The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 27

While all the pre-deadline chatter centred around our confidence, or otherwise, in Sergio Aguero, it is ironic that, hours later, we’re left pondering the future prospects of two of our season’s most reliable heavy-hitters.

Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic had been earmarked as an obvious target for the Gameweek 27 armband. Bournemouth’s visit to Old Trafford appeared to present a perfect scenario for the Swede: finally, he seemed poised to deliver that 15-20 point haul that would show that he could rival any asset for big “explosive” scores.

With the Cherries defence visibly shaken by United’s early forays, it appeared that Ibrahimovic would be given that opportunity. But, instead, he was to suffer his most torrid performance of the season, returning his lowest FPL tally.

To compound matters, an errant elbow into the cheek of Tyrone Mings seems likely to be reviewed and potentially punished by the FA. That could result in a three-match ban, ruling Ibrahimovic out of Gameweeks 29 and 30.

Already missing Gameweek 28 as a result of United’s FA Cup Quarter Final with Chelsea – another match he would miss should a charge and ban arrive – Ibrahimovic has already been sold more than any other asset since the passing of today’s deadline.

While he would certainly become an obvious target once United’s double Gameweek fixtures drop in place, up until that point, he now looks set to flood out of squads, declining in ownership and price.

Certainly, should Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane impress, along with Romelu Lukaku and Diego Costa, in tomorrow’s matches, then a new front three template will likely form without Ibrahimovic.

It’s again ironic that Aguero saved legions of Fantasy Premier League managers from suffering the indignity of a doubling his -1 contribution. With the focus on skippering the City man, we had a new and obvious alternative for the captaincy.

Today’s outcome also created further doubt that, even in a double Gameweek scenario, Ibrahimovic could struggle to rival the promise of Aguero, Kane or Sanchez when it comes to dealing the Triple Captain chip.

But Sanchez produced his own shockwaves, having been ousted to the bench by Arsene Wenger for the evening trip to Liverpool.

While the Chilean impressed and produced an assist from the bench, Wenger’s almost inexplicable decision was unexpected and unwelcome.

Those who turned the back on the Aguero Triple Captain option, banking on the inevitable Sanchez double Gameweek to come, now have to consider that Giroud’s pitch time remains a factor. There will also be further speculation on the relationship between player and manager, while Arsenal’s erratic form and morale remains a concern.

No doubt targeted for an early return to our squads from Gameweek 29 onwards, tonight’s teamsheet and lacklustre first-half from the Gunners may just slow the clamour to return for Sanchez’s services.

Suddenly, with Ibrahimovic potentially out of the equation and confidence in Sanchez taking a knock, those Man City assets may just stick around longer than expected.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Looking at when Aguero was banned earlier in the season, city vs West Ham was on the Sunday and he was charged on the Tuesday.

Anyone spread some light as to how long it normally takes? 2 days or two working days? Could affect things with price rises etc.

When Aguero was banned there was lots of funny business going on, he was 'locked' and not allowed to drop in price even though about 300,000 ? people sold him, but did have bit of a supposed injury.

Will Ibra be in the same situation ? Locked and saved from a price drop as everyone sells him ?

We should have done. I am convinced the market has been manipulated this GW. City assets should have risen on Friday night.

Indeed. The fact that Aguero is dropping makes little sense as no strikers were in danger of rising last night. I understand people don't want him for next week, but it's silly to go so soon. Ah well.

Totally agree with you (Friday). Its a bit of a farce there. And to add to it people selling yesterday night while the city players where due for a rise, sold. Im pretty miffed about it cause drops are heavy and rises slowed down.

Please could someone explain how to take advantage of the dgw bench boost?

Surely it's only going to work if I have loads of dgw players on my bench and in team - but if they are all from decent teams like Arsenal and Man U how is that possible financially?

This. Lots of people last season neglected in form players who were on a SGW. If I remember right there was uproar on here when Spurs players out performed some DGW players as people were obsessed with having a full squad of DGW players. I think I kept Alli, Kane and Mahrez.

Totally depends on the fixtures that week and the impact on your team going forward on how to set up for the bigger DGWs.

Exactly, fixtures are key and this year there will be a much better choice in GW37 that may mean losing Liverpool, mids, Gylfi, Coleman, Lukaku etc. for City, Spurs, Arsenal, Soton, Utd, Chelsea

This max out at about 11 to 12 dgwers with some quality sheets I think bearing in mind any blanks that follow. There is years of history showing players from "lesser" teams hauling in dgws. Picking them is the hard bit.

Your bang on there mate. But just like always it's about being able to get the best players out within budget. Might be looking at many mid range priced players and hedging your bets rather than a few big hitters and many cheap players. So like Pedro instead of Hazard, Ozil and Iwobi over Sanchez, etc etc. That said it can work both ways if you pick the right ones. You also don't want to be lumbered with players on the bench who you would rather play on a weekly basis, so cheaper options who you don't mind benching going forward are probably a must.

Although Sanchez and Kun had massive hauls in the same DGW last year! I will likely keep Siggy and a Liv mid even with no DGW since they have good fixtures. Provided they are on decent form then of course.

Cheers Andy! 🙂 All three of them plus Lallana were amazing yesterday. Even Gini had a good game. Your double up should pay off too. I decided to go just with Agüero(TC)/Sterling and not taking another hit to ditch Phillips. I need him to start against Everton and repay the faith.

    Morning all!

Yesterday was a bit of a nightmare keeping Ibra and shipping Lukaku - any returns from Lukaku today will hurt.

In classic FPL manager style the worry sets in for the City match - 3pm lineups could be crucial - need to see that Argentinian comfort blanket starting.

I'm actually still not too worried whether the captain chip pays off or not, if it doesn't it's one of those things but it would be nice if Aguero could at least start today's game 🙂

Also took out Alli so the Spurs v Everton match could be sofa style viewing!

How are your gameweeks going? Mane the most positive from mine, Siggy and Crouch getting assists was okay too.

      3. Got to consider getting rid of Brunt soon - his fixtures are about to go bad and not like they are keeping clean sheets.

Dembele got 6 games for his little finger in Costa's face last season. Ibra should get similar for what was a pre meditated elbow.

I like the theory I have heard that goes set your team up for a BB with a WC but also use AOA around the same time when you should have 8 decent attackers. Then again AOA is meh anyway.

Only decided last minute to get Aguero in for the TC cos everyone else seemed to be. Had to take a hit which was putting me off. Ended up going for Defoe>Llorente as the enabler. That could end up being the best hit of my fpl career!

Everything that has happened up to this point is irrelevant if Kun hauls. A hit will be a drop in the ocean. Look at it this way Ibra already failed if Kane does too and you are on a decent Kun TC you are golden.

So Ibra facing potential ban. Aguero blank and then three big fixtures. And I have Lukaku.

Who do I drop for Llorente then bring Kane in afterwards?

I can straight swap Ibra to Kane price wise (11.3=11.3).

    So:

    1. Keep Aguero
    2. Sell Ibra for Llorente (then bring Kane in afterwards)

Yeah I'm thinking its the most logical move for a striker. I already have Lukaku and there really isn't any one else showing form or fixtures that play in GW28.

Could even keep Llorente for a couple of weeks then bring Kane in.

I know the rules are clear on 'raising you hands' but Ibra also deserved a yellow for simulation IMO as my 9 yr old daughter would stand up to Surman's 'push'.

That kind of thing just brings the game into disrepute.

        He should be ashamed!

p.s. Can't really blame him for the elbow considering the context. To quote Fergusson 'he could have been killed'.
