Scout Notes – Europa League – Thursday

Henrikh Mkhitaryan returns from injury to score a vital away goal as Manchester United do just enough in the first leg of their Europa League Round of 16 tie.

FC Rostov 1 Manchester United 1

An ugly pitch led to an ugly match in which the two goals were the only moments of quality, with Manchester United’s effort tilting the tie very much in their favour.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored for the visitors, sweeping home Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s skilled cut-back as Jose Mourinho’s men produced an assured first-half performance.

The second-half belonged to the Russians, however. They deserved their equaliser and pushed United hard until the final whistle of a niggly match that was high on fouls – 38 between the teams – but low on finesse.

The wind, the cold and that pitch were chiefly to blame, though at least the return of Mkhitaryan afforded Jose something to cheer about.

Because of United’s packed schedule, the Armenian has missed only one league match since injuring his hamstring against Saint Etienne last month. His recovery – and goal – came as the Red Devils embarked on another four-match run across three competitions and ten days.

After the match, though, Mourinho admitted that the former Dortmund man – who was stationed in a central support role before being replaced midway through the second period – isn’t quite up to full fitness due to that stint on the sidelines.

“We know he cannot play 90 minutes. We knew he would only play 60 minutes – it doesn’t matter [what] the result [was], we made that decision together as he is not in the best condition. We gave him freedom to play in attacking positions with Zlatan, to try to find spaces to score. He did well and managed to finish the game without injury, which is important for us.”

Mourinho made seven changes to the side that drew with Bournemouth, but more strikingly moved to a back three in which Ashley Young and Daley Blind were used as wing-backs.

That formation could very well be wheeled out again for Monday’s FA Cup quarter-final tie with Chelsea and offers Fantasy managers the chance to pick from extra defensive options should Mourinho stick with his new tactic when his side returns to league duties in Gameweek 29.

With three clean sheets from their last four starts, United defenders are certainly worth considering in the short term. Once their Gameweek 28 blank is done and dusted, they’ll face Middlesbrough and Sunderland away and West Brom and Everton at Old Trafford.

Their run-in is tough – Chelsea at home in Gameweek 33 ushers in a schedule also involving Arsenal, Spurs and Man City all away before the season ends. However, with at least two double Gameweeks to come, we will surely be calling on United assets and a certain Zlatan Ibrahimovic once again.

In the short-term, the Swede is out of the equations – he now starts a three-match ban that will keep him out of Fantasy action until Gameweek 31.

The predictable exodus is now in full flow – Ibrahimovic has been sold by more than 238,000 managers this week – and the 2.1%-owned Mkhitaryan, while not a like-for-like replacement, could be an alternative route into United’s promising upcoming fixtures, at least as a differential.

Should United, as expected, see off Rostov next Thursday at Old Trafford, their Europa League quarter-final tie would take place on April 13 and 20, either side of that huge home match with Chelsea.

Team: Romero, Jones, Smalling, Rojo, Blind (Valencia 90+2), Pogba, Herrera (Carrick 90+2), Fellaini, Mkhitaryan (Martial 67), Young, Ibrahimovic.
Subs not used: De Gea, Mata, Lingard, Rashford.

It's a bit sad that one of the most eagerly awaited fitness updates of the season was whether an off form Matty Phillips would be able to play away to Everton.

    Foster
    Baines - Coleman - Nyom

    Lukaku - Llorente

One of the Pool mids maybe and hope for a Everton WBA 0-0? 😉

I've had a look around and no one seems to be asking anything kind of similar so can someone give an opinion on this?

    Heaton
    Brunt Baines Amat* (Pieters Alonso)
    Mane Firmino Siggy Phillips* Fletcher
    Lukaku Llorente (Kane)

Already on a -4. That's 11, 10 without Amat playing of course and 9 now with Phillips out. Worth the extra -4 to change him into Coutinho for a week? Would then choose which Liv mid to change into Alli or Sanchez.

    Brunt, Coleman, Amat *
    Siggy, Mane, Coutinho (C), Markovic
    Lukaku, Carroll, Llorente
    (Pieters, Alonso, Eriksen)

One last decision to make....play Amat or take a punt on Olsson for a hit? Would also play Olsson in the next few as well so not just for 28. Considered Maguire but don't fancy Hull double up at the back.

The most popular question since Baines or Coleman. Seems the board is leaning towards Coutinho, yet everyone seems to say that ultimately it's a coin toss. My tipping points were firmonos recent scoring touch and Coutinhos injury history. I also feel that Coutinho sorta lost his mojo since his earlier injury. This could be all wrong though.

In need of some help here guys. Already used my FT with 1.4M in the bank.
For the upcoming week I have this team:

    Jakupovic
    Coleman - Amat - Brunt
    Phillips - Manè - Sigurdsson - Grosicki
    Lukaku - Llorente

Bench: Heaton, Agüero, Hazard, Alonso, Vertonghen

Amat is obviously not playing and Phillips is now ruled out so really just 8 players available. Probably gonna take a hit with Firmino/Coutinho for Hazard (who to choose and why??). Should I also take the opportunity to transfer out Amat while I have the chance? Thinking just a switch to Olsson or Mawson. As it cost -4, I'm almost guaranteed to not lose more than 2-3 points on that transfer.. What about Phillips? Maybe Lanzini in?

The plan for the next couple of weeks are:
GW29: Kane for Agüero. Maybe Alli for Grosicki/Lanzini for a hit as well..
    GW30: Costa for Lukaku.

What do you guys think? Firmino vs Coutinho? Olsson/Mawson? (worth a hit?) What to do with Phillips?

    Please help!

      I'd take Coutinho over Firmino.
I'd also move Phillips, either for King or a WH mid.
And leave Amat, not worth a hit to switch Swansea defenders around.

We have very similar teams i'm thinking the same re Amat, if you are going to play Mawson/Olsson regularly then yes makes sense due to their attacking threat. It's the absence of CS potential and number of away fixtures that is putting me off. If I didn't have Jakupovic I'd probably opt for Maguire. Need to consider whether you will need the money you would be spending on Amat upgrade though.

I'd be very hesitant about dropping Haz due to form, fixtures and DGW's. You already have Mane, maybe enough this week.

      1. Fantasyamateur
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 3 months ago

Nah, probably not playing them regularly no.. However, I see the cost of transferring out Amat now the cheapest. If not, he'll probably stick in my team until I use my WC..

Don't think Haz have been that good to be honest.. would've been a sure transfer had he blanked vs West Ham. Thinking Costa will be enough. Maybe doubling up defensively or just getting Pedro at a better price.

Liverpool with a nice run of fixture as well as being a high-scoring team. Don't think Mane is enough..

Fair enough, I am bringing Coutinho in to double up with Mane this GW but sacrificing Sane, not sure I'd ditch Haz personally but hear what you are saying. Pedro is superb value for money ! Good luck

    (Grant Pickford)
    Baines Brunt Robertson (Pieters Lenihan)
    Mane Siggy Phillips Fletcher (Sterling)
    Lukaku (Kun Kane)

Have used my FT on Lukaku to give me the above 7 (thanks, Phillips). Which should I do for a hit? Trying not to spend 12 points but f) does set me up well for next week also.

    a) Sterling > Firmino (-4)
    b) Sterling > Countinho (-4)
    c) Sterling & Phillips > Coutinho & Lanzini (-8)
    d) Sterling & Phillips > Firmino & King (-8)
    e) Sterling & Phillips > Firmino & Grosicki (-8)
    f) Lenihan, Sterling & Kun > Coleman, Firmino & Carroll (-12)

No because after this week they have Man City and Everton. Two is plenty.

    Heaton [ Pickford ]
    FM Brunt Robertson Amat* [Alonso]
Firmino Siggy Phillips [ Ericksen Sterling ]
    Luk [ Costa Aguero ]

0 FT. Phillips gotta go. I can't get Mane/Coutinho unless

    Would you :

    A. Kun , Phillips -> Llorente , Mane? Is it worth doing if about to get Llorent to Kane next GW? [ -8 , effectively a -4]
    B. Kun, Sterling, Phillips --> King, Kane , Mane ? [ -12 , effectively a - 8 ] - getting Kane early to enable getting Mane.
    C. Kun, Sterling, Phillips --> King, Llorente, Mane ? [-12 but effectively a -6 ] and next week Costa/Llorente to Kane for free.
    D. Phillips to King only and play with 7 players.

    Foster
    Coleman - Baines - Brunt
    Mane - Firmino - Siggy - Phillips
    Lukaku - Llorente - Carroll

    Grant Eriksen Pieters Yoshida

    -4 taken, 6.5 ITB

Thinking Phillips to T. Carroll to free up funds moving forward (no WC) and get the structure of my team in order. The temptation to get in Coutinho is there but would force me to reshape for another hit to get in Kane next gw.

Same boat, torn between King and T.Carroll for Phillips. Head says Carroll. Would get rid of future benching headaches which we'll both be left with.

It feels weird doing it with so much money ITB and Cout ready to explode but long term I think it is the right decision

Play Heaton or Foster (have McAuley)?

Probably captain Lukaku although might also have a LIV mid soon.

Thinking Heaton for save points and not having double WBA def.....

Both are likely to conceded. I'm playing Heaton.

This week's mess will make the next two weeks a mess as well.

    Thanks Phillips. 😐

Lads. Look at how Pool are playing inconsistently and some facts :

Firmino, 4 goals, 2 assists in 16 games

    Coutinho. 1 in 8.

Not even questionable form unfortunately but nearly no form.

I have Mane for a few weeks so won't sell him this week .

Burnley beat Pool at home and will park the bus which they are damn good at.

There's as much to gained for one GW in Brady, Carroll, King to bench after that GW and free funds for DGWs.

Taken a -8 for ibra stanis and Phillips to llorente king and coutinho.

So I go to -12 and do sterling to siggy?

That would give me a full 11 players thus week.

    Or stick with playing 10

    Thanks

        I'm nervous mate!

        Unchartered territory!

Got a load of rivals ganging up behind me...albeit 50 -60 points behind...

Philips was my Sanchez placeholder so now now whoever I bring in (for a hit), I'll be selling almost immediately.

Makes me wonder if the hit is worth it

None thought I thought about it. Have 10 already but not taking a hit to bring in another defender so it's a 2-5-2 for me with Foster in goals.
