso & Mane in, I know Alonso has no game in 28 but he’d be in for the season.
